This Day in Legal History: Georgia v. McCollumOn June 18, 1992, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in Georgia v. McCollum, 505 U.S. 42 (1992), holding that criminal defendants cannot use peremptory challenges to exclude jurors on the basis of race. This decision extended the logic of Batson v. Kentucky—which barred prosecutors from racially discriminatory jury strikes—to defense attorneys, ensuring both sides are bound by the Equal Protection Clause. The case involved white defendants in Georgia who sought to remove Black jurors, prompting the state to challenge the defense's strikes as racially biased. The Court, in a 7–2 opinion written by Justice Blackmun, reasoned that racial discrimination in jury selection, regardless of the source, undermines public confidence in the justice system and the constitutional guarantee of a fair trial. It emphasized that the courtroom is not a private forum and that all participants—prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges—must adhere to constitutional principles.Importantly, the decision addressed the state action requirement, acknowledging that while defense attorneys are not state actors in the traditional sense, their participation in the jury selection process is conducted under judicial supervision and is thus attributable to the state. This broadened the scope of equal protection enforcement in criminal proceedings. The ruling was a major step toward eradicating racial bias in the judicial process, reinforcing that justice must not only be impartial but also be perceived as such. By holding defense attorneys to the same standard as prosecutors, the Court ensured that the integrity of jury selection is preserved across the board. The decision also highlighted the evolving understanding of the judiciary's role in preventing systemic discrimination, even in adversarial settings.Georgia v. McCollum remains a critical precedent in both constitutional law and criminal procedure, illustrating the Court's commitment to fairness in one of the most fundamental aspects of the legal system—trial by jury.U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick expanded a prior injunction, blocking the Trump administration's passport policy that restricted transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals from obtaining passports reflecting their gender identity. Kobick found that the State Department's revised policy—mandating passports list only “biological” sex at birth—likely violated the Fifth Amendment by discriminating on the basis of sex and reflecting irrational bias.Initially, the injunction applied only to six plaintiffs, but Kobick's ruling now grants class-action status, halting enforcement of the policy nationwide. The policy stems from an executive order signed by Trump after returning to office in January 2025, directing all federal agencies to recognize only two sexes and abandon the gender marker flexibility introduced under the Biden administration in 2022.The ruling marks a legal setback for the administration's effort to reimpose binary sex classifications across federal documents. The ACLU, representing the plaintiffs, called it a critical win for transgender rights. The White House condemned the ruling as judicial overreach. The broader case remains ongoing.US judge blocks Trump passport policy targeting transgender people | ReutersEducational toy company Learning Resources petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take up its challenge to President Donald Trump's tariffs before lower court appeals conclude. The company argues that Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs is unconstitutional and economically damaging, citing a May 29 district court ruling that found the tariffs illegal. That decision, however, is currently stayed pending appeal.Learning Resources' CEO, Rick Woldenberg, warned that delaying Supreme Court review could cost American businesses up to $150 billion due to ongoing tariff-related costs. He described the tariffs as a hidden tax and accused the government of forcing importers to act as involuntary tax collectors. Two federal courts have already ruled against Trump's interpretation of IEEPA, a law historically used for targeted sanctions, not general trade policy. The administration defends the tariffs as a legal response to national emergencies like trade imbalances and drug trafficking, though critics say the justification is legally thin and economically harmful. While rare, the Supreme Court has expedited cases of national significance in the past, such as Biden's student loan forgiveness plan. A key appeals court hearing on Trump's tariff authority is scheduled for July 31.Small business seeks early Supreme Court review of Trump's tariffs | ReutersA federal judge has also temporarily blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a new Department of Defense policy that would cap indirect cost reimbursements to universities at 15%. The move came in response to a lawsuit filed by 12 research institutions—including MIT and Johns Hopkins—as well as major academic associations. These groups argued that the cap violated existing federal regulations and congressional intent. The Department of Defense had framed the policy as a cost-saving measure, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claiming it could save up to $900 million annually. However, universities rely on indirect cost reimbursements to fund infrastructure, staff, and equipment that support research across multiple projects—not just the ones directly funded. The ruling by Judge Brian Murphy, a Biden appointee, mirrors earlier judicial blocks of similar funding cuts proposed by the NIH and Department of Energy. A hearing is scheduled for July 2 to determine whether a longer-term injunction should be issued. The case highlights growing legal resistance to the administration's broader push to reduce federal spending on scientific research.US judge blocks Defense Department from slashing federal research funding | ReutersThe U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's law banning puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender minors in a 6–3 decision that sets a national precedent and effectively greenlights similar restrictions in over 20 states. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Roberts concluded that the law neither classifies based on sex nor targets transgender status, and thus only required rational basis review—not heightened constitutional scrutiny. The Court accepted Tennessee's framing of the law as neutral and medically cautious, not discriminatory, citing European health policy shifts and purported uncertainty around gender-affirming care as justification.Critics, including the Court's liberal bloc, argued the law does in fact discriminate based on sex and gender identity by banning medical treatment only when it aims to affirm a transgender identity. Justice Sotomayor, in dissent, emphasized that the law's language and application plainly hinge on a minor's “sex as assigned at birth,” drawing troubling parallels to older jurisprudence that permitted covert forms of discrimination under the guise of neutrality. The ruling marks a major rollback of legal protections for transgender youth, ignoring years of precedent that increasingly recognized transgender identity as a constitutionally protected status. By lowering the scrutiny threshold and deferring to legislative “uncertainty,” the Court provided a road map for states to restrict gender-affirming care through general, non-explicitly discriminatory language. The majority's refusal to engage with medical consensus or the real-world impact on transgender youth reveals a troubling judicial posture: one that values legislative deference over individual rights, even when the stakes include physical and psychological harm to a vulnerable group.Supreme Court Upholds Curbs on Treatment for Transgender Minors This is a public episode. Going viral might get you noticed. But consistency is what makes you unforgettable. And no one proves that better than Alix Earle, a TikTok star who turned daily “Get Ready With Me” videos into a personal media empire. In this episode, we're pulling marketing lessons from Alix's rise with the help of Elizabeth Strickert, Director of Content Marketing at A-LIGN.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from staying consistent, growing with (not past) your audience, and making content that's actually fun to create.About our guest, Elizabeth StrickertElizabeth Strickert is Director of Content Marketing at tech-enabled cybersecurity and compliance company A-LIGN. There, Elizabeth is leading content, thought leadership, comms & customer marketing. She has overhauled their SEO program, resulting in top 10 ranking for high-difficulty, high-volume keywords. She also led the creation of an annual benchmark report, reaching 3 million+ impressions. She leverages internal thought leaders for social media, videos, webinars, speaking opps and written content. She previously served as Director of Communications & Content at Ekos and Marketing Communications Manager at Passport. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Alix Earle:Consistency builds credibility. Viral moments come and go, but Alix Earle's staying power lies in her relentless consistency. No shortcuts, just commitment. It's a reminder that content success isn't just about innovation; it's about endurance. Elizabeth says, “Alix, not only did she get rewarded from doing that, she was on TikTok for a long time before she really got big. But even since making it, she's still posting multiple times a day. She is just there doing it, grinding. All the time.” In B2B, the same rule applies: keep posting, keep showing up.Honor your origin story. Growth doesn't mean forgetting who got you there. Alix still makes the content that first drew her audience in, while smartly layering in new formats. In B2B, you must evolve, but stay grounded. Elizabeth reminds us, “You gotta remember who got you here. You gotta remember your core customer base. You gotta remember the people who you know are…the ones that pay the bills.” Make sure to have a balance, especially as you scale.Find the fun and show it. Audiences can feel when you're enjoying what you're creating. It's what makes content magnetic. Alix's success didn't just come from consistency, it came from joy. She leaned into the formats that were fun for her, and her audience leaned in too. Elizabeth puts it plainly: “When someone is excited about the things they're making, it automatically makes them more interesting. And we just have to lean on that.” In B2B, it's easy to default to polished, sanitized messaging. But the real key is letting your content creators tap into what actually excites them. If your team thinks it's boring, your audience will too.Quotes“ We think, B2B, it needs to be polished, it needs to be sanitized. But the story is the interesting part. That's where someone can relate to it. That's where somebody can get hooked in. That's why you care. And I think a lot of times we forget about that.”“We want B2B content to be polished. Sanitized. But the story — that's the interesting part. That's what people actually relate to. We forget that too often. The story is why people care.”“ I think it's good to be a consumer. As a marketer, you're putting content out in the world, you need to consume it. But…you don't need to be going to a B2B workshop. You can watch TikTok. You can watch people like Alix Earle and other folks and get inspiration from what their doing. You can look at what YouTubers are doing. Everything people are doing is a marketing decisions and there's things you can take away from that.”“Influencers start off because they thought, ‘Oh, it'd be kind of fun to make a video.' That's the initial nugget.  And as marketers who, for a living, have chosen to create content and do marketing. We also need to think, ‘Hey, it'd be a little fun to make a video.' That's where the start of it has to come from.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Elizabeth Strickert, Director of Content Marketing at A-LIGN[01:03] Why Alix Earle?[01:56] The Role of Director of Content Marketing at A-LIGN[02:29] The Rise of Alix Earl[13:41] Relatability and Authenticity in Influencer Marketing[21:07] The Power of Parasocial Influence[29:02] B2B Marketing Takeaways From Alix Earle[45:59] A-LIGN's Content Strategy[47:32] Final Thoughts and TakeawaysLinksConnect with Elizabeth on LinkedInLearn more about A-LIGNAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Is Material Information a "White Elephant"? What UK Estate Agents Need to Know! In this episode, we're joined by Sally Holdway, LawTech Strategist and co-founder of the Home Owner's Passport, to explore the importance of material information in property transactions. This topic has been making waves in the industry, but is it really as impactful as we think? Sally breaks it down and explains why it's not just another “tick box" exercise. Material information is here to stay, and while some estate agents may still be unsure about its role, others are already reaping the benefits. Sally discusses how this information, when gathered early, can lead to faster transactions and reduced fallout rates. It's not about overwhelming your clients with paperwork but rather using modern technology to streamline the process. The key takeaway? Embrace material information to stay ahead and make property deals smoother and quicker. Listen to the episode now to discover how you can make material information work for you and your clients. Episode Summary: In this insightful episode of Nomadic Diaries, Doreen sits down with Autumn Carolyn—world traveler, writer, and author of Traveling in Wonder—to talk about the realities of moving abroad, the impact of travel on our senses, the power of reflection, and the process of returning home after years overseas.Autumn shares heartfelt stories from her time living in England and traveling to 30 countries before turning 30, as well as her experience with reverse culture shock and rediscovering a sense of home in Minnesota.Key Highlights:Common Misconceptions About Moving Abroad:Autumn discusses the often-overlooked challenges of culture shock, even in English-speaking countries like England, and how simple things (like transportation) can be surprisingly disorienting.Travel as a Sensory Experience:The chapters in her book are longer for the places she loved most—proof, she says, of how deeply our senses shape our memories. The Gift of Noticing:Autumn shares her practice of intentional noticing—stopping to ask what she can see, hear, and smell in a moment—which amplifies the vividness of her experiences abroad and, she says, increases peace and presence.Goals vs. Growth:While her “30 countries by 30” goal kept her moving, Autumn explains that the true value lies not in the numbers but in the transformative experiences and self-growth that travel brings. On Reflection and Empathy:Keeping a journal helped her process and find deeper meaning in her travels. She describes how living in different cultures has made her more empathetic and skilled at connecting with people from all backgrounds.Reverse Culture Shock:Autumn is candid about the challenges of coming home—missing the friends and routines from abroad, sharing memories with those who weren't there, and grappling with the urge to get back on a plane.Advice for Aspiring Travelers:She encourages listeners to start with “bite-sized adventures”—whether that's exploring a new grocery store or a nearby town—especially if international travel feels daunting.Where to Find Autumn's Book:https://www.youtube.com/autumncarolynnphotographywww.autumncarolynn.com https://www.facebook.com/autumncarolynnphotographyhttps://www.instagram.com/autumncarolynnphotographyConnect with Us:If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe! The Olympic Peninsula beckons with its captivating blend of lavender-scented fields, historic coastal towns, and magical gardens just waiting to be discovered. Join us, The ROAMies, as we unpack our adventures through this Pacific Northwest gem, starting in Sequim—North America's lavender capital—where purple fields and blueberry farms inspired a special tea blend bearing the town's name.Sequim proved the perfect launch point for our peninsula explorations. The quaint town buzzes with lavender culture, featuring shops like Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm where everything from culinary seasonings to home goods carries the signature scent. Though we missed the Olympic Game Farm's drive-through safari experience, we'll definitely return for close encounters with bison, bears, and llamas. Our wanderings took us to the stunning Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, where a rugged trail stretches 11 miles round-trip to a distant lighthouse. We ventured to Port Townsend, a Victorian seaport brimming with maritime charm, art galleries, and the starting point of the ambitious Olympic Discovery Trail—a 130-mile pathway being built along a former railroad corridor connecting communities across the peninsula. The most unexpected adventure came during our cross-border journey to Victoria, British Columbia. A forgotten passport meant one of us explored alone while the other uncovered Port Angeles's hidden gems. Victoria's crown jewel, Butchart Gardens, revealed its century-old splendor through the Sunken Garden (transformed from an abandoned quarry), the star-shaped pond originally designed for ornamental ducks, and meticulously maintained Japanese, Italian, and Rose gardens.• Sequim serves as the perfect home base with its relaxing atmosphere and status as North America's lavender capital• Lavender and blueberry fields inspired a special tea blend named "Sequim"• Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm offers everything lavender from seasonings to home goods• The Olympic Game Farm provides drive-through wildlife viewing opportunities for families• Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge features an 11-mile round trip beach walk to a lighthouse• Port Townsend charms with Victorian architecture, art galleries, and maritime history• The Olympic Discovery Trail spans from Port Townsend to La Push along a former railroad corridor: https://olympicdiscoverytrail.org/• Victoria's Butchart Gardens showcases stunning themed gardens including the Sunken Garden, Japanese Garden, and Star Pond• Travel mishaps can lead to unexpected adventures, as when one forgot their passport for CanadaWhether you're chasing Twilight filming locations, seeking tranquil lavender rows, or craving coastal hikes, the Olympic Peninsula grounds you in Pacific Northwest beauty while feeding your wanderlust. Coming to you from the Charlotte Motor Speedway during a week of special events, the two dive into Jose's extensive 11-year leadership journey at Broad River Retail. Jose shares stories from his beginnings in liquidation furniture sales prior to joining The River and then through his progression through nearly every possible leadership role across many store locations—including Hickory, Arden, Asheville, Matthews, University, Columbia, Northeast Columbia, Fayetteville, Southern Pines, and now at the Raleigh Outlet (a/k/a the "Glenwood Gladiators"). With each move, he highlights his adaptability, focus on sales growth, and a deep commitment to leading by example. Jose credits much of Broad River's evolution to the adoption of consistent processes, like the C4 playbook, and emphasizes how these have shifted the Company from a store-by-store approach to a unified operational culture. Jose opens up about understanding the analytics of the business and those learnings that he gained during the preparation from the Orange Crush tours. Jose opens up about the importance of building trust, showing genuine care for other Memory Makers, and creating a family atmosphere in every store he leads. He discusses the rewarding aspects of being a GM, from celebrating high-performing Home Furnishings Consultants achieving the elite Home Furnishings Expert status, to fostering cultures where everyone feels supported and heard—regardless of age or background. Jose's story also touches on his personal challenges, including being legally blind, and expresses gratitude for the Company's support.     As the General Manager, Jose discusses how he constantly wants to be the lead learner and drops the mic when he says that 'Learning is an everlasting gobstopper.' Throughout the conversation, Charlie highlights Jose's resilience, service-driven leadership, and the perspective on growth at Broad River that is driven by its leaders like Jose: growing as far as their Memory Makers will take them. The episode concludes with advice for top sales professionals who may be contemplating a leap into leadership, underscoring the performance-driven, transparent, and deeply supportive environment that makes Broad River's GM role unique. From lesser-known options such as Sierra Leone and Nauru to popular Caribbean countries, he compares these donation-based programs by their pricing, speed, and travel benefits. He also explores key considerations such as hidden fees, resale value of real estate-based options, and the risk of chasing 'cheap' at the expense of practicality. Whether you're looking for a Plan B, family-friendly options, or long-term diversification, this overview sheds light on both transparent government-backed offerings and fast-track wildcards across the globe.
