This week on The Conversation, Nadine Matheson welcomes the uniquely talented Will Carver, an author known for his darkly original fiction. In this episode, they dive deep into Will's latest novel, Bad Influence, a gripping tale that explores the murky waters of social media and its impact on youth culture. Bad Influence follows two young friends from different social backgrounds who stumble upon the bizarre phenomenon of 'frogging', living undetected in someone else's home. Their adventure takes a dark turn when they target a fitness influencer, leading to unexpected consequences as their lives intertwine with the reality TV world. Will shares his thoughts on the challenges of writing about contemporary issues, the delicate balance of humor and horror, and the importance of authenticity in storytelling. Along the way they discuss why social media is both essential and exhausting for authors, the "forced gratitude" culture in publishing, what it's like to be on panels at book festivals while out of pocket, and the woman who stood in a signing queue at Harrogate just to tell Will she hated his last book, which he took as a win.IThis episode is a thought-provoking exploration of creativity, resilience, and the power of storytelling in a world dominated by digital distractions.Buy Bad Influence Follow Will CarverPre- Order 'The Shadow Carver' PbBuy me a cup of coffee ☕️ | Buy books by my guestsFollow Me Bluesky | Substack | Instagram | Facebook | Threads Hosted on Acast. Track and trace-technologie biedt een oplossing. Send us Fan MailPaper Discussed in this AI Journal Club: Multimodal learning for scalable representation of high-dimensional medical data. Alsaafin A, Shafique A, Alfasly S, Kalari KR and Tizhoosh HR (2026). Front. Digit. Health 7:1709277. doi: 10.3389/fdgth.2025.1709277Episode Overview In this episode, we tackle the infrastructure challenge in digital diagnostics: how do we efficiently store, search, and integrate the overwhelming amount of multimodal data generated by modern medicine? We take a deep dive into a groundbreaking paper from the Kimia Lab at Mayo Clinic that proposes an audacious solution. Learn how researchers are compressing gigapixel whole slide images and complex immune receptor sequences into a tiny, searchable 64-bit binary barcode (a "monogram") to power the next generation of case-based reasoning in oncology.Key Topics Discussed• The Intrinsic Heterogeneity Problem: Pathologists and computational biologists currently face a "silo" problem where visual whole slide images (WSIs) and textual immunogenomic data (T-cell and B-cell receptor sequences) exist in completely different computational worlds. Integrating them is like comparing a satellite photo of a city to a book of poetry written in that city.• Late vs. Early Fusion: Standard "late fusion" models are computationally heavy because they run two full, distinct pipelines, while "early fusion" often leads to the curse of dimensionality, creating huge continuous vectors that are impossible to search through in real-time.• Introducing MarbliX: We break down Multimodal Association and Retrieval with Binary Latent Indexed matriX (MarbliX), a framework designed to compress gigabytes of multimodal data into an 8x8 binary barcode.• Under the Hood of MarbliX (The 3 Phases):    ◦ Phase 1 (Unimodal Transformation): The image data is prepped using SPLICE to segment tissue and fed into a DINO ViT vision transformer, while the messy genomic sequences are harmonized using "Seqwash" and fed into a BERT natural language model. Both output 768-dimensional vectors.    ◦ Phase 2 (Multimodal Latent Association): The AI plays a "translation game" using hybrid autoencoders. One network looks at the tissue image to predict the genetic sequence, and the other looks at the genetics to predict the tissue architecture. This forces the model to learn the shared biological signal connecting phenotype and genotype.    ◦ Phase 3 (Binarization): Using triplet contrastive learning, the model organizes patients in a mathematical space so similar diseases cluster together, eventually squashing the data into just 64 zeros and ones.• The Binary Trade-off & Hamming Distance: While binarization loses some precision compared to continuous floating-point math, it enables the use of "Hamming distance." This simple bitwise operation counts mismatches, allowing a database of 10 million patients to be searched in milliseconds on standard hardware.• Real-World Results: Tested on TCGA datasets, the MarbliX multimodal approach showed a massive 15% jump in retrieval performance over using histopathology images alone, achieving 85% to 89% accuracy in distinguishing lung cancer subtypes.• AI as a Librarian, Not a Judge: By retrieving the top 10 most similar historical cases based on barcode similarity, MarbliX empowers doctors with context and hiSupport the showGet the "Digital Pathology 101" FREE E-book and join us!

Lip lines. Barcode lines. Smoker's lines. They frustrate patients more than almost any other wrinkle because they can age the face fast and they are not simple to fix. In this episode of The Skin Real, Dr. Mary Alice Mina breaks down why upper lip lines form, why they are harder to treat than frown lines, and why there is no single magic solution. She explains the role of the orbicularis oris muscle, repetitive motion, collagen loss, menopause, bone resorption, and sun damage in accelerating these vertical lines. Dr. Mina walks through what actually works. A combination strategy that includes prevention, lifestyle changes, smart topical use, and in-office procedures tailored to your anatomy and stage of aging. She covers: Why Botox must be used carefully around the mouth • When filler helps and when it makes things worse • Why a surgical lip lift may be more appropriate than more volume • The role of microneedling, RF microneedling, CO2 laser, and even phenol peels • How smoking, straws, and unconscious lip movements accelerate lines • Why sunscreen on the lips is harder than you think If you are struggling with lip lines or want to prevent them before they etch in, this episode gives you a realistic, evidence-based roadmap. For a global leader like FedEx, operating at a scale of millions of packages a day, these gaps create operational friction and prevent the kind of flawless visibility their customers expect. How do you find a way to see everything, everywhere, all at once?

Barcodes are about as ordinary as an object can be. Billions of them are scanned each day and they impact everything from how we shop to how we travel to how the global economy is managed. But few people likely give them more than a second thought. In a way, the barcode's ordinariness is the ultimate symbol of its success. However, behind the mundanity of the barcode lies an important history. Barcodes bridged the gap between physical objects and digital databases and paved the way for the contemporary Internet of Things, the idea to connect all devices to the web. They were highly controversial at points, protested by consumer groups and labor unions, and used as a symbol of dystopian capitalism and surveillance in science fiction and art installations. Jordan Frith's book Barcode (Bloomsbury, 2023) tells the story of the barcode's complicated history and examines how an object so crucial to so many parts of our lives became more ignored and more ordinary as it spread throughout the world.

MAGYAR DIVATBEMUTATÓ AMERIKÁBAN - HRIVNÁK TÜNDE ÉS A HALASI CSIPKE TITKAI  Magyarok Óriási Kalandjai Amerikában - MÓKA Podcast    A mai epizód különleges. A Sarasota-i Magyar Fesztiválon beszélgettem Hrivnák Tündével, a BY ME márka alapítójával, aki több mint 25 éve dolgozik azon, hogy a magyar népművészet valódi mestereinek keze munkája a modern világ kifutóira is eljusson. A BY ME kollekció minden darabja több alkotó munkáját viseli magán, és mindenki neve, munkája és szorgalma megbecsült helyet kap.

In this episode, Robert Skitt, Senior Manager at Axiom Armored Transport, joins hosts Reid Jackson and Liz Sertl to discuss the shift from traditional, manual methods to more secure, efficient, and accountable digital solutions.  Financial institutions and the Federal Reserve are demanding greater transparency and control over cash movement, and armored transport teams are under increasing pressure to adapt. Robert walks us through the process of how Axiom is modernizing armored transport, replacing handwritten logs with barcode scans and eManifests.
