"I take BEC in three weeks and need help comprehending the application of the CPA Exam concepts. I recently took BEC and scored 62. I did well in the Economics portion but struggled with Internal Control, COSO principles, Financial management, and IT. Is there a way to better comprehend the material? I am going through the notes, and sometimes it makes sense, then sometimes, I have no idea what the question is asking. Currently, I have Roger CPA Review and Ninja. I did all of the modules for Roger CPA. I review my notes for each section, but I am just memorizing information, not comprehending it. I am getting started with NINJA, and I wish the notes and lectures fit better with the MCQs. Some MCQ topics aren't heavily covered in the lectures and are sometimes very lightly touched on in the notes."

"I am looking for a CPA study plan where I can utilize Roger CPA Review and Ninja together. What is the best way to combine UWorld Roger CPA and Ninja? Some of the sections in Roger CPA Review don't line up with Ninja. I am reading the Ninja book first, then reading the Roger book and taking notes if things need to be clarified and better explained in either book. I am then reading the Ninja notes. The Ninja notes help me understand what I read from Ninja, but the sections are different in Roger. Is there a more efficient method that I should use with both CPA Review programs to maximize my study sessions?"

Roger Philipp CPA, the founder of Roger CPA Review, joined us for this week's episode of Life In Accounting, a podcast production of WhereAccountantsGo.com. From CPA to Instructor Just as with all episodes, we start at the beginning of the story and actually the beginning of Roger's career sounds very similar to that of a CPA firm owner! Roger started out as an entrepreneur in 4th grade selling candy to his fellow students, and from there realized that he thoroughly enjoyed business.  And with accounting being the language of business, it just made sense to take that direction in college. However, after a few years in accounting he decided that it was time to do something different. It was at that point that he decided to take his previous college professor up on the offer to become a CPA review instructor, and a new career was born. From the Ashes Rises a Leader After many years of being an instructor in his former professor's CPA review businesses, the review course industry had become much more competitive and unfortunately his employer was not able to continue to make payroll. It was at this point that Roger had a choice to make… continue doing what he loved or go find something new.  Depending on how you look at it, he really did both!  He decided to take what he knew from his many years of instructing experience and form Roger CPA Review in 2001.  With the moral support of his former employer, he was able to scrape together the materials and found that there was definitely still a good market in his area.  Jump forward many years later now, and Roger has what many describe as one of the most entertaining CPA review courses around, thereby making it much easier to remember the materials for those looking for critical assistance with passing the exam. Interested in Roger's thoughts on best practices, or maybe more details on his own story of success? Make sure to listen in on this interview using the player below:

CPA Exam Study Motivation with August 2017 CPA Exam Score Release - CPA Reviewed #79 Holi - I am a recent college graduate going to work for a Big Four Accounting Firm in the fall. Because I have some time before then, I budgeted four months to take all four sections of the CPA. I started with the beast, and I studied for FAR. I really put in the time and took the exam last week. But I cannot shake the feeling that I failed and it's weighing heavily on me. Because of the new exam format and changes, however, my score is being held for 10 weeks -- until mid-August. By then, I would have hopefully taken all four sections without knowing any of my scores. This is a terrible feeling because I am starting to become unmotivated without knowing if I am tracking score wise. And worse case I fail, I would have to restudy old material instead of it being fresh in my mind. How do I stay motivated not knowing any scores? Should I take FAR again before I get my CPA Exam score back in Aug just because I think I failed -- and while it's still fresh in my mind? (What about the financial burden?) Ed - I graduated college in 2006, took the summer off and then started studying. I took all 4 parts and failed. Then I took auditing and FAR and passed. I could not pass BEC and Reg before losing credit. Two years had gone by and I gave up. Now I am looking to get back into the studying and passing the exam. For the four sections of the test, what order should I take them? Priscilla - I am currently studying for REG using Roger CPA Review and I am a divorced/single mother with a 5yr old Princess. However, I am currently NOT working so I can completely focus on my CPA Exam. I am sitting for REG on May 30th, 2017 and I am currently on Section 5 Estates, Trusts & Gift Taxes out of 21 Sections. How should I tackle the rest of my studying? I am nervous and believe it's way too much material to cover by May 30th, should I reschedule REG for July 2017? (I graduated with my Accounting degree in 2008 and will be doing my MAcc once I am done studying for my CPA Exam). Hany - I have a question for AUD. When an external auditor use the work of internal auditor. To whom does an internal auditor should report ? Frank - Probably I'm not your typical CPA exam candidate. I'm in my late 30s I have a senior corporate finance position and have been a finance director in several countries. I have decided to take the CPA and in the past 4 months, I was able to pass AUD and BEC. Currently, my time is flexible and sometimes I can study during the day. I have been offered a senior position as a regional FD for an international market. Likely this opportunity will disrupt my studies. What would be your advice, take the new role or pass the 2 exams and then see what happens job wise? My AUD credit will expire in August 2018. Daniel - I have 14 days to study for audit, unfortunately, kept delaying the exam due to work (internship), I am now free from work. Is it double to finish audit in 14, I have bought the ninja notes and was wondering if I should even watch the Becker videos or just do ninja notes and Becker MCQ. Tracy - I am scheduled to take Reg on July 3rd, all CPA reviews say that first have of year tax is from 2016 info and second half is for 2017 year. So here I am thinking I am going to have to restudy in 3 days these changes! How familiar are you of this transition in the past with candidates along your journey? I know it shouldn't be major changes- mostly thresholds and stuff. however this is the CPA and I walked out of BEC thinking it was easy only to open the score to see a 75. So you can understand my concern :) Also..... with these changes when will you be updating Ninja Notes (if you say July 1, I may cry:)) I hope to do a re-write about 2 weeks before and think it would be awesome if updates are released before to get familiar with the different but similar material.

In this episode, we cover:   Intro: NASBA/AICPA extend CPA Exam testing window 10 days (forum discussion here) (nasba article here) 1. Stephanie - Hi Jeff, I recently found out I failed FAR for the second time (~60s). My score only went up 2 points from the first time I took it. I have been studying FAR since September and just feel very discouraged. Do you think I should try and take BEC or AUD and save FAR for later? I am working 40 hours and summer is when my work will be slow so I'm not sure if i should focus on FAR in the summer or just keep pushing through FAR and try again? Thank you for your help! 2. Jonathan - took FAR in January after studying for three months. I got a 71. I knew the reason was because I got hit with three simulations from the last chapter on Becker which I did not know as well. I started studying for Audit while I was waiting for my FAR score. I took Audit Feb 29, just got my grade, and got a 71. I thought I killed that test. Everything seemed to go great. I don't know where to start. While I was waiting for my audit score, I started reviewing FAR for my 2nd retake, thinking that Audit was in the books. Now, however, I don't know what to do. I don't know if I should retake FAR or Audit April 1. I don't know what to study more for Audit. 3. Amanda - Jeff, I just found out that I didn't pass FAR with a 72. This will be my third attempt with FAR (74, 70, and 72). Unfortunately, I lost my credit for AUD, which I passed by reviewing for one week with a 81. At this point, do I restudy for FAR and attempt early April or focus on passing AUD again? I'm currently working full time at a CPA firm and have a small family. Thanks for any and all advice. 4. Valerie - I've taken FAR twice and got a 70 and a 73. I've been using Roger CPA Review and am considering getting your NINJA MCQ. I was wondering if there are any reviews that I can look at? (link: NINJA MCQ Trending vs Actual Exam Scores) 5. Carrie - Jeff, I asked in another email if the NINJA Notes layout mirrors the NINJA Book and thought it would be a good podcast question. I also have a note taking question. I also believe that the key to solidifying my learning is writing. However, I have found with my current "highlighter heavy" program, it is nearly impossible to take thorough notes while running the video as it moves along so quickly. Short of stopping and starting over and over again do you have any recommendation? I am currently using the highlighter and making the class notes in my book and later transcribing these into MY set of notes but I was wondering if I was missing something simple. 6. Douglas - Jeff, I just wanted to thank you for how helpful your materials have been so far. I am not sure if people reach out to you personally but I am getting extremely nervous about my exam. I am going into a real estate company as an analyst where I will be working under the partial supervision of a CPA and accounting is held in very high esteem, though it is not an absolute requirement as at an accounting firm. My father, mother, grandfather and uncle are all CPAs. With this new job beginning, and my wife due to have our first kid in May, my nerves are getting wrecked. I passed BEC and AUD so far and it took me 5x to pass AUD. The most frustrating part was when I took it the 4th time and my multiple choice score went up and my Sim score went down! I'm not sure why I e-mailed but I know you were in a similar situation and you had 3 kids when you passed. 7. Kristen - Jeff - hey! I was wondering if you're looking for any more bloggers? I am starting the CPA journey (again). Moving, kids, job changes have halted previous progress. I am a Sr Manager at my current firm with a CISA.
