David Bazan is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Seattle. Over the past 30 years he has released dozens of collaborative and solo records as Pedro The Lion, Headphones and David Bazan.  This year he celebrates the 20th anniversary of Headphones with a remastered version of the 2005 release, complete with bonus tracks and additional liner notes by David Dark (out now via Suicide Squeeze Records). Joe asks David to look back into 2005 and share the motivation behind shifting from Pedro The Lion to a minimal synth based project and why he almost got talked out of it.  David shares some details behind the recording and why building a different drum sound for each song proved to be a fruitful endeavor. David tells us how he's working through a “burnout spot”, how his life has recently changed and why rehearsing once a week with Pedro The Lion has reinvigorated his playing. Joe and David geek on Beak, talk anti-Elon bumper stickers and we hear a few tunes. Seattle indie rock band Pedro the Lion gained a cult following in their early days, making Christian-adjacent music that saw lead singer David Bazan's reckoning with his faith and politics. After putting the project on hiatus for more than a decade, Bazan returned to the Pedro name in 2018 with the announcement that he'd be recording a five-album series with each record dedicated to a place he lived. Recently, Pedro the Lion put out the third record in the series, 'Santa Cruz.' Bazan talks with KEXP's Dusty Henry about making the record, learning to “re-parent” himself, and what he's learned about himself through the process of making these albums.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For 1990s and early aughts youth group alumni, Christian rock is often the source of embarrassment or shame - but does it have to be that way? The season finale of Rock That Doesn't Roll explores the idea that maybe, just maybe, the key to getting over angst about Christian rock isn't rejecting it or avoiding it, but coming to peace with the person you were when you fell in love with it. With insight from historian Randall J. Stephens (author, The Devil's Music), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of David Bazan, a Pentecostal pastor's kid-turned-indie rocker who spent decades running from his CCM past. Along the way, Bazan founded Pedro the Lion, and gained critical acclaim, but his fraught relationship with evangelical Christianity and the world of Contemporary Christian Music haunted him. In the end, Bazan suggests that one way to make peace with a CCM past is to learn to be “the billy of your actual hills.” Thanks for joining us for the first season - it's been an incredible journey. In 2005, Derek Zanetti had an epiphany. He was a weirdo. He already knew that, but he had a hard time accepting it was ok to be a weirdo. That is until a friend told him that he was "never going to be normal because you're a punk." A few years later, Derek would start The Homeless Gospel Choir, a solo folk-punk project that would later go full-on punk rock. And in 2017, he would release the song "Normal," which touched on this moment in his life. Our guest today is Homeless Gospel Choir frontman, Derek Zanetti. He tells us all about his oppressive religious upbringing that would make him feel shame, and hide his tapes. Speaking of tapes, we sift through his favorite current ska tape collection, which includes Fishbone, The Aquabats, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Suicide Machines. And tells us about being pals with several ska musicians, like Mike Park, Dissidente, and members of Suicide Machines and Reel Big Fish. We also talk about the Christian bands he still looks back at with fondness, like Five Iron Frenzy, The Dingees, MxPx, Pedro The Lion, and Danielson Famile. He tells us about what it was like to tour with Leftover Crack (Hint: It involves Scott Sturgeon getting beat up by cops on his 40th birthday). He also tells us about identifying with Peewee Herman as a kid and not being allowed to watch his show. And we discuss the greatest ska tape in his collection: Korn. Oh, and he's hitting the road with My Chemical Romance later this year! Great job Derek!Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. I'm incredibly excited about today's episode. I had the privilege to interview one of my favorite producers/artists, Mr. Aaron Sprinkle. Aaron is a singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer. He's done dozens of records that have been put out by Tooth & Nail Records (Anberlin, The Almost, Emery, Ivoryline, Dead Poetic, Copeland, MxPx, Hyland, etc.) as well as other classic albums (Acceptance, Every Avenue, New Found Glory, Pedro The Lion, Story of the Year, etc.) The list really does go on and on. Aaron shared some of his experiences making some of these records. He talks about the early days of Tooth & Nail and how he became acquainted with them as one of their most prolific producers. We talk about making the record "Phantoms" by Acceptance and how unique that time period was. We discuss the song-writing and creative prowess associated with the band Anberlin, and we even talk about social media. Aaron plans to release a new solo record in the near future, and we talk about how the landscape of the music industry has changed and how this will affect the new release. It was an honor being able to speak with Aaron, he really is one of my favorite producers and has been for two decades now. I've spent countless hours listening to his solo work as well as all of the bands he's worked with over the years. I really hope you enjoy this conversation as we peak behind the hood of what it's like to be a producer behind the scenes as well as in the spotlight. Enjoy!
