In today's episode, Alan shares how a rare open Saturday—spent hiking into the Colorado mountains to fly-fish—quickly turned into another to-do list. He realized that our most life-giving pursuits (hobbies) are constantly at risk of becoming tasks we “have to” check off. In this conversation, Alan unpacks why hobbies are essential to flourishing, offers a framework for rediscovering them, and gives practical steps to reclaim joy, creativity, and rest in the midst of our busy “have-to” lives. What You'll Learn: Why Hobbies Matter: How leisure activities serve as mental rest, spark creativity, and renew passion for work and family. Focal Practices: The power of “idle,” present-moment activities that reconnect you to what truly matters. Benefits of Hobbies: From distraction of weighty issues to replenishment cycles that boost productivity. Rediscovery vs. Discovery: Tips for uncovering the hobbies you loved as a kid—or stumbling on new ones today. Practical Steps: How to schedule your first hobby session in two weeks—no guilt, no strings attached. Key Takeaways: Hobbies are “get-to” activities in a “have-to” world. Even large organizations credit “white-space” time for breakthroughs. Simple focal practices (gardening, evening walks, hammocking) anchor joy and presence. Your work, relationships, and well-being depend on carving out hobby time. Action Challenge: Block off a 2-hour window in your calendar this week for your rediscovered hobby—whether it's fly-fishing, woodworking, dancing, or simply sitting in a hammock—and notice how you feel afterward. “There's something I find strangely moving about the ‘Extracts' section of Moby Dick—before we even get into the text—by virtue of the attention that has been paid to the whale,” writer Wyatt Mason says in this episode of The World in Time. “It's astonishing as you're reading through. It's proof of two kinds of life. It's proof of the life of the creature itself. But it's also proof of the life of the mind and the attention that we pay—meaning, we readers and we writers pay—through time to this creature, which is very different from the elephant because most of us never see one in our lifetimes. If we're fortunate, we might, but for the most part, no. So they reside or they live in texts.” With this episode, the second in an intermittent series on the literature, history, and science of the sea, The World in Time launches onto the waters of Moby Dick. The episode begins with excerpts from a pair of conversations Lewis Lapham recorded during his final years as host. First, Lapham speaks with Richard J. King about his 2019 book, Ahab's Rolling Sea: A Natural History of Moby-Dick. In the second excerpted interview, recorded in 2022, Lapham talks with Aaron Sachs about Up From the Depths: Herman Melville, Lewis Mumford, and Rediscovery in Dark Times. The episode concludes with a new conversation. Wyatt Mason and Donovan Hohn talk about the first time they read Moby Dick, about teaching Melville's novel to incarcerated students enrolled in the Bard Prison Initiative, and then, like a pair of sub-sub-librarians, they swim through two curious documents, “Etymologies” and “Extracts,” that precede the famous first sentence of Melville's tragic Leviathan American novel.

A Note from James:So the question is, I really feel that in order to get not good at something, but great at something, you have to be obsessed. You can't just wake up and decide to be obsessed—it has to be deep, almost irrational. Obsession is like addiction. It throws your life off balance, and yet... there's this insane joy when you enter the subculture of your obsession and get better at it.I've seen this recently in crypto. I saw it in chess in Norway, commenting on what might've been the best chess tournament ever. And I felt it again when I sat down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam from New In Chess. We didn't just talk about chess. We talked about obsession, aging, failing at something you love, and trying to find your place in a subculture that's moved on without you.If you care about learning, obsession, or just love chess, you're going to get something out of this episode. Dirk and I recorded this in Stavanger, Norway. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did being a part of it.Episode Description:What does it mean to return to your first love after nearly 30 years away? In this special crossover episode, James Altucher sits down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, editor of New In Chess magazine, to reflect on his lifelong (and recently rekindled) obsession with chess. They explore how obsession shapes mastery, why wisdom sometimes trumps raw skill, and what it's like to try and reclaim an old identity as an older version of yourself.James opens up about losing games to kids half his age, obsessively chasing improvement, and why it still might be okay to fail—as long as the journey is honest. From teenage blitz tournaments to dinner with Garry Kasparov, from neuroscience to narrative writing, this episode is as much about how to live as it is about how to play. What You'll Learn:Why obsession is both a superpower and a dangerHow James approaches relearning chess after a 27-year breakWhat changes in the brain as we age—and how to work with itThe surprising ways chess opens doors in life, business, and writingWhy storytelling and vulnerability matter more than "success" aloneTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] The Power of Obsession[01:00] Travel Tales: Norway and Crypto[03:00] Chess Commentary and Podcasting with Dirk Jan[05:00] Dirk Jan's Intro on James Altucher[08:00] James' Curiosity and Love of Learning[10:00] Starting Chess at 17 and Becoming Addicted[13:00] Losing to Irena Krush and Facing Limits[17:00] Chess, Ego, and Real-World Consequences[22:00] How Chess Skills Apply to Business Problems[26:00] Writing as a Path Through Vulnerability[33:00] Returning to Chess: Memory, Aging, and Rediscovery[37:00] Eric Rosen, Coaches, and Mental Decline[41:00] Pattern Recognition vs. Calculation[47:00] What Makes Chess Players Unique[50:00] Interviewing Kasparov, Judit Polgar, Hikaru[56:00] Obsession and the Myth of Talent[58:00] Will the Book Get Written?[60:00] The James Altucher Invitational[62:00] Reflecting on the JourneyAdditional Resources:

"He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions." How are we supposed to understand the phrase "merciless Indian Savages" in the Declaration of Independence? In this episode, expert in American Indian history Prof. Matthew Kruer (U. of Chicago) gives a thorough analysis of indigenous-colonial relations from the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) through the Declaration of Independence (1776). Topics include the following: -The enormous diversity of the 574 indigenous nations recognized by the US Federal government -The Great Dying, which led to the death of 90% of the indigenous population of North America due to war, disease, and enslavement -The complexity and size of indigenous urban centers and trade networks -The consequences of the Seven Years' War (or the French and Indian War), which ended in 1763, for native peoples and colonists -The Proclamation of 1763, which demarcated settler country and Indian country -Pontiac's War (1764) and settler-Indian violence -The rise of the Black Boys, arguably the first violent anti-British imperial militia -Dunmore's War (1774), the conflict between Mingo and Shawnee against the Virginia Militia -Indigenous reactions to the Declaration The episode ends with a reflection on the tension between the ideals expressed in the Declaration and the characterization of native peoples as "merciless Indian savages." The books discussed in the episode are: Kruer, Matthew. Time of Anarchy: Indigenous Power and the Crisis of Colonialism in Early America. (2021, Harvard UP). Blackhawk, Ned. The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of US History. (2023, Yale UP).

What happens when we lose our sense of purpose? In this deeply personal conversation, Martin sits down with his friend Rockstar Turtle (Ivan) who opens up about his ongoing journey of self-discovery, breaking harmful cycles, and finding himself again after feeling burnt out and lost. The raw vulnerability on display is powerful as Ivan shares his experiences breaking free from porn addiction, discovering the healing power of journaling, and learning to overcome generational patterns—particularly within Hispanic culture where mental health struggles are often dismissed with phrases like "just get over it." Their honest dialogue about therapy challenges the stigma many men face when seeking help, acknowledging their own past resistance while recognizing how valuable professional support can be for mental wellbeing. What makes this conversation so relatable is how it balances the heaviness of personal struggles with practical steps toward growth. Ivan details how meditation, breathing techniques, physical exercise, and an upcoming social media detox have become essential tools in his journey. His determination to become more confident in his words, to let his actions speak louder than talk, and to rediscover his artistic passion resonates with anyone who's ever felt stuck or disconnected from their purpose. The friendship between these two men provides a beautiful backdrop to this conversation, demonstrating how crucial supportive relationships are when navigating life's challenges. As Ivan prepares for a month of intentional self-work and reflection, his vulnerability serves as permission for listeners to examine their own lives and consider where they might need to press reset.Need support with your mental health? Remember that seeking help is an act of courage, not weakness. Take that deep breath, reach out to someone you trust, and know that growth—though challenging—brings the freedom to become who you're truly meant to be.

In this episode of The Creative Podcast, we sit down with filmmaker and entrepreneur Nur Niaz about his transition from commercial directing to building a successful YouTube channel and online business. Nur shares how political instability and economic challenges in Kazakhstan pushed him to pivot careers, leading to newfound creative and growing financial freedom as an artist. He discusses the struggle of balancing artistry with business, overcoming self-doubt, and redefining his identity beyond traditional filmmaking. Nur also reflects on the importance of community, valuing friendships outside of the creative industry while seeking a network of like-minded individuals. He shares how YouTube became both a business and a creative outlet, allowing him to monetize his content through digital products and ads while shifting to a more exploratory, documentary-style approach to filmmaking. He opens up about his struggles with depression, the role of therapy, and how honest communication with his wife helped him navigate his lowest moments. The conversation also sparks reflection in Carlo, making him question his own creative path and how to balance personal fulfillment with career evolution.Nur Niaz: Instagram | WebsiteCarlo: Instagram | WebsiteThe Creative Gap: Instagram | YoutubeSUPPORT THE PODCAST ON PATREON____________________________________________________⚙️ GEAR USED TO MAKE THIS PODCAST:Rodecaster Pro II: https://amzn.to/3RluSeVRode Podmic: https://amzn.to/3RpaR77Mic Stand: https://amzn.to/4caJUfiCamera 1: https://amzn.to/45h5E7bCamera 2: https://amzn.to/45g8iKxLight: https://amzn.to/3KK6XSt
