Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, The Lobster) Greek indie film 'Dogtooth' was his breakthrough hit that was nominated for an Academy Award. The film is about three siblings that are unable to leave their house because of their over-protective parents. It's a strange drama that can swing from horror to comedy in a single scene and definitely deserving of the title 'Odd'.We will take a deep dive into the film and discuss the many facets that surround it - is it a criticism on fascism? On patriarchal social structures? Or is it just about an insecure father who has a thirst for control? This is part of A New Winter Podcast Network.Website: anewwinter.comPatreon: patreon.com/anewwinterInstagram: @anewwinterTwitter: @anewwinterEmail: anewwinterpodcast@gmail.com Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/anewwinter. The Favourite stars Olivia Colman in an Oscar winning performance and Emma Stone in yet another average one. Rachel Weisz is there also and she's great as always. A weird greek guy who makes weird movies makes the most accessible film he possibly can. In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Each week we take the best and worst films from a filmmaker or franchise and discuss why one worked and one didn't. On the last episode when the hosts gave their best of 2018 lists it was mentioned neither had seen the latest by Yorgos Lanthimos - "The Favourite". That oversight has now been remedied and they offer a review of it as well as the social media buzzed movie of the moment Netflix's "Bird Box" starring Sandra Bullock. Afterwards the tried and true segments of movie news and recommendations make their return after an episode hiatus. Recommendations: "Love, Gilda", "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" Reviews: "The Favourite", "Bird Box"
Set in early 1800s England, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE FAVOURITE features Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz scheming against one another to become the preferred friend and adviser to Olivia Colman’s Queen Anne. In recommendations, Mark Pfeiffer appreciates the zaniness of a robot fighting a force controlling cell phones in S. Shankar’s science fiction-action-comedy 2.0. Paul Markoff is compelled by how Alex Garland explores the feelings between a man and an artificially intelligent creation in EX MACHINA. Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE FAVOURITE is, in the words of star Rachel Weisz, a bit like a “high-stakes MEAN GIRLS”: It’s the story of a woman in power challenged by a fresh young outsider, only it plays out in the halls of court rather than the halls of a suburban high school. In this half of our pairing examining the power plays and back-biting of “Girl World,” we look back first at Mark Waters’s MEAN GIRLS to ask whether the much-quoted Tina Fey-penned comedy is still totally fetch, and which of its insights about teen girl-dom circa 2004 still resonate today. Plus, some feedback on recent episodes and a discussion of other pairings we considered for THE FAVOURITE. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about MEAN GIRLS, THE FAVOURITE, or both by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
