According to Meg-John Barker at rewriting the rules, "My own way of dealing with meaninglessness in life, has also been to embrace it as an inevitable part of life which will happen with some regularity. There will be times – perhaps quite frequently – when we feel that our projects are pointless in the grand scheme of things, or when the world feels an overwhelming and cold place to live in, or when disconnections and conflicts with others feel unbearable and we feel utterly broken by life. If we see such times as evidence that we are ‘getting it wrong' and try desperately to find some meaning quickly, we are – perhaps – likely to spiral even further into hopelessness. When we have such moments, it can be useful to focus on the very basic mundane activities of life (walking the dog, making our breakfast, having a shower), getting on with it until it has passed. And sometimes we just have to be with the horror of the meaninglessness while it is there without trying to change it, and without being able to do anything whilst it is happening."The Sources: A blog post breakdown of "The Case for Tragic Optimism" https://www.rewriting-the-rules.com/self/tragic-optimism/ Lit Charts for "The Case for Tragic Optimism": https://www.litcharts.com/lit/man-s-search-for-meaning/postscript-1984-the-case-for-tragic-optimismVictor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" and "The Case for Tragic Optimism" https://antilogicalism.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mans-search-for-meaning.pdfResources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT Julie (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Because humanity has been here a while, and books exist where people write down what they do to deal with hard shit, there are plenty of first hand accounts of people not just surviving but thriving after dealing with the impossible. Survival is context based and has no rules or generalizations that would be fair, so I'll skip that - but beyond surviving, if you want to feel like you're actually filling that deep, dark void that has been strategically implanted into all of us when we were born into a society that puts profits over people, you have to sometimes face or shoulder shit that shouldn't be your responsibility to face or shoulder. So how do we do it? Victor Frankl makes a case for tragic optimism. Today we discuss what that means. Send us a textThe crew gathers with a couple of noticeable absences, leading to an unexpectedly deep conversation about how success changes friendships. As they put it, there's a clear distinction between "Ford Steve" and "Tesla Steve" – a metaphor for how material success can transform not just circumstances, but relationships too. What begins as light banter evolves into a fascinating nostalgia trip through childhood memories that many listeners will find surprisingly relatable. From battling household pests during awkward teenage romantic encounters to stealing watermelons and working summer jobs picking peas, the raw authenticity of these shared experiences creates moments of genuine connection amid the laughter. The episode hits its stride when the crew debates which artists they could listen to for an entire five-hour road trip, sparking passionate defenses of old-school hip-hop legends like LL Cool J, OutKast, and Grandmaster Flash. These musical discussions unlock doors to formative memories from the 80s and 90s, with each host connecting specific songs to pivotal moments in their development.Cultural observations provide some of the most thought-provoking moments, like questioning why certain seating arrangements in cars seem to differ across communities. Even a hypothetical question about what they'd do with Superman's powers reveals surprisingly honest answers that break from conventional superhero narratives. What makes this episode special is how seamlessly it blends laugh-out-loud moments with unexpected vulnerability. Whether you relate to their experiences or are getting a window into different perspectives, you'll feel like you're sitting around with old friends sharing stories that range from hilariously inappropriate to surprisingly profound. Thanks for listening to the Nobody's Talking Podcast. Alastair Moyer teaches through the story of Jephthah as found in Judges 10-12. Here we find a man who was disregarded and hurt as a youth. Later in life he is called by God's people to lead them to victory over their oppressors, yet the un-dealt-with hurt from his youth, as well as his lack of true knowledge of and intimacy with the God of the Bible, leads him to hurt his family and God's people in some horrific ways. We see a man who tried to bargain with his version of God for a limited, earthly victory instead of submitting himself to the grace, mercy, and wisdom of the true God of the Bible.

These two intense broadcasts weave together urgent national and local crises. The first transcript exposes ongoing Iranian plots to assassinate Donald Trump, failures within the Secret Service after multiple attacks, and Senate GOP efforts to slash funding for agencies like USAID over alleged bioweapons shipments to China. The second transcript tells the heartbreaking story of 15-year-old Chastity Nelson, killed by a habitual drunk driver whose prior DUIs were mishandled by the courts. Overflowing vigils honored her memory while her devastated community demanded reform. Together, these segments highlight the consequences of institutional negligence and the threats facing American leaders and families alike

What was supposed to be a celebratory holiday weekend turned tragic in Texas with some of the most horrific flash flooding we've ever seen. The stories of loss are just heartbreaking and the stories of heroism are remarkable. The Big, Beautiful Bill is in full effect and there are plenty of reasons to cheer. But the biggest winner may be ICE which gets an incredible boost of support in this legislation. Obama threw a wet blanket on Independence Day with a dark, dire, cynical post about our great holiday. We have an NFL pre season game three weeks from Thursday... let's go. And as the Chiefs get ready to open camp in a few days, it's clear quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have to play his way into shape after vacation photos of him shirtless hit the tabloids. The Royals have won 3 of their last 4 but lost another game toward the wildcard. And we'll tell you who made the All Star team.

Liz Plank joins Joanna Coles for a scorching postmortem on the Venice wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez—a $50 million display of “confetti capitalism” that collided head-on with a collapsing middle class. Plank, whose viral Substack column captured the online fury, recounts watching the foam-drenched bacchanal while her paper straw dissolved in her mouth and seniors were zip-tied at the Capitol protesting Medicaid cuts. She argues the grotesque contrast isn't just offensive—it's politically clarifying. As celebrities scrambled for camera time and Vogue's fawning coverage backfired, Plank points to a growing revolt: from Zohran's shock primary win in New York to Hungary's defiant pride march. She connects the dots from Bezos's billionaire cosplay to the Democratic Party's disconnect with working people—and calls for all to use their voice, both online and off, to advocate for real political change.
