Matthew Xavier Corrigan, an artist who splits time between Cork and Dublin, released his debut solo album Beast of Changing on March 21. Written in reflection of a tempestuous season of change across Irish coastlines, centred on Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry, Myrtleville in Co. Cork and Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Beast of Changing follows a story of growth, of love lost and found, of crossing the threshold into dark, cold, saline water - of surrender. Themes of environmentalism and how we shape the coasts, of erosion and rising water, are woven throughout. Matthew Xavier Corrigan's debut album was cut to tape with a single collaborator, Mike Halls, over five days in Liverpool, the product of years of writing rendered in a few day's takes. After pushing to a more intimate and organic sound on the From ten, with love EP, the artist now goes deeper; covered in analog warmth and rich harmonies, delicately performed, taking inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Bill Callahan and Robin Pecknold. This renewed focus on analog warmth even comes out in the imagery; the press photos and album/single artwork were captured on expired film by Ronan Burke on vintage film cameras. Matthew talks about his former project Ghostking is Dead, why that came to an end, the Cork scene and working on festivals such as his own River Runs Round, Quarter Block Party, Quiet Lights and Sounds from a Safe Harbour, the story behind Beast of Changing, and lots more. Welcome to episode 2 of the Seven Deadly Sins challenge - PRIDE. This time the Groovers are spinning the Top Gun Soundtrack, Andy Shauf's Neon Skyline, Roger Waters' The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and 2Pac's All Eyez on Me.
It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season. Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes. In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something. Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk. Thank you for being with us in 2023! And we thank all of our guests for being so generous with their time and their hearts. All the best for 2024, and we can't wait to share Hidden Track Season 5 with you! Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Music: Doug Hoyer | Graphics: Shaun Friesen The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. Thank you for your support!
My fingers are in tons of pies! Hugh talked about songwriting from dusty notes, Monty Python animations, shooting music videos, piezo mics for guitars, creating sounds from voice memos, pushing through writer's block, and podcast editing for money. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Hugh Macdonald aka Fairhazel a British/South African singer songwriter, artist, and producer born in Brighton but raised in London, Cape Town and Paris. Hugh left Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2018 returning to London to work with Communion Music under the name Fairhazel, releasing his first single 7x7 in February 2018 to critical acclaim. Roisin O'Connor of The Independent described it as having "tender, whispering vocals that recall the likes of Villagers, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens”. Inspired by artists France Gall, Harry Nilsson and Andy Shauf among others, Fairhazel has established himself as a musical storyteller blurring the lines between fiction and true stories. At his Los Angeles studio, he works on creating all aspects of his music himself from songwriting to arrangement, production, and engineering. He also frequently produces and mixes music, primarily rock, folk, jazz, pop and soul. Although Fairhazel is a solo venture, a band often accompanies him at shows and he has opened for Agnes Obel, Banfi and Astræa. Recently he played Whispering Bob Harris's Under the Apple Tree, and featured thrice on the lineup of the Counting Crows Underwater Sunshine Festival. As well as the Fairhazel project, Hugh runs a monthly live music event with his wife, Danielle, soon to be growing into a day long monthly festival. Hugh and Danielle also direct, shoot and edit music videos for independent artists. I met Hugh back in 2019 when he came through Nashville at 21 years old and we did a live stream for our Youtube channel where Hugh wrote a song on the spot using lyrics from you Rockstars in the comments and everything was recorded on the Roswell Pro Audio Delphos and Colares mics. And Hugh has since worked with me a couple of years as the head videographer for our NAMM videos in Anaheim CA. Andy Shauf is no stranger to a good love song. You can hear songs of love in his critically acclaimed albums like “The Party” and “The Neon Skyline.” But on Andy's latest record, “Norm,” something's…off. What at first comes off as a set of tender love songs, later reveals a much more sinister side to his songwriting. Andy tells Tom about how true crime inspired his new album, what draws him to the darker side of love, what sobriety has done for his life and his music, and why he wanted to write from the perspective of God. New album - (1:59) Being drawn to dark themes - (4:02) Randy Newman story - (6:59) Sobriety - (9:22) Writing in the perspective of God - (15:43) Growing up in Saskatchewan and the church - (18:21)

Andrew and Nate discuss Andy Shauf's latest record “Norm” and whether it's a return to normal for Andy after his last two records.
Our first foray into Canadian folk music! Andy Shauf's The Neon Skyline is an amazing listen, and we dive deep into the narrative of a long night out on the town with old friends, exes, acquaintances and new discoveries.
Hablamos de uno de los narradores musicales más brillantes en la actualidad. Nadie escribe historias tan vívidas a través de sus canciones como Andy Shauf. Escuchar audio
At times, the protagonist of Andy Shauf's new album Norm might strike you as a charming, shambling sort of fellow. Norm likes getting high, he watches The Price Is Right, he's been known to lock his keys in his car, he seems excited when Halloween is coming up. Those moments all seem innocuous enough, and it's certainly easy to get lost in just how flat-out gorgeous the songs on this record are. But listening carefully, it starts to become clear that there's something a whole lot more sinister going on here. There's a lot to process and ponder. Andy gives you just enough detail that you can begin to put the plot's puzzle pieces together, but he also masterfully maintains a great deal of space in this story. It's a space where your imagination can wander, where you might find yourself reflecting on some big questions, and which becomes increasingly unsettling as the album unfolds. Andy's previous album-length narratives like The Party and The Neon Skyline have garnered him Juno Award nominations, and landed him on the Short List for the Polaris Music Prize. And although this is another beautiful-sounding, long-playing yarn... well, he's going in a dramatically different and darker direction with Norm. It's a bit like a chilling, slow-paced novel; or a sinister movie; or a true crime podcast that involves divine intervention. It's certainly an album like no other. Norm was released February 10th, 2023, via Anti- and Arts & Crafts. Originally from Estevan, Saskatchewan, Andy Shauf returned to the Canadian prairies in March of 2023 as part of an international album release tour. While preparing to play a big concert hall show at The Winspear Centre, he generously made space in his busy schedule to spend some time at CKUA's Edmonton studios - and he brought his guitar! In this episode, he shares intimate solo acoustic performances of two songs from Norm: "Halloween Store" and the album's title track. And in a wide-ranging conversation, he tells us all about the record; he relates how a scrapped disco album was part of the process; the way a borrowed synthesizer reinvigorated his songwriting, and fired his imagination for this project; what it's like to have gone from playing small clubs to concert halls in the matter of a few years; why a pop-up Halloween store in Regina, Saskatchewan, holds such special fascination for him; and how he considers himself a storyteller who happens to use music as his medium.
David Coleman, Gabbie Nirenburg, Juan Rodríguez and Joe Rivers take a look back at Dusk, the 1993 album by The The which signalled a change in direction and had an impressive list of collaborators. Plus, in light of a recent 10/10 review on noripcord.com for the latest Andy Shauf album, we ask whether any record can ever be truly deserving of a perfect score? We'd highly recommend you give Dusk a listen if you've never heard it before. It can be found on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/album/2l787tSnzSfpfvgPNsR5O2?si=aUBY_VTKRhixsAA2j0sfoQ
Religious imagery, small town ideals, and complicated relationships shape the work of Andy Shauf, a Canadian singer-songwriter. We discuss his interest in God as a concept and the new album Norm. Andy Shauf joins Reset ahead of his show in Chicago.
Today on Transmissions, we're joined by Saskatchewan-born songwriter Andy Shauf to discuss getting sober, God, and how these big topics relate to his latest album of introspective folk pop, Norm. Fans of his ‘70s-styled songcraft will still find lots to love here, but as we discuss, the production is deeply rooted in modern experimentation and the anything goes sonic possibilities of digital recording: “I like the way that records transport you. It doesn't mean you have to listen to a record and be transported to the past; you can use new technologies to transport you to somewhere else…if not the future, a present that exists somewhere else.” Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patreon supporters. We'll be back next Wednesday with a new episode featuring Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone of The Zombies.

To quote album art master and AD visual guru D. Norsen: “Dorothy Moskowitz might not be a household name but was a musician on two of the headiest albums I know: 1967's Vocal And Instrumental Ragas From South India on Folkways and 1968's United States of America on CBS.” Moskowitz is our guest this week on Transmissions. She joins us to discuss not only the pioneering psychedelia she made in the past with collaborators like Joe Byrd and Country Joe, but also her brand new album, coming out soon from Tompkins Square. It's called Under the Endless Sky, and it's credited to Dorothy Moskowitz & The United States of Alchemy. Working with Italian electronic composer Francesco Paolo Paladino and composer and writer Luca Chino Ferrari, it represents a new vision from the 83 year old artist, at once apocalyptic, vivid, and transcendent. Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patreon supporters. We'll be back next Wednesday with singer songwriter Andy Shauf.

A superbly gifted storyteller, Andy Shauf returns with a new concept album in February. His records unfold like books, with each song a chapter filled with nuance and vibrant characters. “Wasted On You” is the first track from the album “Norm,” which Shauf self-produced and plays all the instruments you hear.
As broadcast November 21, 2022 with plenty of Shondells magic and mania in tow! Tonight we mark this date in 1987 when Billy Idol bumped Tiffany off the top of the proverbial tree at #1, which is one of those things that just goes on & on. What is remarkable is that both artists had #1 hits with covers of previous hits by Tommy James & The Shondells (who you cannot escape & live forever). Great new tunes to cover in the first hour with a stellar album from Weyes Blood out Friday called And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, then we had lots of new singles and album announcements from Tennis, Andy Shauf, Cigs After Sex, and that also goes on & on. To finish the first hour, we highlighted FKJ's upcoming performance in Seoul at KBS Music Hall, which all goes down Monday Nov 28. Part 3 as per usual we are once again Poppin Off, with a highlight on the World Cup anthem collab between Nicki Minaj & MALUMA to start, then we had big new joints from Chance The Rapper, JP Saxe, and Dermot Kennedy to highlight as well. Part 4 of course we're taste testing our Fresh K Cuts, or new indie & bubbling under K-pop from right here on the peninsula, with SURL, Gwak Tae Poong, and ilbum being highlights there to wrap it up tight.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Tiffany – I Think We're Alone NowPhantom Youth – Stay & RunChristine & The Queens – Tu sais ce q'uil me fautHoney Dijon – La Femme FantastiqueTennis – One Night with the ValetBenny Sings – The World Part II (30:03)Cigarettes After Sex – PistolJoesef – Just Come Home with Me TonightPhoebe Bridgers – So Much WineAndy Shauf – Wasted On YouWeyes Blood – Children of the EmpireFKJ – Us (A Color Show)FKJ & Masego – Tadow Part III (64:00)Nicki Minaj with MALUMA & Myriam Fares – Tukoh TakaChance The Rapper feat King Promise – YAH KnowDermot Kennedy – One LifeFana Hues – floatCautious Clay – Lip ServiceJP Saxe – The Good PartsKelela – On The Run Part IV (93:35)ilbum – GoodbyeLim Haeum feat Wildberry – See you my friendHEEO – Destiny of ChallengeDIFF feat Nam Ji In – MASIJASURL – Aroundsweetch feat sooon – a u r o r aGwak Tae Poong – 후일담 Memory

Have you ever heard a song so good you didn't just admire the writer, but also envied the fact that they came up with it? In the most recent episode of the Soundfly podcast, Themes and Variation, Carter and Mahea are joined by pop artist and multi-instrumentalist, Sulene van der Walt to discuss the theme "Songs I Wish I'd Written." This time around, the discussion is anchored by selections from the catalogs of Andy Shauf, Rufus Wainwright, and Irving Berlin. Ok, so it's recorded on Sunday the 3rd of July, not the 4th. To be honest, the 4th of July is not a great holiday to pay tribute to on rock radio, anyway. SOOOO......let's just play another 2 hour set of great rock music, shall we? With artists like Lindsey Buckingham, The Black Keys, Pink Martini, Andy Shauf, Chocolate Genius Incorporated, Sugarloaf, Gordon Lightfoot, Supertramp and MANY others, it'll be a rockin' 4th, on the 3rd or any other day! Enjoy!

As broadcast September 6, 2021. We remember on this date in 2011 when PJ Harvey became the very first artist to win the Mercury Prize twice, which she did 10 years prior to then. After that, there are huge heavy hitters out over the weekend, so we take you through them for the full two hours, with Danno flying solo for the totality of the show due to getting vaccinated Monday morning, so we kept the lovely Yejin away out of an abundance of caution.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)PJ Harvey – Good FortuneLittle Simz feat Obongjayar – Point & KillKIRBY – Coconut OilKanye West – Believe What I SayAnderson.Paak – Fire In The SkyPriya Ragu – Lockdown Part II (30:03)Asgeir – The Sky Is Painted Grey TodayAndy Shauf – Spanish On The BeachJulien Baker – Ringside (Gordi remix)Thurston Moore feat Bernie Sanders – Feel It In Your GutsBachelor & Jay Som feat Palehound – I See It NowDivino Nino – Drive (edit)CASTLEBEAT – Into Part III (60:31)Post Malone & Swae Lee - SunflowerOlivia Rodrigo - Deja VuTom Grennan - Don't Break The HeartCharli XCX - Good OnesGriff - One NightKacey Musgraves – justifiedSurfaces feat Thomas Rhett – C'est La ViePart IV (90:34)HONNE - COMING HOME (ft. When Jordan Paul, now known as Ellis Meek released ‘Strange,' there was no indication it would turn out to be a quarantine anthem, with a spot on BBC in the South West, and in Le Soundtrack's ‘Best New Canadian Indie Releases.' The track is a call for compassion and empathy, and feels as though it was a direct reaction to the week of April it was released on; just as a global pandemic was peeking its head out to the whole world. In actuality, it was written when Jordan Paul was 17—a young empath just coming to terms with the often dark nature of things, and the fear-based responses people can resort to in lieu of love and connection. October 30th's follow-up “Archetype X” only furthers the singer-songwriter's sentiments, as Paul's oft-layered lyricism is pointedly laid bare in a song that explores the act of journeying inwards for therapeutic release. “Archetype X” was written in a self-processed act of therapy, and comes as the ultimate evolution in Hamiltonian Jordan Paul's distinctive musical style. The song boasts notes of delicate and exploratory alt. folk/rock, taking an expansive journey well beyond its subtle indie-folk roots. After Paul belts out the final refrain in the electrified coda, “Archetype X” fades into a chattering of hazy distortion and thrumming space echo—the welcome and careful calm to ease us back to reposeful contemplation before the song fades into the ether. “Jordan Paul's voice shines like an otherworldly, sophisticated diamond, hypnotic and sure. And with his newest single, he gives us another taste of something we can't get enough of.” Brent Jensen, radio personality, author, and host of No Sleep ‘til Sudbury “Archetype X” is the third release of 2020 from Jordan Paul, recorded at Jonathan Anderson's (Andy Shauf, Aidan Knight, Said the Whale) Protection Island Studios in Maple Ridge, BC, and mastered by Noah Mintz (Marcy Playground, Broken Social Scene, Matt Mays). We'll hear Ellis Meek's song, Archetype X, during the podcast. Find more of his music on Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms. Follow his musical journal on Facebook and Instagram.
