The Church of England just met to decide the future of LGBTQ+ people in the Church — again. Still no equal marriage. Still no full acceptance. Still a fight. This week, Graeme speaks to Phillip Baldwin — a gay man, HIV-positive, and one of the few openly queer members of the Church's General Synod. From inside the Church's governing body, Phillip takes us behind the scenes of a system still struggling to recognise LGBTQ+ lives with dignity. It's a raw conversation about faith, identity, and what it means to stay in the room when the institution you serve refuses to fully welcome you.---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. Paul and his friends experience the pain of leaving a beloved church family, showing that deep love often comes with deep cost. Along the way, believers, through the Spirit, warn Paul of the suffering ahead, but he courageously stays the course. His response shows that true obedience doesn't avoid hardship but embraces God's will, whatever the cost. These verses invite us to live with the same courage: to love deeply, listen carefully, and follow Jesus boldly.

Continuing our series on belief in China, we look at the revival of Buddhism, which is being embraced by citizens and the Chinese state. While temple visits increase, the state is funding temples and martial arts academies from Nepal to Tanzania. As Xi Jinping extols Buddhism with Chinese characteristics, the Chinese state is leveraging Buddhism diplomacy to its advantage. Karen and Irma chat about foreign rights deals, and Irma shares some shocking stats. Then Irma chats to Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist about how a conversation between them on their first wedding anniversary was pivotal in Anne's career, the low of splitting with Graeme's publisher after the three Rosie Project books, how they manage the process of planning and writing books together, why they think their book tour to 400 bookshops made no difference to sales, what does impact sales and tips for how to secure publicity that works, the ups and downs of The Rosie Project movie, and the most meaningful reader feedback.About Graeme & AnneGraeme Simsion and Anne Buist are partners in both life and writing. Together they have written four books, the latest being The Oasis, which is the second Menzies Mental Health novel. And separately they both have established individual careers.Graeme is a screenwriter, playwright, and former IT consultant, and his debut novel, The Rosie Project, was an international bestseller. He followed it up with two sequels, and the standalone The Best of Adam Sharp, a collection of short stories, two data modelling books and the writing guide, The Novel Project.Anne has published five psychological thrillers – four in the Natalie King series, and the standalone The Long Shadow. She also has over 40 years of clinical and research experience in perinatal psychiatry.
In this lively and thought-provoking Summer Flashback episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens is joined by AJ and Graeme - hosts of the Classical Stuff You Should Know podcast - for a conversation that's anything but dry. With humor and deep insight, they explore the enduring value of the Great Books and why these ancient texts still matter in today's fast-paced, tech-saturated world. What do old works like Plato's Republic, Lewis's Abolition of Man, and the Epic of Gilgamesh have to do with raising wise, virtuous kids in 2025? More than you think. AJ and Graeme argue that these works don't just fill students with facts - they shape souls, build moral reasoning, and connect readers with timeless questions of virtue, mortality, and purpose.Along the way, you'll hear about:The danger of reducing education to "skills" aloneHow reading trains sentiments and cultivates characterWhy kids actually love Plato (yes, really!)And what a classical education offers that modern schooling can'tWhether you're a parent wondering why your school insists on Dante and Homer, or an educator seeking fresh ways to inspire students, this conversation is a must-listen.
Today marks another big step in arguably one of the most important ongoing projects in the analogue photography world, Harman Technologies work to develop a high quality new colour film. The launch of Phoenix 2 is, whilst by no means the end of this journey still an exciting look at the incredible process they are making, and a fun and highly useable film itself. Joining Rachel and Graeme to talk all about it, what exactly it is (and isn't), the improvements and changes over the original Phoenix film and the quirks it still has is the fabulous Michelle Parr from Harman/Ilford. We also discuss how this launch affects availability of the original Phoenix (and Red), what the next steps will be and more. https://www.harmanphoto.co.uk/harman-phoenix-ii-35mm Follow their colour film journey @harmanphoto and share your photos with #phoenixfilm2 #harmanphoenix2
In May 1991 At Last The Go On Show was broadcast on BBC Radio 2, designed to celebrate the Goon Show's 40th anniversary. It was a stunning documentary that still sounds fresh and relevant today and two of the three men behind it - Dirk Maggs and Ted Kendall - joined Tyler and Graeme Lindsay Foot to discuss how it all came about and the challenges they faced. Ted (who it turns out wanted to be a racing driving before getting into audio engineering) talks about bringing together the clips and sequences which proliferate throughout and the techniques employed to improve their quality. Dirk recalls interviewing Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine and the marathon session putting everything together. Graeme looks back at it from the fan's perspective and recalls GSPS get-togethers from years gone by. They also talk about the series of restored shows that aired the following year and the necessary cuts needed in a wide-ranging and thoroughly enjoyable conversation.
In 2004, Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko claimed he was poisoned by pro-Russian rivals, an allegation that drew global attention due to his disfigured face and a diagnosis of dioxin poisoning. The incident fueled the pro-Western “Orange Revolution,” which overturned an initial election result and led to Yushchenko's eventual victory. However, his presidency was marred by economic decline, corruption, and political infighting. By 2010, he had lost public support and finished with just 5% of the vote. Later investigations cast doubt on the poisoning, with some suggesting it may have been a politically motivated fabrication. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related books and reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag. Discussions are taking place over the future of the Census, and one expert is warning there's a factor the Government hasn't considered. Last month, Minister Shane Reti announced the five yearly data collection will be scrapped - instead, he plans to use administrative data from Government agencies and an annual survey. Wellington barrister Graeme Edgeler says the Data and Statistics Act requires a a periodic Census. "There are a lot of other laws which deal with the Census as well - and one of the really important ones is the Electoral Act and one of the reasons why we count people is so we can divide them up into 70 or so electorates around the country, and they've all got to have the same number of people in them."

As the Glastonbury Festival heatwave rolls on, the political outrage is just warming up. Graeme and Nick Charles unpack Kneecap's headline-grabbing set and the pearl-clutching reaction from MPs and a media desperate to censor a culture they don't understand. Did The 1975 let us down with the announcement mid set they didn't want to do politics.. to only then go and sing a load of inherently political songs. There's also Bob Vylan and the stage chants that got police attention. Are we all compelled to comment on the issues tearing the world apart, or is it ok to sit things out like The 1975 tried do?Then it's onto porn in crisis: with gay adult performer Austin Wolf facing child porn and sex offence charges, we ask why mainstream porn is getting darker, more extreme, and frankly bizarre. And as if on cue, a Tory peer wants to appoint a Minister for Porn. Before overlanding was a hashtag, it was a mindset—and Graeme Jackson was one of the people who helped define it in the U.S. In this episode, we sit down with Graeme to trace the origins of overlanding in North America, from the founding days of Overland Journal to the first Overland Expo. With decades of international experience, including a full traverse of Africa in the early 2000s, Graeme brings a unique blend of practical insight and historical context. This conversation is a window into where we've come from—and what we might need to remember as the industry moves forward.
As rooftop solar booms and the grid grows more complex, one question is gaining urgency: how do we store energy locally, efficiently, and in a way that benefits everyone? Community batteries are emerging as one solution small-scale, shared storage systems designed to maximise solar self-consumption, reduce network strain, and deliver value back to neighbourhoods. In this episode of Transmission, Wendel is joined by Graeme Martin - Founder of Village Power to take a closer look at the real-world deployment of community batteries in Australia. From funding and grid integration to ownership models and consumer trust, this conversation explores what it takes to build energy infrastructure at street level and why that might be the key to a more resilient, inclusive electricity system. In this episode, you'll learn:What community batteries actually do and how they fit between household solar and grid-scale storage. The biggest roadblocks to rollout, from regulatory complexity to grid connection delays. Why customer experience and transparency matter, and how trust shapes participation. The economics of local storage, including how these systems are funded and who benefits. How community-led models can scale, and what Australia's experience means for global grids.About our guestGraeme Martin is Founder and Director of Village Power, a volunteer-led community energy group based in Melbourne. With over 30 years in environmental science and geospatial consulting, Graeme has led the group's multi-year campaign to install a community battery in Alphington/Fairfield. A law expert says it's important for the Māori Development Minister to look at contracts - to figure out where Whānau Ora's money is coming from. Tama Potaka is seeking a review of a recent Whānau Ora ad campaign encouraging Māori to sign up to the Māori electoral roll. He says it would be inappropriate for public funding to be used for electioneering. Law expert Graeme Edgeler told Mike Hosking the law isn't complicated about this, so long as the money is coming from the right place. He says this is Whānau Ora's commissioning agency which is private, and can spend money how they like, as long as it is their money. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As a child, chef Graeme Stockdale was embarrassed by the smell of sauerkraut and pickles that would trail him from his Polish and German grandparents' home. A transformative encounter with a barbecued duck in Singapore changed his life, though nothing would prepare him for two monumental floods in his adopted region of Lismore, NSW.Graeme was only a boy when he was introduced to the power and ferocity of fire. As a nine-year-old living in Albany, Western Australia he lit a fire out of curiosity on a neighbour's property. It was the look on his mother's face that turned his experience from awesome into terrifying.Graham grew up with the flavours of his grandparents' German and Polish ancestry, raised by a single mum, and experienced social isolation brought on by the judgement of kids at school. After the barbecued duck experience, his whole world became focused on food, and he eventually opened his own restaurant in Lismore, NSW.Graeme survived two major floods, and in the aftermath, cooked on his barbecue non-stop for weeks, outside his ruined restaurant, feeding his community with help from volunteers.Further informationRead more about Graeme's restaurant in Lismore, The Stockpot Kitchen.Graeme's cookbook, Red Hot & Smokin'! was published by New Holland Publishers in 2019.Conversations' Executive Producer is Nicola Harrison.
