They burst on the scene in 1980 and never looked back. With smash hits like “Blood and Roses,” “Only a Memory,” “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” and “A Girl Like You," The Smithereens have cultivated an incredibly loyal fanbase, and they are coming to Rams Head On Stage for one show on June 8th! We hopped on the phone with Dennis Diken, one of the founders (and the drummer) to talk about staying power for 4 years, what makes a Smithereens show so special, new projects, and tried to clear up a rumor from a 2012 Rams Head show! Normally, I'd say "have a listen now, and then grab your best friend and get a pair of tickets!" But not today. Put this on pause, get the tickets first (they are selling out) and THEN come back and have a listen!

Here at Dig Me Out we spent the last ten years starting each new season by looking back at the albums from each year that stood the test of time, disappeared without a trace, and everything in between. We kicked off with a roundtable in 2015 and revisited the albums of 1995, so it made sense to start a new series of roundtables in 1995 as well. This time we're checking out the singles of each year, looking at the year-end Modern Rock/Alternative and Hot 100 charts in the US, as well as charts from Canada, the UK and Australia for comparison. Like with all roundtables, we enlisted the help of some special guests to revisit this interesting transitional year that saw the rise of the second generation of grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair, the continued success of 1994's pop-punk breakthroughs by Green Day and The Offspring, and the juggernaut that was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But that doesn't tell the entire tale, so former A&R executive and audio tech writer James Barber and music writer Kevin Alexander join us to talk about all the hits, the near misses, and the weirdness that was 1995. Lastly, our third guest, S.W. Lauden aka Steve Coulter was unable to attend due to the tragic loss of his and his family's home in the Eaton, CA. fires. If you are able, please consider donating to the Go Fund Me set-up by Steve's friends. Maximum attitude and acres of style when music wasn't really going that way, and a cover that definitely hits the mark the band aimed at. A Girl Like You, originally by Edwyn Collins, covered by Random Hearts. Outro music is You Only Get What You Give, by New Radicals.
This remix brings the iconic '90s track "A Girl Like You" into the vibrant world of Afro rhythms. While preserving the nostalgic essence of the original, it adds powerful percussion layers and dynamic beats, infusing it with a modern Afro-inspired groove. With every beat, it invites you to dance, captivating both classic rock enthusiasts and Afrobeat lovers alike!
#felixcavaliere #therascals #thenandnow Felix's website: https://www.felixcavalieremusic.com/ Felix's new album: https://www.felixcavalieremusic.com/store The message has always been to stand for peace, love, and happiness. For legendary singer songwriter, FELIX CAVALIERE, making people feel good is primary to his illustrious 50-year career that includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. Few artists can claim they defined a generation; FELIX CAVALIERE continues to remind us to keep listening for the world's beauty. In 1965, FELIX CAVALIERE formed the ‘Young Rascals' with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish. That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island's elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega-hit “Good Lovin'” struck No. 1 in February 1966. They followed suit with a string of hits like “I've Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin'(No. 1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (No. 1 in 1968). Felix released his self-titled debut album with Todd Rundgren at the producer's helm. His follow-up albums were Destiny (1974), Castles in the Air (1979) (Castle in the Air produced another Top 40 hit – “Only a Heart Sees” reached No. 2), Dreams in Motion (1994) and in 2008 he collaborated with Stax guitar legend, Steve Cropper, on the Grammy-nominated Nudge it Up a Notch and again in 2010 with Midnight Flyer. FELIX CAVALIERE calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He's also finishing his memoir and has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. His new album… “Then and Now” is available everywhere you get your music. 00:00 Intro 02:25 Interview
Drummer Dennis Diken and New Jersey friends Jim Babjak (guitar) and Mike Mesaros (bass) bonded over their love of British Invasion music and found the perfect singer-songwriter-guitarist to join them: Pat DiNizio. The Smithereens delivered catchy, crunchy power pop, with a teenage vigilante movie introducing their unexpected breakthrough song, “Blood and Roses.” Hits such as “Only a Memory,” “A Girl Like You” and “Too Much Passion” followed. Diken, who named the band and propelled its attack, reflects on the Smithereens' rise, what rankled him about the hit album 11, how grunge affected the band's popularity, and how they regrouped after DiNizio's death in 2017. Will the Smithereens record new material with fill-in frontmen Marshall Crenshaw and Robin Wilson? And how did Diken become the drummer for a mini Kinks reunion?
Today we have singer songwriter, Trevor Martin. In this episode we discuss his new song release Girl Like You, how he got started, his inspiration for music, his dream collaboration, and much more! His pioneering musicianship on the keys of the Hammond B-3 electric organ, together with his rich, powerful R & B vocals gave the Rascals their signature sound, which was pure magic, in a long string of hits including “Good Lovin”, “I've Been Lonely Too Long”, “Groovin”, “How Can I Be Sure”, “A Girl Like You”, “A Beautiful Morning”, and “People Got to be Free”. Our guest, together with his bandmates Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish – better known as The Rascals - are widely considered to be the very first REAL Rock & Roll band, and they were without question the best “blue eyed soul” group to emerge in the 60's. Their song “Good Lovin”, originally recorded by “The Olympics”, is listed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the top 500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll. And Rolling Stone included it on their list of the Greatest Songs of All Time. And the song “Groovin” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Since the Rascals broke up in 1972, our guest has had a hugely successful solo career, with 7 albums including his self-titled album “Felix Cavaliere”, “Destiny”, “Treasure”, “Castles in the Air”, “Dreams in Motion”, “Nudge it up a Notch”, which got a Grammy nomination, and “Midnight Flyer”. He continues to perform across the country and around the world for sell-out crowds with his band “Felix Cavaliere's Rascals”. And last year, he released a highly compelling, deeply personal and very moving book entitled, “Memoir of a Rascal”, which is truly one of the most poignant and spiritually uplifting memoirs I've ever read. The list of accolades this man has received is staggering. As a member of the Rascals, he's been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Hit Parade Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. And as an individual, he's also been inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Hammond Organ Hall of Fame. And of equal importance, in 2015 he received the Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award from the World Hunger Association, in recognition of his well-known efforts to make the world better, kinder and more generous. That Rascal Felix Cavaliere is Still ‘Groovin'. The Legendary singer songwriter, has been making people feel good with his music for over 50 years. So why stop now? He's not! The Rascals are on the move! He and fellow Rascal Gene Cornish are hitting the road to share some more ‘Good Lovin' on 'The Rascals Time Peace Tour 2022'. Gene fell ill during past concert and has since had a pacemaker put in, but he's good to go. Felix Cavaliere calls Nashville home now, but people in my ‘hood' near Pelham, NY have always loved to claim him as their hometown rock n' roll hero. In fact, he just wrote a book about it all. “Felix Cavaliere Memoir of a Rascal From Pelham, NY To The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame”. Do people recognize him? Felix says sometimes, but because the Rascals were around before MTV they didn't have the kind of visual exposure that helped promote so many other groups to make them recognizable beyod their music. Speaking of being recognized or not, Felix chuckles while telling the story about his dear friend Billy Joel who he was with at his concert in Nashville. When Billy Joel looked up at himself on the giant TV monitors on the wall, he turned to Felix and said, "Whos That?" "My Father?" Felix laughs when he shares that story as he make the point, "Sometimes I too don't recognize myself". I asked Felix if the songs we know so well and still enjoy today are kinda like his children? Yes he said, they are. Songs like Good Lovin', Groovin', It's A Beautiul Morning, I've Been Lonely Too Long, How Can I Be Sure, A Girl Like You, and People Got To Be Free. The Rascals are considered the best 'blue-eyed soul' group to come out of the 60's, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. Their message has always been to stand for Peace, Love and Happiness. Felix says, as a musician, when people hear your music and it brings them joy, that joy translates back to you. Especially live on stage. The Rascals Featuring Felix Cavaliere & Gene Cornish Time Peace Tour. November 11 | St. George Theatre | Staten Island, N.Y. November 12 | College Street Music Hall | New Haven, Conn. November 13 | NYCB Theatre at Westbury | Westbury, N.Y. November 16 | Mayo Performing Arts Center | Morristown, N.J. November 18 | Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino | Atlantic City, N.J. More dates being announced soon.
The Smithereens, formed in 1980, with their unique brand of back-to-basics rock n' roll, seemed the polar opposite of what was being embraced by radio and MTV at the time. Yet, the band became quite popular on both college radio and the fledgling video network, scoring hits with “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” “Only a Memory,” “A Girl Like You” and others. At the dawn of the Nineties, several bands, including Nirvana, began to cite the Smithereens as a major influence on the burgeoning grunge scene. Ironically, Capitol Records dropped the band because they wanted to focus more on grunge bands. In 1993, the band entered the studio without a label, self producing for the first time in many years, laying down a bunch of tracks that were shelved when they signed a new record contract with RCA, eventually issuing A Date With the Smithereens. Now, almost 30 years later, these recordings get a proper release as The Lost Album, from Sunset Blvd Records. We talk with guitarist Jim Babjak about sifting through these 30-year old recordings, and also what's next for the Smithereens.
The Smithereens dominated modern rock radio in the early 80s to mid 90s with songs like "Only A Memory" and "A Girl Like You". Despite the tragic loss of their lead singer, Pat DiNizio, the band soldiers on with guest vocalists Marshall Crenshaw and The Gin Blossoms Robin Wilson taking the vocals. Guitarist Jim Babjak and drummer Dennis Diken visit the What Difference Does It Make virtual studios and talk up their passion for 60s pop songs, the road to success, and this mysterious lost album from the 90s, strangely enough, called The Lost Album. Win an exclusive VIP tour experience with Pink Floyd drummer, Nick Mason, and his band Saucerful of Secrets. Details are found on the Pantheon Podcast website.

Noel catches up with Jim Babjak of The Smithereens, who are about to release their latest album called "The Lost Album." It was recorded in 1993. Jim talks about continuing the band following the death of lead singer, Pat DiNizio. Since Pat's death, the band have had a few guest lead singers including Robin Wilson and Marshall Crenshaw. The Smithereens are best known for their songs "A Girl Like You," "Blood and Roses," and "Only a Memory."
They Might Be Giants is an alternative rock band that formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. They are known as an absurdist, surreal alternative band popular on modern rock charts and college radio. They are also known in the DIY music genre and in children's music. Flood is their third studio album and has been certified platinum. It is their best selling album, and considered their signature work. During the 80's Flansburgh and Linnell started recording their songs onto an answering machine and advertised the phone number in The Village Voice and other newspapers as “Dial-A-Song.” The answering machine would play one track at a time, sometimes uncompleted work, sometimes mock advertisements. It became quite popular, but it was an answering machine, so the quality wasn't great. One of their slogans was “Always Busy, Often Broken.” It was a local Brooklyn number, so long distance fees applied. The band advertised it with the line, “Free when you call from work.”TMBG have released 23 studio albums, 10 compilations, 10 live albums, 8 EP's 7 videos and 11 singles. They have also released five children's albums – Tiny Toon Adventures exposed them to a younger audience, and they leveraged it to expand their career. They made heavy use of the internet since the early 90's, creating one of the first artist-owned music stores in 2004, and have made podcasts on a monthly basis from 2005 to 2014.Bruce brings us this unusual album. Istanbul (Not Constantinople) This is a cover originally written in 1953 on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. Lyrics are by Jimmy Kennedy, music by Nat Simon, and performed by the Four Lads. The TMBG version was featured in the first season of MTV's Liquid Television and in an episode of "Tiny Toon Adventures."Your Racist FriendIn discussing this song, John Flansburgh told Songfacts, “You can't confront every person who's making an ass of themselves. But there are times when you want to. So it's really about a subtler idea than over-the-top expressions of race hate. It's more just about the culture.”Somebody Keeps Moving My ChairI think we can all identify with the premise of this song, that there's a lot of unpleasantness that we have to deal with, and we can do that for the most part. But when somebody keeps moving your chair that is beyond the pale. Theme from FloodThis brief piece starts off the album and leads into “Birdhouse In Your Soul.” It seemed like a good addition to include, since most of the songs are short.Birdhouse In Your Soul This is the lead single from the album, and is their highest charting single in both the US and the UK, hitting number 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 6 on the UK singles chart. The lyrics are narrated from the perspective of a blue nightlight shaped like a canary. We found it fascinating that there are 18 key changes in this song! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:"The Simpsons Theme" by Danny Elfman (from the television series "The Simpsons”)Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie made their TV series debut in this month in 1990, though they had shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show prior to that. STAFF PICKS:I Remember You by Skid RowBrian starts off this week's staff picks with an acoustic/power pop hair ballad from the band fronted by Sebastian Bach. Bassist Rachel Boland and guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo penned this song which was their third single from their debut album. It is about the girl from days gone by that you just can't forget. Fly High Michelle by Enuff Z'nuffRob's staff pick was inspired by a tragedy caused by a drug overdose. Donnie Vie wrote this song in remembrance of a friend who had passed, and it was the biggest hit of the group's career. The band takes their name from their bassist, Chip Z'nuff.Pure by The Lightning Seeds Wayne features this track from Liverpool's The Lightning Seeds. The group is the product of producer Ian Broudie, and is really more of a solo project with musicians brought in to create a touring band. The name comes from a misheard lyric from Prince's “Raspberry Beret.”Girl Like You by The SmithereensBruce's staff pick is the first single from the Smithereens third album, appropriately (?) named 11. Madonna was supposed to sing the harmony vocals but didn't show up for the recording session. The band got Maria Vidal to do the vocals. It hit number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the US Mainstream Rock charts. NOVELTY TRACK:Swing the Mood by Jive Bunny and the MastermixersThis mashup of swing and early rock songs was on the charts in January 1990.

Early in 1965, FELIX CAVALIERE formed the ‘Young Rascals' with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish. That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island's elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega hit “Good Lovin'” struck No. 1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul' group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and yet he is one of the nicest artists I've ever had the privilege of interviewing on my show. Felix was creating bands as a teen and by 1965 struck gold when he put together his magical group - The Rascals. Singing lead on hits like "Good Lovin', Groovin, A Girl Like You, A Beautiful Morning and People Got To Be Free, it's easy to understand his amazing success.Coming to town for a show, I got to share some time with Felix on my show and it was an interview I'll never forget. Check it out...I think you'll like it.....alot.
