Apple, like all successful companies, became successful by maximizing profits and minimizing costs. However, to achieve this, they sold their soul to America's biggest adversary: the Chinese Communist Party. The story of how this transpired is chronicled in exceptional detail by my guest, Patrick McGee, who joins me to discuss his book “Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company” and explains whether or not he believes Trump can return manufacturing to America. - - - Today's Sponsor: Balance of Nature - Go to https://balanceofnature.com and use promo code KLAVAN for 35% off your first order PLUS get a free bottle of Fiber and Spice.

A debate has been heating up on crypto Twitter about Real Economic Value (REV) — a metric meant to measure the value blockchains accrue from user activity. REV includes transaction fees and MEV tips, but excludes issuance — the inflationary rewards paid to validators. Some say it's the clearest window into genuine usage. Others argue it's a flawed and misleading proxy. So we brought the argument to Unchained. Tom Dunleavy, Head of Venture at Varys Capital, says fees are headed to zero, and blockchains shouldn't be valued like companies. Meanwhile, Austin Federa, Co-founder of DoubleZero, believes REV offers a real lens on activity, maturity, and demand. The conversation covers: Whether REV is a meaningful metric (and how to game it) Whether L2 tokens are fundamentally broken What happens to security when fees (and MEV) go to zero If high REV signals product-market fit or just economic noise How to value blockchains, if not with REV Visit our website for breaking news, analysis, op-eds, articles to learn about crypto, and much more: unchainedcrypto.com Thank you to our sponsors! Did you know that up to the Partition of India in 1947, Kashmiri Muslims lived in conditions that very much resembled serfdom? Exploitation of Kashmiri Muslims was particularly notable during the Dogra Dynasty, which ruled the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from 1846 to 1947.Since their partition in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought four wars: in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999. Based on research and information, three of these wars were specifically about the Kashmir region. In this interview, I bring historical perspective to conflicts and crises about Kashmir by asking my guest scholar the following questions: ►Is Jammu and Kashmir different than Kashmir?►Who are Kashmiris?►Why did Persian missionaries visit Kashmir?►What happened to Kashmir after the Mughal Empire?►What does it mean that Kashmir was a princely state?►Did the British introduce a more egalitarian system in Kashmir? If so, why?►Why Kashmir was an autonomous region under British rule and until recently in the Republic of India?►Why is Kashmir called the Indian Administered Kashmir?►How did Kashmir become a part of India?►What was the Kashmir massacre that happened in 1947?►How are Kashmiris 'othered' in India?►What is it about Kashmir that makes it different from all other Indian states?►Is Kashmir an integral part of India?►Would my guest scholar be able to freely talk about Kashmir's history in India?

There exist problematic attitudes and beliefs about dwarfism that have rarely been challenged, but continue to construct people with dwarfism as an inferior group within society. Midgetism: The Exploitation and Discrimination of People with Dwarfism (Routledge, 2023) introduces the critical term 'midgetism', which the author has coined, to demonstrate that the socio-cultural discrimination people with dwarfism experience is influenced by both heightism and disablism. As a result, it unpacks and challenges the problematic social assumptions that reinforce midgetism within society, including the acceptability of 'midget entertainment' and 'non-normate space', to demonstrate how particular spaces can either aid in reinforcing or challenge midgetism. Drawing on the tripartite model of disability, this book demonstrates how midget entertainment is framed as a non-normative positivism, which makes it an acceptable form of employment. Using autocritical discourse analysis, the book exposes, examines and responds to excuses that are used to reinforce midgetism, thus critiquing the numerous beliefs influenced by cultural representations of dwarfism, such as people with dwarfism being acceptable figures of entertainment. You may have heard of AI art generators, tools that use artificial intelligence to create images based on language prompts. For example, you can type “a picture of Elmo from Sesame Street in the style of Pablo Picasso”. These tools are fun and impressive, but they also pose a serious threat to artists who share their work online. AI art generators rely on large datasets of existing images to learn how to produce new ones. These datasets are often scraped from the internet, without the consent or knowledge of the original artists. What can you do to protect your art from AI exploitation? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How can I stop being a people pleaser? Does our personality change when we speak in another language? Happy Friday, Everyone, and welcome back to another Weekly Update where I'm hopefully keeping you ten steps ahead and helping you make sense of it all. This week's update hits hard, covering everything from misleading remote work headlines to the uncomfortable reality of deepfake grief, the quiet rollout of AI-generated video realism, and what some are calling the ticking time bomb of digital security: quantum computing.Buckle up. This one's dense but worth it.⸻Remote Work Crisis? The Headlines Are WrongGallup's latest State of the Global Workplace report sparked a firestorm, claiming remote work is killing human flourishing. However, as always, the truth is far more complex. I break down the real story in the data, including why remote workers are actually more engaged, how lack of boundaries is the true enemy, and why “flexibility” isn't just a perk… it's a lifeline. If your organization is still stuck in the binary of office vs. remote, this is a wake-up call because the house is on fire.⸻AI Resurrects the Dead: Is That Love… or Exploitation? Two recent stories show just how far we've come in a very short period of time. And, tragically how little we've wrestled with what it actually means. One family used AI to create a video message from their murdered son to be played in court. Another licensed the voice of a deceased sports commentator to bring him back for broadcasts. It's easy to say “what's the harm?” But what does it really mean since the dead can't say no?⸻Deepfake Video Just Got Easier Than EverGoogle semi-quietly rolled out Veo V2. If you weren't aware, its a powerful new AI video model that can generate photorealistic 8-second clips from a simple text prompt. It's legitimately impressive. It's fast. And, it's available to the masses. I explore the incredible potential and the very real danger, especially in a world already drowning in misinformation. If you thought fake news was bad, wait until it moves.⸻Quantum Apocalypse: Hype or Real Threat?I'll admit that it sounds like a sci-fi headline, but the situation and implications are real. It's not a matter of if quantum computing hits; it's a matter of when. And when it hits escape velocity, everything we know about encryption, privacy, and digital security gets obliterated. I unpack what this “Q-Day” scenario actually means, why it's not fear-mongering to pay attention, and how to think clearly without falling into panic.⸻If this episode got you thinking, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Drop a comment, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and don't forget to subscribe so you never miss an update.—Show Notes:In this Weekly Update, host Christopher Lind provides a comprehensive update on the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. He begins by discussing a Gallup report on worker wellness, highlighting the complex impacts of remote work on employee engagement and overall life satisfaction. Christopher examines the advancements of Google Gemini, specifically focusing on VO2's text-to-video capabilities and its potential implications. He also discusses ethical considerations surrounding AI used to resurrect the dead in court cases and media. The episode concludes with a discussion on the potential risks of a 'quantum apocalypse,' urging listeners to stay informed but not overly anxious about these emerging technologies.00:00 – Introduction01:31 – Gallup Report, Remote Work & Human Thriving16:14 – AI-Generated Videos & Google's Veo V226:33 – AI-Resurrected Grief & Digital Consent41:31 – Quantum Apocalypse & the Myth of Safety53:50 – Final Thoughts and Reflection#RemoteWork #AIethics #Deepfakes #QuantumComputing #FutureOfWork

Ryann Gerber Jorban joins Dr. Sandie Morgan to discuss how labor exploitation functions as a hidden form of modern-day slavery, and how community collaboration, empathy, and survivor-centered strategies are critical in addressing labor trafficking. Ryann Gerber Jorban Ryann Gerber Jorban is a seasoned prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, where she has served since 1998. With a background in sociology from UC Riverside and a law degree from the University of Michigan, she has devoted her career to seeking justice for vulnerable communities, including children, the elderly, and survivors of abuse and human trafficking. In her role as Deputy in Charge, she leads both the Economic Justice and Labor Justice Units, focusing on wage theft, labor exploitation, and fraud. Ryann is nationally recognized for her survivor-centered approach, combining legal expertise with a deep commitment to collaboration, trust building, and meeting survivors' foundational needs. She was also a featured speaker at the 2025 Ensure Justice Conference, where she shared her insights on labor trafficking and the exploitation of children. Key Points Ryann Gerber Jorban describes labor exploitation as a spectrum, with wage theft on one end and labor trafficking on the other, highlighting how quickly one can escalate into the other. Her role involves leading efforts to address wage theft and labor fraud, particularly in sectors vulnerable to exploitation such as construction, restaurants, and healthcare. Labor trafficking often relies on coercion rather than force, such as threats of deportation or withholding pay, to control vulnerable workers. She explains that being paid less than minimum wage does not disqualify a situation from being trafficking—it's about how a person is controlled or coerced. In a case involving garment workers, individuals were found working 55 hours a week for just $5–$6 an hour, illustrating severe labor violations. She emphasizes building legal cases without placing the burden on the victim, allowing survivors time to stabilize before contributing to legal proceedings. Ryann integrates Maslow's hierarchy of needs into her legal strategy, ensuring victims have basic needs met before asking them to participate in investigations. She highlights the role of community-based organizations in providing culturally competent care and case management for victims. The importance of collaboration across law enforcement, nonprofits, faith communities, and local agencies is key to supporting survivors and combating labor trafficking. Consumers have a role to play by asking ethical questions and avoiding businesses with exploitative labor practices. Disasters create heightened risks for labor exploitation, and vigilance is needed during rebuilding efforts to ensure ethical labor is used. Faith communities are uniquely positioned to help identify signs of exploitation and educate their congregations in simple, practical ways. The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis highlighted the nation's triumphs but it also reveled in public exploitation of indigenous Filipinos, who were put on display to demonstrate the "savagery" of other cultures. In addition to the 47-acre "Philippine Village," the Philippine Constabulary Band was also a popular attraction. Piccolo player Pedro B. Navarro was a key member of the band. His great-granddaughter, Mary Lacanlale, an ethnomusicologist at California State University, shares insights about the band, the exploitation of Filipino people at the World's Fair and her ancestor's experience there. She also reflects on the recent dedication of a memorial to the Philippine Village in Clayton.

Andor's second season is a different beast—and an absolute feast of real-world parallels. In “Sagrona Teema,” (Andor S2, E2), the differences between Andor's seasons become clear: Season 2 is faster, more mysterious, and altogether more oblique. But the parallels to life in 2025 have become even more clear. In our recap this week, we draw the lines connecting Andor to ICE deportations, leftist infighting, and issues of consent. On a happier note, we're giving a Chandrilan toast to the return of Syril and the hard launch of Sedra (is that their couple name??). New to Growing Up Skywalker? Bernadette and Brittany discuss the fate of the Tiger King, animal abuse in Hollywood, ending lab testing on animals, and more.Brittany Peet is general counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement at the PETA Foundation. Through legal and regulatory actions as well as public advocacy campaigns, she works on behalf of animals held captive in roadside zoos, traveling shows, and the film and television industries. She appeared in the docuseries Chimp Crazy on HBO and Tiger King on Netflix, and she was part of the legal team that achieved a landmark victory establishing that big-cat cub-petting encounters violate the federal Endangered Species Act. Her victories also include the rescues of more than 800 animals, including 80 bears, 78 big cats, and 24 chimpanzees. You can help support all the ways PETA is working to end animal abuse at PETA.org.
On Episode 31 of our show "Grindhouse Pizzeria" which is dedicated to all things encompassing various Grindhouse, Drive-In, and Exploitation genres; we will be reviewing and dissecting a first of its kind here at GP with the gritty moonshine run/car chase flick with 1973's "WHITE LIGHTNING". Directed by Joseph Sargent (Jaws: The Revenge) and starring the ONE and the ONLY Burt Reynolds at Gator McKlusky. Rounding out this killer cast is Bo Hopkins, Diane, Ladd, Ned Beatty, Jennifer Billingsley, Matt Clark, John Steadman, R.G. Armstrong, and many more. This movie, which spawned an equally solid sequel "GATOR", is a revenge tale about moonsine runners versus a corrupt sheriff. There's plenty of crooked cops, moonshine, fast cars, and car crashes. Burt is here doing what he does best...looking cool and driving fast. Our discussion is headed off by our regular hosts Tom Komisar and Cameron Scott! Join the two of them as they take a deep dive dissection of this loose and fast exploitation effort! Come on in at the Grindhouse Pizzeria, pull up a chair, and grab yourself a slice! "You two are more fun than going to an all-night dentist."
Feelings of burnout and boredom have become prevalent in modern life. To understand the roots of and solutions to these issues, we can turn to both ancient philosophers and contemporary thinkers. Among the latter is Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han, whose thought-provoking analyses are gaining increasing recognition. If you're not yet familiar with Han's philosophy, Steven Knepper, a professor at the Virginia Military Institute and the co-author of a new critical introduction to this modern philosopher's work, will take us on a tour of some of Han's key ideas. In the first part of our conversation, Steven unpacks Han's concept of the “burnout society” and why so many of us feel tired from participating in what he calls “auto-exploitation” and “positive violence.” We then discuss how our burnout society is also a “palliative society” that tries to avoid suffering at all costs and how our obsession with health has turned us into a modern version of Nietzsche's “last man.” We end our discussion with some of Han's ideas for resisting the pitfalls of modernity, including embracing ritual, contemplation, and an openness to the mystery of others.Resources Related to the PodcastByung-Chul Han's books, including The Burnout Society and The Palliative SocietyShop Class as Soulcraft and The World Beyond Your Head by Matthew B. This episode of the China Global podcast discusses evolving disputes between China and South Korea, specifically regarding their unresolved maritime boundary in the Yellow Sea. There is a long history of fishing disputes between the two countries in the Provisional Measures Zone (or PMZ) of the Yellow Sea, which is where their exclusive economic zones overlap. Although China and South Korea have engaged in negotiations over the years, they have yet to come to an agreement on their boundaries in the Yellow Sea.Taking advantage of the persisting disagreement on delimitation of maritime borders, China has employed gray zone tactics in the Yellow Sea to expand its territorial presence in the region. In the most recent dispute, China installed a new steel structure in the PMZ, causing a maritime standoff between Chinese and Korean coast guards. To discuss recent developments in the Yellow Sea and China's broader gray zone tactics in the maritime realm, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Ray Powell, the Director of SeaLight, a maritime transparency project at Stanford University's Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation. Ray is also the co-host of the Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific podcast, and a 35-year veteran of the US Air Force. Johnny Bananas is up to his old tricks (and we do mean OLD) on the Netflix *live* dating game, Pop the Balloon, where he may or may not have been accused of racism, but either way he was giving extreme creepy uncle cringe vibes. We follow-up on our discussion on the Gold & Greed documentary on the treasure hunt that cost some people their lives and caused many controversies over a decade. Sarah describes the Bad Influence docuseries about a group of child influencers, the parent who exploited them, and the ways it was similar to a cult. The Department of Health and Human Services has stopped the flow of money designated by Congress to protect immigrant children from exploitation. Layoffs have hit legal aid groups across the country that help the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who cross the U.S.-Mexico border and are especially vulnerable to forced labor. We'll hear more. But first: hefty tariffs on solar panel parts and DHL's pause on certain shipments to U.S. consumers.

“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” - Psalm 82:3–4As followers of Christ, we're called to advocate for the vulnerable and protect the oppressed. One of the most urgent needs today is among girls and young women in Lebanon. May-Lee Melki joins us with a powerful story of hope and a way you can make a difference. May-Lee Melki is a Lebanese-American advocate, legal scholar, and ministry leader dedicated to advancing justice and holistic transformation in the Middle East. She serves as the Strategic Engagement Manager at Heart for Lebanon, an underwriter of Faith and Finance. The Crisis Behind the HeadlinesIn a society shaped by shame-and-honor dynamics, without a biblical understanding of human dignity, refugee girls—especially Bedouin and Kurdish—are often seen as burdens or liabilities. Add to that multiple wars, a collapsed economy, and weak legal protections, and the danger becomes tragically clear: girls are exploited because they're seen as expendable. But Heart for Lebanon is stepping in not just to rescue—but to prevent. That may sound counterintuitive until you hear stories like Ferial's—a grandmother who joined a literacy class to model a different future for her granddaughters. After coming to know Christ through Heart for Lebanon, she said, “I can't change what happened to my daughters, but I can change the future for my granddaughters.”Prevention means investing in the whole family unit. It means addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical needs by offering:Christian counseling in their native languageNon-formal education programs that integrate biblical valuesSafe, holistic discipleship environments for moms, dads, and childrenCommunity development rooted in the GospelOne of the most moving examples is Alima, a 10-year-old enrolled in Heart for Lebanon's Hope Education Program. Her mother, under cultural and financial pressure, began pushing Alima to abandon school and enter into marriage. But because of the truth Alima had learned through Heart for Lebanon—truth about Jesus and her God-given worth—she found the courage to push back. Her bold faith not only protected her from child marriage but, through prayer and persistence, led to her mother's salvation as well. This is the ripple effect of prevention-centered ministry.Real Change Through Holistic MinistryThe key to sustainable impact is community transformation. The goal isn't to isolate and remove girls from danger—which can sometimes cause more trauma—but to reshape families and communities from within through Gospel truth. When fathers, uncles, and guardians are discipled alongside mothers and daughters, entire cultural norms begin to shift. That's what Heart for Lebanon is doing every day—breaking cycles of violence and shame with the hope of Jesus.Heart for Lebanon is inviting the Faith & Finance family to join them in this mission. A gift of $114 helps reach and protect three at-risk girls, offering them education, protection, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You can give by:Texting “FAITH” to 98656Visiting FaithFi.com/LebanonOur shared goal? Mary chats with Q90's very own Terra Koslowski on human trafficking, the trading in humans by those who themselves are slaves to human lust and greed. Whereas as a culture, we lived according to the maxim of loving people and using things, the trafficking and porn industry survives by using humans and loving things. Terra has been a committed educator, advocate, and trainer in the fight against human trafficking for over 20 years. In 2010, Terra founded “Stop the Traffick: Make Some Noise,” an annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day Rally in her hometown of Oshkosh, WI, which inspired similar events in surrounding cities. She has played a key role in the establishment of Damascus Road Project, a faith-based non-profit organization located in Oshkosh, WI since it began in 2009 and currently serves as the Education and Engagement Director teaching and training the community about human trafficking awareness and how to get involved. She also shares the morning show mic with Crash from 6-9am Monday - Friday. With the NFL Draft coming up in Green Bay in 2 weeks, the flow of fans, tourists and sex trade opportunists will far surpass the population of Green Bay. What is trafficking? What are some of the myths? How do people get "drafted" into it? Parents, the statistics on how your children are targeted are very sobering. Get involved! We tell you how.
