Empress Myeongseong (Queen Min), born Min Ja-yeong in 1851, was the child bride of the young King Gojong of Korea. This was during the Joseon isolationist era, overseen by her father-in-law, the conservative regent Heungseon Daewongun. As foreign powers pressured the "Hermit Kingdom," a 1870s coup to sideline the regent lead to an era of modernization. Japan's 1895 victory in the First Sino-Japanese War ended Chinese influence, and Queen Min's secret appeals to Russia for aid provoked Tokyo. On October 8, 1895, Japanese Minister Miura Gorō orchestrated her assassination, unleashing a process that would lead to Japan annexing Korea in 1910. Korean nationalist lore casts Queen Min as a heroic modernizer and defender against imperialism. But many scholars highlight the virtual inevitability of the peninsula's subordination to one foreign power or another, her factionalism, and risky foreign intrigues. Her brutal murder nevertheless forged an enduring legend of resistance. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related books and reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag. The disciples went boldly to the temple because they loved their people and were compelled to proclaim the reign of King Jesus where the lost were. Though filled with fear, awe, and opposition, they obeyed God's command, showing that obedience, not emotion, drives gospel mission. Their courage flowed from real encounters with the risen Christ. So, because Jesus is exalted as Prince and Savior, we too are called to live as His witnesses and speak of Him no matter the cost.

An industry expert says it's not practical to regulate blind cords. A coroner's released a report on the death of three-year-old Tilly Cambie in 2023, after a cord tangled around her neck. She's one of several children to die that way since 2009. They recommend mandatory blind standards - which the Government's ruled out. I'm a wife of 49 years, mother of two adult children, andGrammy to two wonderful girls. I've worked for my company for 45 years and look to retire in the next 2 years. I love to walk, hike, travel, read and be as active and healthy as possible. I never had to worry about my weight until my early30's. I was the skinny kid. My dad always told me I had toothpick legs. I could eat anything and everything and never gain weight. When I got married at 22, I weighed 122 lbs., the highest I'd ever been. When I got pregnant with my daughter eight years later, I weighed 127 lbs. I gained 22 lbs during my pregnancy and lost it quickly. As I moved into my 30s, weight suddenly became an issue, and within about 5 years, I'd gotten up to 160 lbs. I joined a Weight Watchers at-work group and got down to 125 lbs., but looked gaunt and unhealthy. But, as is often the case, WW proved unsustainable. And I got back up to where I was when I originally joined WW. I then tried so many other "diets" and landed at around 140 lbs. In 2021, I had a total knee replacement and gained 15 lbs. due to inactivity and comforteating. I tried WW again, lost 5 lbs. and then the scale wouldn't budge any further. My daughter had suggested IF, but the word "fasting" was frightening to me. Finally, I was so desperate that I said I'd give it a try. January 26, 2022, was the day I started IF, and I will never live my life any differently. I lost the other 10 lbs. Plus another 15 and have settled into an IF lifestyle.Graeme's Links to connect with me directly. This week on Outcast World, Graeme and Topher accidentally kick a hornet's nest on TikTok and Instagram and get absolutely swarmed. Bots, right-wing bedwetters, and people arguing with total confidence that red is actually blue. A proper deluge. Where do they all come from, and why do they all sound the same? There is one bright spot: Green Party deputy leader Zack Polanski shares the post on TikTok, which helps restore some faith in humanity. But like everyone else, we're still drawn to the worst comments — so we read them. All of them. Then we start replying. What follows is a scorched-earth comments policy. Bots get called out. Bad arguments get dismantled. Unhinged profiles get gently (and sometimes not so gently) mocked. We end up trolling the trolls so efficiently it becomes a full-time job — and, weirdly, a great day out.Along the way we get into why Topher will always hire and promote sex workers, and why on earth a certain Mr Yaxley-Lennon publicly complained about being served gay Grindr ads by the algorithm… then chose to post about it. The highlights are here. The comments are unhinged. And yes — we replied to pretty much all of them.---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. This helps us become easier to discover. Legendary Queer photographer and the man behind the Attitude uncut Kink edition front page, Charles Moriarty joins Graeme Smith to talk about Brock — his new photobook following actor and filmmaker Brock across four unstable years, from early ambition to the completion of Brock's debut film Test. What started as a DM in 2017 became a stop-start collaboration shaped by distance, lockdown and uncertainty. Charles breaks down how Brock holds multiple threads at once, Brock as subject, Brock as filmmaker, the photographer's role in shaping narrative, and the thin line between lived reality and performance. Since its release, the book has been quickly picked up by queer press in the UK and US.The conversation then moves into politics, and the tone hardens. Charles is clear about his anger at the current Labour leadership, arguing that its stance on trans rights and immigration has consequences that extend far beyond messaging. He and Graeme talk about how far-right ideas are normalised through misinformation, how fear is monetised online, and why many queer people no longer feel protected by mainstream politics. ---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. YOUR BI WEEKLY DOSE OF QUEER POLITICS, SEX AND CULTUREOn today's episode, Graeme and Topher are joined at the start by Nick Charles — Trinidad-born Loud Brown Gays podcaster, music producer, and part of the original Outcast team — for an episode that opens on an awkward realisation: Graeme's just seen a video on X of someone being bummed, and slowly works out the arse belongs to the man now sitting next to him. From there, the conversation moves into Heated Rivalry — why it's landing with gay men right now, and what it gets right about desire, masculinity and intimacy without sanding things down.Politics follows. Nick talks about growing up in Trinidad, living next door to Venezuela, and having Venezuelan family, and why Trump's renewed interest in the Caribbean feels unsettling from that position. Watching the scale and cruelty of ICE deportations in the US sharpens the concern. The episode closes back in the UK, asking whether Reform are serious about their promises — and what a real deportation drive would actually mean.P;---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. In 2009, Graeme went to LA to work and make TV industry contacts but was exposed to a darker and more underground world than he could ever have imagined. The intersection of tinseltown, people seeking fame and the allure of meth and sex has been the ruin of countless promising careers and Graeme tells Topher about how the career highlight of working filming TV shows in LA, led to the discovery of a dark and destructive world just beneath the surface.---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. My name is Corey Martin. I'm 24 years old and based on the Gold Coast, Australia. I'm fortunate to have an incredibly supportive family and partner who have backed me every step of the way. I'm currently on a significant weight-loss and health journey and am proud to say I'm down 60kg so far, with strong motivation to keep going. This journey began after listening to one of The Fasting Highway episodes in September 2024, which my aunt recommended during a very challenging period in my life. At the time, I was struggling deeply with my health and well-being and had recently been turned down for a job due to my weight (172kg). This came after a particularly low point, where a back injury left me unable to work or do much of anything for around six months. Something truly clicked after hearing your episode — a switch I had tried to flip before, but never successfully followed through on. This time was different. In October 2024, I began intermittent fasting alongside awhole-food diet. The results were remarkable, and it motivated me to push further. I started with walking and gradually introduced weight training and cardio, with guidance and support from my older brother, Haydn. I held myself strictly accountable and remained disciplined with my nutrition. During this time, I also undertook several major internationaltrips. In February, I spent three weeks in Japan with my partner, Ella, and my younger brother, Blake. In May, Ella and I embarked on a 33-day cruise from Sydney to Vancouver, with many incredible stops along the way. We then spent time in Whistler before travelling to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. While international travel can often disrupt progress, I was determined to stay consistent — and I'm proud to say I did. Today, I'm at 112kg and genuinely couldn't be happier. My life has changed in countless positive ways.Graeme's Links to connect with me directly. From traditional nomadic dwellings to state-of-the-art airports, through monumental temples and Baroque palaces to high-rise apartments and high-fashion boutiques, The Story of the Interior: How We Have Shaped Rooms and How They Shape Us (Thames & Hudson, 2025) by Professor Graeme Brooker explores an exciting array of inside spaces from around the world to reveal how the fundamental elements of a room have evolved and endured. Organized in three parts – The Room, The Private Interior and The Public Interior – the book presents a fascinating account of how the interior has been conceived and thought of from antiquity to the present day. By calling attention to the most basic elements of inside space – walls, doors, windows, furniture, ambience to name a few – this engaging exploration delves into how private and public interiors actively shape the way we live, work, learn and play. The book spans a wide range of iconic and offbeat examples drawn from the world of architecture, urbanism and furniture design, as well as art installations and imagined spaces. Brooker deftly guides us through interiors as diverse as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Olafur Eliasson's The Weather Project, the Prada store in Marfa, Texas, and Sou Fujimoto's NA House, as well as the rock-cut Buddhist temples of India, medieval European castles and ancient Egyptian tombs, to unveil the drastically different and surprisingly similar spaces that surround us. The result is a fascinating tour of global interiors, tracing the genesis and evolution of these places and how they help us understand human presence and behaviour. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In 2013, to mark International Consumers Day, China’s state-run TV network labelled Apple a ‘bad company’. More than a decade later, despite claiming to rely on multinationals from 50 different countries, Apple still has nearly 100% of its supply chain in China. In this episode, we look at how Apple became so dependent on China, what it did to rehabilitate its image in the eyes of the Chinese government, and how it has influenced China’s aspiring global tech giants. Graeme is joined by Jianggan Li, the founder and CEO of Singapore-based Momentum Works, and the co-author of Seeing the Unseen: Behind Chinese Tech Giants’ Global Venturing and Patrick McGee, Financial Times journalist and the author of Apple in China: The Capture of the World’s Greatest Company. In this episode, we learn how to---as Graeme would say---RIP THE SYSTEM. Well, at least until an aunt bails us out.
