Jay Som is the moniker of Melina Duterte, a songwriter and producer originally based out of the Bay Area now living in Los Angeles. After producing music for other artists for so many years, she’s back with her fourth studio album, Belong, named for her quest to figure out her place in the indie music scene. While her tracks take you across various genre explorations from straight-up pop to downright experimental, she masterfully curates a cohesive experience. KEXP’s Dusty Henry spoke with Duterte about the expansive sound of the record, including collaborations with emo idols Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World and Hayley Williams of Paramore. “I’m always desperate for connection and understanding other people,” Duterte says in the interview. “When I get to have that experience, I feel closer to myself. That’s what this album helped me with.” Support the show: kexp.org/deeperSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nostalgia is one hell of a drug - and music is the best carrier of that magic elixir directly into our brains. While pretty much any song can be propped up as a totem of days past - sometimes songs feel specifically engineered to bring us back to a place and time. While many songs that we’ve covered over the course of this podcast distill the feelings high school awkwardness and teenage angst; (I’m looking at you, Simple Plan and Jimmy Eat World) there’s no song that declares itself as loudly and proudly as a nostalgic teenage anthem like the certified grandaddy of them all - Wheatus’ anthemic ode to lovable Losers everywhere - 2000’s Teenage Dirtbag. There's something quietly defiant about starting over in your late 30s. Picking up the sticks, joining a band, going on tour — when you thought maybe those days were behind you.But sometimes, reinvention is exactly what saves us.This week, I talk with drummer and podcast host John Huff, who started pursuing music seriously at 40. What followed was a wild ride — performing, recording, even touring — but also a heavy reckoning with ego, identity, and what it means to belong in a space you once watched from the sidelines. Before we dive into John's story, I reflect on “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World — a song I once thought was for teenagers, but now feels like an anthem for anyone still becoming. This episode explores:* The complicated psychology of late bloomers* Why ego flares when you try something bold and vulnerable* What no one tells you about the “tour comedown” and the emotional crash after success* How spirituality and self-awareness helped John reframe his career* And why the middle might actually be the most honest part of the journeyThis one is for the artists, the pivoters, the ones who started late and stayed anyway.About John:John Huff is a drummer, writer, podcast host, and creative human who believes in staying curious and honest no matter where you are in the process. His show, The John Huff Podcast, is a reflection of his journey through music, mental health, and personal growth. You can find him on Instagram at @johnwhuff.If this episode stirred something in you:Send it to someone who's been thinking it's too late.Or better yet — send them a song.Mentions & Links:* “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World* John Huff Podcast* Theme music by: Lincoln Parish* Subscribe to the show: comebacktoearth.substack.com Get full access to Come Back To Earth at comebacktoearth.substack.com/subscribe

(00:00-22:07) – Query & Company opens on a Thursday with Jake Query and producer Eddie Garrison discussing last night’s Indiana Fever blowout loss to the New York Liberty without Caitlin Clark. Also, they debate whether they would want Victor Oladipo back on the Indiana Pacers if he’s in good enough shape to play every night. (22:07-37:56) – Indiana Fever Head Coach Stephanie White makes her weekly appearance on the show and starts her conversation off with Jake with an update on Caitlin Clark. She evaluates where her team needs to improve in the second half, identifies the team’s resiliency as the thing she’s liked the most through the first 23 games, and comments on if anything is different for her with the All-Star Game being in Indianapolis this weekend versus if it wasn’t. (37:56-41:55) – The first hour of the program concludes with Jake sharing a sports story based out of Westfield that has gone national. (41:55-1:04:50) – Radio voice of the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Taylor, joins the program to discuss how the offseason went for him, his expectations for Tyler Warren in his rookie season, shares that he doesn’t think the lack of production from the tight ends last year was their fault, admits he’s curious to see how Nick Cross will play this season with it being a contract year, and believes that Lou Anarumo will let Charvarius Ward play on an island and blitz a lot more than the defense did with Gus Bradley. (1:04:50-1:17:20) – Mike Niziolek from the Bloomington Herald Times joins Query & Company to discuss Indiana’s decision to back out of its home and home series with Virginia, reminds people that the Hoosiers did get a little lucky last season with down seasons from a couple of the big opponents on their schedule, and explains the difference between what fans saw with Kurtis Rourke last year to what they will see with Fernando Mendoza quarterbacking the Hoosiers. (1:17:20-1:22:30) – Hour number two of the show concludes with Jake and Eddie giving away a pair of tickets for a listener to go see The Offspring with Jimmy Eat World at Ruoff Music Center next weekend! (1:22:30-1:46:36) – Tony East from Forbes Sports and Locked On Pacers makes an appearance on the program to weigh in on the discussion on whether the Pacers should bring in Victor Oladipo. Tony also comments on who impressed him so far in Summer League for the Pacers, evaluates the first half of the season for the Fever, and agrees with Caitlin Clark that her body needs to rest during the All-Star weekend instead of trying to play through something. (1:46:36-1:55:03) – Jake and Eddie give away a pair of courtside tickets for a listener to go see the TBT! In order to do so, the listener has to answer the trivia question about Indiana basketball correctly. (1:53:23-2:01:53) – Today’s show closes out with Jake Query being joined by Marc Dykton to preview the next three hours with Eddie as they fill in for JMV!Support the show: https://1075thefan.com/query-and-company/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Also, they discuss what they liked with the MLB All-Star Game last night. (22:15-37:14) – Jesse Newell from the Kansas City Star joins the show to discuss if the way the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Chiefs exposed a weakness that other teams haven’t seen, highlights some of the lucky wins that Kansas City had last season that masked some of the deficiencies of the team, and evaluates if the Chiefs have taken swings on guys in the draft because of the mindset that Patrick Mahomes can mask a ton of issues and make everyone better. (37:14-41:55) – The first hour of the program concludes with Jake revealing what NBA player could be bought out that could make their way to Indianapolis (again) with the Pacers having one roster spot open. (41:55-1:05:23) – The IndyStar’s Joel Erickson joins Query & Company to discuss some pre-training camp storylines that have his attention outside of the quarterback competition. Joel comments on which position group isn’t being discussed enough as a weakness on the team, tries to envision what the defense could look like this year with Lou Anarumo calling plays, and reacts to a story Jake tells him about his latest trip to Wisconsin. (1:05:23-1:17:37) – Josh Kendall from The Athletic joins the show to discuss the potential dilemma the Falcons could have if Michael Penix struggles this season with Kirk Cousins still on the roster, recaps how Penix performed last season in his limited action, identifies the defense as the weakness of this team right now, and shares his thoughts on MLB paying tribute to Hank Aaron last night during the All-Star Game. (1:17:37-1:24:16) – Hour number two of the show concludes with Jake and Eddie giving away a pair of tickets for a listener to go see The Offspring with Jimmy Eat World at Ruoff Music Center next weekend! (1:24:16-1:47:21) – Joey Graziano, Pacers Sports & Entertainment’s Vice President of Strategy and New Business Ventures, joins Jake Query to tip off the final hour of the show to discuss some of the events going on this weekend for the WNBA All-Star Game, reveals some activities that will be available for kids, admits that he’s looking forward to the first ever active player comedy show with Sydney Colson, and compares what the weekend could look like in relation to the NBA All-Star weekend. We talk about the various songs that were omnipresent over the airwaves including Blink 182's "The Rock Show", Sum 41's "Fat Lip", Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal", Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", Incubus "Drive", and so many others that gained a prominent place on our mix CD's way back in the day. Blood can give a wrestling match some much needed drama and memorable visuals. When wrestlers need to bleed during a match, they "run the razor" (quite literally) on their own flesh to achieve the desired effect. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Kevin Hare (Voices of Wrestling, 185 Miles South) play songs with blood, bleed, etc. in the title. Artists played include U2, Concrete Blonde, The New Pornographers, Agent Orange, Jimmy Eat World, Iron Maiden, Slayer, and many more. There's no better time to wear all white gear, because this episode is getting bloody!Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrewListen to Kevin on the 185 Miles South podcast: 185milessouth.comAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Mai 2025.

This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. The episode concludes with Benny discussing his future plans for more music releases under different projects and emphasizing the therapeutic power of music in processing complex emotions. Listeners can explore Benny's work on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.BANDS: No Doubt, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Real Big Fish, Gwen and Eric Stefani, Megadeth, NSYNC, Metallica, Slayer, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine.VENUES: Makuhari Messe (Japan), Koos Cafe, The Chain Reaction, Madison Square Garden. Hemper: Unboxing of Hemper, Classic to Custom, Building a Smokers BusinessIf you've ever wondered what it takes to bring a product like a glass piece or accessory from an idea to the manufacturing line and scale it to 20k+ orders, this episode is for you.Blackleaf is joined in the studio by the young legends behind the Hemper brand, Bryan (founder,) and Thai (lead designer,) to discuss their steady growth alongside the industry for the past decade, their wins vs losses in terms of dropping a new piece and accessories every single month for years, how market demand drove them into taking over the cone industry on a side hustle turned overseas pre-roll empire, and of course, all of the crazy stories in between. For the uninitiated, Hemper is an herb accessory brand known for its high-quality smoking products, including glass b0ngs, rolling trays, and subscription boxes. The company was founded in 2015 with the goal of delivering curated smoking essentials directly to consumers. Hemper collaborates with artists and influencers to create innovative, limited-edition designs that appeal to both casual and experienced smokers. The brand has grown significantly, becoming a go-to source for affordable and stylish smoking accessories. The story of how Bryan essentially graduated from college on the East Coast while simultaneously building the dream team to scale Hemper is one that you truly can't miss. You'll also hear about Thai's background working with Hypebeast and Karmaloop on countless creative endeavors from creative design to music videos and more before Karmaloop's imminent demise and bankruptcy around the time Diddy got involved.A name of interest that comes up in this pod is Rama Mayo, an entrepreneur and visionary known for his significant contributions to the herb and music industries. He co-founded Hall of Flowers, a premier herb trade show, and Green Street, an herb brand agency. Before his ventures with the plant, Mayo spent 15 years in the music industry, working with renowned artists such as Jimmy Eat World, The Hives, and At the Drive-In, and co-founded the record label Big Wheel Recreation. You'll hear about Rama reaching out to Bryan only 15 months into the business running, insisting they come to Los Angeles to live in the same building as him and run their operation at the Green Street building. Bryan divulges crazy stories surrounding their time at Green Street and running with Rama, meeting essentially every key player in the LA scene pre-2020. One of the biggest topics of conversation in this episode is easily product manufacturing and merchandising. Thai and Bryan weigh in on a number of topics surrounding deciding which glass pieces and accessories to mass produce in the thousands to tens of thousands, doing all their CAD design in-house, which ideas are even worth pursuing, and what goes into developing a full product line for an MSO. The true gem of this pod is when Bryan and Thai talk about their cone side business that's driven them to set up shop in India. Getting in during a cone shortage around 2017-18, they were able to rapidly scale their factories overseas to now own and operate over a dozen. Bryan will divulge exactly how they were able to meet crazy demand in the millions and presently produce around 30-40% of the world's pre-roll cones.Any aspiring entrepreneur who loves the plant should sit down for this inspirational episode about how you can build massive empires in this industry without ever having to grow, trim, or cure anything.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with trailblazers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These are songs you are probably familiar with, but maybe not these versions. In any case, we got ya covered!
