President Abraham Lincoln was watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC. But some Southern sympathisers still thought the Confederacy could be restored. Among them was the actor John Wilkes Booth. He entered the theatre, made his way to Lincoln's box and carried out the first assassination of a US president. Send us a textMinnesota State House Representative Rick Hansen was first elected to represent South St. Paul in the Minnesota State House in 2004 along with his colleague Melissa Hortman who represented northern Minneapolis and went on to serve as Speaker of the Minnesota House for 6 years. On June 14, 2025, Melissa and her husband Mark were assassinated when they opened their front door to a man impersonating a police officer. The man had come from Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman's home where he had shot Senator Hoffman and his wife multiple times; their daughter called 911 and saved her parents. Last week we ended our study time looking at a great king of Judah, Hezekiah. Today we start with one of the worst kings of Judah, Manasseh, Hezekiah's son. Manasseh reigned from 697-642 B.C. His story is found in 2 Kings 21:1-18 and 2 Chronicles 33:1-20. Manasseh reigned 55 years. He reigned longer than any other king and did more damage than any other king.  He did evil in God's eyes. It is a disgusting and tragic story.  He destroys everything good his father had done. King Manasseh     ⁃    Apostasy and Idolatry - 2 Chronicles 33:33     ⁃    Sacrificed his children  - 2 Chronicles 33:6     ⁃    Innocent blood shed including the blood of prophets -  2 Kings 21:16. (Hebrews 11:37 - ancient Jewish tradition that says it was during Manasseh's reign that Isaiah was sawn in half by Manasseh)     ⁃    Captivity in Babylon - Manasseh was taken prisoner by Assyria and taken to Babylon  - 2 Chronicles 33:11     ⁃    Repentance and return to Judah- while in prison Manasseh had a change of heart, humbling himself greatly before God and praying. The Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so God brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom, proving to Manasseh that He is the true God - 2 Chronicles 33:12-13 What we learn: God is a gracious God and hears the cries of those who humble themselves before Him.  He responds to a repentant heart.  In the final years of his life, Manasseh worked to redo things but to no avail as his son, King Amon takes the throne. Amon reigned from 642-640 B.C. and his story is found in 2 Kings 21:19-26 and 2 Chronicles 33:21-25. Amon did evil in the eyes of the Lord. King Amon     ⁃    Return to idolatry - 2 Chronicles 33:22-23     ⁃    Conspiracy and Assassination - 2 Chronicles 33:24-25 - Josiah, Amon's son was then made king. King Josiah Josiah is just a boy when he begins his 31 year reign and in Pastor's opinion, the greatest king of Judah. Josiah reigned from 640-609 B.C. His story is found in 2 Kings 22:1-23:30 and 2 Chronicles 34-35. During his reign there were many prophets: Jeremiah, Zephaniah, Nahum, Habakkuk and Huldah.  God is working to bring the nation back to Himself. During King Josiah's reign, Judah experienced three of its happiest decades: peace, prosperity and revival.  King Josiah     ⁃    Young King seeks the God of David - he followed in the ways of David - 2 Kings 22:1-2 and 2 Chronicles 34:3      ⁃    Spiritual cleansing of Jerusalem - 2 Chronicles 34:4-5     ⁃    Book of the Law of God written by Moses (possibly the original Torah) is discovered  - 2 Chronicles 34:8, 2 Chronicles 34:14, 2 Chronicles 34:19, 2 Chronicles 34:22.  In 2 Chronicles 34:27 we read of Huldah who tells the king that God says that judgment is coming, but because he (Josiah) had humbled himself before God, wept and torn his robes, that Josiah will not live to see the destruction. Historian and journalist Vijay Prashad talks with Steve about why Antonio Gramsci still matters. Listeners to this podcast know that we have a pretty good grasp of the monetary system. But we're constantly working to expand our understanding of the systemic underpinnings of real power. How else will we be able to seize it? For help, we turn to Gramsci. According to Vijay, Gramsci was doing class forensics. His core puzzle was brutal and practical: why did big chunks of Italy's working-class bail on their own unions and parties and drift into fascism? That's the real origin story of “cultural hegemony,” “common sense,” and the whole Gramscian toolbox: figuring out how consent gets manufactured and how counterrevolution recruits. Vijay takes us through Gramsci's political development and his imprisonment under Mussolini, where he wrote his seminal Prison Notebooks. Then they get into Gramsci's key concepts: hegemony (borrowed from Lenin and, per Vijay, more than a “culture theory”), the necessity of a Leninist-type party as the modern Prince, and the need to build alliances to create working-class leadership over society. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 2,000 Christians in India protested persecution Around 2,000 Christians gathered in India's capital of New Delhi last month to protest persecution. Speakers at the event noted that attacks on Christians in the country increased 500% between 2014 and 2024. However, police investigated less than 20% of the cases.  One organizer said, “This is not a political movement, but a constitutional dialogue among Indian citizens from the Christian faith, exercising their democratic rights. The systematic and egregious violence and hostility, coupled with police inaction and lack of access to justice, requires solutions.” India is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most difficult countries to be a Christian.  Australia banned social media accounts for kids Australia became the first country in the world to ban social media accounts for children this week. The government now requires social media companies to deactivate the accounts of children under 16 in the country or face serious fines. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released a message, calling on young people to invest in real-world activities and relationships. Listen.  ALBANESE: “Make the most of the school holidays coming up, rather than spending it scrolling on your phone. Start a new sport, learn a new instrument, or read that book that has been sitting there on your shelf for some time. And importantly, spend quality time with your friends and your family, face to face.” Supreme Court allows Texas county to ban objectionable books In America, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed a Texas county to keep its ban on objectionable books in public libraries. The issue began in 2021 when Llano County in Central Texas removed 17 books from libraries at the request of local residents. The disputed titles included multiple books for young adults with themes on sexually perverted lifestyles. Sadly, other residents favored access to such indecency. The Supreme Court's ruling on Monday leaves in place a ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. That ruling noted, “From the moment they emerged in the mid-19th century, public libraries have shaped their collections to present what they held to be worthwhile literature. … Public libraries used to exclude most novels, which were thought bad for morals.” Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” 15th county bans abortion Motley County, Texas became the 15th county in the nation to ban abortion. On Monday, the county's Commissioners Court unanimously adopted a Sanctuary County for the Unborn ordinance. Motley County is the 13th county in Texas to pass such an ordinance. It is also the 22nd political subdivision in the U.S. to pass such a measure this year. Wikipedia's #1 2025 article: Charlie Kirk's assassination Wikipedia announced its most-read articles of 2025. The online encyclopedia reported that the most popular article on English Wikipedia this year covered Charlie Kirk. The Christian activist was assassinated on September 10th of this year while speaking at an event for his organization, Turning Point USA, at Utah Valley University.  30% of U.S. adults took political/spiritual action in wake of Charlie Kirk's death The Barna Group released a new survey last week on the spiritual impact of Charlie Kirk's death.  The study found that nearly 30% of U.S. adults took action since Kirk's death. While some said they took political action, most said they took spiritual action.
