Season 17, Episode 6: Weekly Roundup (Modern + Pioneer) A full week of online tournaments with Phyrexia: All Will Be One are now in the books, and new format staples are emerging in both Modern and Pioneer. It starts with The Mycosynth Gardens, a card that Amulet Titan players have given rave reviews. The only question seems to be: where does Valakut+Dryad fit into the newly colorless manabase? Meanwhile, Dimir Mill players have been feasting upon the Amulet Hopeful sporting playsets of a new toy of their own: Jace, the Perfected Mind. An on-plan threat that plays to the board and has huge upside and versatility seems to be exactly what Dr. Mill ordered. Finally, Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a card in the midst of a meteoric rise. In just days the card has quadrupled in value following tournament wins in every format. The card is loaded with potential in both Modern and Pioneer, and is a worthy target for our next brewing adventure. Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Overthinking MTG: a Closer Look at Individual Cards

Boros planeswalkers have a bad reputation of being boring aggro/equipment filler that don't really give your gameplan a significant boost when they hit the battlefield. I've heard people writing off Nahiri, the Unforgiving as just another Boros planeswalker, and I could not disagree more with that assessment. Compleated Nahiri can take advantage of a filled graveyard by not only reanimating creatures, but also equipment with Living Weapon or For Mirrodin! As a result, this Nahiri can work as a top-end recursive threat in a cheap aggro strategy while also functioning as a combo enabler in midrange decks. Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Often, though, he ends up yammering about whatever's on the top of his mind that the card reminds him of and a half hours passes and it turns out all he's done is share his thoughts on recent news related to Commander, Magic: the Gathering Arena, Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or humorous anecdotes from his kitchen table jank days. Season 17, Episode 1: Brewer's Guide to Phyrexia, Part 1 (Modern) Behold blessed perfection! With Phyrexia: All Will Be One finally revealed in all of its machine glory, we are ready to dive into the glorious work of brewing. Today on Faithless Brewing we present our Modern set review. (This time around Pioneer will be treated separately, so check out our next episode if you are interested in that format). Two cards stand out immediately for their high potential in Modern. The first is Venerated Rotpriest, a 1 drop that could bolster traditional Infect strategies. More importantly, Rotpriest may be powerful enough to spawn a new Storm archetype. Thanks to Summoner's Pact, Ground Rift, and free spells, it's possible to assemble a lethal combination consistently by turn 3. Spellskite not only runs interference but doubles as additional copies of the Priest for purposes of accumulating triggers. The Mycosynth Gardens is enticing in Amulet Titan as a way to set up double Amulet kills. While the Titan experts run their experiments, we can also contemplate other cheap artifacts that might benefit from low-cost doubling. Rarely do lands offer so much brewing potential at such an efficient rate. Beyond those two blue chips, several other cards cards could upgrade existing strategies. Gleeful Demolition gives critical momentum to “whack” strategies alongside Kuldotha Rebirth, Jace, the Perfected Mind is a new toy for Mill with lots of optionality Soulless Jailer improves upon Drannith Magistrate, and the black Skullbomb is a clean 2 for 1 for Urza's Saga. Beyond the known strategies, Phyrexia: ONE also offers enticing brewing targets for the adventurous. Atraxa, Grand Unifier may be the new premier threat to cheat into play. Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler and Nahiri, the Unforgiving open up new brewing space on three mana planeswalkers, while Capricious Hellraiser can fit into fair and unfair strategies alike. And don't rule out the Mother of Machines herself: while Commander players wring their hands over Elesh Norn, her impressive powers may well extend into 1v1 formats. For a standard set release there is a lot going on beneath the surface, and plenty to keep our attentions occupied in the eternal formats. What cards do you have your eye on? Oftentimes these cards seem fun, but never seem to make the cut in other decks. A quick recap: What's a good stuff deck Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix Jeska, Thrice Reborn (True story, she's been reborn three times, so including her original birth, she's been born four times.) Deck Origin Story: Temur is my favorite 3 color combination, and I just felt like I needed a Temur deck. I had bought a Jeska, just because the super fancy version wasn't super pricey ($10) and I knew it was seeing some play in cEDH, so I just wanted to have one, because I really like the partner mechanic. So, I had two choices, Thrasios, or Kydele. I was worried that Thrasios might make the deck seem more powerful than it really was, and I didn't want to draw too much aggro.  Meet out Commanders: Archetype of Imagination On the DL are you just playing this card for the back, Harnfel, Horn of Bounty? Birgi, God of Storytelling  Endurance Only four artifacts in the the deck! Galazeth Prismari Kruphix, God of Horizons Maelstrom Wanderer Mystic Snake Stormbreath Dragon Vizier of Tumbling Sands Creatures: Cathartic Reunion Khorvath's Fury Rishkar's Expertise Surge to Victory Sorceries Berserk Electrodominance Prismari Command (These were just in a pile on my desk, because I had ordered them, these are the types of cards I never seem to be able to find room for) Quandrix Command Veil of Summer Instants Bident of Thassa Crucible of Worlds Artifacts Rhythm of the Wild Sylvan Library Underworld Breach Enchantments All the fetches possible!  Lands I've played the deck 2 times: Shoutout to Prophet and Case! The first game, my deck was pretty slow, and Prophet did some absolutely disgusting things with Valakut Exploration and Nahiri's Lithoforming, along with Amulet of Vigor Game 2, I got off to a faster start with Turn one Birds of Paradise, and turn two Sylvan Library. Got Seedborn Muse and Alchemist's Refuge going, and then played an instant speed Archetype of Imagination, And got to live the Magic Christmas Land of Surge of Victory targeting Blasphemous act!  Playing the deck It was really fun playing this Good Stuff deck! It definitely didn't really have a plan, it just kinda played a lot of really fun cards. It really did remind me of playing in the earlier days of the Commander format.   Summary   Wrap it up     Keep it Social! Please leave your comments or send us an email 3Geekspodcast@gmail.com. Here’s the Zendikar Rising story as worded on mtg.gamepedia.com “Zendikar is a dangerous world of lethal risks where brave adventurers delve into ancient ruins in search of priceless rewards.[9] The storyline features no Eldrazi but we see the ruin they have caused. From the perspective of its inhabitants, it is a hostile place that seems to be actively trying to kill the creatures that have the audacity to live there. The danger is unrelenting: precarious terrain, cunning predators, natural disasters on a massive scale, and the still continuing Roil — the unpredictable ripples of change that wash through the land — all present a constant challenge to survival. Nahiri has returned to Zendikar, and is willing to do anything to get rid of the Roil. Nissa has also returned home, but for reasons of her own.” Follow 3 Geeks Podcast on social media @3geekspodcast Check out the 3 Geeks Podcast @ 3geeks.ninja YouTube for 3 Geeks Podcast youtube.com/3geeksnetwork #MAGICTHEGATHERING #MAGIC #ZENDIKARRISING --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/3-geeks-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/3-geeks-podcast/support

Hi, I'm yoshiislander and you're listening to Vorthos Audio Files, the podcast where I read to you Magic the Gathering stories for your relaxation, while flavoring your knowledge of the multiverse.Welcome to episode 14, and the second installment of the Zendikar arc: With the Eldrazi loose on Zendikar, Gideon Iora and the future Gatewatch fight for the survival of the plane aided by the Planeswalker Kiora. Learn how the Gatewatch was founded during the massive battle at the arc's conclusion. If you're listening to this series, you'll probably enjoy playing Magic with me, live on Twitch, Sunday evenings, Pacific Standard Time, @yoshiislander. The link is in the shownotes. Our second installment takes us over a thousand years ago, when one woman stood between her world and the brink of destruction. The kor Planeswalker Nahiri, called the Lithomancer, helped imprison the Eldrazi on her home plane of Zendikar over 6,000 years ago. Planeswalkers in those days were ageless and virtually immortal, and Nahiri had no intention of leaving Zendikar unguarded. She settled in to keep watch over the Eldrazi titans' prison and waited. And waited. And waited.Until things changed. The Eldrazi stirred. Nahiri woke. This was not the great reawakening of the Eldrazi seen in the storyline of Rise of the Eldrazi—the titans themselves remained imprisoned, even as their lineages ravaged Zendikar. This was around a thousand years earlier, and it might have led to a great rising…were it not for Nahiri standing in the way.Cue the story. In our thirty-first episode, your friendly neighborhood gob-slugs take a crack at unraveling the mysteries of the War of the Spark (#MTGWAR) teaser trailer's tantalizing stained-glass windows, which depicts all 36 planeswalkers that will be in the upcoming set. With a little help from other sources, Hobbes Q. and Joe do a ranking of all 36 on their likelihood of coming out alive and planeswalking at the end of this set's story. Will the Gatewatch reunite? In this episode, I’m talking to Melissa Li, former creative writer and world builder for Magic: The Gathering. I caught up with Mel right before she left Seattle. Mel moved to LA and is now a Senior Narrative Writer at Riot Games. Mel talks about her creative process. New storylines are developed five to ten years ahead. So Mel can’t tell us what she worked on. But Mel did work on the single player campaign for Duels of the Planeswalkers. Also! Get on your Vorthos hats! We talk about some lore and the current storyline with the Eldrazi, Sorin, Nahiri, Innistrad and Nicol Bolas. Go say hi to Mel on twitter @SMelissaLi You can check out her blog, EtheriumSculptor.tumblr.com Mel has some great cosplay and she also makes some cool things like Aether ray guns and spinny thopter cakes. Special thanks to Zeze Photography for the photo of Mel’s Sarkhan cosplay. If you want to see them, I have links in the show notes at KitchenTableMagic.org Check out more of photos by Zeze Photography on Facebook.com/ZezePhotography I want to thanks and acknowledge Mel again for her work creating worlds for the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. I’m so excited to see her work in future sets. Also, best of luck at Riot Games. Hmmm…. I wonder what Riot is going to be doing with a creative narrative writer? Perhaps a new game? Perhaps an MMO in the League of Legends storyline? Anyhoos, I’m just excited for Amonkhet that’s about to be released. We’ll all find out soon just how much of a jerk Nicol Bolas really is. This episode of Kitchen Table Magic is brought to you by Paragon City Games. Last week, Paragon City Games sent me Die Hard metal dice in Raw Steel Red for a giveaway. I asked you to comment on my Facebook giveaway post about what you think an up-and-coming game store like Paragon City Games should do to support the players and gaming community. Your responses are wonderful and I’d like to read a few of them on air. Paul wrote: I would love to see stores build strong relationships with other stores in the region for scheduling, referrals, and the like. Stores are part of our community and the stronger the relationship between stores the better it is for players. Robin write: I would have loved some classes on how to make a decent deck, especially how to build one with the cards I have rather than what cards to buy. James wrote: Be sure to employ a judge or organizer for your events who is friendly, flexible, and sensitive to the broad range of players you will attract. Choose someone you trust and will allow to have the freedom to make store decisions on the fly that serve your customer service needs. Adrian wrote: Have a series of local tourneys where the prizes are modern staples rather than packs or money. This should keep the hyper-competitive away and attract the more casual crowd. Jordan wrote: Ask players for input on the events they'd like to see. Hold events at various times throughout the week--not everyone has a schedule that accommodates early afternoon/early evening events. Many other listeners said that having a good atmosphere is important and also having private rooms to rent out. And now, for the winner, chosen at random is…. Kate! Kate wrote: Cater to the younger generation! I see young kids at my local shop all the time, and they get intimidated by the adults who are very serious or exclusionary. Maybe host game nights for 13 and Unders? Or have easy to play decks on hand so kids can learn to play with their parents or friends without memorizing tons of mechanics. Congratulations Kate, you are our lucky winner. I’ll be reaching out to send you the RPG set of Die Hard Metal dice in Raw Steel Red. Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts about how game stores can help build community. Many thanks to Paragon City Games for giving me the opportunity to do a giveaway. Remember, they are streaming every week at Twitch.tv/ParagonCityGames Also, be sure to spread the love and give them a Like on their Facebook page.
