Just after midnight on July 6, 1932, twenty-year-old Zachary Smith Reynolds, a renowned aviator and an heir to the R.J. Reynolds tobacco fortune, was shot in the family's summer home in what is now Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While some believed the moody young man had committed suicide, evidence suggested someone else had pulled the trigger, and eventually Reynolds' wife, Broadway actress Libby Holman, and his best friend, A.B. Walker, would be indicted for murder. I'm joined by Phil Archer, the Betsy Main Babcock Deputy Director at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. He helped create Reynolda's popular exhibition, called "Smith & Libby: Two Rings, Seven Months, One Bullet", which can now be experienced in a condensed form on the very porch where Smith died. What a privilege to get some time to talk high school swimming with Phil. He and his staff at the MSHSL do a lot more than stamps hands and give out medals at the state meet and we get into that. Also, hear about Phil's background, including some time in the NFL, what he sees in our sport and a little of his vision for the upcoming seasons. We will definitely have Phil on again in the future

Phil Archer joined GS1 - the standards body behind the barcode - in July 2017 to bring an in-depth knowledge of the Web to the world of supply chains for retail, healthcare and more. His role at GS1 is an application of work done previously at W3C, making product data more accessible and maximising its potential for brand owners, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. As well as work at GS1 and W3C, his career has encompassed online safety, broadcasting, teaching, linked data publishing, copy writing, and, perhaps incongruously, countryside conservation.

Ep. 22 A fight breaks out amidst the exploding Molotov cocktails at Elmuc's Friendly Oozes. Dirk and Adam are worried they'll have to handle it all, but the 3-foot-tall kobold security guard is surprisingly more than competent. The kobold gang was not expecting a fight and tries to run away like little bitches. However, Dirk and Adam are quick to act.   Dirk pulls out a bow and uses a new arrow with questionable, but also game changing, properties. Adam ends up behind the wheel of one of their machines, we all know that Adam is book smart, but he didn't exactly have time to read the manual on this one… Will Adam correct course in time to avoid a crash? Lucy is picking up high level BBC intelligence from secret drops in Epping Forest whilst she is recording Walky Talky. These drops includes this week’s DumTeeDum from Doha. Lucy then gets the order of the podcast wrong (twice) this week and Roifield leaves her apparent confusion in the final version. 20 year listener comedian Chris Neill then keeps Lucy in painful stitches (she had just been to pilates) for some 20 minutes as they discuss the ins and outs of our favourite programme. Chris first remembers listening to the death of John Archer. If he joined the cast Chris would like to live with the Grundys at Grange Farm and have a go on Tom should the opportunity arise. For the record Sean’s partner at the Cat and Fiddle was called Peter. Lucy then did the Bartleby not Joe joke! She then explains the Archer family tree to Chris as they are all related really, but they get sidelined over Peggy. I think I should confirm that Jack and Phil Archer were brothers, which is how they are all related. Anthea... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Patricia Greene. For nearly sixty years she has played the role of Jill in Radio 4's The Archers which celebrates its 65th anniversary on January 1st 2016. Over the decades the storylines have followed her character through one marriage, four children and since 2010, widowhood. Born in Derby in 1931, Paddy's love of acting began early on inspired by her father who was a keen amateur actor. As an only and independent child she was surrounded by the adult world and would often eavesdrop as she hid under the kitchen table. Her parents loved entertainment and would take her to the cinema every week to see Hollywood romances or comedies. After attending a grammar school she went to the Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1951. She wanted to be a classical actress, but then a phone call from the Archers production office changed her career path and she joined the cast initially on a six week contract in 1957. Her character Jill went onto marry the farmer Phil Archer, and is still there with a recent storyline seeing her return to Brookfield, the family farm. Patricia has been married twice and was widowed in 1986. She was awarded an MBE in 2007. Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
