Matt and Dr. Eti Ben Simon team up to answer more audience questions today, and begin by delving into the subjective experience of time during dreams, exploring how our perception stretches and compresses during REM sleep and whether we can hack our dreams. They also explain the cognitive, emotional, hormonal, and immunological consequences of pulling an all-nighter, highlighting the dramatic impact on memory consolidation, stress hormones, appetite regulation, and immune function. The cardiovascular and metabolic repercussions are also addressed underscoring the serious health risks associated with chronic sleep deprivation. The discussion shifts to the societal bias favoring morning types, challenging the notion that evening types are simply lazy. Our hosts examine chronotypes, the “sentinel hypothesis”, and the importance of aligning sleep schedules with individual preferences for optimal health. Matt and Eti then draw the episode to a close by addressing the common phenomenon of night sweats, differentiating between pathological causes and the normal thermoregulatory disconnect during REM sleep. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Tired of untrustworthy protein shakes?  In today's episode, I chat with Dr. Mikala Albertson about menopause, hormone therapy, and all the things we need to know to feel better in midlife. We kick things off by debunking some common myths around hormone replacement therapy and why it's not as scary as we once thought. Mikala explains how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone affect our bodies and what happens when we lose them. And as a girl who is fighting some serious night sweats, you better believe I was tuned in.    We also dive into supplements, with Mikala sharing the four key ones she recommends. (I take the sum total of zero supplements, so this part was particularly interesting to me.) We discuss how to navigate the overwhelming supplement market and what to avoid. Spoiler: Not all supplements are created equal!   Then, we talk about ADHD in adults—the struggle is real. Dr. Mikala breaks down how many women might mistake stress for ADHD and how to figure out what's really going on. We also touch on the decision fatigue we face as we juggle midlife responsibilities.   If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the changes happening in your body and mind, this episode is for you. It's full of practical tips, real talk, and a little humor to help you manage the chaos of midlife.    Don't forget to tune in next week as we continue talking to Dr. Mikala about stress vs. anxiety, preventative care, and loving our bodies in midlife.   Thanks for listening!   All things Cynthia Yanof Everything I Wish I Could Tell You About Midlife by Mikala Albertson, MD MESSmerized with Mikala Albertson Episode 76 Dr. Albertson's Website

“I wake up cold, I who Prospered through dreams of heat Wake to their residue, Sweat, and a clinging sheet.” (The Man with Night Sweats, Thom Gunn, 1992) Never heard of Thom Gunn? Me neither! That's because straight people want to destroy us. Thom was one of the great poets of the 20th century, up there with Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes. But he's scarcely remembered in the 21st century, because he was: gay. (end of list) Join us as we explore Thom's leather-harnessed and LSD-fueled life as a poet of sexual revolution, formal precision, and gay liberation. In particular, Thom deserves to be remembered for the memorializing poetry he wrote about the AIDS epidemic and his many friends who lost their lives to the disease. My guest this week is Michael Nott, who has recently published a magnificent biography, Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Mel: Hi. Thanks for all you do and the info you provide. It's priceless! I've learnt so much. My question is about Black seed oil. What are your thoughts on its benefits? I'm constantly searching for natural ways to heal my skin and gut. Thanks again for your help.     Josh: Hello I have been trying to do several things to improve my overall deep sleep. I am on day four of the 7 day Cabral detox, it's the first time doing this. I am hoping that this can help also with my deep sleep. But I got prescribed some trazodone from my family doctor to help with my sleep. I do not struggle to fall asleep. I wake up occasionally throughout the night. I'm fairly good at getting 8 to 8 1/2 hours of sleep per night, but even with the trazodone, I still only get, one hour of deep sleep. Since I've been on the detox, I still take the trazodone, but I only get about 30 minutes of deep sleep. I'm doing the tracking through my I watch ultra. I know it's not the best tracker, but it gives me a general idea. honestly it feels like I haven't really been able to get good sleep.     Laurie: Hi Dr. Cabral, First of all, I want to thank you for all the support you provide so many people, I really value and trust your advice. My question is regarding healing from a surgery. I have a surgery which will leave a scar on my neck. Do you recommend anything in particular to help fade this scar, maybe red light therapy and/or other things. thanks so much!     Erin: Are there any studies that link ice chewing with a mineral deficiency or any other sort of deficiency? I have been chronically addicted to chewing ice for almost three years… in this time I've had two babies. I've always been told “you're low on iron.” Which was true during my pregnancies (a few points below normal) but since then they have returned to a normal level. I've done the iron supplements to no avail. Do I just need to break this bad “habit” or should I look into other underlying causes? What are your thoughts?     Samira: Hi doctor Cabral, What are your favoriete supplements or natural solutions to combat night sweats during perimenopause? I really appreciate you taking time to answer this. Thank you! Samira     Patricia: I was wondering why more supplement companies don't use glass, aluminum or paper products for packaging. Besides the health benefits, there are massive environmental benefits. Would EquiLife consider making the switch?   Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right!   - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3138 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept?
