Part 1 The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondō Summary"The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo presents a unique approach to decluttering and organizing living spaces. Kondo, a professional organizing consultant from Japan, introduces the KonMari Method, which emphasizes tidying by category rather than location and focuses on keeping only those items that “spark joy” in your life. Key Concepts:The Joy Check: At the core of Kondo's method is the idea that you should only keep items that bring you joy. This encourages individuals to create a more meaningful and joyful living environment.Tidying by Category: Kondo suggests decluttering by specific categories: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items. Each category should be tackled in this order to simplify the process and prevent overwhelm. The Right Mindset: Kondo stresses the importance of having the right mindset towards decluttering. This involves respecting your belongings and understanding why you want to tidy up to foster a sense of gratitude for the items in your life. The Importance of a `Tidying Up` Day: Instead of doing small tidying sessions over time, Kondo advocates for a one-time, thorough tidying event. This allows individuals to see a complete transformation in their space, therefore motivating them to maintain a tidy home.Organizing Things Properly: Once decluttering is complete, Kondo provides advice on how to organize what you choose to keep. This includes storing items in a manner that makes them easily accessible and visible, enhancing the efficiency and aesthetics of the space.Mental Clarity and Life Transformation: Kondo believes that tidying up does more than just clean your space; it can also lead to mental clarity and emotional well-being. The process often prompts individuals to reflect on their values and priorities in life. Conclusion:"The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" offers not only practical tips for decluttering but also a philosophy that encourages readers to lead a more intentional and joyful life. The book emphasizes the connection between our physical space and emotional state, making it a significant resource for anyone looking to simplify and enhance their personal environment.Part 2 The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up AuthorMarie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant, author, and television show host, best known for her unique approach to decluttering and tidying up. Her most famous book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing," was first published in Japan in 2011 and later translated into English and released in 2014. Kondo's method, known as the "KonMari" method, emphasizes the importance of keeping only those items that "spark joy" and following a specific order in which to declutter. Other Books Written by Marie KondoMarie Kondo has authored several other books, including:"Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up" (2016) A follow-up to her first book, providing further insights and detailed illustrations of her tidying methods."The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story" (2013) A graphic novel format illustrating her tidying philosophy."Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship" (2019) A children's book featuring two cute characters, Kiki and Jax, emphasizing friendship and tidying up in a kid-friendly manner."Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life" (2020) Co-authored with Scott Sonenshein, this book applies the KonMari method to the workplace, aiming to help people find joy in their professional life."Marie Kondo's Kurashi at Home: How to Create a Life of Meaning and Joy" (2021) This book goes beyond tidying to explore how to create a fulfilling, joy-filled life at home. There's nothing wrong with streamlining and efficiency, but today Meagan and Sarah push back against the notion that time-saving strategies – and products – unilaterally bring more calm to our days. Things feel pretty out of control these days, and it’s so tempting to get caught up in what others are doing, and how aggravated they make us. Mel Robbins proposes a new path: The Let Them Theory.” This two-part theory helps us let go of what we can’t control (“Let Them”) and maximize what we can (“Let Me”--because we only control ourselves!) Using extraordinarily candid examples from her own life and practical tips for applying the theory to your own situations, Mel’s latest book is best described by none other than Oprah, who said this is “ this is the single best self help book” she has ever read. Today's guest is the anti-guru behind the massive No F*cks Given franchise, Sarah Knight. What started life with the Marie Kondo pastiche, The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A F*ck, now comprises 7 guides and three journals which have sold three million copies and a TED talk that's notched up ten million views.  But Sarah wasn't always the queen of giving zero f*cks. Scroll back to her mid-30s and you'd have found her having a panic attack in the Manhattan office where she worked. So started ten years of anxiety and depression, a massive leap into the freelance unknown (which let's face it, worked out pretty well!) and a 1500 mile geographical from Brooklyn to the Caribbean, where she now lives. Sarah joined me from her home in the Dominican Republic (grrrr) to talk about her new book, Grow The F*ck Up, how sometimes it takes getting what you want to realise you don't want it, Why we often need permission to make a change and having the courage to recognise you really don't have enough left in the tank. Sarah also told me how she learnt to give fewer but better fucks, what to do if you're married to a “big f*cking baby”, why selfish shouldn't be a four letter word and she gives us a masterclass in learning to say no. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Grow The F*ck Up by Sarah Knight and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. In 2011, Japanese tidying expert Marie Kondo's first book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up was published. Overnight she went from tidying other people's homes to being known around the world for her KonMari method. It encourages people to only keep items that spark joy and to sort by category, not location. Now a best-selling author with hundreds of her consultants decluttering homes around the globe, Marie speaks to Megan Jones. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Marie Kondo. As the new year approaches, many people focus on setting resolutions or goals for the coming year. But this time is also a great time to reflect on how things went for you this year. In this episode, we break down how to do an athlete self-assessment to recap your year, and how to use that to help you set goals for the future. If you'd like to do your own self-assessment, here are the questions we suggest: 1. GOALS - What were my goals? Were they reasonable? Did I meet them? - Do I still care about this goal? - What factors played a role? 2. TRAINING - Were you consistent? - What plan did you use and did it work? - What were your strengths? - What can you improve on? (THIS is a great place to start thinking about base-building goals) - What type of training did you like most? When did you have the most fun? - What type of training did you dread or avoid? 3. LIFE - Did you have any major life changes/events this year? - How balanced did you feel? - How did you navigate this balance - Any periods you'd want to shift/reconsider in future years? - Any races or distances you'd want to shift/reconsider in future years? This is just a start! How does "death cleaning" help you declutter your life?

Do you really know?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2024 4:42

Back in 2010, Japanese writer Mari Kondo changed how we think about organisation and decluttering with her bestseller The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Behind the book's grand title is a simple premise: anything that doesn't bring you joy should be thrown away.  Since then, a new and somewhat similar trend caught on in the late 2010s: death cleaning. It's mainly designed for people entering the final stages of their life, and making sure they don't overboard before passing away. People started talking about death cleaning in 2018, when Stockholm-based artist and widow Margareta Magnusson published a book called The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. Since then, the trend has started catching on. The name comes from the Swedish döstädning: a combination of the word “dö”, which means death, and “standing”, which means cleaning.  How did Magnusson come up with the term? RJJ Software's Software Development Service This episode of The Modern .NET Show is supported, in part, by RJJ Software's Podcasting Services, whether your company is looking to elevate its UK operations or reshape its US strategy, we can provide tailored solutions that exceed expectations. Show Notes "One of the projects that I work on right now that's probably one of my more successful ones, It's a scientific data visualization library for .NET. It's called ScottPlot. The name is silly. It's because when I made it, I thought I was the only person going to be using it. And then some other people started using it and that wasn't totally unexpected. But now it's about a million and a half installs on NuGet. I think it has like 5,000 stars on GitHub. It's really cool just to watch this thing grow."— Scott Harden Welcome friends to The Modern .NET Show; the premier .NET podcast, focusing entirely on the knowledge, tools, and frameworks that all .NET developers should have in their toolbox. We are the go-to podcast for .NET developers worldwide, and I am not your host: Jamie. I'm Delilah and I will be recording the intro for this episode because Jamie is suffering with a throat infection. In this episode, Scott Harden joined us for the first of three episodes on .NET, open source, and NuGet. This part of the conversation is all about what Scott calls "The Spirit of Open Source in a Modern .NET World." This is the background information on why Scott (and Jamie) believe that developers should look to creating open source works, putting them out there, and gathering feedback from people. Not only will it enhance your technical skill set (and very quickly), but it will also allow you to get experience at failing in a safe space: in public. "Now, humans evolved to like helping people in our in-group. And I think it means a lot that we treat anonymous strangers on the Internet, or we can treat them. Obviously, this can go wrong. But we can treat them as part of our in-group. Like, "hey, we are all in this technical world together. We are struggling. Let's figure this out together." And that bridge of trust and effort and you're sharing your knowledge with another person, it is such a positive experience all around the table"— Scott Harden This episode has a lot of resources in the accompanying show notes, so if you're listening along in a podcast player make sure to head to the website (there'll be a link). That way you don't miss out on all the wonderful things Scott and Jamie talked about. And remember, this is just part one. In the next two parts, Scott and I talk about creating NuGet packages, ensuring their safety and security, and how to be a good citizen of the open source community. Talk about a festive gift for you all. And definitely go ahead and check out Scott's work and writings. He's a really interesting person, an amazing open source contributor, and an all-round great person. Anyway, without further ado, let's sit back, open up a terminal, type in `dotnet new podcast` and we'll dive into the core of Modern .NET. Donate the unwanted clothes, let go of the things that Marie Kondō of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up says no longer bring you joy and start making room for new opportunities. These opportunities can be things you've been dreaming, or even things you may not even have on your radar.  Once you start clearing the clutter from your home, digital space and mind, new things are going to present themselves into your life and be part of your path and your dream life.  Starting this week, start in one area and keep going.  Make it your goal to clean up your space over the next few weeks, creating space and opportunity align the way, but perhaps major shifts in 2025.  If you're focusing on your career and money, clean and organize your office. If you're working on health and weight, clean up your kitchen and cupboards, if you're looking to bring more romance into your life, clean your bedroom and bathrooms, you get the point.  If you're already a super organized person maybe change things up and rearrange or re decorate.  It's time to just shit the energy in our homes and lives. Send us a textWelcome to taste of woo-woo without the cuckoo with Lori Dyan, bestselling author of Burn Your Sh*t: The Life-Changing Magic of Rituals.Rituals aren't just structured, witchy seances—they can be simple habits that ground you, like a nightly skincare routine or banging pots on balconies during COVID. We also have the big societal ones—marriage, graduations, funerals—that help us navigate milestones.Rituals spark something in the brain. Burn Your Sh*t began with Lori's full moon burning ritual, where she literally set her limiting thoughts on fire. We explore the mindset it takes to release negativity, and Lori's online "coven" does just that on Instagram Live, harnessing the lunar vibes. For my midlife ladies, Lori's menopause rituals made me teary—whether it's celebrating womanhood with friends, a liberating boudoir shoot, or a personal candlelit letter-writing moment. When it comes to rituals and practices that are deeply rooted in Indigenous and cultural traditions, Lori speaks on the importance of taking them seriously by investing the time to learn and purchasing products from local Indigenous business owners. And what woo-woo conversation would be complete without (you guessed it) manifestation? Lori breaks down the difference between manifesting and goal-setting—it's all about inspired, intentional action.Stick around for my tarot reading (and wow, did the cards have my number, baby).
