Avoid costly mistakes with your trophy deer. Get expert field care and taxidermy tips to preserve hide quality, cooling, and mounting perfection from start to finish. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Don't: Cut Corners on Field Care Common Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Trophy's Quality Gutting: Know where to cut and where not to cut—especially as you move toward the neck. Improper cuts can make caping and mounting much more difficult for your taxidermist. Skinning: Always leave plenty of hide for the type of mount you want. You can never leave too much, but you can definitely leave too little. Dull Knives: A sharp knife is essential. We recommend Outdoor Edge Knives for their quick, replaceable sharp blades. Cooling Head & Hide: Moisture retention is key—don't let the hide or head dry out. Cool your trophy as quickly as possible to preserve quality. Time: Deliver your animal to the taxidermist within 24 hours whenever possible. If that's not an option, freeze it until delivery. We cape our deer with the entire hide still attached to the head. The cape is then folded and rolled under the deer head, placed in a garbage bag, and tied securely around the base of the antlers. Be careful not to bend or distort the ears. Do: Communicate Clearly with Your Taxidermist & Understand Expectations Research: Before the hunt, review potential taxidermists' work so you know who you want to use and what quality to expect. Time: Ask about turnaround time. A 1–2 year completion window is common for quality mounts. Vision: Discuss the mounting style, pose, habitat, and details such as head position, ear placement, and expression. Providing photos of mounts you like can be extremely helpful. Cost: Taxidermy is a major investment. Expect to make a deposit (often 50% or more) when dropping off your animal. Be sure you understand the terms and conditions before committing. Pickle Juice Brine For Venison Pickle juice is your MUST TRY brine for anything from lean pheasant breast to venison and more! That leftover juice in your pickle jar is GOLD, and it's ready to pour over, bath all of your various cuts. What this brine does is tenderizes the meat without removing the moisture as well as takes off the edge of "gamey" taste. This brine works well with steaks, backstraps and roasts! 1-3 hours for smaller cuts while a roast, depending on size, may take up to 24 hours in the brine.  After the brine bath, pat dry the meat and cook, season as you typically prefer. Livestock Marketing Specialist Comments On What Is Next For Cattle & Beef Markets Despite recent volatility, cattle market fundamentals remain unchanged. Supply and demand conditions are the same as they were three weeks ago — but political noise and policy rumors have fueled short-term panic across the beef industry. Beef Imports & Tariff Talk:  LImited Real Impact Recent political chatter around increased beef imports from Argentina and reduced tariffs on Brazilian beef has rattled markets, but the actual impact is minimal. Argentina remains an insignificant import source with no effect on U.S. beef prices. Lower tariffs on Brazil might slightly increase processing beef imports, returning the market to pre-August conditions, when lean trimming prices hit record highs. Even with these changes, steak and high-quality beef prices in the U.S. will remain unaffected. Data gaps from the government shutdown make short-term analysis difficult, but fundamentals are steady. USDA's Beef Industry Proposals Offer Long-Term, Not Immediate, Relief The USDA's “Fortify the American Beef Industry” initiative includes regulatory updates, expanded access to grazing lands, and new packing infrastructure. While positive for the future, these measures won't impact cattle supply, demand, or prices in the short term. Even if Mexican cattle imports resume, any market effect will take months to appear, leaving current feeder cattle supplies largely unchanged. China Trade Rumors Could Support Future Prices Talks of a potential U.S.–China trade thaw could eventually boost beef exports. A year ago, China accounted for 15.3% of U.S. beef exports; by July, that share had collapsed to 1.2%. Reopening this market would add significant price support for U.S. cattle producers. So far, record-high domestic prices have masked the loss of the Chinese export channel, but renewed trade would strengthen fundamentals moving forward. Political Volatility Delays Industry Recovery While political developments may bring both risks and opportunities, the net impact remains marginal. The two- to four-year price outlook for cattle and beef is unchanged. However, continued government intervention and political rhetoric add uncertainty — a real cost to producers, consumers, and lenders. This instability will likely slow herd rebuilding efforts, already projected to extend through the end of the decade. Micro Adventures Finding Big Joy in Small Adventures Sometimes, the best adventures don't require plane tickets or elaborate packing lists—they just need a free afternoon and a willingness to step outside. Over the past year, I've become obsessed with what's known as micro-adventures. They're quick, local, and wildly rewarding. What Exactly Is a Micro-Adventure? A micro-adventure is a small, simple trip close to home that brings a sense of exploration and refreshment without the logistics of a full-blown vacation. Think sleeping under the stars in your backyard, kayaking before work, or driving an hour to hike a new trail. British adventurer Alastair Humphreys popularized the idea, but honestly—it's for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to break out of their daily routine. For me, a micro-adventure might mean grabbing my binoculars, a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa, and watching the sunrise over the Knife River. It's not far, but it feels like a reset button for my brain. Why Micro-Adventures Matter We often treat adventure as something we have to “earn” through vacation time, money, or elaborate plans. But in reality, our need for nature and novelty is daily—not annual. Here's what I've found after making micro-adventures part of my monthly rhythm: They recharge your mental batteries. Even a two-hour nature break can shift your mood dramatically. They're accessible. You don't need fancy gear or tons of time. They spark gratitude. Exploring nearby landscapes reminds you how beautiful “ordinary” places can be. Winterize RV / Camper Tips  Tis the season to winterize that RV if you haven't already. Hopefully you have! However if not, here is a tip that's not shared, talked about... Creating Your Version Of An Owners Manual Hopefully your RV or Camper came with an owners manual, and if not... Now is the time to go online to print it off. Place it in a binder that stays with it. Why to do this? We all have lapses in memory but how you will build upon this owners manual will help with the selling of your RV / Camper too. Now that the camping season has ended, look back - and write or type up things such as: "What Needs To Be Done" before using again, in say the spring.  Maintenance, Replacements and/or Modifications performed. Include dates of oil changes, tires, water pump. Add Insight: every unit operates differently and comes with its own challenges, make it headache free for yourself trying to remember or give that next owner the understanding to confidently feel ready to roll down the road. We began our version the day our RV was purchased and continue to add to the binder which never leaves the camper. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Beef Packer Concentration Is The Problem Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a television interview that concentration in the beef packing industry needs to be addressed, called Brazilian ownership a “major issue” in the sector and suggested smaller processors produce “healthier” food. In a Fox News appearance, she discussed issues of ground beef prices, imports and U.S. herd size. “Is there something that needs to be done about the processors?” host Will Cain asked in a followup question. “One hundred percent, yes, when you have four major processors, two owned by the Brazilians,” Rollins replied, holding up two fingers in a V, “so half of that is not even American owned. You have a major issue when they are processing 85% of the beef in America. Season 5, EPISODE 260 Cattle & Producer Groups React To Potential Imports of Argentine Beef   Last Sunday President Donald Trump said the United States could purchase Argentinian beef in an attempt to bring down prices for American consumers.  This sparked immediate reaction from our cattle associations and organizations. Reference: https://apnews.com/article/beef-argentina-us-consumers-prices-f7fadbe1b3fef4646f9c3623f901209a National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) Reaction To Argentine Beef NCBA's family farmers and ranchers have numerous concerns with importing more Argentinian beef to lower prices for consumers. This plan only creates chaos at a critical time of the year for American cattle producers, while doing nothing to lower grocery store prices," said NCBA CEO Colin Woodall. "Additionally, Argentina has a deeply unbalanced trade relationship with the U.S. In the past five years Argentina has sold more than $801 million of beef into the U.S. market. By comparison, the U.S. has sold just over $7 million worth of American beef to Argentina. Argentina also has a history of foot-and-mouth disease, which if brought to the United States, could decimate our domestic livestock production. Increasing imports under current rules ultimately benefits foreign suppliers and multinational packers, while putting U.S. ranchers on the losing end and depriving American consumers of honest transparency at the meat counter. This negates any theoretical benefit of using more imports to drive down domestic beef prices. We urge the president to manage imports, restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, and put an end to the monopolistic control that packers and retailers have over our beef supply chain. Doing so will incentivize America's ranchers to rebuild and expand the U.S. herd to meet our national security needs and ensure that consumer beef prices are determined by competitive market forces. Decorations & Food - By far this is the EASIEST party to prepare to host! The pumpkins are decorations. We toss up some orange lights outside, fill the front yard with pumpkins to give the "Pumpkin Patch" illusion AND as a bonus inside the shop there is a BLACK Christmas tree decorated with ghosts, spiders and skeletons! Food - super simple. We make Tigger's famous chili paired with nachos and of course a charcuterie board filled with meats that we've harvested such as summer sausage, deer jerky plus add in some fruit, homemade jams and nuts! Take it from us - This is the Family and Friends gathering that the kids and adults will remember for years to come! Spooky Ghost Stories That Are Actually True The Bell Witch Haunting (Tennessee, 1817–1821) A Tennessee family was tormented by an invisible entity that scratched, slapped, and even spoke to them. The haunting was so intense that even President Andrew Jackson reportedly visited the farm—and left in a hurry. The Amityville Horror (New York, 1975) The Lutz family fled their newly purchased house just 28 days after moving in, claiming it was haunted by demonic forces. The Lutz family passed multiple polygraphs, and the house has drawn countless paranormal investigations. Justin and Bec decided that since it's been a while since we've covered MGM's "Kissin' Cousins" on TCBCast (and since Bec hadn't seen it since she was a kid) that they'd tackle the very limited number of recordings remaining from the September 1963 instrumental and October 1963 vocal overdub sessions for the film soundtrack while also giving Bec a chance to give her thoughts on the movie. Naturally, the pair discuss some lyrics and songs cut from the movie and album, bonus songs on the album that are carried over from the May 1963 sessions, as well as a few demos that have surfaced which were submitted for potential inclusion. For Song of the Week, Justin keeps to the theme of the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and gives a very brief overview of the history of "On Top of Old Smokey" leading up to Elvis singing it in character in the film "Follow That Dream." Released in 2001 when every entertainment franchise on Earth was racing to cash in on the trading card game gold rush sparked by Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, Bandai decided their digital monsters deserved a piece of that sweet, sweet card-slinging action. The twist? They didn't just adapt the existing Digimon trading card game – oh no, that would be far too simple. Instead, they created an entirely NEW card game exclusively for this PS1 title, because apparently someone at BEC thought “You know what kids collecting physical cards really need? A completely different set of rules that only exists in digital form!” What emerged was a gloriously polygonal fever dream where Veemon, Hawkmon, and Armadillomon became your partners in a card-battling odyssey through Battle Arenas, all while you sacrifice Digimon from your hand like some kind of digital monster cult leader gathering “DP” (Digivolve Points, not whatever your brain just went to) to evolve your creatures into increasingly ridiculous forms. Season 5, Episode 259 Why Proper Prep Matters: Upland Game Bird Taxidermy Basics The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts due to the fragile pin feathers. Best to mount pheasants harvested in November and December. Do not ring the neck of a possible pheasant to mount as it will stretch the neck. Cool the pheasant immediately. Wrap the feet and beak in wet paper towels. Double bag the pheasant before placing it in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist. Do NOT place birds in panty hose. A panty hose causes a bird to quickly dry out during freezing making it difficult, to almost impossible, to mount by a taxidermist at a later date. How Meal Kits Compare to DIY Cooking (Pros & Cons) Meal Kit Companies: Examples - Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef too many to mention. I have personal experience with Hello Fresh, one of the oldest of the Meal Kit Companies out there. Are Meal Kit Companies actually “Good”, like taste good? YES - There are typically close to a 100 different recipes to choose from, and the meals typically take only 30 minutes. What's included? Your proteins of choice plus delicious sides. Never liked Sweet Potatoes… Follow their easy recipes, and you might change your mind. I did! Are the ingredients Fresh? YES! They are packed in a box with ice and in packaging that keeps everything fresh, if there was ever a leak - No questions, money was returned with the option to send another meal. Cost? Is it really affordable? Depends on your spending habits. If you are someone that is tempted by “Impulse Buys” like… Ohhhh I need that, even though it's not on “The Grocery List”... EPISODE 103  DETAILS The Cattlemen's Beef Board Sets $38.1M Budget Beef promotion, consumer information, foreign marketing, producer communication and research will be among the top fiscal priorities for the Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) in fiscal 2026. The organization that also manages the Beef Checkoff program is committing a total of $38.1 million to support the industry through a plan that also includes funding for 14 grant proposals, the group announced. The 2026 fiscal plan also includes: $25.1 million to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, $7.9 million to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and $1.8 million to the Cattlemen's Beef Board. The CBB's fiscal 2026 budget for the fiscal year that started Oct. 1 remains subject to USDA approval. President Trump says he may end some trade relationships with China in light of the trading partner's refusal to buy soybeans from U.S. farmers. China is the world's largest importer of soybeans, but recently cut its purchase of U.S. soybeans after the imposition of 100% tariffs on Chinese-made goods on Nov. 1 or sooner. The trade dispute between the two superpowers have been strained since this spring after China did not renew operational permits of U.S. beef processing facilities, which have severely hampered shipments of U.S. beef products into China.
