Dozens of major companies have sent a letter to Washington's governor and state legislature to "review and revise" the tax and budget proposals, saying they threaten the state's economic stability.Alaska Airlines, Amazon, Costco, Microsoft, Nordstrom, PSE, Zillow, T-Mobile, Redfin, Virginia Mason, WaFd Bank, Weyerhaeuser, Puget Sound Energy, and the Seattle Mariners were among the co-signers on the letter addressed to Gov. Bob Ferguson, State Senate Leader Jamie Pedersen, House Speaker Laurie Jinkins, and Minority leaders John Braun and Drew Stokesbury. This comes a day after Ferguson said he would veto any bill with a proposed wealth tax off the table in any spending package amid approvals by the House and Senate for a slew of new taxes.
Ara Erickson is Vice President of Corporate Sustainability at Weyerhaeuser, where she is accountable for the development and implementation of the company's comprehensive sustainability strategy, including three areas where the company is in a unique position to participate: working forests contribution to climate change solutions, the role of sustainable products in ensuring housing for everyone, and support for thriving rural communities. She serves as a board member for American Forests, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States, is a founding steering committee member for the Women's Forest Congress, and uses her voice to be an advocate for sustainable, working forests. Ara is an authentic, compassionate, and driven leader, best known for building partnerships through collaboration, transparency and honest communication. Prior to Weyerhaeuser, she served as Director of the Green City Partnerships program with a regional conservation organization, Forterra, and as a forest-based researcher, environmental consultant and educator. She received her M.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Washington and her B.S. in Resource Management from the University of California, Berkeley. Ara Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The development of Weyerhaeuser's sustainability strategy How timber harvesting is done sustainability Weyerhaeuser's forest carbon credit principles Plans for achieving emissions reductions goals by 2030 Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Ara's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give to other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I think all of us in sustainability are here because we're passionate about sustainability, but primarily there's also something that drove us here. For me, I'm passionate about forestry and forest and these products that make our lives so much better. We get warm, cozy homes to live in, we hope, and I've been able to channel my passion for sustainability and forestry at the same time. So I always recommend finding the thing that you get excited about and want to be part of, whether that's outdoor recreation or literature, whatever it might be, and then channel sustainability through that passion. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I love that sustainability is finding its way into all the nooks and crannies inside companies, whether that's company level strategy or employee volunteering programs or community involvement. That it is so broad and that can make it really complex, but I just love that I'm seeing sustainability showing up in so many levels of companies now, and so many very important decision making levers and places where employees feel really connected to it and communities are directly impacted. To me, that feels like sustainability has reached the point where people are recognizing how important it is to help drive strategy and help drive outcomes for both their own employees and and their communities. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? I have one sitting on my desk right now that I just started to read. I'm about a quarter of the way through it and it's been wonderful so far. It's called Chief Sustainability Officers at Work: How CSOs Build Successful Sustainability and ESG Strategies and by Chrissa Pagitsas. It's a great compilation of an incredible amount of leadership from all different types of companies on how they've been able to drive these strategies in their companies. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I have a set of things that I rely on a lot. One of them is just the basic Strunk and White old book which has been around for a long time. But as sustainability professionals we really need to know how to write compelling pieces that are clear, so I always have that in my toolkit. I also think it's really important for us sustainability professionals to be able to take care of ourselves and make certain that we still have the energy to keep doing our work well, whatever that means for our daily practices of self care. I personally do a lot of meditation and journaling in the morning and tea drinking in order to really help settle me into a space where I can be really productive and impactful when I show up to my job. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Weyerhaeuser? We have a full website at www.weyerhaeuser.com. At www.weyerhaeuser.com/sustainability we have tons of information and resources, great examples that we talked about today like the principles documents and our carbon record. There's some fun videos on there as well. Then there's a ton of information about forestry in general that's put out by some organizations like the National Alliance of Forest Owners, and there's a great tool that the American Wood Council has created that's about fiber sourcing and where your wood comes from. You can actually type in the grade stamp of the lumber if you happen to buy a piece of lumber and find out the region it comes from. Those are both sites that we've really helped generate a lot of the content for and fed materials to so that people can be learning about these incredible forests and the products that come from them.

Today we had the very exciting and interesting opportunity to visit with Russell Hagen, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Weyerhaeuser. Russell is responsible for Weyerhaeuser's real estate, energy and natural resources businesses. Prior to his appointment as Chief Development Officer, Russell served as Chief Financial Officer from 2016 – 2021. Weyerhaeuser is the largest private owner of timberlands in North America, with 10.5 million acres in the US and 14 million acres licensed in Canada. In addition to timber products, Weyerhaeuser's businesses include recreation, real estate, land and minerals, wood products, and climate solutions, including renewable energy development, forest carbon and CCS, and carbon credits. We were thrilled to visit with Russell. In our discussion, Russell shares background on the history and scale of Weyerhaeuser and their business segments, Weyerhaeuser's sustainable forestry practices, the company's natural climate solutions business unit and ambitious growth targets for the business (aiming to grow the unit's EBITDA to $100 million by 2025), and the current state and pricing of voluntary carbon credits. We discuss Weyerhaeuser's strategy for maintaining high quality and credible carbon projects, the company's partnership with Carbon Direct, Weyerhaeuser's approach to acquisitions and the return profile for timber investments, forest management and sustainability, Russell's approach to strategic development as a former CFO, the natural climate solutions market, and solar and carbon capture projects. We explore factors in determining good locations for forest carbon projects, balancing carbon projects with timber operations, growing recognition and demand for nature-based solutions, particularly among tech companies, technological innovations including the potential for innovations in bioengineering and alternative fuels derived from wood fiber, and the potential for significant innovation and capital investment in both nature-based and technological solutions for carbon management in the future. It was our pleasure to host Russell and we greatly enjoyed the discussion. Mike Bradley kicked us off by highlighting that over the last 7-8 trading days, the 10-year bond yield has been stuck in a narrow trading range of ~4.25%. There could be some fireworks in the bond market on Friday when the all-important PCE Deflator report drops. WTI price rallied another $3/bbl this past week and pushed WTI price to ~$81/bbl. Global oil demand, rather than supply, seems to be the biggest catalyst to break WTI price out of its recent trading band of $70-$90/bbl. He noted natural gas price has pulled back to ~$2.75/M despite a hot weather outlook and that lower-48 dry gas production has rebounded from a recent trough below 99bcfpd back up to over 101bcfpd, which could prove problematic in reducing the huge current gas storage surplus. Broader markets continue posting new highs as they follow the direction of AI/Tech equities. Broader equities seem to be running on fumes/losing trading momentum as broader market indices (S&P 500 & Nasdaq) still remain technically overbought. Energy was by far the best-performing S&P sector this past week (+4%). He noted YTD performance of Timber Companies, S&P Timber REITs, S&P Materials Sector and REITs Index and rounded out the conversation by highlighting performance (YTD, 1yr, 2yr & 3yr) in EU Carbon Permits. Todd Scruggs flagged the recent bankruptcy of Zachry and subsequent layoffs, highlighting the scale and complexity of industrial projects and the inflationary forces involved (Zachry press release linked here). Thanks again to Russell for joining us and a special thank you to the whole Weyerhaeuser team for their help with making this episode possible. Our b

About the author of "DEALS DANGER DESTINY"So, if you thought a Renaissance Man was a thing of the past, think again. That opening quote was made by Dr. John LaCasse, who has ricocheted through life with ups and downs - ultimate highs and dismal lows. This high ridge walker from Montana became a wizard of wealth in Seattle as a successful yacht broker for 25 years. It brought him into relationships with business magnates such as Boeing, and Weyerhaeuser, political figures such as Secretary of State George Shultz, actor Gene Hackman, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, Adriana Salinas de Gortari, and organized crime bosses Meyer Lansky and Johnny Carbone.Fast and Furious with Penthouse style, fast cars, and outlaw bikers…Being handed checks in the millions, drinking and smoking to excess—it was all real until one day it hit him: “Why am I living this life? Why am I letting this happen?”Even though marriage and fatherhood provided new sources of happiness and responsibility, the loss of two sons brought unimaginable grief. The piles of money meant nothing. Curiosity and education meant everything. John returned to school in middle age, but his attitude got him kicked out of three universities as he became reacquainted with "Who has the power." John ultimately prevailed with three terminal degrees including a Ph.D., in Education eLearning.Fearless John has waded into more than one situation with some interesting results. On a large transaction involving a meeting with the Chairman of Native Northwest Tribes, he realized he had no experience with Native Americans. When he showed up for the meeting, the tribal chairman motioned for John to take his seat across from him. John sat. The Chairman sat. They stared at each other. John raised his right hand and said, “How.” The Chairman leaned in and in a soft voice replied, “I have a master's degree, and I'm writing my Ph.D. dissertation on Biomass at the University of Washington, and I speak English.” That became a friendship that lasts to this day, and John carries a Chief Honor Blanket from The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. ******************John LaCasse is the founding principal of Silvertip Research. Investigator David Paulides has focused his attention for the last ten years on the compelling evidence that there is an unusual set of circumstances for many of the missing that vanish in the wilderness. In the first half, he shared his newest research into mysterious disappearances in Washington state and elsewhere and the odd details that surround these vanishings. Paulides said he has compiled various "profile points" around the cases that come up repeatedly, though they don't apply to every case. These include weather events at the time of the disappearance, missing clothes or shoes, many of the disappeared have an illness or disability that isn't obvious, and a "point of separation" where the person is out of sight or goes a different way. Among those that are found alive, they typically don't remember how they went missing or what happened, and if they are found dead, it's generally in or adjacent to a body of water. He detailed a 1999 case when two experienced and well-equipped mountain climbers, Chris Hartonas and Raymond Vakili, disappeared near Camp Muir on Mount Rainier. Helicopters and canines were used in the initial 10-day search, but nothing was found. Paulides found this remark from the National Park Service rather sobering: "This is the fourth serious incident on the Muir snowfield in 1999. It's difficult to speculate what exactly happened to the men, and it's perplexing when two experienced, cautious, and mature climbers just disappear." Among other curiosities in cases, he said there were a series of intellectuals who vanished, including about six physicists who were all German. Paulides also touched on a case where workers on Weyerhaeuser property, west of Mount. St. Helens saw a UFO pick up and remove an elk. The witnesses all expressed concern that they could be next.---------------In the latter half, C2C's investigative reporter Cheryll Jones presented her interview with Adam Berry, one of the first to blend research of both the psychological and the supernatural worlds. He shared his research on the Other Side, the intersections between grief, death, and afterlife communication, and the importance of humanizing ghosts and understanding their point of view. "I believe that if I use the right equipment, the right techniques, I can communicate with the dead," he told Cheryll, adding that near-death experiences and dream visitations lend further evidence to the idea that our consciousness continues after death. His focus has been on ghosts or earthbound spirits who may have unfinished business, which keeps them lingering around. For these spirits, "we can see human traits and their wants and needs that mirror our own," Berry continued. He described a case where a person lived in a house that was formerly home to two Polish immigrants who had passed away and were haunting rooms in the basement. It turned out the spirits were disturbed by renovations being done in the house, but once it was explained to them, they reached an understanding. In a case in Florida, children were seeing ghostly activity, and Berry and his team learned that a previous homeowner had died of mold exposure and was trying to warn the current inhabitants. He also talked about how spirits often say there are no words to describe what the afterlife is like, which be can be frustrating for us on the earth plane. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

When nine-year-old George Weyerhaeuser went missing, his family panicked. Kidnappings weren't commonplace, but in 1935, wealthy families were on guard for them. The Great Depression was in full swing, and just a few years earlier, the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby captured the nation's attention. So, when the Weyerhaeuser's son didn't make it home for lunch, they feared the worst. And now for a note about our process. For this episode, Brandi copy and pasted from the best sources on the web. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Sept. 10 Recent data shows tourism in West Virginia continues to grow by leaps and bounds…the Mountain State's forest products industry generates $3.2 billion a year…and, thinking of digging ginseng? The medicinal herb has many uses, but Forestry wants to make sure you follow the rules...on today's daily304. #1 – From THE GAZETTE-MAIL – West Virginia's tourism industry continues to grow year over year, according to West Virginia Department of Tourism data revealed at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce's annual business summit recently at The Greenbrier Resort. The data show West Virginia tourism-related content received more than 7 billion impressions in 2022 — more than doubling 2021 numbers. Visitor spending generated more than $754 million in tax revenue for the state that same year. “We have the newest national park in 2022 and West Virginia was the only state to get on every major travel list,” Chamber President and CEO Tricia Ball said. “CNN named us as one of the most underrated travel destinations. USA Today named us a top family destination and Lovely Planet ranked us as the No. 2 travel region ranking only behind Iceland.” According to the West Virginia Department of Tourism, the industry accounts for about 44,000 jobs across the state and 21,000 job openings are projected within the next few years. West Virginia's beautiful, forested mountains make it the second-leading hardwood state in the country, ranked third nationally by percentage of forested land. The forest products industry—which is made up of loggers, sawmills, dry kilns, veneer plants and furniture and rustic rail fence producers—generates $3.2 billion for the state economy every year and employs more than 30,000 people in highly skilled and technical positions. Companies such as AHF Products, Gat Creek, Weyerhaeuser and Columbia Forest Products, among others, make use of the state's 12 million acres of forestland and 75 billion board feet of timber inventory in an industry that reaches all 55 counties. The promise of expansion, sustainability and an already skilled workforce positions West Virginia as a critical provider of hardwoods as more and more companies focus on utilizing sustainable products, according to Eric Carlson, executive director of the West Virginia Forestry Association. Carlson said he would also like to see more secondary and finish manufacturing investments and new products, as well as innovation in harvesting equipment, develop in the Mountain State. “We have seen great cooperation with the state's economic development team to date, but we also need private equity investment to modernize the entire supply chain,” he says. “Like many businesses, it takes years to recoup the initial investment, and market demand for products is crucial.” Read more: https://wvexecutive.com/fundamental-forest-products/ #3 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Ginseng season is underway in West Virginia and runs through Nov. 30 Wild ginseng has been an ingredient in Appalachian culture, as well as medicinal folklore, for generations. West Virginia 'seng diggers have been looking to make money from the golden root for nearly 200 years. It has been used for centuries in North America and Asia for its purported medicinal properties. According to traditional folklore, ginseng roots are used in teas, soups, and medicines to treat sickness, increase vitality, relieve mental and physical fatigue, and prolong life. The West Virginia Division of Forestry closely monitors the harvesting of ginseng to protect ginseng supplies for the future. If you're a ginseng digger, consult (and heed!) the rules and regulations posted at wvforestry.com/ginseng-program. The site includes resources such as lists of West Virginia ginseng dealers and weigh stations. Cees de Jager is the President and CEO of the Softwood Lumber Board for Canada and the United States. Starting his forest products industry career with MacMillan Bloedel in 1995, Cees progressed through sales, marketing and leadership roles within the company, and later, with Weyerhaeuser. In 2002, Cees founded Hunter Consulting International a full-service consultancy specializing in forest products and building materials. The company quickly established itself as a leader in its field – delivering award winning and results oriented market development and promotion programs in North American and internationally. In 2008, Cees was engaged to lead the Binational Softwood Lumber Council (BSLC) and took on the additional responsibility of Chief Marketing Officer for the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) after it was established in 2012. In December of 2018, Cees was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the SLB. Through his leadership roles with these two organizations, Cees' efforts to increase demand for softwood lumber-based building systems have delivered considerable results. SLB investments have generated more than 6 billion board feet of incremental demand for softwood lumber in the United States, helping shift the market preference from carbon intensive materials to sustainable wood products. Thanks in large part to the efforts of the BSLC and SLB, wood is becoming the material of choice in market segments not previously captured by the industry including multi-family and non-residential construction.
Weyerhaeuser owns more than 12 million acres of timberland across the U.S. The logging company is the biggest timber owner in Oregon. Weyerhaeuser says its trees remove about 14 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year, The Wall Street Journal reported. And the logging firm is using those numbers to venture into the carbon offset market while still planning to increase lumber production. Ryan Dezember has covered the company for The Wall Street Journal and joins us with details of his reporting.
On May 18, 1980, at 8:32 AM local time, a major explosive eruption took place at a volcano in southwest Washington State. After months of earthquakes and smaller eruptions, Mt. St. Helens exploded. Over 1,000 feet of mountain was gone in just a few moments. And 57 people quickly died as hot volcanic ash, mudslides, and a fast-moving, incredibly hot cloud of death and destruction tore through miles of forest. Why didn't many of these people heed warnings that a deadly explosion was imminent? Today we look into what geothermal activity led up to this eruption, how various government agencies, private companies, and everyday people reacted to months of conflicting reports, how volcanos are formed, why the explode, and much more!
