Van der Waal deed promotieonderzoek in de filosofie naar reproductieve rechtvaardigheid en obstetrisch geweld, oftewel grensoverschrijdend gedrag tijdens de bevalling. Vander Warner first picked up the guitar at age ten and began taking lessons from Tim Martin through middle school and his junior year of high school. After a few early band attempts, he joined Relinquish (2009–2010) and later Savannah Shoulders (2010–2012), all while playing regularly in church.Following a few years away from performing, Vander rediscovered his passion for music after moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he began playing in church again and later joined the country band Rebels Fox. 41 South African men and women were among about 1,000 human trafficking victims who made a dramatic escape in Southeast Asia the past week. In this interview with BizNews, Emma van der Walt, the Founder of Brave to Love, the Counter Trafficking NGO that is working to bring them home, tells Chris Steyn how they were lured to Thailand with false job promises, forcibly transported across the border into Myanmar, and held inside the KK Park scamming compound where they were trained to conduct online romance, cryptocurrency and investment scams. “…And then people start investing and once they're investing they lose all their money because it's fake cryptocurrency sites and…it is definitely, I believe a weapon of war that is targeting specific groups for financial war…” Van der Walt says some of the victims were badly assaulted, while some were even raped. Following their escape, one group of South Africans was also held hostage by corrupt military officials - and three other victims are in prison for overstaying the visas. “They are victims of trafficking, but these mafia groups work with the military in Myanmar and have actually given them over to the corrupt officials.”

Nog voordat we aan alle terugblikken beginnen, kijkt de Tour de France alvast vooruit. Eerder deze week werden de parcoursen van de Ronde van Frankrijk voor mannen en vrouwen geopenbaard. Aan de hand daarvan viel er genoeg nieuws te rapen en dat komt allemaal aan bod in de nieuwste aflevering van de WielerFlits Podcast!Het peloton is op vakantie, maar dat geldt niet voor onze verslaggevers Maxim en Youri. Ze hebben de tijd genomen om de Tour-parcoursen onder de loep te nemen. Ze analyseren beide routes uitgebreid en doen een aantal opvallende vaststellingen. Zo zagen ze beiden dat de toprenners niet veel animo hadden om naar de presentatie in Parijs af te reizen, vindt Youri het parcours bij de mannen zelfs wat flets, en stipt Maxim aan dat het merendeel van de etappes relatief kort is. Het hoogtepunt is de dubbele finish op Alpe d'Huez, al is dat eigenlijk niet helemaal waar.Ook kwamen onze verslaggevers tot de conclusie dat er voor sprinters én renners zoals Mathieu van der Poel niet veel eer te behalen valt in de komende editie. Youri gooit vervolgens meteen de knuppel in het hoenderhok. Hij zou niet verbaasd zijn als MVDP besluit om de Tour een jaar over te slaan en zich na het klassieke voorjaar volledig op het mountainbiken te richten. Maxim plaatst daar de kanttekening bij dat zijn ploeg dan wel eerst een tweede naamsponsor zal moeten hebben én dat een deelname aan de Vuelta a España mogelijk een uitdaging kan zijn. Van der Poel reed die wedstrijd nog nooit.Al met al zijn beide mannen het er na een grondige analyse wel over eens dat het parcours van de Tour de France Femmes hen enthousiaster maakt dan die van de mannen. Daarin is de kans overigens wel levensgroot dat we Unibet Rose Rockets terug gaan zien. Precies een jaar geleden stelden we in de WielerFlits Podcast nog dat het de grootste flauwekul was dat we het van origine Nederlandse team nu al in de Tour zouden terugzien, maar verschillende factoren hebben ervoor gezorgd dat ze een wildcard bijna niet kunnen missen. Bij MVRDV is de afgelopen vijf jaar onderzoek gedaan naar de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot van gebouwen. Daaruit heeft het bureau verschillende strategieën en tools ontwikkeld die het graag in de branche wil delen. Een gesprek met architecten Sanne van der Burgh en Boudewijn Thomas van MVRDV.Poster: MVRDV Carbon GuidelinesTool: CarbonSpace by MVRDVBij MVRDV staan Sanne van der Burgh en Boudewijn Thomas aan het hoofd van de afdeling MVRDV NEXT, waarbij dat laatste een afkorting is voor New Experimental Technologies. Het is de afdeling waar het parametrisch ontwerpen op het bureau steeds een stap verder gebracht wordt en waar momenteel ook de nieuwste toepassingen van AI worden getest. Maar vijf jaar geleden is daar ook gestart met een onderzoek naar de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot van gebouwen. Dat startte met hoe dat het beste te meten is, waarbij het eigen portfolio is doorgerekend, en eindigde met het vaststellen van de strategieën hoe de uitstoot stapsgewijs is te verlagen.In de podcast vertellen Sanne en Boudewijn in detail over wat ze allemaal geleerd hebben. Enkele opvallende bevindingen: een grote uitkraging, zoals bij het woongebouw aan het Westerpark in Amsterdam, of een grillige vorm, zoals bij Valley ook in Amsterdam verhoogt de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot maar met 3%. Fundamenteler zijn de keuzes rond de hoofddraagconstructie en de grootte van de kelder.Uit hun onderzoek kwam uiteindelijk naar voren dat er een relatie is tussen het gewicht van een gebouw en de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot ervan. Hoe zwaarder een gebouw, hoe hoger de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot, en vice versa. De eerste strategie binnen het bureau is daarom nu om het gewicht van gebouwen te verminderen. Tot 2030 wil het bureau iedere maand zijn portfolio 3 kg / m2 lichter maken. De inzet op biobased materialisering is daarin belangrijk. Net als een streven om ondergrondse parkeergarages te verkleinen en waar mogelijk achterwege te laten.Een tweede strategie binnen het bureau is om vanaf de start van het ontwerpproces te rekenen aan de materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot. Voor de eerste berekeningen bij de start van het ontwerpproces heeft het een eigen tool ontwikkeld – CarbonSpace – dat nu door iedereen gratis te gebruiken is. In deze tool wordt gewerkt met realistische aannames rond de materialisering van gebouwen, waardoor ontwerpers uitgedaagd worden het ontwerp op een fundamenteel niveau door te denken. Kan er meer van het bestaande hergebruikt worden? Kan er meer biobased uitgevoerd worden? Kan het gebouw niet toch iets kleiner? Is die grote kelder wel echt nodig? Bij het ontwerp van een bedrijvenpark rond AI in Heilbron heeft het bureau gewerkt met carbon budgetten voor de verschillende gebouwen. Het betekende in de praktijk dat er naast een kostencalculatie ook een materiaalgebonden CO2-calculatie meeliep met het ontwerpproces. Op die manier kon op beide gestuurd worden. Het is een manier van werken die het bureau vaker wil toepassen.Denkend vanuit materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot is het vanzelfsprekend om alles wat er al is zoveel mogelijk her te gebruiken. Het beeld bij deze podcast, gemaakt door fotograaf Xia Zhi, toont het Shenzhen Women & Children's Center, waarbij  MVRDV erin geslaagd is om een bestaand casco her te gebruiken en zo enorm veel tijdwinst te behalen maar ook enorm veel materiaalgebonden CO2-uitstoot te besparen. Deze podcast wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door AGC. Halverwege de podcast vertelt Anton Peters van AGC over hun Project Volta waarbij de CO2-uitstoot bij de productie van glas met maar liefst 74% wordt gereduceerd.

Professor Sander van der Linden explores the impact of misinformation and how to prevent its spread within the general public. His work as Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab focuses on the origins of "fake news" and its role in societal divisions.  In this conversation with Will Hutton, he discusses his research into proactive strategies like "pre-bunking" to build defences against manipulation through misinformation. His lab has created a game called Get Bad News aimed at building psychological resistance against online misinformation. By strategically and ethically bringing the right facts to the surface, he was able to rebuild trust and reframe the conversation. The result? In just 18 months, that once-mocked dry suit became the market leader. That experience converted Patrick for life, proving that this science had the power to turn even the most difficult situations around.Walking the Ethical Tightrope: Persuasion vs. ManipulationPatrick was crystal clear on a point that I know concerns many of us: the fine line between ethical persuasion and outright manipulation. He offered a brilliant litmus test. Unethical persuasion, like the shoe salesperson lying about having the "last pair," involves importing falsehoods into a situation to pressure a decision. It might create a short-term win, but it inevitably leads to long-term disaster once the deceit is discovered.Ethical persuasion, on the other hand, is about bringing naturally occurring truths to the surface. If the TV you want truly is the last one in stock, you as the customer want to be told that information to make an informed choice. The key is honesty. Ethical influence is not about creating false scarcity or pressure; it's about highlighting genuine facts that help someone make a better, easier decision that serves their own interests.The Three 'Cancers' of Unethical InfluenceGoing a step further, Patrick shared the devastating long-term costs of fostering a dishonest culture, which he powerfully described as "three cancers." The first is the stress it places on employees, most of whom dislike being asked to lie, leading to more sick days. The second is a much higher staff turnover, as good people will seek employment elsewhere, creating a huge cost in hiring and training.The third cancer is perhaps the most insidious: the only people who don't mind being unethical are, well, unethical people. These are not the employees you want, as their dishonesty won't be limited to your customers; it will extend to side deals and stealing office supplies.
