In this episode of the Restaurant Owners Uncorked podcast, Wil Brawley talks with Seth Watson, the founder of Distillery of Modern Art in Atlanta. Seth shares his entrepreneurial journey, from launching a production and event design business out of a garage to eventually building a one-of-a-kind distillery that blends spirits, art, and community. He opens up about why he left his first business, how he navigated outdated Georgia alcohol laws, and why he built a distillery with multiple revenue streams: a cocktail bar, an art gallery, an event space, and a production facility. Seth also discusses the lessons he's learned about ego, iteration, and surrounding himself with smart people, while offering fascinating insights into bourbon, gin, and the modern spirits landscape.Key Takeaways: From Garage to 400+ Events a Year: Seth's first business in event production started in a garage and grew into a full-scale company handling hundreds of large-scale events annually. Exit Fueled by Values Misalignment: After 17 years and increasing tension with a 50/50 partner, Seth exited the business to preserve his sanity and avoid letting resentment fester. Control Matters: Seth learned the hard way that 50/50 partnerships often don't work. He now maintains control in any business he leads. Birth of a Unique Concept: Distillery of Modern Art combines a distillery, cocktail bar, art gallery, and event space—all designed around Seth's love for whiskey and modern art. Navigating Georgia's Arcane Liquor Laws: Seth had to build his distillery concept while lobbying against outdated post-Prohibition laws that limited direct-to-consumer sales. Whiskey Meets Art: The subjectivity of both whiskey and art inspired the distillery's brand and mission: create a sensory and aesthetic experience, not just a product. Producer for Other Brands: In addition to his own spirits, Seth's team produces over 40 products for 18 other brands across the U.S., offering a more personal and flexible alternative to large manufacturers like MGP. No Ego in Product Development: Seth scrapped his original gin recipe when taste tests failed—not because he didn't like it, but because customers didn't. Craft Over Hype: Seth values drinkability and authenticity over branding. He prefers bottles like Michter's over hyped-up names like Pappy Van Winkle. Committed to Community: From supporting small farmers to featuring local artists (commission-free), Seth backs up his community-first philosophy with action. Owner Mentality, Not Exit Mentality: Like the Yingling family, Seth isn't chasing a fast exit. He wants to build a sustainable, generational business—possibly passing it on to his children one day.

What's the Biggest Thing In Tipton? America's oldest family-owned pasta sauce maker, DelGrosso Foods! The DelGrosso family has been making pasta sauce in Tipton for over 75 years, and running their amusement park even longer. Joe and Michael DelGrosso tell me the stories behind this; the love story, the beer garden story, the innovation story, and through it all, their family story. Maybe the most amazing story is how this 78 year old sauce company doubled their sales in the past two years. It's a real success story! Hear about hot pepperoni, hot sauce, and how DelGrosso's new sauce has catapulted into second place nationally in only a few years of sales. You'll also hear stories about this clan grew up together, then spread out, but still comes together to keep the business running. It's very much a central PA story, about small towns, small companies, and family strength, with a dash of railroads and luck. Once again, a long interview; the longest we've run yet, so not a lot of time for other stuff, but we do have a contest for you! DelGrosso Foods donated two prizes: a selection of 12 jars of their Original and La Famiglia DelGrosso sauces, and two day passes to the DelGrosso Amusement Park and Laguna Splash Water Park! Easy directions for how to enter are in the episode, listen and win! And just because, I still shoehorned in Tipton and Tyrone stuff: Austin's Texas Hot Dogs in Tipton, and then Tyrone stuff: The Brew Coffee and Tap serving great coffee and craft beer and wines, the small but mighty -- mighty delicious! -- Sugar Mill Bakery, and a great little deli, Mac's Market and The Gridiron, with full service meats and the signature Tyrone hoagies topped with a cool drift of thin-sliced onions. It's a long episode, but it's worth it! What I'm Drinking Today was the latest Michter's 10 Year Old Bourbon release, a leaner Michter's than usual. The Smack-Dab in the Centre sponsorship moment covers the upcoming Hoppy Valley Brewers Fest, coming next weekend, July 19th! Next episode? With its outrageous humor, fast-paced energy, and unforgettable moments, The Wolf of Wall Street remains one of the most exhilarating, yet cautionary, tales of ambition gone wild.To complement this wild ride, I'm pairing the film with Michter's US1 Bourbon. Joe Magliocco didn't found Michter's Whiskey…but he is the modern-day father of the brand. Magliocco uncovered the lapsed trademark for Michter's nearly 30 years ago that led to the brand's revival. He'll join us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth to discuss everything from the history of Michter's to today's concerns over tariffs and overproduction. In the news, the European Union has joined the trade war with the U.S., and will impose a 50% tariff on Bourbon and other American whiskies April 1. The U.S. has responded with a threat from President Donald Trump to tax European spirits and wines at 200%, and spirits producers on both sides of the Atlantic are concerned. We'll have the details, along with the story of a New Jersey man's unusual find along the beach — 11 bottles of Prohibition-era whiskey.

Pappy 13:When first approached by Buffalo Trace, Julian III was honored, but not immediately interested. He had ample bourbon aging, but the concern was for future reserves, since by this time, bourbon was increasing in popularity. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999 and had been making the bourbon with nearly the same recipe as Pappy's. The transition was easy. As of May 2002, Buffalo Trace has produced the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy's exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their strict quality standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment.Michter's 10: The 10 Year Rye expression reflects the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky's unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Often much older than the age statement on the label, only a select few barrels age with the elegance required for inclusion in these highly limited releases.
On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show presented by BAXUS, Fred's guest is pitmaster icon Pat Martin. Martin founded Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint in Nolensville, Tennessee, in 2006, focusing on West Tennessee-style whole hog barbecue. During the episode, Fred and Pat pair whiskey with all sorts of barbecue, from wings to brisket, while talking about how Martin got into barbecuing, hogs, the art of making brisket, Marines, candy and more. Along the way, they pair the protein up with Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye, Jack Daniel's Twice Barreled Rye, Michter's 10 Year Rye, Russell's Reserve 9 Year Barrel Pick, Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection Spiritus Frumenti and a 28-Year-Old, 162-proof Obtanium Canadian Whiskey. Many paper towels fell victim during the feast. Kentucky distiller Michter's is bracing for the possibility of a 50% tariffs on exports to the EU. Michter's Legacy Series celebrates the foundational roots and heritage of the brand through two different whiskeys. Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey honors John Shenk who founded what would become the Michter's brand all the way back in 1753. This years release of Shenk's is a predominately rye whiskey that is finished in naturally dried french oak barrels for 24 months. Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey honors the time period when the Michter's distillery was known as Bombergers. This years release is a bourbon with a malted rye component that was aged for three years in air dried chinquapin oak barrels. That's a lot of unique finishing for these two whiskeys. But how do they taste? Join us this week as we talk about barrel picks, fast food, and of course these two bottles. Hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.
