Alexander was a prodigy in all things military and administrative, as unaccountably great in his own field as Mozart was in music or Michelangelo in art. By age 32, he had conquered the mightiest empire ever known and extended the boundaries of his kingdom to the edges of the known world. Against men, beasts, and entire armies, Alexander never lost a battle. But in the prime of his life and the apex of his power, he became ill and soon died. What, exactly, conquered the greatest conqueror the world had ever known? Infectious disease? Battle wounds? Prodigious drinking? Neurological or hereditary illnesses, or murder most foul and insidious? On this episode we speak with Professor Philip Freeman, author of the acclaimed biographgy of Alexander, about the death (and life) of one of the most influential figures in the history of being human. Please see Dr. Freeman's bio and bibliography here: philipfreemanbooks.com. Buy his book on Alexander, Hannibal, St. Patrick -- they are all highly readable and accessible but represent the best scholarship you would expect from a chaired professor of classical philology. A Los Angeles hotel with a haunting history. A missing young woman. A disturbing video followed by a shocking discovery. A cold-case mystery that has become an internet phenomenon—and for one determined journalist, a life-changing quest toward uncomfortable truths. Twenty-one-year-old Vancouver student Elisa Lam was last heard from on January 31, 2013, after she checked into downtown L.A.'s Cecil Hotel—a 600-room building with a nine-decade history of scandal and tragedy. The next day, Elisa vanished. A search of the hotel yielded nothing. More than a week later, complaints by guests of foul-smelling tap water led to a grim discovery: Elisa's nude body floating in a rooftop water tank, in an area extremely difficult to access without setting off alarms. The only apparent clue was a disturbing surveillance video of Elisa, uploaded to YouTube in hopes of public assistance. As the eerie elevator video went viral, so did the questions of its tens of millions of viewers. Was Elisa's death caused by murder, suicide, or paranormal activity? Was it connected to the Cecil's sinister reputation? And in that video, what accounted for Elisa's strange behavior? With the help of web sleuths and investigators from around the world, journalist Jake Anderson set out to uncover the facts behind a death that had become a macabre internet meme, as well as a magnet for conspiracy theorists. In poring through Elisa's revealing online journals and social-media posts, Anderson realized he shared more in common with the young woman than he imagined. His search for justice and truth became a personal journey, a dangerous descent into one of America's quiet epidemics. Along the way, he exposed a botched investigation and previously unreported disclosures from inside sources who suggest there may have been a corporate conspiracy and a police cover-up. In Gone at Midnight, Anderson chronicles eye-opening discoveries about who Elisa Lam really was and what—or whom—she was running from, and presents shocking new evidence that may re-open one of the most chilling and obsessively followed true crime cases of the century.

If Alexander The Great Hadn't Died, He Might Have Conquered Europe, Circumnavigated Africa, and Built His Own Silk Road“And Alexander wept, seeing as he had no more worlds to conquer.” That's a quote from Hans Gruber in Die Hard, which is a very convoluted paraphrase from Plutarch's essay collection “Moralia.” Despite the questionable sourcing, there's plenty of truth in that unattributed quote from Mr. Gruber. Alexander the Great's death at 323 BC in Babylon marked the end of the most consequential military campaign in antiquity. He left behind an empire that stretched from Greece to India, planted the seeds of the Silk Road, and made Greek an international language across Eurasia, all in 13 short years. He became and remained the biggest celebrity in the ancient world, probably only replaced by Jesus a few centuries into the Christian era. But what if he had not died as a young man? What if he had lived years or decades more? How much more influence could he have had? We have clues about Alexander's plans for the future – and they come from Greek chroniclers Diodorus and Arrian, writing centuries after his death. They include conquering the Mediterranean coast all the way to the Pillars of Hercules (Rock of Gibraltar), building a tomb for his father Philp that would be as large as the Great Pyramid of Giza, and transplanting populations from Greece to Persia and vice versa to unite his domains through intermarriage. To explore this hypothetical scenario is Anthony Everitt, author of “Alexander the Great: His Life and Mysterious Death.” We look at the life of the most influential person in the ancient world, and explore the ramifications of his life having even more influence.Links for Show Notes:Continue listening to History Unplugged:Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3Ysc7ZgSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3j0QRJyParthenon: https://www.parthenonpodcast.com/history-unplugged-podcastDiscover more episodes of History Unplugged: Lost Airmen: The Epic Rescue of WWII U.S. Bomber Crews Stranded in the Yugoslavian Mountains: https://apple.co/3Weu5wr / https://spoti.fi/3HunolzThe Way that Lincoln Financed the Civil War Led to Transcontinental Railroads, Public Colleges, the Homestead Act, and Income Tax: https://apple.co/3iVtpxs / https://spoti.fi/3iYxtx6After Custer's Last Stand, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse Fought an Impossible Battle To Preserve the Sioux Nation: https://apple.co/3uKbc8F / https://spoti.fi/3BvFLTk Almost President: Stephen Douglas, Thomas Dewey, and Other Failed Candidates That Would've Altered History Most by Winning: https://apple.co/3hgdVDZ / https://spoti.fi/3FlO2ujNo Supply Chain Was More Complicated Than the Allies' During WW2. To explore this hypothetical scenario is Anthony Everitt, author of “Alexander the Great: His Life and Mysterious Death.” We look at the life of the most influential person in the ancient world, and explore the ramifications of his life having even more influence.

On October 28, 1981, in Newburgh Heights, Ohio, 3 young boys made a gruesome discovery, a young man lying face up in a puddle in a ravine. The body was in a "Christ-like" pose with one leg crossed over the other at the ankle.  It seemed to have been deliberately placed. Apart from some minor scratches & bruises, there were no obvious signs of injury. Hours later, the body was positively identified as 17 year old Kurt Sova. An autopsy revealed that he had died 24 -36 hours before his body was found, he had been missing for 5 days. Come along as Mark and Laura discuss this shocking and confusing case. [SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTER] There's light in the darkness. Christina's confusion around the suspicious death of beloved star Stephen "tWitch" Boss led her to connect with a childhood friend, Derek Lewis Gray.    Derek is a writer, filmmaker, and author of the book, "The Sum of All Things: Connecting with the Spirit and God in Us All."   This podcast stems from a Facebook post where the two once saw disagreement. Instead of typing back and forth, they stopped the text thread and scheduled a Zoom. What you are about to hear is an intimate discussion that includes sensitive material.   Facebook thread: CHRISTINA: "Hearing of [tWitch's] death shocked me. The media response triggered me. To claim so quickly that this man's death was due to self-inflicted suicide seems negligent. I don't know him but we're friends of friends. He has close friends who feel similarly. I understand mental health is trending and that many people are depressed. And that it's hard to tell who's ok and who isn't. And yes I agree to be kind to everyone because you don't know what anyone is going through. However, this man called Boss by close friends doesn't appear to have typical circumstances that cause one to kill themselves. Consider his profile — a passionate, successful, glowing, thriving career, young children, healthy relationship, moving his body, etc. I've known friends and family to die by suicide. I accept it. This one doesn't seem fair to him to do so quickly, especially publicly."   DEREK: "I think your heart is in the right place and I believe in your attempt to articulate the need for the media and the collective to use restraint before posting outcomes and assumptions; however, SOME of your points come across as a bit negligent.    First, there is not one profile for depression... I contemplated suicide 3 times in my life. From those who know me today, it would be a surprise even for my wife at the time because I still kept smiling while in public and created the illusion I felt people expected of me.    Second, in many communities, there is a stigma around getting help as being weak. So people keep quiet and learn to be functional while we are suffering. Lastly, when you refer to something as trending it's dismissive. Mental health isn't trending, it's just that more folks are discussing it..."   Releasing this episode feels vulnerable. Either of us owns the truth and this episode aims to authentically share our process and quest to understand reality.       *NOTE: After this recording, Derek sent Christina the voice text shared by Jack "WildChild" Brown (Black'ish star's Dad). Boss sent the message to Brown in May of 2022. Every human goes through struggles. This message is evidence that Boss was willing to talk to friends about personal details and seek help, not that he was capable of suicide.    You may connect with Derek at dereklgray@gmail.com or on IG @dereklewisgray_mfa. On the night of February 8th/early morning hours of February 9th, 2018, 24-year-old David Scott Elmquist died in a fire that was started in his apartment after the Bakken crude oil covering his body caught fire, and he suffered burns to over 90% of his body, soot-filled airways, and blindness. To investigators, this was a simple open and closed case of suicide, but to David's family and many others, he may have been the victim of foul play as well as evidence planting. There are many strange reasons concerning this case as to why there's no way David could have killed himself, according to his family.  From the mysterious untouched patches of skin on his wrists when the rest of his flesh was burned to the missing lighter, unlocked door, and planted knives at the scene, this case is so hard not to think about.  Please check out Sherrilyn Dale and Gavin Fish's documentaries of this case on YouTube, as well as Gavin Fish and Scott Elmquist's websites.  Sherilynn Dale's videos on David:  https://youtu.be/3UiQ6NnXS9c https://youtu.be/RY_fpZH5Ykw https://youtu.be/RekbUz_-L00 Gavin Fish's videos on David: https://youtu.be/bziZEz73W8U https://youtu.be/IxMgMuyFj3w https://youtu.be/IxMgMuyFj3w Gavin's website:  https://gavinfish.com/cases/david-elmquist/ Scott's website:  https://www.truthfordavid.com/ Please sign the petition:  www.change.org/truthfordavid
