Send us a textIn this episode of Frontiers of Faith, host Katie Ruvalcaba discusses the recent election of Pope Leo XIV with missionary Cate Broadbent. They explore the implications of having an American pope with a strong missionary background, particularly in relation to Peru's diverse Christian culture. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in rural areas of Peru, the importance of evangelization, and the unique perspective Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy. The episode concludes with a prayer for the new pope and reflections on the future of the Church. Also, please remember to pray for Saul Keeton as he undergoes treatment for cancer. May 20th, 2025: Can A Good Protestant Go to Heaven?; The Post-Christian Culture; Making Room for God in Our Lives
Today, I'm joined by Cara Meredith, author of the new book Church Camp. We're digging into the ways camp shapes our faith, our friendships, and our sense of who belongs. We get real about the fun memories, but also the uncomfortable parts—who was included, who was left out, and what messages we picked up along the way. Cara and I talk about how camp can turn faith into a checklist—who's in, who's out, who fits and who doesn't. But we also imagine what camp could be if it became a place of real belonging, where every kid was seen and valued, no matter their story. If you've ever looked back on your camp experience with mixed feelings, or wondered how those weeks shaped your view of God and yourself, you'll find something here. This episode is about holding the good and the hard together, asking better questions, and dreaming about what's possible. So join us as we go to camp.A sought-after speaker, writer, and public theologian, Cara Meredith is the author of Church Camp and The Color of Life. Passionate about issues of justice, race, and privilege, Cara holds a master of theology from Fuller Seminary and is a postulant for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church. With a background in education and nonprofit work, she wears more hats than she probably ought, but mostly just enjoys playing with words, a lot. Her writing has been featured in national media outlets such as The Oregonian, The New York Times, The Living Church, The Christian Century, and Baptist News Global, among others. She lives with her family in Oakland, California.Cara's Book:Church CampCara's Recommendation:Here I AmSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. In this episode of the Connect Podcast, Pastor Cole Phillips sits down with his daughter, Makenzie Phillips, who leads the young adult ministries at The Connection Church, to discuss how the gospel is breaking through in unexpected places in a post-Christian culture. From college campuses to social media, they explore where young people are finding faith and how bold evangelism is opening doors for the gospel. Plus, hear how The Connection Church is stepping through these open doors to make a lasting impact. Based on 1 Corinthians 16:9, this episode is all about recognizing and seizing opportunities for effective ministry, even in a culture that seems to be turning away from faith.

Has the US become a bad place to be a Christian? In a recent NY Times feature, writer Aaron Renn, who has been called the "Malcolm Gladwell of Conservative Christianity," claims that America has shifted into a "negative world" where Christianity is a social liability. In this episode, Mark and Kelly wrestle with this idea that Christianity is losing its cultural dominance in the US. We cover a range of topics such as the prevalence of Christianity (a recent PRRI study asserts that 2/3 of Americans identify as Christian), Christian nationalism, persecution, tolerance, inclusion, privilege and power, the response of Progressive Christians, and what it even means to be a Christian in the first place. For the original article, see https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/06/us/aaron-renn-christianity-conservative-negative-world.html For the PRRI research, see: https://www.prri.org/research/census-2023-american-religionFind your guides at Quoir Academy! Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the intense political activity at the turn of the 18th Century, when many politicians in London went to great lengths to find a Protestant successor to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland and others went to equal lengths to oppose them. Queen Anne had no surviving children and, following the old rules, there were at least 50 Catholic candidates ahead of any Protestant ones and among those by far the most obvious candidate was James, the only son of James II. Yet with the passing of the Act of Settlement in 1701 ahead of Anne's own succession, focus turned to Europe and to Princess Sophia, an Electress of the Holy Roman Empire in Hanover who, as a granddaughter of James I, thus became next in line to be crowned at Westminster Abbey. It was not clear that Hanover would want this role, given its own ambitions and the risks, in Europe, of siding with Protestants, and soon George I was minded to break the rules of succession so that he would be the last Hanoverian monarch as well as the first.WithAndreas Gestrich Professor Emeritus at Trier University and Former Director of the German Historical Institute in LondonElaine Chalus Professor of British History at the University of LiverpoolAnd Mark Knights Professor of History at the University of WarwickProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:J.M.
