Stepping into the ShenArts Artist Co-op on Winchester's Old Town walking mall, visitors are greeted by a kaleidoscope of color, creativity, and community spirit. In a recent episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Kelly McDermott, president of the Shenandoah Arts Council, to explore the story behind this dynamic space and its impact on the local arts scene. The conversation traces the co-op's journey from vision to reality, highlighting the collaborative effort that transformed a once-hidden space into a thriving gallery. Kelly shares how the Shenandoah Arts Council created the artist co-op that not only showcases a diverse array of art—from paintings and textiles to woodwork, glass, and pottery—but also serves as a launchpad for artists of all backgrounds. The gallery's rotating exhibits and juried membership process ensure that both established and emerging talents have a platform to shine. Beyond the gallery walls, the ShenArts Council is deeply invested in community engagement. The annual ShenArts Fine Art Festival brings together artists, performers, and art lovers for a celebration of creativity, while educational programs and business workshops empower artists to grow their skills and careers. Kelly and Janet discuss the importance of supporting young artists, pricing artwork, and fostering connections between artists, collectors, and the broader community. As Winchester garners national attention for its vibrant downtown and cultural offerings, the ShenArts Artist Co-op stands out as a beacon for creativity and collaboration. Whether you're an artist, a collector, or simply an admirer of the arts, the co-op invites everyone to experience the transformative power of art—and to become part of a growing movement that's putting Winchester on the creative map.
Tired of wearing every hat in your gym? AI can handle repetitive tasks so you can focus on the work only you can do. Today on “Run a Profitable Gym,” Chris Cooper explains how gym owners can use artificial intelligence to automate their businesses without losing the human touch that gyms need. He walks through the three-step process of systemize, optimize, automate—explaining that many gym owners fail to use AI successfully because they're trying to automate broken or undefined processes.Once solid systems have been optimized, gym owners can use AI for basic customer service, habits coaching, inventory management and similar tasks, which frees up their time for high-value work.Coop also shares specific tools Two-Brain gyms are already using, from Garmin Clipboard for tracking athlete data to ManyChat for nurturing leads.Check out the full episode to learn which tasks to automate first in your gym so you can start buying back your time. For a long time now, our food system has been a primary indicator for so many markers of health in our society, from the way that our food is produced, what kinds of food we eat, how we cook, how it affects our health and even our ethics as consumers. For the next four weeks I'll be taking a look our food system from a variety of different view-points and analysis in order to shed light on some of the lesser know factors that influence how we eat and how our dietary choices shape the food industry at large. To kick off this series I spoke with Jon Steinman, author of the new book “Grocery Story: the promise of food co-ops in the age of grocery giants.” Now Jon has studied and worked with everything about food for more than twenty years. He formerly produced and hosted a popular podcast called Deconstructing Dinner, was a writer and host for a web series by the same name, and now curates the annual “Deconstructing Dinner” film festival of compelling food documentaries. Jon was also an elected director from 2006-2016 of the Kootenay Co-op – Canada's largest independent retail consumer food co-op, serving as Board President from 2014-2016 Now I consider myself fairly well informed about the food industry from personal research and that fact that in the last decade I've worked directly in many branches of the industry from refrigerated shipping, industrial farms, organic farms, fish processing, many different roles in restaurants, and even the permaculture farm that many of you have heard me talk about for over a year now, but I never knew so much about the influence that the giant grocery chains and supermarkets have on every aspect of our food from how it's grown till it gets to our plates. This is a very eye opening look, not only at the broken aspects of the food industry, but the very tangible and accessible solutions that co-op grocery stores can be, not only for getting access to better food and transforming the way the industry is incentivized to operate, but also for the positive impact that co-ops can have on our communities and local economies. We also talk about solutions for access to high quality food for low-income neighborhoods and much more.

The term Co-op has become synonymous with farm supply, feed, and seed. But do you know why it's called "the co-op"? These organizations came to existence out of necessity and from local farmers and landowners coming together to leverage their collective buying power. It is more than just a name, and odds are there is one in your community. We sat down with Jeff Hays, the manager of Lowndes Farm Supply to discuss the Co-op difference and the evolution of the farm supply business over the years. Including the challenge of keeping it local while competing with large franchises and internet business. We encourage you to go visit your local Co-op, it is more than just a name.

The Net Promoter System Podcast – Customer Experience Insights from Loyalty Leaders
Episode 253: Desjardins thought its cooperative roots made it member-first by default. Then members started leaving. Desjardins is a 125-year-old financial co-op based in Quebec. It has deep community ties and a proud history. But that pride masked a painful truth: Members no longer saw it as customer-centric. The organization believed its cooperative structure guaranteed loyalty—until low NPS scores and rising member churn showed otherwise. Mathieu Staniulis and Séverine Clairet recount how Desjardins confronted its own mythology, restructured governance, and began treating feedback as a system, not a score. Desjardins' wake-up call came in the early 2010s. Despite its co-op status, members said the experience felt disjointed. Branches operated as near-independent entities. “It was really difficult to see the full scope of our company because we were presenting ourselves as different companies,” says Mathieu. CEO Guy Cormier led a bold move: unifying the 17 siloed organizations within Desjardins under a single governance structure. But structure alone wasn't enough. Internally, CX, risk, and profit still pulled in different directions. As Mathieu puts it, “People in charge of customer experience only talk about customer experience and NPS. People in P&L ownership talk about their performance—their bottom line. How can they improve their performance, especially on the financial metrics? And then you have the risk people trying to manage risk and deal with regulators always bringing new regulations, especially in the financial industry. And I believe we have to find a way to work together to balance customer experience, efficiency or financial metrics, and risk management.” The challenge became about integrating those forces to make balanced, member-first decisions—without sacrificing performance. Now Desjardins faces a new frontier: recreating intimacy in a digital world. Transactions moved online. But financial advice—the core of trust and loyalty—remains unsolved. The question, Mathieu says, is urgent and unanswered: “How do we bring advice into a digital world?” Guests: Mathieu Staniulis, Vice President, Products, Solutions & Digital, and Chief Transformation Officer | Séverine Clairet, Vice President Customer Experience & Marketing Strategy, Desjardins Host: Rob Markey, Partner, Bain & Company Give us feedback: Customer Confidential Podcast Feedback Send us a note: Contact Rob Time-Stamped Topics 00:01 – A logout button reveals blind spots in member experience 00:04 – Desjardins' founding story: community aid in a kitchen 00:06 – “Member-owned” in theory vs. practice across 17 silos 00:08 – How Guy Cormier unified Desjardins under one governance model 00:09 – Why NPS lagged despite a strong co-op identity 00:12 – “The S means system”: transforming how feedback drives action 00:15 – Balancing CX, P&L, and risk without silos 00:18 – The call center debate: cost now vs. loyalty later 00:20 – Journey teams as a model for cross-functional accountability 00:21 – Digital did the easy part, so what comes next? 00:22 – Can “digital” be intimate? The next frontier for co-ops Notable Quotes [15:00] “It was really difficult to see the full scope of our company because we were presenting ourselves as different companies. … We had to pivot from working together, but in silos.” [16:00] “We believe we're member-focused, but we were lagging in NPS. We were also losing membership, so we had to pivot and change all of that, changing the way we look internally at our performance, raising NPS as the top KPI for our company.” [16:00] “That's the equation of NPS. Buying more, referring more, and staying longer mean more profitability. For P&L, it means better risk management, because there's a tendency to lower your risk when you have loyal customers with you. So you have to bring that all together.” [17:00] “We were very proud of Desjardins, especially in the Quebec market. In some lines of products, we have almost 40% market share. You will see a branch of Desjardins in every town. It's deep in our roots.” Additional Resources Read Bain's case study, From Laggard to Leader: Desjardins Evolves Member Centricity for the Digital Age: https://www.bain.com/client-results/from-laggard-to-leader-desjardins-evolves-member-centricity-for-the-digital-age/

Recorded: July 23rd 2025 | Welcome back to episode 11 of Inside The Bus. This week we dive into the world of Bussin as we have been looking at possible new office spaces. There are mixed feelings throughout the office, mostly Coop, on whether or not us moving would create a corporate feel. Following the that, we get into what an XXL Cypher would look like with the Bussin guys. We go through the order in which we would go in, who would be the best at it and if there should be teams going into it. Let us know your thoughts if we should do a cypher.
