Lo Tom - "Start Payin'," from the 2020 self-released album LP2. Back in 2017, David Bazan and TW Walsh of Pedro the Lion teamed up with Trey Many and Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 to create Lo Tom, whose self-titled debut combined all the things we love about each of their respective bands: melodic, ‘90s-influenced rock, heavy with guitar riffs. As the band said themselves, "We had fun making the first album, so we decided to do it again." The sophomore release was funded by fans via Kickstarter, and while they say today's Song of the Day is "coincidentally named," the lyric "might be time to find out what I owe and start paying" seems pretty appropriate here. In this episode we talk to Griffin House about his upcoming show, discuss the Kim Richey and J Edwards show from the previous weeks, get sad with TW Walsh, and reminisce about the week prior, all while sampling a fine Michter’s Straight Rye. Lets begin.
As one of indie-rock's busiest mastering engineers, TW Walsh has tackled almost 1,000 different projects, including releases for Sufjan Stevens, Ben Gibbard and The Shins. He's also had a longtime friendship and working alliance with former Vinyl Emergency guest David Bazan, writing and performing on albums for Pedro The Lion, Headphones and most recently Lo Tom, as Walsh and Bazan are joined by Starflyer 59's Jason Martin and Trey Many. As Lo Tom's debut full-length was released last month by Barsuk, and his newest solo effort Terrible Freedom came out in April, Walsh joins us to discuss his father's extensive record collection, the future of mastering in the age of digital DIY, how the benefits of streaming have prevented albums from growing on us, Elvis Costello's vast and diverse discography, whether Walsh will continue to press vinyl on his own and how he became the subject of one of Bazan's best-known lyrics. Visit twwalsh.com to buy his releases on vinyl or digitally, and pick up Lo Tom's new album from Barsuk.com or wherever you purchase music. You can also follow @LoTomLoTom on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. SPONSORS: Vinyl Me, Please; Pinwheel Records; Vinyl For A Cause; Flipbin.
When I had the idea for this series "Processing Belief Through Music," I wrote out a wish list of songwriters I'd want to speak to. David Bazan was at the top of my list. His songwriting has been a major part of the soundtrack for over a decade now. Scheduling an interview proved that perseverance can be damn hard, but rewarding. As I spoke to TW Walsh and then Derek Webb, Bazan seemed to be the connective tissue of the conversations. It was an honor to be able to speak with David Bazan about his new album and his perspectives on wrestling with belief through songwriting.

TW Walsh kicks off our series "Processing Belief Through Music." I've been a fan of his music since discovering The Soft Drugs in 2008. Before that, TW spent time on the road and in the studio as a member of Pedro The Lion. Since he didn't grow up around "Christian Culture," his insights as an outsider looking in are valuable.
