It's the Ranch It Up Radio Show Herd It Here Weekly Report!  A 3-minute look at cattle markets, reports, news info, or anything that has to do with those of us who live at the end of dirt roads.  Join Jeff 'Tigger' Erhardt, the Boss Lady Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' by subscribing on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 86 DETAILS Agridime Order To Pay Millions In Cattle Ponzi Scheme A Texas federal court has issued a final judgment against Agridime LLC, a Fort Worth-based company, permanently banning it from commodity trading. The ruling also mandates the company to pay more than $102.9 million in restitution to defrauded customers, according to recent court documents. CFTC Alleges $161 Million Cattle Investment Fraud The final judgment stems from a May 2024 complaint filed by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC alleged that Agridime, along with co-founders Joshua Link and Jed Wood, orchestrated a cattle investment scheme that defrauded over 2,000 individuals out of approximately $161 million. According to the CFTC, Agridime falsely marketed cattle investment opportunities by promising annual returns between 15% and 32% on $2,000 cattle purchases. The company allegedly used funds from new customers to pay existing investors, a structure that resembles a classic Ponzi scheme. Insider Commissions and Misuse of Funds Revealed The court filings also revealed that Agridime insiders diverted approximately $11 million in undisclosed commissions. These insider payments were never disclosed to investors, contributing further to the scheme's deception and financial harm to participants. Agridime Settles Case Without Admitting or Denying Allegations Agridime LLC settled the case with the CFTC without admitting or denying the allegations. As part of the settlement, the company agreed to: Permanent injunctive relief Waiver of its right to appeal A permanent ban from commodity trading Prohibition on soliciting investment funds or acting in any CFTC-registered capacity A ban on publicly denying the CFTC's allegations The company must also ensure that all employees and agents comply with the judgment's terms. Agridime Banned from Commodity Markets for Good With the court's final ruling, Agridime is permanently banned from participating in any form of commodity trading. This includes solicitation of funds, registration with the CFTC, and any related investment activity. The CFTC emphasized that the company's future conduct will be closely monitored to ensure compliance. Justin and Bec put on their sombreros, pour margaritas and head South of the border for an exploration of the January 1963 movie soundtrack sessions that gave us the "Fun in Acapulco" album. With its unusual genre stylings that evoked more Latin-flavored stylings, traditional Mexican songs and the whole Acapulco nightclub destination scene of the early 1960s, "Fun in Acapulco" offered Elvis Presley a chance to dabbled in the types of songs he might never have otherwise done but takes the challenge head on, such as "Guadalajara," "Marguerita" and "Vino, Dinero Y Amor." Of course, while they touch on the iconic "Bossa Nova Baby," a cover of a Leiber/Stoller-penned hit originally for The Clovers, and ponder what on earth happened to "Mexico" on the original album, the duo also briefly glimpse the extensive careers of some of the unique musicians who helped Elvis nail the tone (such as The Four Amigos), as well discuss a few ways Fun in Acapulco has popped up in pop culture.  For Song of the Week, Bec takes it light and breezy with the bluesy "Hard Luck" from "Frankie and Johnny" while Justin gives a little love to Lee Hazlewood's "The Fool," originally a hit for Sanford Clark but surfacing both as a home recording by Elvis and eventually on the "Elvis Country" album. Note: We recorded this episode just before the "Sunset Boulevard" box set news dropped, before seeing Riley Keough's "In Process" short film and a few other news tidbits that cropped up, which we'll tackle all on the next episode! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

At just 24, Rebecca Klodinsky turned $2,000 into a global swimwear brand, IIXIIST, worn by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Rihanna, Hailey Bieber. and Kim Kardashian. Built without investors, retail stores, or influencer hype, she proved that smart digital strategy and authentic branding could outperform traditional retail.Nine years later, Rebecca co-founded The Prestwick Place, a modern, ethical fine jewellery brand, alongside her husband, former AFL player Lachie Henderson. Focused on lab-grown diamonds, bespoke craftsmanship, and transparent pricing, the brand has redefined luxury for the next generation, scaling to over $3 million in annual sales with 75% of purchases coming directly from Instagram.Bec likes to solve problems. She couldn't find the bikini she wanted, so she went to Indonesia and found a factory that would make it for her. When she and Lachie started talking about tying the knot in 2020, the more Bec learned about the diamond trade and what a ‘bad investment' mined diamonds were, she learnt all she could about the lab-grown trade. I wanted to hear more from Bec on how she built not one, but two powerhouse brands as well as having two young children and navigating all that entails. If you're into disrupting industries, building high-conversion brands, or redefining what modern luxury looks like, this one's for you. Here's what to inspect and prepare before taking off. Inspect the Core Systems Engine & Transmission: Hire a mechanic to inspect the drivetrain. Leaks, odd noises, or sluggish shifting can spell big trouble. Roof & Seals: Check for soft spots or water damage. Even a pinhole can turn into a pricey repair. Electrical & Plumbing: Test every outlet, light, and water system. A short or leak on the road is no fun. Don't Skip These Pre-Trip Checks Replace tires older than 5-7 years, regardless of tread. Flush and sanitize the freshwater system. Test brakes and lights, including turn signals and trailer hookups. Stock your toolkit: duct tape, fuses, jumper cables, sealant, and extra fluids. Lastly the biggest step before leaving on a long trip, try out the RV or camper close to home on a couple of small trips. This is so important in order to fully understand how all of the equipment works, handles on the road to even parking or leveling. Too often we are overly excited and just want "TO GO"... But that's when disaster or unwanted extra stresses or costs can come into play. So try out that "New To You" RV or Camper and hit the road! But there's one thing your Costco card can't do... and that's get you on a plane. Yep, the TSA has officially shut down the rumor that your warehouse club membership counts as a REAL ID. Despite the shiny star on the card or even a photo on your app, it's not a valid ID for flying. Period. The TSA put it perfectly: “We love hot dogs and rotisserie chickens too… but please stop telling people your Costco card is a REAL ID. It absolutely is not.” Since May 7, you now need a REAL ID, passport, or other federally approved photo ID to fly domestically. Show up with your shopping card? You might miss your flight — and no one wants that. So, pack smart, fly smart… and save the Costco card for the snack aisle, not the security line. Reference: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Boots, Bayous, and Big Gators: A Wild Texas Adventure Wanna walk a mile in your own boots? In Texas, that now includes hunting the leather yourself. Houston-based Republic Boot Company is offering a $5,000 package that comes with a guided East Texas gator hunt — and a pair of custom cowboy boots made from your very own alligator. That price tag also covers your hunting guide, firearms, tags from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and even a head mount of your gator. But you'll need a group of four or more to book the trip — and a little patience. The custom boots take about eight months to make, since tanning gator hide doesn't happen overnight. The hunts are going down this fall near Anahuac — also known as the Alligator Capital of Texas — during the short but wild gator season, September 11th through the 30th. Owner Chris Conrad says while most people associate gator hunting with the “big, gnarly” beasts seen on TV, those larger alligators typically have bigger and rougher scales that aren't ideal for leather working. Eight-foot gators are just right — tough enough for the hunt, but perfect for premium leather. So if you're ready for the full Texas experience — boots, bayou, and big reptiles — this one's for you. Season 5, EPISODE 240 Farmatan Used To Manage Bloat Cattle producers have experienced reductions in bloats and death loss using Farmatan liquid and powder. A peer reviewed study found 81% fewer days of bloat and 17% ADG of heifers grazing winter wheat.  Jeff Bezos Invests Millions to Cut Methane Emissions from Livestock Billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and one of the world's wealthiest individuals with a net worth exceeding $190 billion, is turning his attention to livestock production. Through the Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion climate-focused initiative he launched in 2020, Bezos is investing in projects designed to reduce methane emissions from cattle. Bezos Earth Fund Targets Methane Emissions in Cattle Ranching, farming, and the Western lifestyle are at the heart of everything we do. Tigger & BEC bring you exclusive insights from the world of working ranches, cattle farming, and sustainable beef production. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, according to climate scientists. To address this, Bezos and the Global Methane Hub have jointly launched a $27.4 million initiative aimed at breeding low-methane-emitting cattle and developing technologies to curb livestock emissions globally. This groundbreaking initiative includes: $8.7 million for low-emission dairy breeding in Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Red breeds, led by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. $4.85 million to the Angus Foundation (Saint Joseph, MO) to integrate low-methane traits into beef cattle breeding programs across North America, Oceania, and Europe. $3.35 million to support methane-efficient breeding in Indigenous African cattle populations. $2.34 million to the University of Nebraska to research methane reduction in commercial and crossbred beef cattle herds. $8.1 million toward research at universities in Uruguay and Australia and for rumen microbiome analysis. A Powerful Push to Transform Livestock Emissions Bezos is not working alone. The Global Methane Hub, launched in 2022 in support of the Global Methane Pledge from COP26, brings together powerful partners including the IKEA Foundation, Inter-American Development Bank, and major NGOs. With deep funding and global reach, the coalition is pushing for fast, scalable solutions in agriculture. So, today I'm inviting you to do a gluten free audit with me.Living with coeliac disease isn't a “set and forget” situation. Whether you're newly diagnosed or a seasoned gluten free pro, it's easy to drift into habits that aren't serving you anymore. Taking time to reflect can make a huge difference — not for perfection, but for progress. Here are a few powerful questions we'll explore together:What's going well in your gluten free life?Where are you just getting by?What habits support you?Which ones need a rethink? To help guide this process, I break the audit into five key areas:1. Health Check-UpsWhen was your last coeliac blood test? Are you staying on top of things like iron, B12, and vitamin D levels? If you've been diagnosed, did you get proper follow-up testing? Regular health check-ins keep us informed, empowered, and thriving — not just surviving.2. Dining OutDo you feel confident eating out or does it cause stress? Are you asking the right questions, checking menus properly, and setting boundaries when needed? I'll share some prompts to help you feel more at ease. (And if you haven't yet, check out my chat with Anthony Dionne on how to dine out gluten free — it's full of practical tips.)3. Making Gluten Free Food at HomeAre you stuck in a food rut? Or maybe relying on packaged foods more than you'd like? Let's look at how you can bring more joy and variety back into your gluten free kitchen. Cooking at home should be safe, nourishing — and fun!4. Preparation & PlanningAre you prepared for busy days, travel, or unexpected social events? Planning can make life smoother — whether that's packing safe snacks, prepping meals, or thinking ahead to events. Small changes here can lead to big results.5. Support NetworkWho's in your corner? Living gluten free can feel isolating. Whether it's friends, family, online communities, or professionals, having people who get it makes a real difference. And if you're feeling alone, I want you to know I'm here to support you too.I'll also share my own honest reflections — where I'm doing well and where I still have work to do. Because let's be real: none of us are perfect. That's not the goal. What matters is checking in, adjusting where needed, and giving ourselves the chance to grow.Resources mentioned:

Avian Influenza and what you need to know.  Plus snake bites have been on the rise, what you need to do in case of an emergency and records have been broken in the fishing world. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 240 Avian Influenza:  2 Types Of Viruses  There are two types of virus: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI): Virus strains are extremely infectious, often fatal to domestic poultry and can spread rapidly from flock to flock. Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (LPAI): Virus strains occur naturally in wild migratory waterfowl and shorebirds without causing illness. LPAI can infect domestic poultry with little or no signs of illness. Avian Influenza: The Signs In Birds & Poultry Sudden, unexplained death Decline in water consumption Decreased egg production and depression in layers Purple or dry combs Quieter than normal Frequently laying down Swelling around eyes Procedures For Wild Birds The primary carriers of avian influenza A are waterfowl, gulls, terns and shorebirds. Avoid direct contact with wild birds and observe them only from a distance. Wild birds can be infected without showing symptoms of the infection. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently believes that the public health risk from the current HPAI outbreak is low. They advise avoiding direct contact with sick or dead wild birds. Individuals should also avoid transporting sick or dead birds. Do not handle dead wild birds. Avian influenza surveillance and testing in wild birds is being done by USDA APHIS Wildlife Services and North Dakota Department of Game and Fish. Please report wild sick and dead birds at https://gf.nd.gov/wildlife/diseases/mortality-report. Wild bird avian influenza questions can be directed to 701-204-2161. Reduce the attractiveness for wild birds to stop at your place by cleaning up litter and spilled feed around your domestic poultry housing. When should you move wild bird carcasses? While handling and transporting carcasses is not advised, there may be some cases where it is required to minimize transmission of HPAI and continue normal activities. This would be especially true to limit contact with domestic poultry, or if fields need to be worked in preparation for planting, etc. Handling According to the CDC: “If you must handle wild birds or sick or dead poultry, minimize direct contact by wearing gloves and wash your hands with soap and water after touching birds. If available, wear respiratory protection such as a medical facemask. Change your clothing before contact with healthy domestic poultry and birds after handling wild birds, and discard the gloves and facemask, disinfect footwear, and then wash your hands with soap and water.” Disposal It is critical that carcasses are disposed of properly to reduce the risk for transmission to domestic flocks and other wildlife. Numerous cases of mortality in eagles, hawks and owls have occurred as a result of scavenging on dead bird carcasses. For this reason, moving carcasses to new areas and discarding them on the landscape should be avoided, as this may unintentionally contribute to more cases. Acceptable disposal options for wild bird carcasses include: Move carcasses to the edge of the field. Burial is acceptable for small numbers of birds. Be sure to bury carcasses four feet above the water table with four feet of cover. If possible bury birds in clay soils. Burn carcasses. Be sure to check if you are under a burn ban prior to burning,  Dispose at an approved municipal solid waste landfill. Please contact the landfill to determine disposal protocols. Carcasses must be double bagged. Bags must be disinfected before transporting to the landfill. Be sure to use a disinfect registered for use against AI, https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/antimicrobial-products-registered-disinfection-use-against-avian-influenza Following disposal be sure to disinfect the vehicle used to transport the carcasses. In May, angler Rafal Wlazlo landed a massive 45-pound, 8-ounce Common Carp at Lake Lillinonah, making it the heaviest freshwater fish recorded in the state. According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Wlazlo's catch now holds the official title for the largest freshwater fish in Connecticut history. Wlazlo, owner of Carp Angler, noted that carp fishing is hugely popular in Europe and is gaining traction as a niche yet growing sport in the United States. Prior to this record-breaking carp, the largest freshwater fish on record in Connecticut included a 29-pound Channel Catfish, Lake Trout, and Northern Pike. Justin and Bec give their reactions to watching Disney's live action remake of the 2002 animated classic "Lilo and Stitch," which prominently featured Elvis's music. The remake does, too, so we primarily center our discussion initially around how Elvis is used; but since Bec had never seen the original before, she gave it a watch after having gone to see the reworking in theatres, and the duo compare notes on things that were different, what worked and what didn't. For Song of the Week, since the "Blue Hawaii" album is seen prominently in the new "Lilo and Stitch", both hosts decided to pick songs from the 1961 classic, with Justin first picking "Ku-U-I-Po," the ballad also written by "Can't Help Falling in Love" cowriters Peretti-Creatore-Weiss for "Blue Hawaii." Bec then dives headfirst into the multi-faceted history behind "Aloha Oe," the traditional Hawaiian song penned by the last Queen of Hawai'i, Liliʻuokalani, and its double meaning as both a simple romantic farewell as well as symbolizing the loss of indigenous sovereignty. This prompts further discussion on how the song is used in "Blue Hawaii" and in both versions of "Lilo and Stitch," bringing the whole thing together. Be warned - if you haven't made it out to see the movie, this whole episode contains numerous spoilers for both the 2002 and 2025 versions of "Lilo and Stitch." Bagels are one of the most famous NYC foods and a MUST-have during your time here. Many people argue that New York is the capital of the world for bagels. Why are the bagels so good in NYC?Many people claim that the bagels in NYC are so amazing because the tap water here is considered some of the best in the world. NYC has "soft" water from the Catskill Mountains, meaning it has lower concentrations of calcium and magnesium. The mineral content in water affects the gluten in the dough. Extra hard water strengthens the gluten, which can cause tougher baked goods, meaning softer water yields softer baked goods. Some bagel experts claim the bagels are so good in NYC because of the refined bagel techniques, including longer proofing time and boiling techniques before baking. Either way, the bagels in New York City are truly second to none.Liberty Bagels4 locations in NYC. 5th Ave by the Plaza Hotel/Central Park. Midtown location by Herald Square. Fidi location. Queens location. They offer fun-flavored cream cheeses and always have rainbow bagels (plain flavor with fun colors). It also features seasonal colors, which are a fun addition. We love the BEC, works bagel, and blueberry bagel. Try the cream cheese before you commit to an entire bagel's worth of it. We recommend ordering ahead of time on weekends and holidays. Otherwise, the line takes about 30 minutes on a busy weekend morning.PopUp Bagels6 locations in NYC (some in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island, NY).Ashley's new favorite bagel spot in the city!!They sell the bagels in increments of 3. For example, the smallest order is 3 bagels and 1 schmear, which is great for 2 people and costs $12.The menu is simple and they only have 5 bagel flavors (Plain, Sesame, Everything, Salt, Poppyseed). Then they have plain cream cheese, scallion, seasonal cream cheese, butter, and vegan schmear options. It's the softest and freshest bagels I've ever had, and also the best scallion cream cheese I've ever had.Pick-A-BagelPick a bagel is a solid option, and they have a few locations around the city. We like their bagels with cream cheese and their bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on everything. The ordering process can be a little chaotic, so be prepared for that.Russ & DaughtersSince 1914, this landmark NYC institution has been continuously owned and operated by four generations of the Russ family. A classic bagel establishment serving a variety of bagels, lox, pickles, and desserts. It's been open for more than a century and has 2 locations on the Lower East Side, one in Hudson Yards, and one in Brooklyn.Getting a platter can be fun if you want to sit down and have a true experience with a variety of spreads, breads, and smoked fish. If you want a bagel with lox, plan on it costing around $20. This place has a wide variety of options. You can get a regular bagel and cream cheese or you could buy caviar. I sampled the pastrami-cured smoked salmon, and it was the best of my entire life. Apollo BagelsWe haven't been here, but it is a very popular spot. Every photo, video, and review I've seen looks amazing. Only 3 bagel options (plain, everything, sesame). From what I've heard and seen online, plan on waiting in line for 30 min.General Bagel Tips-Each bagel shop has a different ordering process. Follow what others are doing and you should be fine.-Bagel shops are usually a good place to try a black and white cookie.-If you go to a deli or bodega, you can get a cheaper BEC option that will still be delicious, but it won't be made on a good bagel. -Bagel shop coffee is usually mediocre. It's fine and will do the job, but if you are a coffee connoisseur, be warned. You'll Have to Check It Out - SugarfishFairly priced, delicious omakase sushi. Check it out here.

For Cow Calf Producers, Implants Have A Clear Advantage There's a perception that non-implanted calves garner a higher premium on sale day than their implanted counterparts. However, data consistently shows no difference in sale price between implanted and non-implanted calves. Why Use Ralgro From Merck Animal Health RALGRO® (zeranol implants) increases weaning weight by 23 pounds on average compared to non-implanted calves, according to Merck Animal Health. With results like that, it's easy to see how cattle implants at the cow-calf level can result in a favorable payday. Free Standing Panels Vs. Permanent Fencing Free-Standing Panels Advantages: Portability: Can be moved or reconfigured easily for different livestock, seasons, or operational needs. Ideal for temporary or seasonal use. Quick Setup & Removal: Require no digging or permanent installation—set up in hours instead of days. Versatile Use: Can be used for corrals, sorting pens, alleyways, or even makeshift chutes or holding pens. Minimal Ground Disturbance: No need to dig post holes or pour concrete, preserving soil and reducing site impact. Ideal for Leasing or Shared Land: Can be used on rented property or rotated across pastures. Disadvantages: Less Durable in Harsh Conditions: More likely to shift, tip, or become unstable in high winds or with aggressive animals. Theft or Misplacement: More prone to being stolen or moved if not secured. Higher Long-Term Cost per Use: Although cheaper upfront than heavy-duty permanent structures, replacing or repairing worn panels can add up. Limited Size & Strength: Often not suitable for large or very strong animals unless reinforced or anchored. Permanent Fencing Advantages: Strength & Durability: More secure for large or aggressive livestock. Withstands weather and repeated use better over time. Low Maintenance (Long-Term): When built correctly with quality materials, requires less frequent repair. Increased Property Value: Adds permanent infrastructure, improving land resale or lease value. Security: Less likely to be tampered with, moved, or stolen. Disadvantages: Expensive Upfront: Higher costs for materials, labor, and installation. Inflexible: Cannot be moved or resized without significant effort and cost. Time-Consuming to Install: May take days or weeks to complete, especially for larger corrals or complex layouts. Requires Permanent Land Use Decision: Not ideal for rotational grazing systems or temporary setups. Which One to Choose? Use Free-Standing Panels if: You need flexibility, have limited budget upfront, are leasing land, or run a mobile or multi-site operation. Choose Permanent Fencing if: You want long-term security, own the land, manage large herds, or need infrastructure that stands the test of time. NOTE: SHOW LINKS FOR ALL THE MENTIONED PODCASTERS WILL BE ADDED SOON (AND WILL ALSO BE IN THE NOTES FOR NEXT EPISODE TO ENSURE THEY GET SEEN), FOR NOW GETTING THIS OUT WHILE I CAN! TRANSCRIPT: Good Evening Everyone, Welcome to Popeular History. My name is Gregg, and this is another admin update I'll try to keep from being too boring, in part by offering some observations and speculations about the new Papacy interspersed throughout. First, some personal updates. I was very tired by the end of last week, thank you for asking. I got some rest and then made sure Vice-Pope Mrs. Popeular History's primary Mother's Day present was rest. I am immeasurably grateful for her support, but the reality is even if she weren't so supportive of this passion project of mine and the fairly unhinged extremes I took it to in the last few weeks, I would still be immeasurably grateful to her for a million other things. She's the best partner I could have ever hoped to have for so many reasons, and all of you are welcome to be jealous.   I'd also like to thank my children for being malleable enough that I can pass on my love of the faith in general and also my nerdiness to them. Patrick, Catherine, Joseph, William, Gabriel, I love you all and thank you for sharing me with the internet a bit more lately. I try to shield my children from my more concentrated geekery so they can have somewhat normal childhoods, much like I try to spare my Vice Pope so she can have a somewhat normal marriage, but I will admit I felt a special sense of pride when I heard footsteps after I had invited any of my children interested in appearing on one of my livestreams to come on down to the studio. Those footsteps were from Catherine, who was by that point a good hour and a half into a livestream of the Pope's funeral that had began at 4am our time. To be clear, the kids aren't usually up at that time–I mean, neither am I–but wanting to be on the livestream she had asked to be awakened when it began, so I woke her and set her up with a watching station before kicking things off. Days later, she still excitedly references things from it. Just one of many special times from the last couple weeks. My thanks go not only to my immediate household, but to my family beyond as well, in particular my father, who came over at another particularly uncivil hour and summoned black smoke basically as soon as he arrived so I could go rest, as well as my in-laws, who bore with me through a packed weekend of a wedding and a papal funeral. And again, Vice Pope-Mrs Popeular history through it all.   Thanks are due as well to the lovely and supportive folks at work. I wouldn't want to name anyone who would rather I not name them, so I will be general when I say the atmosphere there has been lovely, and in particular I appreciate those who knew I was their best local source for answers to questions about Popes and Cardinals and conclaves and such. I lead a charmed life these days, and work, from my team to my coworkers to those above me and those supporting me, is full of amazing people I could not appreciate more.   Before I thank even more people, including you the listeners, let's talk about the New Pope, Leo XIV, specifically, his status as an American. And please, I beg you, don't be one of the contrarians who have been trying to make “United Statesian” a thing, it's fine to call Leo XIV the First American Pope. Of course you're welcome to use the opportunity to draw attention to the fact that Pope Francis is also from “the Americas”, but “American” is the demonym for a person from the United States and there is nothing wrong with using that word in that sense, so stop trying to make fetch happen.   Anyways, Pope Leo was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. The date is memorable for Catholics as the Triumph of the Cross, one of the more venerable feasts of the Church, commemorating Emperor Constantine's mother Saint Helena's apparently successful expedition to the Holy Land in search of the Cross Christ was crucified on, AKA the True Cross. Of course, many of my listeners are more captivated by the Chicago aspect, so let's hone in on that. First, to get this out of the way, yes, he was raised in Dolton, a community just *outside* Chicago, but contrarians should brace for more disappointment as it remains technically correct to describe Robert Francis Prevost as being “from Chicago”, having been born at Mercy Hospital in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the south side.   In a way, it would be somewhat surprising if Pope Leo *weren't* from the midwest, considering 80% of the 10 American Cardinals who participated in the conclave are midwesterners by birth. But also that number should actually closer to 90%, considering that's including the Irish-born Kevin Cardinal Farrell under the American tally, and by that logic the future Leo XIV should probably count as Peruvian. But I'm not gonna begrudge anyone who wants to claim the Pope as one of their own. Even without that wrinkle, I think we can agree Ireland can count as the midwest, especially given the whole Notre Dame thing.   If it were tallied as its own nationality, the Midwestern United States would be the second most represented county in the conclave, still actually in the same place that the United States currently occupies: comfortably behind Italy, and a bit ahead of Brazil.   Nor of course is Chicago unfamiliar to Cardinals in general, having had their senior cleric sporting a red hat–or getting one at the first opportunity–for  over a hundred years running, putting them in extremely rarified air, actually I think they're the only US see that can claim the red hat century club when it's set on hard mode like that, as New York's Cardinal Dolan wasn't elevated at the first opportunity, presumably because Cardinal Egan was still kicking around and Conclave-eligible for a while, and Archbishop Henning of Boston just got passed over last December despite Cardinal O'Malley having freshly aged out.   And my midwest Catholic trivia dump can't be complete without noting that spookily, Mar Awa III, the current Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, which shares the spotlight on my upcoming 0.22 supplemental, was also born in Chicago, which may further help the ecumenical relations I discuss in that supplemental episode. Here's hoping!   One more topic relating to Pope Leo's roots I want to touch on today: His Louisiana creole and black caribbean heritage. Both of His Holiness' grandparents on his mother's side were described as black or mulatto in census documents of their day, with his mother's father, Joseph Martinez, being listed as born in Santo Domingo, now the capital of the Dominican Republic, though it was then part of Haiti, the only country to have been born as the result of a successful slave rebellion, making black heritage from that region particularly poignant.   I'll note that His Holiness' melanin levels are such that he can fairly be described as white passing, and I'd consider it unlikely that the matter was discussed during the recent conclave, though I expect then-Cardinal Prevost was aware of this bit of family history. That said, it's certainly *possible* that it was a surprise even to him. One way or another, the basic fact is that these genealogical records exist. What to make of them, I leave to those more competent than I. I will commit to circling back to the topic in time, though. For now, it's time to thank, like, a lot of podcasters.   First and foremost, you probably wouldn't be listening to this if it weren't for Bry and Fry of Pontifacts. Their support has been critical in a number of ways and I could not be more appreciative of the way they've shared their platform with me, and so much more, right down to Bry making sure I checked my email when she saw that NPR had reached out for an interview. I tragically did not have Bry's attentive support on the inbox situation when PBS invited me on solo, so that one will always be a bit of a what-if, a hint of how much harder things are without the active support of so many. So again, thank you all, especially people I'm sure I'm forgetting since I'm extremely forgetful.   I think the safest thing to do is to thank the rest of the podcasters who have collaborated with me in order of appearance this year, starting back in February with the Intelligent Speech crew, in particular my fellows on the religion panel discussion, namely Trevor Cully of the History of Persia Podcast as well as the cheekier America's Secret Wars podcast, Aurora of the Swords, Sorcery, and Socialism podcast, and Bailey of Totalus Jeffianus. What a panel we had. And oh, by the way, apparently I've got the green light to share both that and my talk on the Original Grey Eminence, François Leclerc du Tremblay on this feed, so watch out for that in due course. Oh, and uh, shoutout to David Montgomery of The Siecle for his help with French pronunciation this year, not to mention various other assists through the years. All errors are my own, and David is a good guy to know.   Thank you to Jerry of The Presidencies podcast for having me on for one of his intro quotes, his process is impeccably professional just as one would expect after having listened to his show, and it was a great honor to take part.   Thank you as well to Thomas Rillstone of the History of Aotearoa New Zealand podcast for picking a surprisingly fascinating year to solicit info about, even if your release timing was ultimately made awkward by the death of the Holy Father. Oh, I suppose I can release that for you guys as well, though really, go check out his lovely show. Aotearoa is spelled: A-O-T-E-A-R-O-A   Moving on to my guests from the recent sede vacante, the first you all heard was Umberto from the So You Think You Can Rule Persia podcast, who, in addition to offering a fascinating overview of the history of transitions among the Islamic Caliphate also it turns out had the extremely clutch ability to offer live translations of Italian, which put our humble livestream ahead of EWTN, no offense to that major network.   The following day this feed was graced by the previously mentioned Aurora, now on as half of Tsar Power, along with Roberto, who is also from The History of Saqartvelo Georgia and Quest For Power. I'll let you sort all that out from the links in the show notes, but it's worth noting that you can expect more collaboration with Roberto on this feed, starting in the not too distant future with a conversation we unwittingly recorded just hours before Pope Francis' passing, talking optimistically about the future prospects of his papacy. Fortunately there's still cause for such optimism: Habemus Papam, after all.   Right before the conclave began, I put out a Cardinal Numbers First Judgment segment with John from Prim e Time, though admittedly that episode was originally recorded over a year ago. We did have a fresher appearance from John on the Youtube side of things, as he joined us to meet the new Pope after the white smoke, having cunningly signed up for the correct smokewatch to do so, much like Umberto our live translator. Ethan from Play History on Youtube was also kind enough to join us, helping hold down the fort along with Fry while I juggled toddlers and the white smoke first billowed out. Memorable times, all.   A special thank you to all those who shared the episode I had already prepared on Cardinal Prevost with the wider world, leading to thousands of exposures and hundreds of new listeners. Which, welcome if you're one of the new listeners. Thank you for tuning in, and I promise I'll update my Episode 0 soon to help you find your way.   Ok, it's time for another bout of new Pope stuff before I fill you all in on what to expect from me moving forward. I think it's appropriate that we take a look at what Pope Leo himself has outlined as important topics and themes here at the start of his papacy.   First, peace, which was literally the first word of Leo's papacy. An emphasis on peace is no surprise, for one thing, as the newly-elected Pope Leo himself pointed out, his greeting of peace was in the tradition of the resurrected Christ Himself, and thereby an appropriate greeting for the Easter season, which Pope Francis had opened right before his death and through which Pope Leo will continue to guide the Church until Pentecost on June 8th.   The topic of peace is even less surprising in light of the rare public message from the College of Cardinals that was released just before the Conclave, pleading for peace amid escalating war. In light of that, it would have been surprising if he *hadn't* come out advocating for peace. As is, it's definitely a core message, and needless to say a timely one too, with Pope Leo already echoing the late Pope Francis' observation that World War III is already being fought piecemeal.    The appeal for peace does seem to be getting a bit of traction, with India and Pakistan agreeing to a ceasefire, and the Trump administration proposing the Vatican as a mediator in the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine. If you don't look in the box marked Gaza or consider the actual likelihood of a breakthrough in Ukraine, you might be tempted to feel hopeful: admittedly as you can probably tell I'm more on the skeptical end myself, though I'd be happy to be wrong.   Another topic Pope Leo emphasized in his first speech–and repeatedly since–is togetherness, which could also be filed under dialog or even unity: the interplay between commonality and difference is critical here, and the most consistent analogy is one very suitable to his role as Pope, that of a bridge-builder, a pontifex in Latin, a traditional title of Popes for centuries, though probably not one that really traces back to the ancient Roman priestly title of Pontifex Maximus directly, as it seems to have been primarily added to the Pope's titles during the renaissance, when the classical world was very fashionable. Now, to really tie the old and the new together, I can tell you that a title once held by Julius Caesar is Pope Leo's handle on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter: @Pontifex.   When it comes to the Papacy, concepts like building bridges and promoting togetherness play out on multiple levels. First, as pastor of the giant flock known as Catholicism, we can talk about healing divisions within the church. Then, we can talk about healing divisions among all of Christianity, since the Pope is the head of the largest Christian group–and frankly it's always worth noting that most Christians are Catholics. But really, getting arrogant about it isn't the way to bring people on board, and from what I can tell so far Leo seems to have taken that lesson from Francis to heart–not that humility is a novel lesson in the history of the Papacy that Francis just invented, but still, give the guy his due..   Lastly, though certainly not leastly, what about healing divisions all over the world, not just among all Christians or even among all religions, but among all people? We're talking about the Vicar of Christ here, the idea of “not my circus, not my monkies” does not apply, and the more divisions across humanity are healed, the more likely we are to see enduring peace. So, Pope Leo has his work cut out for him, indeed I daresay we all do, as I am going to charitably assume you all want to make the world a better place.   Another priority of the new Pontiff is one that came to light even before his first speech: Vatican-watchers know that modern Popes don't just pick names at random, for example Pope Francis was strongly broadcasting that he was going to do something different by being the first  in the modern era to choose a truly new Papal name. As for Pope Leo, my first impression was quickly confirmed, as Pope Leo XIII looms large in modern Catholic history and his encyclical Rerum Novarum was a watershed moment in the development of modern Catholic Social Teaching, which is a foundational enough topic that I capitalized all those words and you will absolutely catch folks calling Catholic Social Teaching “CST” for short. Before Pope Francis, when you were talking about social justice in a Catholic context–which, by the way, is the context where the idea first gained traction, being popularized among the Jesuits in the early 19th century–anyways before Pope Francis, when you were talking about social justice in a Catholic context, you were talking about Pope Leo and Rerum Novarum, published in 1891 as a critique of modern economic systems from Capitalism to Communism and all over, emphasizing the fundamental importance of worker's rights given, well, the fundamental importance of workers themselves, as human beings with divine dignity. The Church has been revisiting Rerum Novarum on a regular basis ever since, and Pope Leo has explicitly centered it for those wondering what to expect from his papacy. To borrow the language of a generation slightly ahead of me, it's based, so get hype.   Of course lots of people are wondering what Pope Leo will get up to beyond these key starts of peace, unity, and social justice in the mold of so many of his predecessors. We can be here all day and I still won't be able to comment on every individual topic, nor will h e. We'll see more of Pope Leo in the years to come. Of course we can look to his past comments on anything you like, but the basic reality is Robert Francis Prevost is dead, and  Pope Leo XIV is a different man. At least, he may be, anyhow. History has shown election to the Papacy can change folks, but it's also shown that that's not always the case. Sorry to disappoint those looking for surefire answers, we'll find out together in the coming years and quite possibly decades, as, at 69, Pope Leo will likely be with us for a generation.   BUT, and this is a big but, I do think from what he's indicated so far and from the apparent expectations of the Cardinals who elected him, not to mention historical patterns, I do think it's very likely that Pope Leo will, on the whole, prove to be something of a centrist. That's not to say that he'll be middle-of-the-road on all issues–I really do expect him to lean into the Leonine legacy of Rerum Novarum-style social and economic justice with a major encyclical on the topic within the next few years–but on average I do not expect him to be as progressive as Pope Francis or as conservative as Pope Benedict. Again, how exactly that all will shake out remains to be seen, and I am very bad at making predictions anyways. After all, when I got asked directly about the possibility of an American Pope, I gave a simple “no” and moved on. In my defense, apparently the future Pope Leo did the same, allegedly telling his brother “they're not going to pick an American Pope” on the eve of the conclave that did just that.   Now I want to take a moment to thank some non-podcasters who have been very supportive of my work the last few years, specifically the priests at my home parish of Saint Francis de Sales. Shoutout Fr. Mike, Fr. PC, and Fr. Sizemore, who have all supported me in various ways both in relation to the podcast and off-mic. In particular I want to thank Fr. PC for helping review my upcoming worldbuilding episodes on mass and the Eucharist to make sure I didn't go too far off the rails, and Fr. Sizemore for his consistent support and encouragement of my work, as well as his willingness to promote it. Longtime listeners know that I am willing to set aside the Pope-colored glasses to offer necessary critiques of the Church at times–indeed, necessary critiques are actually themselves part of Pope-colored glasses anyways. It's been very cool to have that support even when offering that criticism at times, and I am, of course, grateful.   To give a little more personal insight, I think it's worth noting that I'm bringing Fr Sizemore and Fr PC up in part because they're on my mind and in my prayers a little extra these days since they are going to another parish as part of the normal juggling that occurs with basically any diocese. Back in the day such moves were less common, and could indeed be signs of darker things, but more recent practice has keeping priests from staying at a particular parish for too extended a period as a guard against exactly such dark things as may occur when a pastor is seen as the absolute bedrock of a faith community and is effectively given all sorts of extra deference and leeway and such to an inappropriate degree. In the end, Christ is the foundation, it's not about any particular pastor. Nevertheless, I will miss Fr Sizemore deeply, as excited as I am to see what he does at his new parish, and as excited as I am to meet our new pastor, Father Tom Gardner, and the other priest and a half that are coming to Saint Francis as part of the general shuffle. Interestingly, this will have our household lined up with a relatively young priest, a relatively young bishop, and a relatively young Pope, so these positions are likely going to be set in my life for a while yet.   And now that we've talked a bit about the future of my home parish, let's talk about the future of Popeular History.   First, as you've already seen if you're caught up on the feed, I have some content from Conclave Time still being edited and prepared for release on this feed. In the last week or so you've seen my chat with Benjamin Jacobs of Wittenberg to Westphalia and Why Tho?, who had me on as his guest of his 100th episode for the former. He's more like me than most, so if you enjoy this, go check him out. And if you don't enjoy this, well, I'm confused as to the sequence of events that has you somehow still listening, but even then, you should *also* still go  check him out. Just in case. You never know.   Also already released is a chat with Meredith of The Alexander Standard, another Rexypod in the mold of Cardinal Numbers and of course Pontifacts, reviewing, rating, and ranking all the successors of Alexander the Great from Perdiccas to Cleopatra VII. Meredith bravely volunteered to take the first spot on what was a near nightly guest list during the recent sede vacante, and we had a great chat that you should go check out if you haven't already.   Still to come most likely this month is a very extended conversation I had with Steve Guerra of the History of the Papacy Podcast, a collaboration that was pretty long overdue. I first reached out to Steve over five years ago when Popeular History was just starting out, but I was too timid to propose a collaboration at the time. I was actually still too timid to suggest such a thing when Pope Francis' fading health got us talking again earlier this year, but fortunately for all of us Steve had no such scruples and when he suggested we get together over a couple of mics, well, so far we've got hours of good stuff that will be ready for your ears very shortly, I just wanted to get all this admin stuff and early Leo discussion out first so I did. But you can expect hours of Steve and I on this feed soon, and if you just can't wait–don't! Bec ause it's already out on his feed at the History of the Papacy Podcast. Part III talking Leo specifically is already in the works, with hopefully more to come from Steve and I collaborating in the years to come.   After that, you'll hear a chat I had with Quinn from Nobelesse Oblige, one half of another rexypod that ranks all the nobel laureates from 1901 until he and cohost Maggie run out of people. Their show was on hiatus, but is back now, so rejoice! All the best shows go on hiatus, like, a lot, amirite? Look, subscribe and you'll know when any shows with that particular habit get back. Anyways, that's gonna be another conclave second helping episode.   The third on the conclave second helping trilogy, likely appearing early next month at this rate with apologies to my patient guest, will be a great chat I had right before the doors were sealed with none other than Garry Stevens of the History in the Bible podcast, in which I fielded his conclave questions and talked about the recent movie as well. Thank you as always, Garry, especially for your patience as I edited my way through our chat!   After that puts a cap on my conclave coverage, it'll be high time to release the previously mentioned chat I had with Roberto of Tsar Power and more, right before Pope Francis passed.   And there you go, that's the plan for the next month or so. After all that, it'll be 5th anniversary time, and I think it'll be fun to do a bit of Q&A for that. The anniversary will officially on June 29th, so let's go ahead and say send in almost any question you like to popeularhistory@gmail.com by June 20th and I'll answer it for you on the show. The only limit I'm placing is that the question should be relatively family-friendly so I don't get flagged as explicit content by the powers that be.    After that, well, we'll see. Popeular History and Cardinal Numbers will be carrying on, I'm looking forward to finishing my longrunning Catholic worldbuilding series, as well as covering all the living Cardinals I haven't gotten to yet. And those items just represent finishing up the current stages. Plus, tere's gonna be more Pontifacts collaboration, including the much hyped Habemus Pointsam project, ranking all the Papal transitions with Bry! But do  keep in mind I had *just* put out a note indicating that I was going to stay on hiatus for a while longer right before all this happened, and the factors that lead me to that are still present. I've got a strong head of steam for when I'm officially back up to full production, but until then, you won't hear from me quite as regularly as I'd like. Actually, let's be honest, you're never going to hear from me as regularly as I'd like unless there's a wealthy patron who wants to hand over a living wage for myself and my family as compensation for me doing this full-time. And nah, I'm not counting on that. I do have a patreon though, so if you want to help offset my costs and fuel Taco Bell expeditions or moving to Rome, you know, little things like that, you can. Mary specifically said I can get Taco Bell every time I get a new patron, so thank you very much in advance. Also, a big thank you to Joe, my current patron, who hosts Prime Factors with his son Abram, and yes that's another Rexypod, in fact, yes, that's another Rexypod ranking the British Prime Ministers! Prime Time is the other one in case you've already forgotten, and now you can easily find both of them on one another's feeds as they recently did a collaborative special you should absolutely check out! I especially owe Joe as I forgot to keep mentioning him when speeding through my recent sede vacante coverage, a situation which will be remedied hopefully in small part by this note, and then eventually with judicious editing. Thanks again for your support, Joe!   If you'd like to support my work and are financially able to do so, go to Patreon.com/popeular. I'm going to do as much as I can even without many patrons, but more patron support  would go a long way to making things easier, I have to admit. So if you want to join Joe on the wall of ongoing thanks, there are still spots left! And if you can't support financially, no sweat, do what you gotta do, but please consider spreading the word about Popeular History and keeping me and my family in prayer while you're at it. Words of encouragement or any other words you'd like to send can be sent to popeularhistory@gmail.com or you can also find me on social media in a few spots, primarily on Bluesky these days at Popeular as I'm focusing more on direct content creation rather than trying to keep up with socials and the website and such. Oh, speaking of the website, Google Domains went caput so the website's kind of frozen, not that I was updating it much anyways apart from the automatic RSS feeds, which for what it's worth are still chugging along. But the rest you can ignore, in particular the big daily show announcement that's still up there, because that was fun while it lasted but that is definitely on the list of things that are not happening unless I get thousands of patreon dollars a month to make this a full-time job, which, again, I am realistic enough to not expect. It just turns out I can't take that notification down without tanking the whole site at the moment, or without, you know, a fair amount of extra work, and since the RSS feeds are still handy and my time is still fairly crunched, I'm reluctant to do that. So, uh, here we are. Awkward. Ignore the big daily show announcement. Thank you.   Now, I'm going to make a couple specific predictions about the future of Leo's papacy that I'd be happy to be wrong about. But before I do *that*, I want to note that after today, apart from the contemporary cardinals episodes, I plan to get back to history, leaving current events to other commentators generally, with the exception of a plan to have some commentary on contemporary news, Catholic and otherwise, available as bonus content for my Patreon subscribers. That would allow my regular listeners to have access to all the historical goodies I find without barrier, while still offering something interesting and informative, you know, hopefully, for my backers. If you hate the idea, let me know, and of course if you love the idea, sure, let me know that too. I'm thinking maybe some kind of monthly roundup, something like that.   Anyways, on to those predictions. First, while I genuinely believe we would have seen Sister Rafaella Petrini elevated to the College of Cardinals had Pope Francis lived to create another batch of Cardinals, I do not see that happening under Pope Leo, though he did reconfirm her in her role as President of the Governorate of Vatican City State as part of his general “as you were” instructions right after his election, reconfirming all of Pope Francis' appointments in one of the more unambiguous signs of continuity you can have. It's of course likely that there will be shuffling in time, but I think Petrini is safe in her role, I just don't expect her to be the first Cardinelle at the next opportunity, as Leo appears interested in a degree of centrist rapprochement.   Similarly, while I had fairly big hopes for the observances of the 1700th anniversary of Nicea that were due this month, namely a reunified dating of Easter, obviously those observances aren't happening right now. And, while it look like there are now plans for later this year, around the Feast of Saint Andrew–November 30th–I think that moment has passed, and I expect it's not something we'll see in year one of a Papacy. Again, I'd be happy to be wrong, but I don't think that's a “coming super  soon” type situation at this point. And that's it for today, thanks for sitting through a record-breaking amount of admin. Thanks, Joe!

Flying to Canada? Essential Travel Tips & Customs Info

Traveling to Canada? Know what to pack, what to declare, and what to expect at customs. Smart travel starts here! What to Know Before Flying to Canada Traveling internationally—especially to Canada—requires a bit more preparation than domestic trips. Whether it's your first time or you're a seasoned traveler, here's what you should know before you board. Entry Requirements and Canadian Customs Tips Valid Passport: Make sure your passport is current and valid for the entire duration of your stay. U.S. travelers don't need a visa for visits under six months. ArriveCAN App: Travelers are encouraged to use the ArriveCAN app to provide customs and immigration information ahead of time. What to Declare: Be honest—declare all food, alcohol, and goods. Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) takes violations seriously. Duties and Limits: Know your duty-free allowances. Canadians returning home have specific exemptions for goods and alcohol, which vary by time spent abroad. What to Pack for a Smooth Trip Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Canada's weather can vary dramatically. Layers are key! Travel Documents: Keep your passport, boarding pass, and ArriveCAN receipt handy with an electronic copy on your phone. Remember to file your “Customs Declaration” within 72 hours of departure on airlines for faster customs processing. Electronics & Adapters: Canada uses 120V (same as the U.S.), so most electronics are compatible. Health & Insurance Info: It's smart to travel with proof of insurance and any necessary prescriptions. It is highly recommended that prescriptions are in original bottles from the pharmacy. If those bottles are large, advise the pharmacy of international travel and ask for smaller labelled bottles with enough for the “planned” trip as well as an extra week's supply incase of an emergency. Stay Connected on the Go Cellular Carrier: When flying internationally even if just over the border it is extremely important to contact your cell phone carrier (Example: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint) to verify if your plan covers all of the countries that will be visited. Roaming fees are expensive. If your plan does NOT cover, for example Canada, ask for a “Travel Pass” to be added to your cell phone or data plan which are typically significantly cheaper than roaming fees. Consider a Canadian SIM card or an international roaming plan to stay in touch during your trip.  Wi-Fi & Internet: Free Wi-Fi is common in airports, cafes, and hotels, but rural areas may have limited service. To avoid “Roaming Charges” always place the phone on “Airplane Mode”, connect to the available Wi-Fi, and change the final setting to enable “Wi-Fi Calling.” No Roaming Fees: To be absolutely sure that you are not on roaming data, after putting phone / tablet on “Airplane Mode” with “Wi-Fi” connect. Consider using apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Facetime or Google Meet to stay connected with others. OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! Episode 82 Oklahoma joins the list of states to enact meat labeling laws.  Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt last week signed into law a measure requiring manufactured protein products to be labeled differently from meat. House Bill 1126 requires food manufacturers, distributors and retailers to clearly disclose that cell-cultivated or cultured products or those that come from a lab, plants or insect proteins are not meat. Those convicted of false advertising could face a misdemeanor. The law places the burden of proof on the manufacturer and not the retailer. Oklahoma's Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry would be responsible for investigating complaints that food products are falsely advertised or misbranded as meat products. The act takes effect Nov. 1. Several U.S. states have enacted or proposed laws regulating the labeling of meat and alternative protein products, particularly focusing on plant-based and cell-cultured (lab-grown) meats. These laws aim to ensure transparency for consumers and protect traditional meat industries.AP News+7The Guardian+7National Agricultural Law Center+7 States with Enacted Meat Labeling Laws Missouri: In 2018, Missouri became the first state to pass a law prohibiting misrepresentation of products as meat if they are not derived from harvested livestock or poultry. Big Rapids Pioneer Nebraska: Governor Jim Pillen proposed a ban on lab-grown meat, facing pushback from ranchers and farm groups who prefer clear labeling over outright bans. AP News Arizona and Tennessee: Considered legislation to ban cell-cultured meat; however, the bills did not pass in the 2024 legislative sessions. Penn State Agricultural Law Center+2National Agricultural Law Center+2Houston Chronicle+2 Federal Regulations At the federal level, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversees meat labeling through the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). In March 2024, the USDA finalized a rule allowing the voluntary use of "Product of USA" or "Made in the USA" labels on meat, poultry, and egg products only when they are derived from animals born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States. USDA Summary The landscape of meat labeling laws in the U.S. is evolving, with several states enacting or proposing legislation to regulate the labeling of alternative meat products. These laws vary in scope, with some focusing on prohibiting specific terminology and others imposing outright bans on certain products. The federal government also plays a role in standardizing labeling practices to ensure consumer transparency. U.S.–China Trade War Eases with Major Tariff Reductions on Meat Exports In a significant development for U.S. agriculture, the ongoing U.S.–China trade war eased this week following a new 90-day tariff reduction agreement. The deal brings temporary relief to U.S. meat exporters who have faced steep trade barriers in the Chinese market. Under the agreement, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, including meat, will fall from 125% to 10%. The reductions officially took effect on Wednesday, May 14th, signaling progress as both nations continue trade negotiations. China, the world's largest beef importer, remains a critical market for U.S. meat. In 2024 alone, U.S. exports to China included nearly $1.6 billion in beef, $1.1 billion in pork, and $490 million in poultry meat and products. This temporary tariff relief offers a much-needed boost to American meat producers and exporters while long-term trade talks continue. REFERENCE: https://www.meatingplace.com/Industry/News/Details/119098 USDA Closes U.S. Border to Livestock Imports Amid Northward Spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has once again closed the southern border to live cattle, horses, and bison imports due to the ongoing detection and rapid spread of New World Screwworm or NWS,  in southern Mexico. This latest decision follows continued reports of the parasite advancing further north than previously observed—up to 700 miles from the U.S. border. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the immediate suspension of livestock imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border. This action comes after the border had temporarily reopened in early February following enhanced inspections and biosecurity protocols. The border was initially closed in November of the previous year due to similar concerns. The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) poses a significant threat to livestock health and U.S. agriculture. Though eradicated from the United States in 1966, NWS has reemerged in remote areas of southern Mexico, including on farms with limited cattle movement. The pest's resurgence is being treated with high urgency by both U.S. and Mexican officials. To combat the spread, USDA-APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) is working closely with Mexican authorities to increase the release of sterile screwworm flies, the primary method for controlling the pest. This sterile fly technique had successfully helped maintain a barrier zone in southern Mexico and later extended into Panama, serving as a buffer for decades. However, over the past two years, the screwworm has advanced through Central America and back into Mexico, creating an escalating threat to U.S. livestock industries. USDA-APHIS and Mexican counterparts will continue aggressive surveillance, monitoring, and mitigation efforts to stop the spread. The border will remain closed until USDA determines that the risk has been sufficiently mitigated and disease metrics improve.  The decision to suspend cattle imports from Mexico   has led to a downward revision in projected U.S. beef production for 2025 and 2026, according to the agency's latest WAZ-de Report, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. The report cites tighter cattle supplies and reduced slaughter volumes tied to the import halt as key drivers behind the lower forecasts. Beef exports are also forecast lower as limited domestic supplies are expected to reduce U.S. competitiveness abroad. Season Simply but Generously Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are enough Use rubs for roasts and brisket — let them sit 1+ hour before cooking 4. Let It Rest Before removing from heat, add a pat of butter to melt on the steak during the resting stage. Always let beef rest 5–10 minutes after grilling to lock in juices 5. Invest in a Meat Thermometer Ideal internal temps: Burgers: 160°F (medium) Steaks: 130°F (medium rare), 145°F (medium) Brisket: 195°F–205°F for perfect pull-apart texture OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! Trade Wars Cease As U.S. Beef Exports Resume The ongoing U.S.–China trade war eased this week following a new 90-day tariff reduction agreement.    Under the agreement, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, including meat, will fall from 125% to 10%. The reductions officially took effect on Wednesday, May 14th.   In addition, the U.S. and United Kingdom governments announced an “agreement in principle” Thursday for a trade deal that promises to lift beef exports.   The outline includes cuts to recently hiked U.S. tariffs on British cars, steel and aluminum, while the U.K. would slash tariffs on 2,500 U.S. products to a reported average tariff rate 1.8%.  On the beef side, sales to the U.K. were worth $32 million last year.   Agriculture Secretary Brooke called the announcement “a historic deal with the UK that secures increased access for American agricultural products, including unprecedented access for American beef and ethanol. This episdoe of Wisdom from the Wardrobe, the style squad trades closet space for living space and dives into Spring/Summer 2025 home décor trends with a healthy dose of color confusion and couch commentary. In the “In the News” segment, Bec bends our brains with the story of Olo—a brand-new, never-before-seen color discovered by scientists at UC Berkeley. Imagine a teal so saturated it doesn't actually exist... unless lasers are involved. (It's basically Schrödinger's color, and we are living for it.) Then, the team swaps fashion for furniture, revealing if their homes match their personal style and what design trends are making waves. From color drenching and eco-friendly design (hello, vegan leather) to vintage vibes with a modern twist and indoor-outdoor flow, the crew dishes on creating a stylish space that feels like home, or a wellness retreat.  So, whether you're reimagining your living room or just trying to figure out what Olo feels like, this episode is your playful peek into how personal style translates from wardrobe to wall paint and beyond. Happy Styling!

On this episode of Next Level CRE, Matt Faircloth interviews Neal Bawa, known as the “mad scientist of multifamily,” live from Best Ever Conference. They dive into Neal's preparation for the BEC real estate debate on whether the Fed has stuck a soft landing, highlighting key data points like wage growth outpacing rent growth and the Fed's dual tools for market intervention. Neal also shares his actual market outlook—separating his debate stance from his real views—stating he is bullish on rent growth but cautious on cap rates and interest rates due to fiscal pressures. He ends with a tactical nugget: target markets like Indianapolis with strong rent growth, low property taxes, and limited new supply.
