This month we hear from a farmer in the Chinampa region outside Mexico City, we then get the lowdown on the recent Nyéléni forum in Sri Lanka, and finally we talk to The Missing Miller who helps run the newly-founded Nottingham Mill co-op. Plus, we want to hear from you as we gather stories from anyone who listened to the Cereal series - please send Farmerama a voice note on +447466301300 telling us who you are, where you are based, and whether the series sparked any change or action, big or small. In this final episode of our Autumn series, we start by speaking to Cassandra Gardano about life farming in the Chinampas in Mexico. The Chinampas – sometimes known as floating farms – are one of the most productive and biodiverse agroecological systems in the world, dating back over 1,500 years. Cassandra tells us about local efforts to preserve traditional farming knowledge through the Etiqueta Chinampera certification, and the vital work Chinampa farmers are doing is to preserve and reintroduce the indigenous species of the area like the axolotl. Next, we speak to Paula Gioia of La Via Campesina, who gives us the low-down on the Nyéléni Forum held earlier this year in Sri Lanka – a global gathering of food sovereignty movements. Paula explains how the forum builds on decades of organising to strengthen solidarity among peasants, fisherfolk, indigenous and pastoralist communities, and how this year's Kandy Declaration sets out an ambitious shared political agenda for systemic transformation “now and forever.” Finally, we catch up with Emma Shires, who runs The Missing Miller and co-founded the Nottingham Mill Co-op. Emma tells us about how the Nottingham Mill Co-op grew from a shared corner of a bakery into a thriving community grain hub. She also reflects on her business name, The Missing Miller (inspired by our Cereal series) and why rebuilding local milling infrastructure is so important in the UK. We have been totally blown away at how many people have gotten in touch over the last 6 years to share a bit of your story after listening to Cereal, and now we want to hear from you again and see where things are now. Please send Farmerama a voice note on +447466301300 telling us who you are, where you are based, and whether the series sparked any change or action, big or small. The team will also be at ORFC in January. If you're planning on attending and have a Cereal related memory or story to share, let us know and we'll track you down with a microphone. You can email us on farmeramaradio@gmail.com or DM us on Instagram.

Is AI quietly pushing us to work alone when creativity has always thrived on collaboration? I'm joined by Joseph "Coop" Cooper, co-founder of Nullshot, to unpack a different vision for how AI should support creators, builders, and teams. And before any Interstellar fans get too excited, this is not the cinematic space explorer navigating wormholes; this is a serial entrepreneur building something very real on Earth, where conversations turn into working applications in real time. Coop shares how his journey from modding video games as a child to launching multiple ventures across crypto and developer tools shaped his belief that current AI tools lean too heavily towards individual productivity. He explains the thinking behind Nullshot's jam rooms, where multiple people can co-create with AI in a shared space, instead of building in isolation. We explore how this model encourages quieter voices to contribute, removes the pressure of pitching ideas, and replaces it with live prototypes that speak for themselves. Alongside the enthusiasm for this collaborative future, Coop also addresses the tougher questions around ownership, fair credit, and how contributions should be recognised without being gamed. There is an honest discussion about whether AI-powered creation lowers barriers for everyone or risks shifting too much power towards the platforms that control it. The balance between opportunity and risk feels central to what Nullshot is attempting to achieve. As teams, founders, and creators look for better ways to bring ideas to life together, this conversation offers a grounded look at what shared AI creation could mean in practice. Are we ready to move from solo prompts to collective building, and what might that shift say about how we define creativity in the next phase of digital work? What do you think, could collaborative AI change the way your team builds, and how would you feel about sharing ownership in a live creative space? The worry about whether H5N1 will trigger a human pandemic has concealed a startling reality. Avian influenza has already taken an enormous toll on the lives of other animals. Since 2005, the number of wild and domesticated birds killed is greater than the combined human populations of the United States and Russia. Bird flu is burning through wild flocks, poultry farms, and mammal populations, including those of sea mammals. We look at the places where the virus can recombine and mutate, and why this version is not simply dying out as it has in years past. At a squawking live poultry market in Brooklyn, and on a Long Island duck farm, we hear about the difficult experience of euthanizing 100,000 birds and whether a farm can recover from such a devastating loss. And finally, we ask, why poultry vaccines that could curb the spread of H5N1 aren't being used. But we begin our episode with descriptions of the soaring global migrations of birds whose feats of endurance help us understand why H5N1 is widespread in birds worldwide. Guests: Scott Weidensaul – Ornithologist, bird migration researcher, and author of "A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds" David Swayne – Bird flu veterinarian Doug Corwin – Farmer and owner of Crescent Duck Farm, Aquebogue, New York Jon Cohen – Senior correspondent with Science Magazine, where you can find his recent article, “The Pandemic Next Time,” and author of "Planning Miracles: How to Prevent Future Pandemics" Featuring music by Dewey Dellay and Jun Miyake You can get early access to ad-free versions of every episode by joining us on Patreon. This podcast is sponsored by Children's Mercy. Every 8 minutes, one American life is lost to fentanyl. In 2021, fentanyl was responsible for 77% of drug-induced deaths for ages 14-18. Kansas City is not immune to this growing problem. Today we are talking with Jenny Ecord, who tells the story of her nephew, Cooper, who lost his life to fentanyl poisoning at 16. Her family has made it their mission to spread awareness and education about fentanyl in his honor. We also hear from Dr. Michelle DePhillips, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children's Mercy. She discusses what she sees in the ER in Kansas City, why fentanyl is dangerous for teens, and how we can prevent future tragedies. In our conversation we cover: How prominent fentanyl issues are in the KC metro What does fentanyl does to the body. Common ages for fentanyl related emergencies. How these drugs get in the hands of teens. How one family turned a tragedy into a prevention program for teens. How parents can have important conversations about drugs with their kids. Jenny Ecord, RN, APRN-C is a wife, mother, sister, aunt and daughter. She is also a pediatric nurse practitioner at Children's Mercy and has been a strong advocate for children her entire career. Her story of fentanyl is a very personal family tragedy. She is the aunt of a young teenager, Cooper, who lost his life to a fentanyl poisoning in August 2021. Cooper was 16 years old when he died. Jenny and her family have made it their mission to spread awareness and education about fentanyl in Coop's honor. They do not want any other family to suffer a devastating loss like theirs has. A foundation has been created for this cause along with a strong social media presence. Jenny and her sister-in-law, Cooper's mother, have talked in schools, at parent meetings, neighborhood gatherings, churches to share their message. They have met with many political and law enforcement officials and are working closely with these organizations. Michelle DePhillips, MD, is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and pediatric emergency medicine resident rotation director at Children's Mercy.
