I hate surprises. However, Oklahoma's pride and joy John Moreland surprised us with his latest album Visitor and I guess I'm okay with it. Moreland's gone back to a sparse acoustic instrumentation, unlike the electronic sound (which I also loved) on his previous release, 2022's Birds in the Ceiling. Recently, he took a page from his wife Pearl Rachinsky and musician (and recent tour buddy) Chris Staples' book, and quit his smartphone, took a social media break and stopped all touring for six months. What ensued was an incredible psychic change discovered through living electronically off the grid. Another thing that came about during experiencing this simplicity in life: an album full of songs. He would take long drives at night, bringing along his guitar and making field recordings of his new writing. All this culminated into his beautiful new record.Moreland talks about the process of unraveling himself from the smartphone, reconnecting with the acoustic guitar and getting to know himself again during this period of quiet. He talks about how playing live is very vulnerable for him to the point where he started taking (and loving) beta-blockers to stave off anxiety and adrenaline. He is very candid with his current thoughts on body image, he has been known to experience body shaming online after performing live. We also get into something that's been on my mind all year: is climbing the professional songwriter ladder worth it? Pretty sure we figured out the answer. Is Sunday just another day of the week? In this sermon from our "Making Disciples" series, Chris Staples argues that Sunday holds special significance for Christians. He dives into three key reasons why gathering together on Sundays is crucial for our spiritual growth and for making disciples.1. The Power of Jesus is Present:The Bible reminds us that when we come together in Jesus' name, his power is present (1 Corinthians 5:4). This creates an atmosphere where we can experience God's healing, miracles through the Holy Spirit's gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-11), and be built up in our faith (1 Corinthians chapters 7-11).2. Sundays Offer Opportunities for Discipleship:Sunday gatherings allow us to learn from one another (1 Corinthians 11:1) and function as the body of Christ, each part contributing its unique gifts (1 Corinthians 12:27). We can encourage one another in our walk with Christ (Colossians 3:16), be equipped through God's word (2 Timothy 3:16), and be challenged to hold fast to the faith (2 Timothy 4:3-4).3. Sundays Can Be a Place to Find Faith:Our gatherings can be a powerful witness for those seeking Jesus. The open and welcoming atmosphere (1 Corinthians 14:24-25) combined with the encouragement and support we offer (Hebrews 10:24-25) can create a space where people can encounter God's love and choose to follow him.Don't underestimate the power of Sundays! Listen to this episode and discover how actively participating in your church community can fuel your faith journey and empower you to make disciples for Christ.

In this episode of the "Making Disciples" series, Chris Staples dives into the exciting concept of building a Jesus culture church. He takes inspiration from Matthew 28:18-20, the Great Commission, and Philemon's letter to explore three key pillars of creating a community centred around Jesus and his teachings.1. See Potential in Everyone:Staples reminds us that Jesus saw potential in everyone, like the fishermen Peter and Andrew he called to be his disciples. He encourages us to follow suit, recognizing the unique gifts and abilities within each member of our church community.2. Give Ourselves:Building a Jesus culture church requires sacrifice and dedication. Staples emphasizes the importance of following Christ's example and giving ourselves wholeheartedly to serving others, just as Paul did for Onesimus in the book of Philemon.3. Live in the Power of the Holy Spirit:True transformation comes through the power of the Holy Spirit. Staples draws from Acts 1 and Romans 8 to underscore the importance of being led by the Spirit, putting to death the desires of the flesh, and embracing the truth that sets us free. This episode will challenge and inspire you to:* Recognize the potential within others in your church community.* Consider how you can personally contribute to building a Jesus culture.* Seek the power of the Holy Spirit to guide you in your walk of faith. Are you ready to be part of a church that reflects the heart of Jesus? In this sermon, Chris Staples shares on the importance of being sold out for unity without anger. He begins by talking about the issues with anger, including how it can lead to fixed opposition, limit God's blessing, and put our healing at risk. He then goes on to discuss four ways to avoid anger:1. Overlook offense. This means choosing to forgive and forget when someone hurts us.2. Cover with love. This means responding to anger with love, even when it is difficult.3. Correct carefully with a pure heart. When we need to correct someone, we should do it in a way that is loving and constructive.4. Consider others first. We should always put the needs of others above our own.Staples concludes by encouraging us to be sold out for unity without anger. He reminds us that the church is called to be a unified body, and that anger can only divide us. He also points out that anger is a sign that we are not trusting God to deal with our problems. If you are looking for a sermon that will encourage you to be sold out for unity without anger, then I encourage you to listen to this one. It is a powerful message that will challenge you and help you to grow in your faith.

Living Hope Douglas P.M.

Chris Staples asks if Jesus is a liar or Lord in his sermon on choices. He begins by sharing Matthew 16:13-17, where Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is. Peter answers correctly, saying that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus then tells Peter that he is blessed because he has received this revelation from God.Staples then goes on to share John 14:6, where Jesus says that he is the way, the truth, and the life. He says that no one comes to the Father except through him. This means that Jesus is the only way to salvation.Next, Staples shares Matthew 12:30, where Jesus says that whoever is not with him is against him. He says that whoever does not gather with him scatters. This means that there is no middle ground when it comes to Jesus. Either we are for him or we are against him. Finally, Staples shares Romans 10:9 and John 10:28. Romans 10:9 says that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. John 10:28 says that Jesus gives us eternal life, and that no one will snatch us out of his hand.Staples concludes by saying that we must choose whether or not we believe in Jesus. If we believe in him, then we must confess him as Lord and follow him. There is no other way to salvation. This is a powerful message that challenges us to make a choice about who Jesus is. Is he a liar, or is he Lord? If we believe that he is Lord, then we must live our lives accordingly.

We're beginning to get a sense of Chay's signature style. He began his career making made-for-TV secular movies, so he definitely understands the craft. He also seems to have celebrity friends, or knows how to book them. He's worked with Christian movie faves Tom Sizemore and Stephen Baldwin multiple times. In SLAMMA JAMMA, former baseball power hitter Jose Conseco has a prominent cameo, as does former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, whose appearance is so crucial to the film it transcends cameo and could be considered more of a supporting role. SLAMMA JAMMA's star is Chris Staples, a professional dunker known for his appearances in international slam dunk competitions. He shows off his genuinely incredible skills in this film as he portrays a formerly promising basketball star whose career was interrupted by a prison sentence. Like Tim Chay's other films, SLAMMA JAMMA has extremely competent qualities but tries to do so much with the story that it falls apart into confusing and ridiculous scenarios. We got a kick out of the film's complicated relationship with materialism, and how mean all the other characters are to the protagonist.
