A conversation with Sulene Fleming - soulful singer who has featured on a vast array of soul, funk and house tracks and live shows including with my radio show regulars Stone Foundation, The Brand New Heavies, Incognito and Citrus Sun , who were in Japan for live shows at Blue Note Tokyo in July 2023. A ray of sunshine herself Fleming shares what she loves about singing and performing live plus enjoying quiet moments in life with a musical family.

Sulene is an accomplished songwriter, producer, performer, and composer from Cape Town who's one of the most creative New Yorkers that I know. When I decided on featuring South Africa in this season, I knew it'd be important to explore the country considerably; especially since I've never been there before. One of the earliest talks I had for this season was the one you're about to hear; where my friend Sulene teaches me about what it was like to grow up in South Africa and how her experiences there still impact her today.

Award-winning musician, composer, and music producer, Chris Querido, is back after a 2-year hiatus. He debuted under the stage name, QUERIDO, in 2019 with a slick synth-pop song "For Tonight" featuring Amy May Roux, and the song raked in hundreds of thousands of streams. She's a composer from South Africa that now calls Brooklyn her home. Along with being a talented songwriter, she's also an incredible performer who's played with Nate Ruess, Betty Who and LPX.
