Here we are! We've hit the 500th and final episode of The Hamilcast (at least for now). Please excuse the shameless reference, but I am honored and thrilled that in this episode, Lin-Manuel Miranda really and sincerely teaches me how to say goodbye.  And honestly, we have a blast! This episode is beyond packed! We talk about how much we love Renee Elise Goldsberry (including Co-Op and Girls5Eva), the Dawson's Creek reunion, we cast movies (and Hamilton!) with The Muppets, you'll learn about Lin's very specific favorite parts of Hamilton including references that were cut almost immediately and the things that really are just coincidences because in a show with layers on layers on layers, some things really are just happy accidents. Lin also talks about The Hamilton Mixtape, that time Steven Sondheim visited his high school and shared a bunch of West Side Story secrets with the class, and there are at least TWO deep dives: one is Lin's writing process with Warriors: The Concept Album and working on bringing it to the stage, and the other is about professional wrestling AND WHEN I TELL YOU I WAS ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT. I'm not even kidding; it is fascinating and so much fun.  And speaking of fun... I mean it 100% when I say I've had the time of my life making this podcast for you. The Hamilcast has changed my life, full stop. It's been a decade of stories and memories and friendships and "skitch, how did we get here?" moments. Each and every one of you have really made me feel like the richest girl in town, especially as we've been celebrating the end of the show and the journey we've all been on together. I also mean it when I say that there is always a possibility the show will drop more episodes in the future (Mariska, call me!), so you never know what the future may hold. The Hamilcast website is staying up, the episodes will live online forever, and @TheHamilcast will continue to be active on socials. You can find me online @GillianWithaG and I'll still be recapping true crime documentaries with Patrick over at True Crime Obsessed. Mike - you know Mike! - is @MPSmithNYC on everything.  These last eight episodes with The Cabinet were recorded at WTF Studios in Manhattan in October and November of 2025. They were produced by Natalie Grillo from Any Moment Productions, in collaboration with Meghan Miles. These two incredible women are invaluable and I am so grateful for them both.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to come on this show and generously share your stories with me, sometimes more than once. I am so lucky to call so many of you my friends. And to the listeners, to quote Tommy Kail when he first came on in 2018: I made this show for you. Thank you for being excited about things with me. It has been a true honor to do this for ten years and 500 episodes and I could not have done it without you. Rayburn Electric Cooperative faced three years of power costs in five days during the 2021 storm. The experience transformed the organization's approach to risk, generation assets, and long-term planning. When Winter Storm Uri swept across Texas in February 2021, Rayburn Electric Cooperative found itself staring down a crisis that would reshape the organization's entire operational philosophy. The generation and transmission cooperative, which serves approximately 625,000 Texans across 16 counties northeast of Dallas, incurred three years' worth of power costs in just five days. “Bankruptcy was certainly one of the options on the table,” David Naylor, president and CEO of Rayburn Electric Cooperative, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “We were thankful we didn't have to go that route. We were able to come up with a solution where we paid everything we owed—and then we took a hard look in the mirror and asked ourselves what we needed to do differently.” That self-evaluation led to strategic decisions that fundamentally shifted Rayburn's power supply operations, transforming the cooperative from an organization with minimal owned generation resources into one that now owns and operates a major power plant—with another under construction. From Crisis to Acquisition Within two years of Uri, Rayburn acquired the Panda Sherman Power Plant, a 758-MW natural gas–fired combined cycle facility located just outside the cooperative's service territory. The acquisition doubled Rayburn's balance sheet, but Naylor said the plant checked critical boxes that emerged from the cooperative's post-Uri analysis. “When we looked at who benefited from Uri—or at least came out of it in a solid situation—it was the people who owned generation assets, and whose units ran,” Naylor explained. “The Panda Sherman plant performed great during Winter Storm Uri. It had room for additional capacity if we wanted to expand in the future. And for someone that was staring bankruptcy in the face a couple years earlier, winning that auction over several private equity companies was a tremendous success.” Building for Growth One concern Rayburn had when acquiring the Panda Sherman plant—now called Rayburn Energy Station (RES)—was its size. Leadership initially projected the cooperative wouldn't grow into the plant's capacity until 2030 or later. That timeline proved wildly optimistic. “We're projecting 25% growth over the next 10 years, and that's not counting any data centers or large loads—just normal organic growth,” Naylor said. “We grew into Rayburn Energy Station a lot faster than we anticipated.” That rapid growth prompted Rayburn to begin construction on a second gas plant at the same site. The cooperative secured turbines and transformers under contract in late 2024, with a commercial operation date targeted for June 2028. According to Naylor, the timing proved fortuitous: suppliers indicated that waiting just a couple more months would have resulted in significantly higher costs and delivery dates pushed out by three to four years. The project is supported in part by the Texas Energy Fund, a $10 billion pool of low-cost loans created by the Texas Legislature after Uri to incentivize new dispatchable generation. Of more than 125 initial applicants, only 17 were selected to advance—and Rayburn is the only cooperative among them.

Vision, Volunteers, & Veggies: An Update from Winchester Co-Op Market

    The Valley Today

When the idea of a community-owned grocery store begins to take root, it rarely starts with shelves and shopping carts. Instead, it starts with neighbors — people who believe food can connect a community more deeply than any national chain ever could. That belief sits at the heart of the Winchester Co-Op Market, a grassroots effort working to bring a member-owned grocery store to the city. During this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael reconnects with board leaders Michael Daryabeygi, vice president, and Christina McCarthy, board secretary, to explore where the project stands, how cooperatives work, and why now is the right moment for Winchester to embrace this model. A Model Rooted in Cooperation Michael's passion for cooperatives began long before the Winchester project. Having previously worked at the Takoma Park–Silver Spring Food Co-Op, he saw firsthand how cooperative businesses respond directly to the needs of the communities they serve. Unlike traditional grocery stores, food co-ops operate under a democratic ownership model. Members aren't just customers — they are owners and voters, guiding major decisions that shape the organization's future. Christina expands on that idea, explaining that cooperatives are not new or experimental. In fact, they've existed for centuries across cultures and continents. From farming cooperatives to credit unions, the model thrives on shared resources and collective decision-making. Although the Winchester Co-Op Market is not a nonprofit, it is a "not-for-profit" business — meaning profits remain local and benefit the community rather than distant shareholders. Why Winchester — and Why Now Winchester's agricultural heritage plays a major role in the project's momentum. Both Michael and Christina see renewed interest in local farming, regional food systems, and sustainable purchasing habits. As consumers increasingly question where their food comes from, the co-op offers an alternative — one that supports local growers, producers, and makers while strengthening the local economy. Janet compares the vision to open-air markets found throughout Europe: places where food shopping feels personal, local, and deeply connected to community life. While the Winchester Co-Op won't mirror those markets exactly, the spirit remains the same — neighbors supporting neighbors. Building a Grocery Store Takes More Than Good Intentions Starting a cooperative is not a quick or simple process. Christina makes it clear that this isn't something that happens over a few planning meetings. The board follows a national startup framework supported by the Food Co-Op Initiative, which emphasizes long-term sustainability over speed. Across the country, some cooperatives spend years building membership before opening their doors. The Winchester group has already developed a strategic plan — a detailed roadmap outlining membership goals, timelines, feasibility studies, and funding benchmarks. That plan guides every step forward. Importantly, the effort remains entirely volunteer-driven. "No one's getting paid," Christina explains. Board members donate their time, skills, and energy because they believe deeply in what the co-op can mean for the community. Membership: The Engine That Moves Everything Forward At this stage, membership is the foundation of the entire project. A Winchester Co-Op membership is a one-time $200 household investment. Each household receives one vote, reinforcing the democratic structure of the organization. Members help decide everything from product priorities to how profits are eventually reinvested into the community. Membership funds don't build shelves yet — they build credibility. These dollars support feasibility studies, professional consultants, market research, and planning expertise. Just as importantly, they demonstrate community buy-in to lenders and partners evaluating the project's viability. Christina emphasizes that you don't have to be a member to shop at the store once it opens. Membership simply allows residents to shape the vision and guide decisions. Strength in Numbers While $200 may seem small on its own, collective participation creates real momentum. Janet draws a parallel to community fundraising models — where individual contributions add up quickly when hundreds of people believe in the same goal. The co-op relies on that exact principle. The response so far has been encouraging. Community picnics and informational events have drawn stronger attendance than expected, fueling both enthusiasm and confidence. Even supporters from outside the region have joined — including former residents and seasonal visitors who want to invest in Winchester's future. Volunteers: The Heart of the Movement Not everyone can afford membership — and the board understands that. Volunteers play an equally vital role. At this stage, the co-op relies on community members willing to help spread the word, attend events, and lend professional skills when possible. From marketing and planning to outreach and research, every contribution matters. To support this next phase, the organization is preparing for a volunteer recruitment fair in February, preceded by two major educational events in January. Learning from a National Voice To help residents better understand cooperatives, the Winchester Co-Op Market is welcoming Jon Steinman, author of Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-Ops in the Age of Grocery Giants. Steinman brings international experience, having served as an elected director of Canada's largest consumer retail co-op. His work explores how food systems evolved — and how communities can reclaim them. Two events will anchor his visit: January 27: A volunteer training session designed to help advocates clearly explain the co-op model January 28: A public community talk at Winchester Brew Works, open to anyone curious about cooperatives Both events emphasize conversation, education, and community connection — complete with shared food and local collaboration. Creating Community Through Food Beyond logistics and planning, one theme echoes throughout the conversation: connection. Christina describes cooperatives as places with a distinct feel — a different energy, smell, and rhythm than traditional grocery stores. They are spaces where food becomes a gathering point, not just a transaction. Michael adds that co-ops across the country form a tight-knit network, sharing lessons and supporting one another's growth. Winchester's effort is part of something much larger — a national movement focused on rebuilding local food systems. Staying Informed and Getting Involved For residents interested in following the journey, the Winchester Co-Op Market offers multiple entry points: Membership opportunities Volunteer sign-ups Educational events A regularly published newsletter cleverly titled "The Local Beets" The newsletter shares project updates, explains cooperative principles, and highlights how local food choices can impact families and communities.  A Vision Built Together As the conversation closes, one message rings especially clear: this project isn't about groceries alone. It's about preserving local identity. It's about keeping dollars circulating close to home. And it's about giving Winchester residents a voice in how their food system works. The Winchester Co-Op Market remains a work in progress — but with growing membership, dedicated volunteers, and strong community interest, the foundation is firmly in place.

In the world of basketball, defense is just as important as offense. And when it comes to locking down the opposing team's top scorers, few players in NBA history can match the skills of 5x champion as a key member of the Showtime Lakers and 1987 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Michael Cooper. In this video, Coop takes us on a deep dive into his top five defensive assignments. From guarding the likes of Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas, to shutting down George Gervin and Alex English, Cooper proved time and time again that he was one of the best defenders to ever step onto the court. But what made Cooper so special? It wasn't just his quick hands or his ability to read the offense. It was his commitment to studying his opponents and understanding their tendencies. Cooper knew that defense was about more than just stopping a player from scoring - it was about disrupting their rhythm, throwing them off their game, and forcing them to make mistakes. Throughout this video, he breaks down each of defensive assignment and provides insights into his techniques, strategies, and mindset. We'll see how he used his length and agility to frustrate top scorers in the 1980's NBA. So if you're ready to go inside the mind of an NBA defensive legend, join in and explore Michael Cooper's top five defensive assignments in NBA history. You won't be disappointed! In this episode of “Run a Profitable Gym,” Two-Brain founder Chris Cooper explains why gym owners need to stop consuming clickbait speculation about CrossFit's sale and start working on what actually matters: their businesses.Stop paying the “distraction tax”—hours spent watching videos, scrolling comments and worrying about things you can't control cost you opportunities to generate revenue, build client relationships and preserve decision-making capacity. To give you a concrete plan to improve your business in a time of uncertainty, Coop walks through a five-step process you can use to objectively measure the value of any gym affiliation using real numbers:✅ Check local search volume for the brand✅ Track where your leads come from✅ Calculate marketing ROI with a simple formula✅ Measure revenue from affiliation programs✅ Assess retention value among engaged membersIf you decide to rebrand, Chris also covers the true costs, from domain changes and social media updates to new signage and content, so you understand what's actually required. The key takeaway: CrossFit LLC (or any brand affiliation) has never had less impact on your success than right now. Your coaching, client relationships and business systems actually drive results.Watch this episode to get the decision-making framework that will help you make smart, data-driven choices about affiliation.
