[CN/TW: sexual assault and rape] Melissa Browne is an author, financial advisor, speaker and financial wellness advocate who first joined me on the podcast way back in episode 18 in early 2017. And now she’s back with a vulnerable new book and for a very personal and brave conversation. Mel has just published a new book - her fourth book - called “Budgets Don’t Work (But This Does)”. It’s the culmination of her career first as an accountant and now a financial advisor.  Her philosophy; just like diets and one-size-fits-all eating plans or training programs don’t work, budgets don’t work either. So Mel has developed a process that helps you custom design a financial plan, habits and tactics that draw on your natural strengths (while minimising the impact of your weakness). Simply genius! What makes this book so powerful is Mel’s vulnerability around her history, her story and how it has shaped her financial decision making over the years. From the outside looking in, Mel appeared to have it all. Yet as she reveals in this conversation, for years Mel was stuck in a ‘sabotage loop’ in her business and that she carried a victim mentality and story that she wasn’t “good enough” that caused her to work so hard she ultimately experienced burnout and a breakdown in 2017. So she initially started working with a coach to help her navigate her ’sabotage loop’ in her business. But she quickly realised she would also need to unpack the trauma she’s experienced and the way it and the stories she’s carried with her have shaped her personal life as well.  This is Mel reclaiming her story, finding her voice & rewriting a new ending for her story Get the full show notes for the episode here. — Visit the Sparta Chicks Radio website here  Follow Sparta Chicks Radio on Facebook: facebook.com/SpartaChicks  Follow Mel on Instagram: @moremoneyforshoes

Melissa Browne first joined me on the podcast way back in early 2017 and then spoke at our conference, Sparta Chicks Unleashed, in 2018. So Mel has developed a process that helps you discover (what she calls) your “Financial Phenotype”. It’s the combination of your Money Stories, your Money Environment and your Money Type. Knowing these things about yourself then allows you to custom design your own financial plan, habits and tactics that draw on your natural strengths (while minimising the impact of your weakness). Simply genius! What makes this book so powerful is Mel’s vulnerability around her history and her story and how it has shaped her financial decision making over the years. However, Mel quickly realised she would also need to unpack the trauma she’s experienced and the way it and the stories she’s carried with her have shaped her personal life as well. There’s nothing quite like watching an actor pretend to lose their mind on screen. Especially when they’re the kind of person who already comes across as unhinged. That’s why we jointly reviewed The Beaver[2011]. Mel Gibson plays the head of a small toy company inherited from his father that’s not doing too well. He has a bad relationship with his kids. His wife, played by Jodie Foster, wants a divorce. So Mel goes to a motel to drink heavily and attempt to kill himself. This fails when the beaver puppet he found in a dumpster tells him to knock it off and put himself back together. The Beaver(2011), Mel Gibson doing … Continue reading Popcorn Pulse 105: Meaver →

Can I take a moment to plug our retreat with the #AmWriting podcast ladies? Its called the Find Your Book, Find Your Mojo retreat. It was KJ’s idea, really, so we should give her the credit. But I’ve been working hard on all the details to make it an unforgettable weekend of friendship and writing and laughter. Our dearest hope is that you’ll come with your writing buddy or your writing group and learn how you can use Jennie’s Two-Tier Outline to help you move your writing forward. The Two-Tier can be used at any point. Really. Any point. (I should know, I refer to and rewrite mine all the time.) It’s small and powerful and social, and we will show you how to use it by yourself and with your writing group to help each other move forward.I’m bringing my friends. Join us and bring yours! You can find out more details here: https://www.authoraccelerator.com/amwritingretreatWe are gearing up for Season TWO of Mom Writes. It’s all about REVISION! And to kick things off, Jennie is going to give a webinar about the Stoplight Method. It’s part of her revision process, and it helps you identify how best to use your time when tackling your revision. If you would like to sign up for the webinar, you can do so here: https://www.authoraccelerator.com/momwriteskickoffShow notes for the encore episode 59: Just Blow Something Up[NSFK—the end of this episode is Not Suitable for Kids. Abby swears and we don’t edit it out, plus we mention dildos about 16 times, so put on your headphones as we enter chit chat territory at the end!]Both Mel and Abby are sick. But Mel wins. She has the flu and shows up anyway because she is convinced that part of her self-care is talking about her edits. She tried extra hard this week to make up for her “bad edits” last time.Jennie’s comments last time were along the lines of “but nothing is happening in the story.” So Mel’s solution was to go back and blow something up.Jennie points out how dangerous it is to “blow stuff up” in a story. You can very easily make it about plot and not story. Mel’s story is about life and death and the choices we make around life and death. Mel’s writing played into that, so it works. But Jennie cautions writers not to just randomly include epic events in their stories if they don’t serve a purpose in the overarching WHY. If your motivation is “I just gotta make something happen” then that’s bad. There needs to be a logic to every single action a character makes. It has to be logical in the universe of the story, and it has to be logical to who that character is. (Would that character actually do that? Why would they do that? And is it clear to the audience why they would do that?)Mel beat herself up over her previous edits, but we talk about writers’ high standards for themselves. Why do writers think it has to be perfect the first time they write something? Mel points out that first-time writers hold themselves to that standard of perfection because they have been raised on a million wonderful books in their final form and have yet to develop an appreciation for the iterative process of writing.Jennie says no one is immune from this, and that the people who are willing to put themselves in the vulnerable place of sharing their work are the people who end up doing good work. There are so many skills you have to master when writing a novel—SO MANY! So go easy on yourself when you make mistakes.Besides having the flu, Mel also lost her work when Word crashes and she lost four pages. It could have been worse, but she had really liked those pages! Jennie shares a secret, and she calls it “device agnostic.” She talks about how everything she does lives in Dropbox. We end by talking about The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. We all have funny stories that revolve around hoarding childhood treasures.

In this episode, I’m talking to Melissa Li, former creative writer and world builder for Magic: The Gathering. I caught up with Mel right before she left Seattle. Mel moved to LA and is now a Senior Narrative Writer at Riot Games. Mel talks about her creative process. New storylines are developed five to ten years ahead. So Mel can’t tell us what she worked on. But Mel did work on the single player campaign for Duels of the Planeswalkers. Also! Get on your Vorthos hats! We talk about some lore and the current storyline with the Eldrazi, Sorin, Nahiri, Innistrad and Nicol Bolas. Go say hi to Mel on twitter @SMelissaLi You can check out her blog, EtheriumSculptor.tumblr.com Mel has some great cosplay and she also makes some cool things like Aether ray guns and spinny thopter cakes. Special thanks to Zeze Photography for the photo of Mel’s Sarkhan cosplay. If you want to see them, I have links in the show notes at KitchenTableMagic.org Check out more of photos by Zeze Photography on Facebook.com/ZezePhotography I want to thanks and acknowledge Mel again for her work creating worlds for the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. I’m so excited to see her work in future sets. Also, best of luck at Riot Games. Hmmm…. I wonder what Riot is going to be doing with a creative narrative writer? Perhaps a new game? Perhaps an MMO in the League of Legends storyline? Anyhoos, I’m just excited for Amonkhet that’s about to be released. We’ll all find out soon just how much of a jerk Nicol Bolas really is. This episode of Kitchen Table Magic is brought to you by Paragon City Games. Last week, Paragon City Games sent me Die Hard metal dice in Raw Steel Red for a giveaway. I asked you to comment on my Facebook giveaway post about what you think an up-and-coming game store like Paragon City Games should do to support the players and gaming community. Your responses are wonderful and I’d like to read a few of them on air. Paul wrote: I would love to see stores build strong relationships with other stores in the region for scheduling, referrals, and the like. Stores are part of our community and the stronger the relationship between stores the better it is for players. Robin write: I would have loved some classes on how to make a decent deck, especially how to build one with the cards I have rather than what cards to buy. James wrote: Be sure to employ a judge or organizer for your events who is friendly, flexible, and sensitive to the broad range of players you will attract. Choose someone you trust and will allow to have the freedom to make store decisions on the fly that serve your customer service needs. Adrian wrote: Have a series of local tourneys where the prizes are modern staples rather than packs or money. This should keep the hyper-competitive away and attract the more casual crowd. Jordan wrote: Ask players for input on the events they'd like to see. Hold events at various times throughout the week--not everyone has a schedule that accommodates early afternoon/early evening events. Many other listeners said that having a good atmosphere is important and also having private rooms to rent out. And now, for the winner, chosen at random is…. Kate! Kate wrote: Cater to the younger generation! I see young kids at my local shop all the time, and they get intimidated by the adults who are very serious or exclusionary. Maybe host game nights for 13 and Unders? Or have easy to play decks on hand so kids can learn to play with their parents or friends without memorizing tons of mechanics. Congratulations Kate, you are our lucky winner. I’ll be reaching out to send you the RPG set of Die Hard Metal dice in Raw Steel Red. Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts about how game stores can help build community. Many thanks to Paragon City Games for giving me the opportunity to do a giveaway. Well, I know that I'm in the middle of a big ole bloggy break, but Melanie and I have been wanting to record a podcast, and the day before our friend Annie's new book comes out seemed like a fine and wonderful time. Here's the cover of Annie's book. I love it a lot. Annie and I have a delightful chat about 10 minutes into the podcast. Melanie was supposed to be part of that, but unfortunately we (and by "we," I mean "I") could not figure out how to record the three of us at once now that I'm using different software than I did back in the days of FryDaddy. SO - Mel and I talked a little, then Annie and I talked, then Mel and I talked a bunch more. We extensively examined the beach house vs. lake house debate, our favorite summertime foods, the perils of trying to have grown-up conversations when kids are listening, and, of course, our dogs. Also, please excuse the awkward sound effect transition that I used at the beginning and the end of the part with Annie. Just know that I did the best I could with an impromptu back-up plan and very limited technical skills. If I can ever finish this book, I may need to consider signing up to take some sort of online podcasting seminar. I feel like that would be good for all of us. Bless.
