On the 15th of July, 2009, 30 year old former journalist Teoh Beng Hock walked into the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Selangor headquarters in Shah Alam, Malaysia. He was there on investigation for suspected misuse of public funds, and was called in as a witness. However, things would take a turn when he didn't return home later that evening, and in fact, CCTV cameras showed that he never left the building. Instead, he would be discovered the next afternoon nine floors below the MACC's office, sprawled on the fifth floor balcony, in a pool of his own blood. Part 1 - We dig into Teoh Beng Hock's profile, his political involvements, and why he was called in to the MACC headquarters on that fateful day. Through the triumphal entry and the cleansing of the temple, Jesus publicly announced his claim to be the Messiah. The leaders of Jerusalem responded with a campaign to discredit him publicly that failed miserably. Knowing what would come, Jesus stayed the course until that fateful moment in Gethsemane when they took him into custody. Join us to relive the magnificent last days of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection. Mark 11:1-2, 7 When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the donkey, he enacted an ancient prophecy (Zech 9:9-10) and simulated the coronation of a king (2 Kgs 9:11-13). Even the palm branches were politically charged (1 Macc 13:51-52). Mark 11:9-10 Even more striking was the proclamation of the crowd, associating Jesus with the coming Kingdom of David. Coming into Jerusalem this way crossed the line. Mark 11:15-19 Cleansing the temple got everyone's attention. Jesus interfered with the sacrificial system and the flow of money. The leaders of Jerusalem responded with a campaign to discredit Jesus publicly through stumper questions. Jesus answered them all and countered by confronting them with seven woes (Mat 23:13-16). Mark 14:1-9 Allowing a woman to pour out an ointment that cost 300 denarii on his head provoked criticism from onlookers. Jesus defended the woman for her ostentatious display of generosity. Mark 14:10-11 Judas went to the priests to betray Jesus. They needed an opportunity when Jesus was away from the crowds so a riot didn't break out. Judas could tell them where Jesus was at night, so they could arrest him secretly. Mark 14:32-36 At Gethsemane, Jesus knew his time was short. He had to stay the course, even if that meant he would face ridicule, torture, and death on a cross. He prayed and prayed and prayed, asking for a way out. The answer was, “No”. Jesus resigned himself to his Father's will and pushed through courageously to face his betrayer and those sent to arrest him. Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC, JACC: Case Reports Deputy Editor, is joined by author Alexander C Sacher, DO, discussing this study from Sacher et al presented at ACC.25 and published in JACC: Case Reports. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is known for thrombotic events and pregnancy complications, but its association with myocarditis is rare and poorly understood. In this case, a 44-year-old female presented with acute chest tightness, elevated cardiac biomarkers, and severe anemia. Diagnostic workup revealed ST-segment changes on ECG, preserved left ventricular function on echocardiography, and myocardial inflammation on cardiac MRI, suggestive of acute myocarditis. Positive antiphospholipid antibodies confirmed APS. She was managed with close multidisciplinary follow up. This case highlights the role of cardiac MRI in diagnosing myocarditis early, guiding management strategies, and the need for heightened clinical suspicion in APS patients presenting with cardiac symptoms.

Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC, JACC: Case Reports Deputy Editor, is joined by author Dena Hayes, MD, discussing this study from Hayes et al presented at ACC.25 and published in JACC: Case Reports. The diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is often challenging, particularly in atypical cases. The authors describe a case of a previously healthy 33-year-old woman who was found to have a biatrial mass and evidence of a diffuse inflammatory or neoplastic process on multimodality imaging. Percutaneous biopsy of the cardiac mass was performed and histopathology revealed granulomas consistent with CS. This case adds to the growing number of reports of CS presenting as an intracardiac mass.

What type of impact did he have on you? Are there any memories from your time in the program that really stick out?01:56: [Will Eldridge]: Yeah, of course. Ben is this amazing dad figure for a lot of us who found our way to the MAcc. I say that because he has these great dad jokes, but he also helps a lot of people find their way and is someone who has made accounting, which gets a bad rap in a lot of circles, you know, the favorite class that some people take. [02:26] And, you know, when they announced bringing this program back to Rice, there were no current or former students to speak to, but Ben Lansford had been hired. And I got coffee with him, I remember, and started talking about the program, the opportunities. And it was just a great connection that I know he's made with a lot of the students going through the program, and he really helped me understand how I could marry my current background with a master's degree in accounting and make that transition despite having not lot of accounting experience yet and gave me that confidence to make the transition. After realizing that accounting wasn't his long-term goal, Will pivoted to strategy consulting.I figured that I loved the client service aspect of the job I was in. I, at some point, figured out the accounting and financial reporting path wasn't what I wanted to do long term, but I wanted to stay in client service. Did some exploring, I actually circled back to the Center for Career Development at Rice, reaching out to them to talk about different paths to explore and spoke to some other alums. Figured out I wanted to go into strategy consulting, so, a bit more of results-oriented work in some ways but keeping that analysis piece that I had learned as an auditor when we're looking at trends. And with that, I figured out the best way to do that would be to go to business school to set myself up for that recruiting process and eventuality. The power of empathy in consulting19:10: [Brian Jackson]: What skills do you really draw upon to buy that credibility with your clients?19:16: [Will Eldridge]: For one, approaching whatever you're presenting to them with a mindset of context reset, you're deep in the details, and it's hard to sometimes pull up and look at the work that you're presenting and remember the limited context that your client might have and how much else they have going on. So, there's definitely a level of empathizing that is really critical. And so, to put yourself in their shoes and think, you know, what are they coming at this from? What do they care about? What do they need to get out of this? And what is the one or two things they should take away from this conversation is a good frame of mind to take.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profiles:Will Eldridge | Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University Brian Jackson | Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University Listen to The Sky Is Not the Limit feat. **This episode was recorded prior to some of the other episodes of Season 3. Shownotes  We talk about the role of spirituality in death a lot on the show, but with everything there are always two sides to the conversation. Sometimes in loss, people feel despondent enough  to want to contact the dead.  With popular shows that glamorize avenues such as mediums, holistic healing, yoga, reiki and other  new age practices, it makes one wonder what's the harm?  Andrea Bear interviews Susan Brinkman, author and award-winning journalist about necromancy (invoking  the dead) and  the dangers of the new age. Listen to their conversation  and how these practices go against God's wishes and sheds light on who is really conversing on the other side. Guest Bio Susan Brinkmann, O.C.D.S., is an author and award-winning journalist and a member of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites. She serves as Director of New Age Research for Women of Grace® and is a frequent guest on EWTN's Women of Grace® television show. She is the founder of Live Catholic, an educational nonprofit devoted to teaching authentic Catholic prayer in the Carmelite tradition to the faithful. Susan formerly worked as a Correspondent for the Catholic Standard & Times, the newspaper for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. For the last 10 years she has been the lead researcher for Women of Grace's New Age Q&A Blog which is the largest blog of its kind in the world. She has also authored eleven books, including The Learn to Discern Compendium: Is It Christian or New Age which has an imprimatur from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. What were the circumstances that prompted you to reach out? 2. Reflect on the conversation and how Susan shares why God does not permit necromancy. How has this changed your view on the role of the afterlife?  3. In times of loss how can the Saints be a source of comfort?  4. How can the devil manipulate mediums and those who engage to think he is helping instead of hurting?  5. God does allow our loved ones to be intercessors through prayer. What prayers can you offer for your loved one to insure their place in heaven as well as comfort for your heart?  6. What is your mourning glory? Prayer for the soul of Joey P.

I'm going to read a bit from the website NCResistsTheGrandJury.Wordpress.Com: What is a Grand Jury? In the federal legal system, the grand jury is used to decide whether someone should be charged (“indicted”) for a serious crime. The grand jury hears evidence presented by the prosecutor: the U.S. Attorney. The grand jury uses subpoenas to gather this evidence. It can subpoena documents, physical evidence, and witnesses to testify. The “special” federal grand jury, created in 1970, can be used to investigate “possible” organized criminal activity rather than a specific crime. The California legal system also has grand juries, but it is optional whether criminal prosecutions are initiated by grand jury indictment, or by a complaint by the District Attorney and preliminary hearing before a judge. How is a Grand Jury Different Than a Trial Jury? Unlike the “petit” jury, which is used to determine guilt in a trial, a grand jury consists of 16 to 23 jurors who are not screened for bias. The purpose of the grand jury is not to determine guilt or innocence, but to decide whether there is probable cause to prosecute someone for a felony crime. The grand jury operates in secrecy and the normal rules of evidence do not apply. The prosecutor runs the proceedings and no judge is present. Defense lawyers are not allowed to be present in the grand jury room and cannot present evidence, but may be available outside the room to consult with witnesses. The prosecutor and the grand jury members may not reveal what occurred in the grand jury room and witnesses cannot obtain a transcript of their testimony. How Has the Grand Jury Been Used by the State? Because of their broad subpoena powers and secretive nature, grand juries have been used by the government to gather information on political movements and to disrupt those movements by causing fear and mistrust. The grand jury lends itself to being used for improper political investigation due in part to the prosecutor's ability to question witnesses without regard for rules that prohibit irrelevant, unreliable or unlawfully obtained evidence. Those called before the grand jury may be compelled to answer any question, even those relating to lawful personal and political activities. That information has been used by the government as a basis to conduct further surveillance and disruption of political dissent. When used against political movements, the grand jury causes fear and mistrust because persons who refuse to answer questions about their First Amendment political activities, friends and associates may be jailed for the life of the grand jury: up to 18 months. If a witness asserts their Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, they may be forced to accept immunity or go to jail for contempt. Even a witness who attempts to cooperate can be jailed if minor inconsistencies are found in their testimony. Such a perjury charge may stand even when the grand jury fails to hand down any indictment for what it was ostensibly investigating. The grand jury is a complicated and opaque process, by design.  Our movements have decades of experience resisting grand juries, and there are resources available to learn more and support those who resist. If you have been contacted by federal law enforcement, the National Lawyers Guild has a national federal defense hotline at 212-679-2811. . ... . .. Is there any truth to that interpretation? 31:46 – I find it's hard to use 2 Macc 12:46 to defend Purgatory to Protestants because they don't believe in that book. How do you deal with that? 40:20 – How do we answer someone who says that God is Jehovah? 45:22 – How do we answer free-gracers that bring up Rom 3:20 as proof that works of the law are all works? 49:50 – What is the biblical evidence for inclusivism, meaning that God has mercy for those who through no fault of their own have not heard the gospel? And if there's time… Why does Acts 1:5 talk about a water baptism and a holy spirit baptism, but Eph 4:5 says “one baptism.” …

Arts and Entertainment: Rancho Cordova is known as the "City of Events" and houses one of the best Art Complex in our region The MACC. The City has its own orchestra, Symphony D'oro, a Swing Dance Band, a Black Box Theatre, and features one of the largest July 4th fireworks displays in the region, and a whole slate of large outdoor events. Every month Director/ Curator of The MACC, Cheryl Gleason speaks to visual artists, musicians, actors, theatre groups as well as other notable influencers in the art scene in the Sacramento Region. It is not uncommon to hear people marvel at the explosion of the arts in Rancho Cordova, and for good reason. Where ever you go in our city, you are likely to experience a bit of art – whether painted on the side of a utility box, as music heard wafting through a grocery store or enjoyed during a casual wander through the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center.  It's true that the arts have continued to grow in Rancho Cordova in so many ways that it is easy to forget that it has been only 10 years since this spark was ignited, and how the wonderful Marsha Mason has guided it to success.  Marsha brought a background as a landscape architect with experience running large programs in the public sector to Rancho Cordova's newborn arts movement back in 2012. She was CEO of Sites Pacific, Inc., a landscape architectural firm specializing in public works projects and visual impact assessments. She taught landscape architecture courses as a lecturer at U.C. Davis. Marsha served as President of the Sierra Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, was a founder of WalkSacramento.  Those skills all come together in 2012 as Marsha joined a small group of local artists to work with the Cordova Community Council to form what has become known as “Rancho Cordova Arts.” That year, the first City Hall exhibit launched with a fine art exhibit of local artists aptly named “Genesis.”  Most artists are content – and prefer -- to simply work on their art, but Marsha is not like most artists. Understanding the importance of having an organization of people committed to an artistic future, she rolled up her sleeves to accomplish less glamourous foundational tasks like creating a non-profit organization, developing a website, creating a newsletter and focusing artistic energy in the community to produce memorable art events.

Mac Saturn singer, Carson Macc joins me today, as their "Hard To Sell" record finally drops this Friday, January 26th, with a show to celebrate that night at the Fillmore Detroit.  The process of making this record began long ago. Working with Al Sutton at Rust Belt Studios, they brought what they thought were solid songs, but they weren't. "We brought them so many songs that we thought were it!" Carson said that although they didn't use those songs, they learned much about their songwriting process. More on Al and others who helped them in a minute.  As far as pegging this band's sound, that's a tough one. Carson describes it like this "We're from Detroit. We're Rock and Roll, but we're from Detroit so we got a little bit of funk and soul" He said people always compare them to so many different bands. "We like to do things authentically" This band does not shy away from being from Detroit. "You gotta say it. You've got to wear that on your sleeve, because why wouldn't you?" They want to be part of the musical fabric that's so strong from years gone by. They are the future of that sound.   As far as singers he's been influenced by, that's another one you just can't point to. He says he takes elements from all of his inspirations "...and be completely free on top of this band, that has some serious players in it." Yes, the band is very tight.  As far as the tour is concerned, Mac Saturn is hopping right into it. They're going all over the country from January 26 at the Fillmore, right through until St. Patrick's Day.  Carson was never at a loss to talk about working with Al Sutton at Rust Belt Studios in Royal Oak. "He was always pushing us to see how far we could take this sound." Kid Rock guitarist and backup singer, Marlon Young and Hershell Boone were all on board in the creation of this album. He sang their praises and spoke to how much he learned from all of them.  You can watch the video for "Mint Julep" here.  It was great to talk to Carson. Wishing nothing but the best for him and the band as they start out on this trek. You can meet the band on Thursday at Dearborn Music in Dearborn starting at 6 pm for a listening/meet & greet party.

Conservators and artists have worked this past year to restore a work of art created by artist George Morrison half a century ago. Morrison's vision is felt by the people who helped to restore his work, and by those redesigning the building where the mural lives. The late artist George Morrison was from a small town near the Grand Portage reservation in northern Minnesota. He attended art school in Minneapolis and New York City and was part of a leading generation of American artists working as abstract expressionists. Known for his intricate wood sculpture and collage, George Morrison was commissioned to create the mural for the Minneapolis American Indian Center in 1974.Morrison once told a biographer the design was inspired by feathers. Its chevron V-shapes work in unison to create an optical illusion.  Although never formally named, Morrison suggested the work might be called — “Turning the Feather Around: A Mural for the Indian.”  Sam Olbekson is an architect and the chair of the Minneapolis American Indian Center's board of directors. He is a part of a team working on the center's renovation.“That pattern and the way it's constructed allowed us to take it apart piece by piece, and one of the main goals of this entire project is to preserve this piece art,” says Olbekson. In 2022, the Midwest Arts Conservation Center, or MACC, answered the center's call to restore the mural.Chief conservator Megan Emery served as the manager of the project. MACC called on another team of conservators from Montana with expertise in rigging and reinstalling complicated works of art.“We decided we were going to have to start the project by doing full documentation with photographs of the mural to basically map out exactly out how it looked and how everything was laid out,” says Emery.“When it was time to start to start the project, we physically removed every single board, and that's when we need a team of people.” Josie Hoffman is an Anishinaabe multi-media artist whose family is from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Hoffman was tasked by MACC to work on the restoration.“There wasn't a ton of problems. And actually, when we were taking it down it came down really easily. It was also the documentation of [the mural],” says Hoffman. “It's about over 700 cedar boards, so it's about documenting and making sure we have all these pieces in the right place.”Once the pieces were carefully removed, they were packed into crates and shipped to specialists at the firm Wolf Magritte in Missoula, Mont. The firm cleaned the mural again and worked to design a series of interlocking panels on which to mount jigsaw-like pieces for reinstallation. When the full sun hits the mural at its new home on the east side of the building, the contrast of the light and dark surfaces of the cedar planks is striking — adding a sense of movement.  George Morrison mural in Minneapolis preserved for future generations by Olbekson says the restoration of the mural is a part of the long-term vision for community development along Franklin Avenue. “Where it was on the building ... [George Morrison] was so intent on it being open to the public. So that art was accessible to the community. He wanted it to be large scale, in your face, out, and unapologetically Indigenous on Franklin Avenue,” says Olbekson. Olbekson points out the mural's new location on the east side of the center will mean that it has a different experience with environmental elements and weather. “We tried to preserve the aging, the integrity of it,” says Olbekson. “It was about making sure the original artist's intention was conveyed in the new building, to do it in a way that will make it last there in another fifty years.”The restoration of the mural is part of the Minneapolis American Indian Center's first major renovation since opening in 1975.
