PHARR, Texas - Pharr International Bridge Director Luis Bazan is in Mexico City today for a meeting of the US-Mexico Binational Bridges and Border Crossings Group. At the meeting, Bazan will give an update on the second span project. Delegates from the United States and Mexican governments, the states of New Mexico and Texas, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Laredo, and Tamaulipas are participating in a regional meeting of the U.S.-Mexico Binational Bridges and Border Crossings Group. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss operational matters involving existing and proposed international bridges and border crossings and their related infrastructure and to exchange technical information as well as views on policy. The meeting will include a public session. This session will allow proponents of proposed bridges and border crossings and related projects to make presentations to the delegations and members of the public. “It's called the BBBXG and that stands for binational bridges and borders crossings group,” Bazan said. “And that is the binational delegation, the federal delegation that we've gotten in front of since day one. Any bridge, any entity that's out there trying to get their port, their projects, off the ground, that's the delegation that you go in front of in order to either proceed or be told that you have to several steps that to take.” The meetings alternate between Mexico City and Washington, D.C. Bazan said he attended the last BBBXG meeting March of 2024. He said the meeting in Mexico City should be a formality for Pharr. “We're moving forward. We're in that spot right now where we're just going there to update them, to let them know this is where the (second span) project stands. This is where it's going. This is where we are. These are our consultants. These are our engineers, project managers, and that way they can see that we've been doing all the legwork as we've been doing, as they've told us along the way, and have guided us.” Bazan says construction of the second span is expected to take up to 18 months and should be completed by the end of 2025. Bazan added: “We've been very fortunate. We've been very lucky that we've done things the right way, by the rules, as they say. But we've had strategic partners along the way, and that's what's helped us get to where we are now.” In an interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Bazan also spoke the City of Pharr's Avocado Festival, which is part of Fresh on the Border Week. He also praised the Texas Department of Transportation for hosting the Border Trade Advisory Committee meetings. Bazan attended the agency's latest meeting in Houston last week. Here is the interview.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.
PHARR, Texas - Luis Bazan, director of the Pharr International Bridge, has given an early preview of the 4th Industrial Warehouse Summit, which takes place in October. IWS is an event co-hosted by the Pharr Bridge Board and Pharr Economic Development Corporation. Bazan gave details of the next IWS when he attended a groundbreaking ceremony for LakeWay Produce's new cold storage facility in the Pharr Produce Park. In an interview, Bazan was asked to respond to a statement Edinburg Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Raudel Garza gave to the Rio Grande Guardian. Garza said 91 percent of all industrial warehouse space is full. “I can believe it,” Bazan responded. “As a matter of fact, back in late 2022 to early 2023 we got wind of some stories that were out there in the press about those specific numbers. We are pretty much at max capacity right now.” It was put to Bazan that by the time LakeWay Produce's cold storage facility is complete, the Pharr area would need more. “You're going to need more. You're going to need the next one and the next one,” Bazan said. “So, what we did as a bridge back then, solely as the bridge, was, we put together the Industrial Warehouse Summit. IWS. We're going on Part Four of the series this October. And what we're doing there is we're bringing in the financial institutions, the bankers. We're bringing in the industrial developers, the real estate guys, we're bringing in the investors and anybody else that's interested in seeing this area grow.” The message at the 4th IWS, Bazan predicted, will be to start building more warehouses. “W don't have enough. As we continue to push for more trade, as we continue to open the doors with more bridge projects and stuff like that, how are we going to be able to sustain that on the US side? How are we going to be able to sustain that on the Mexican side?” Bazan asked. “We need the infrastructure. We need water, we need energy, but more importantly, we need to space. We need warehousing. We need distribution. We need better logistics.” Bazan added: “We've been going at it for a long time. But it's not adequate enough for what we're trying to capture here in the future, particularly as we see some of the nearshoring or friendshoring opportunities that are coming as well. So, we're getting prepared for that.” To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
Seattle indie rock band Pedro the Lion gained a cult following in their early days, making Christian-adjacent music that saw lead singer David Bazan's reckoning with his faith and politics. After putting the project on hiatus for more than a decade, Bazan returned to the Pedro name in 2018 with the announcement that he'd be recording a five-album series with each record dedicated to a place he lived. Recently, Pedro the Lion put out the third record in the series, 'Santa Cruz.' Bazan talks with KEXP's Dusty Henry about making the record, learning to “re-parent” himself, and what he's learned about himself through the process of making these albums.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For 1990s and early aughts youth group alumni, Christian rock is often the source of embarrassment or shame - but does it have to be that way? The season finale of Rock That Doesn't Roll explores the idea that maybe, just maybe, the key to getting over angst about Christian rock isn't rejecting it or avoiding it, but coming to peace with the person you were when you fell in love with it. With insight from historian Randall J. Stephens (author, The Devil's Music), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of David Bazan, a Pentecostal pastor's kid-turned-indie rocker who spent decades running from his CCM past. Along the way, Bazan founded Pedro the Lion, and gained critical acclaim, but his fraught relationship with evangelical Christianity and the world of Contemporary Christian Music haunted him. In the end, Bazan suggests that one way to make peace with a CCM past is to learn to be “the billy of your actual hills.” Thanks for joining us for the first season - it's been an incredible journey. On today's episode of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer has a special episode from her recent trip to Santiago, Chile, with Carolina Bazán, chef-owner of Ambrosia and Ambrosia Bistro in Santiago. Carolina opened Ambrosia with her family in 2003. With the help of her partner, sommelier Rosario Onetto, she began the Hidden Kitchen movement in 2012, focusing on market produce and seasonal ingredients, which led to Ambrosia's new location and concept; a modern family bistro, outside of the classic gastronomic circuit, where fresh market products leads a seasonal menu that changes daily. In 2017, Carolina and Rosario opened their own restaurant, Ambrosia Bistro, located downtown with a very hip vibe and simple, seasonal menu. Carolina was named Best Female Chef by Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants 2019, and Ambrosia Bistro is currently #72 on The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants. Carolina is a contributor to Shari's new book, CHEFWISE: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon, Spring 2023). Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to have confidence in yourself; Speed Round, and Shari's Solo Dining experience at Ambrosia Bistro in Santiago, Chile.** Check out Shari's new book, CHEFWISE: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon, Spring 2023), now available at Phaidon.com, Amazon.com and wherever books are sold! #chefwisebook **Photo Courtesy of Carolina Bazan and Shari Bayer.Listen at Heritage Radio Network; subscribe/rate/review our show at iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify. In this very special episode of Holy Ghosting, we got to chat with everyone's favorite rogue CCM songwriter, Derek Webb of Caedmon's Call! If you were an evangelical Christian in the 90's/2000's, you know who we're talkin about. Caedmon's Call was THE band of youth groups and Bible colleges. And as it turns out, Derek is quite literally from a Long Line of Leavers (SEE WHAT WE DID THERE?!) and after a long and successful career in the Christian music industry, he decided to leave Christianity entirely. He's made a lot of music about his faith journey, and has been refreshingly open and honest along the way. p.s. Derek is on tour currently, debuting songs from his soon-to-be released album, The Jesus Hypothesis. Tickets and info at derekwebb.comThat said, we were super excited to sit down and chat with Derek about alllllllllll the things. We talked about his CCM days, his “fall from grace”, deconversion, solo career, and all that fun stuff! (We also heard a little from his adorable pup, Etta.) We got into all the nitty gritty of evangelical Christianity and were floored by his kind and graceful way of speaking about the messiness of faith and doubt and everything in between. And we talked about David Bazan (because if you're talkin about deconstruction, it always comes back to Bazan).Just trust us when we say we had the best conversation with Derek and he made us feel a part of something bigger and it made us feel thankful for YOU (our Ghosties!) and this rad community we're building. When we're confronted with a challenging task, we reassure ourselves it's probably achievable by saying, “Well, it's not brain surgery.” We say this because every single thing created by humans – from the sewer system to satellites - ultimately came from the human brain. And yet how the brain works remains among the most vexing and mysterious elements of our existence. Of course, not all humans are created equal. There is a small group of men and women for whom the human brain is not a complete mystery. These folks devote their professional lives to understanding and unravelling its secrets. One of these neuroscientists lives and works in New Orleans. Dr. Nicolas Bazan is the founding director of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at LSU's Health Sciences Center. He leads a team of 90 researchers in areas ranging from Parkinson's Disease to Traumatic Brain Injury. Dr Bazan's team publishes multiple research findings each year. And Dr Bazan himself is the holder of around 120 patents in the area of neuroscience and the treatment of neurological disorders. Notable even among all his other achievements in the field, Dr Bazan is the discoverer of a new class of biochemicals found in the brain, known as ELV's. In 2018, a year after he made this discovery, Dr. Bazan founded a local company, NeuResto Therapeutics, to research and develop the use of ELV's in the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury and stroke. If you've ever been in the hospital, or have visited anyone who's a hospital patient, you'll be familiar with an IV. Typically, one of the first things that happens to you as a hospital patient - or even in an ambulance on the way to the hospital – is you get an IV line inserted into your arm or hand. The reason for that is, intra-venous – which is what IV stands for – it means basically straight-into-the-vein - is the most efficient method of delivering fluids or drugs to someone who needs them. But delivering drugs to a patient through an IV is not an exact science. It relies on a human operator getting it right. In light of that, here are some sobering statistics. Medical errors are reportedly the 3rd leading cause of death in the US, after heart disease and cancer. 73% of medication errors involve what's called “push doses.” A “push” is the rate that a person administers a drug through an IV. 95% of IV push errors are the result of the drug being administered too quickly. That's why Tonia Aiken has invented a device she calls SafePush - which is also the name of her company. SafePush, the device, is a small, disposable piece of equipment that fits on the tip of a syringe or an IV and precisely regulates the flow of a drug in a way that doesn't let the person administering the dose push it any faster than the set rate. SafePush, the company, was launched in 2019 and is looking at potential market of 137 million devices per year. The cost of the device is $20 - about the same as a large pizza. 137 million-times-twenty is a lot of pizza. At some point we're going to have recalibrate how we think about and describe New Orleans. As well as describing ourselves as the home of Mardi Gras and the Hurricane, we could equally legitimately call ourselves something like, “world leader in medicine and medical technology.” Nicolas Bazan and Tonia Aiken enjoy Mardi Gras and cocktails as much as the rest of us (Tonia was Queen of Krewe du Vieux!), but they're giving us a whole other reason to be proud of living here. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at itsneworleans.com. It's been a minute. While I'm working on my manuscript, please enjoy this 2017 interview I recorded with David Bazan from Pedro the Lion. We recorded this interview in Bazan's car, between Living Room shows. It was incredible. The original introduction of this conversation was kept for nostalgia, context, and ease. Original show notes here. To get to the interview, skip about 8 minutes forward (dynamic ads may add 1 more minute). Thanks for listening. New episodes coming soon. In this episode, Andrew and John get granular. Joining the pod this week is Brandon Vedder. He's an award winning filmmaker known for his music videos, documentaries, and narrative films. In 2019 his documentary, Strange Negotiations, about David Bazan premiered at SXSW to critical acclaim. We talk about how he pitched the documentary idea to Dave, what it was like being on the road for the house shows, filming things by himself, youth group culture, and why he will always be interested in making films about religion. Then, Andrew and John rank the Pedro the Lion records and create their perfect Bazan set lists. Interview begins at 2:00, and the album rankings begin at 1:44:45.
