This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. The episode concludes with Benny discussing his future plans for more music releases under different projects and emphasizing the therapeutic power of music in processing complex emotions. Listeners can explore Benny's work on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.BANDS: No Doubt, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Real Big Fish, Gwen and Eric Stefani, Megadeth, NSYNC, Metallica, Slayer, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine.VENUES: Makuhari Messe (Japan), Koos Cafe, The Chain Reaction, Madison Square Garden. Hemper: Unboxing of Hemper, Classic to Custom, Building a Smokers BusinessIf you've ever wondered what it takes to bring a product like a glass piece or accessory from an idea to the manufacturing line and scale it to 20k+ orders, this episode is for you.Blackleaf is joined in the studio by the young legends behind the Hemper brand, Bryan (founder,) and Thai (lead designer,) to discuss their steady growth alongside the industry for the past decade, their wins vs losses in terms of dropping a new piece and accessories every single month for years, how market demand drove them into taking over the cone industry on a side hustle turned overseas pre-roll empire, and of course, all of the crazy stories in between. For the uninitiated, Hemper is an herb accessory brand known for its high-quality smoking products, including glass b0ngs, rolling trays, and subscription boxes. The company was founded in 2015 with the goal of delivering curated smoking essentials directly to consumers. Hemper collaborates with artists and influencers to create innovative, limited-edition designs that appeal to both casual and experienced smokers. The brand has grown significantly, becoming a go-to source for affordable and stylish smoking accessories. The story of how Bryan essentially graduated from college on the East Coast while simultaneously building the dream team to scale Hemper is one that you truly can't miss. You'll also hear about Thai's background working with Hypebeast and Karmaloop on countless creative endeavors from creative design to music videos and more before Karmaloop's imminent demise and bankruptcy around the time Diddy got involved.A name of interest that comes up in this pod is Rama Mayo, an entrepreneur and visionary known for his significant contributions to the herb and music industries. He co-founded Hall of Flowers, a premier herb trade show, and Green Street, an herb brand agency. Before his ventures with the plant, Mayo spent 15 years in the music industry, working with renowned artists such as Jimmy Eat World, The Hives, and At the Drive-In, and co-founded the record label Big Wheel Recreation. You'll hear about Rama reaching out to Bryan only 15 months into the business running, insisting they come to Los Angeles to live in the same building as him and run their operation at the Green Street building. Bryan divulges crazy stories surrounding their time at Green Street and running with Rama, meeting essentially every key player in the LA scene pre-2020. One of the biggest topics of conversation in this episode is easily product manufacturing and merchandising. Thai and Bryan weigh in on a number of topics surrounding deciding which glass pieces and accessories to mass produce in the thousands to tens of thousands, doing all their CAD design in-house, which ideas are even worth pursuing, and what goes into developing a full product line for an MSO. The true gem of this pod is when Bryan and Thai talk about their cone side business that's driven them to set up shop in India. Getting in during a cone shortage around 2017-18, they were able to rapidly scale their factories overseas to now own and operate over a dozen. Bryan will divulge exactly how they were able to meet crazy demand in the millions and presently produce around 30-40% of the world's pre-roll cones.Any aspiring entrepreneur who loves the plant should sit down for this inspirational episode about how you can build massive empires in this industry without ever having to grow, trim, or cure anything.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with trailblazers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. Formed over 30 Years ago - back in 1993 - Jimmy Eat World was founded by Frontman Jim Adkins and his good friend since toddler-dom, drummer Zach Lind in Mesa, Arizona. The band toiled on the local indie scene as a sort of scrappy skate punk band for the better part of two years, self-releasing and split-releasing their own music with other bands before being discovered by a talent scout from the world famous Capitol Records. Jimmy Eat World’s Major Label Debut ‘Static Prevails’ was released in July of ‘96 to… mixed results. Despite their limited success - Capitol decided to give Jimmy Eat World another go, and the band would produce their second effort on the label; the album Clarity in February of 1999.If you’re a Jimmy Eat World mega-fan - you are likely aware of Clarity’s retrospective Cult Status as one of the most important emo records of all time, so of course - within six months of the release of the masterpiece that is Clarity - Jimmy Eat World was dropped by Capitol Records altogether in August of 1999. Quite literally back at the drawing board, the band members had to temporarily take part time jobs to keep the dream of Jimmy Eat World alive. Piece-by-painful piece, Jimmy Eat World slowly began working on their followup to Clarity - recording just the minimum viable product for each song idea - not letting a dollar go to waste. This is the story of Jimmy Eat World's 'The Middle', with newly unearthed audio from the band themselves!

SIX GOING ON SEVEN was and is a highly influential band that helped define a genre that bridged the gap between hardcore influenced emo and indie-rock. With their complex bass, guitar harmonies and sincere vocals, they were a force to be reckoned with. Often referred to as a “band's band”, Six Going on Seven came up alongside many of the household names we still discuss from the era: Jimmy Eat World, Hot Water Music, The Get Up Kids, sharing the stage with them and many others. Josh has continued creating music since SGOS ended, with an amazing array of solo albums and now onto his new band ATTEMPT SURVIVORS. Attempt Survivors is compromised of a who's who in the scene, guitarists Adam Marino and Matthew Kane, drummer Kyle Stevenson, and vocalist J. Bubbling under that surface, I have heard one name pop up more commonly than not:Joey Bradford. My first encounter with Joey's prowess came in the form of one of my favorite bands (my old band got to open for during the end of our run,)  a band called: Hell Or Highwater. These days, Joey is the guitar slinging, golf club swinging, rock record producing member of The Used. Living through the pandemic changed all of our lives, in one way or another. For some, it was coming to a realization that you didn't feel like your business or your career was your true calling, in which case it's possible you may have encountered someone like today's guest during your journey toward finding something more aligned with your life's purpose. For others, it's finding out that although you had a bunch of superficial or virtual interactions every day, you essentially felt alone. And maybe the friend or mentor you needed was someone you had never met, like in the form of a content creator, an author, or a podcast host. This is Brian Fink's story.Growing up, his family was in the shirt manufacturing business. Today, he's a talent acquisition partner who finds top-tier hires. One day, at a recruiting event, a candidate approached him and asked if he was one of the Finks who had owned the local shirt factory. It turns out, Brian's grandfather had given his father white dress shirts as a reward for making Dean's List at an HBCU, Albany State University, and to encourage him to continue doing well in his studies. This encounter led Brian to the realization that because of what his grandfather did for those students and during the civil rights movement, that Brian's striving to make sure things are fair and indivisible for everybody comes through family legacy.Brian has enjoyed a storied career. He's owned recruiting businesses, exited them, and helped others grow and exit their recruiting businesses. He has worked for companies like Amazon and AWS, Twitter, and Vanguard on his way toward his current work at McAfee. As an “intrapreneur”, as he calls himself, he lives out the values imprinted by his grandfather as well as one of his grandmothers, who taught him to value friendships and the communities you create and serve. This all sounds fine.. but Fine is a 4-Letter Word.About 20 years ago, Brian found out he suffers from anxiety and depression. In his search for understanding, acceptance, strength, and growth, he found himself drawn toward not only mentors in the workplace who create space for him to learn from mistakes and explore his talents, but also remote mentors – those authors, speakers, and podcast hosts. He reads voraciously to the point that he's not really up on “pop culture” because he prefers books to television and movies.Like the day he discovered by chance that his grandfather had been someone else's father's hero, there was one particular video he found that gives him incredible inspiration to find what he is looking for on the other side of fear. When you listen to Brian, you'll discover how he has found companionship and mentorship at a distance.Brian's hype song is “Sweetness” by Jimmy Eat World.Resources:Brian Fink's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianfink/ Will Smith's video that we discuss during the interview, “What Skydiving Taught Me About Fear”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFIB05LGtMs Invitation from Lori:In my special guide, 5 Easy Ways to Start Living the Sabbatical Life, you can discover, step-by-step, how you can stop settling for “fine” and look at your life with a fresh set of eyes. Even if, like many people in today's high-speed world, you're not in a position to take a month or year-long sabbatical. You know how you normally hear the disclaimer “Don't try this at home!” In this case, you CAN try this at home. And not just “try,” DO. Once you read it, you'll ✅

We kick off this series with a band near and dear to both humble hosts. A band whose live show made us both immediate fans back in 2004; the amazing British power trio MUSE! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by MUSE's complex yet accessible modern rock. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
