Happy birthday to The Tortured Poets Department album! To celebrate, we begin this episode with a very fun challenge: Ranking every song off the entire TTPD + Anthology album! Sam felt self-counscious about his choices, Rachel reassured him that his opinions are valid, and together the sibs drank everytime they had the same song in the same spot! Turns out, Rachel and Sam both have the same #1 song. Can you guess which song it is? Then, the sibs delve into one of Rachel's most favorite Taylor Swift songs of all time. In fact, it's in her top 10! It's about time they tackle this one. But why did Taylor release this song AFTER the Midnights album came out. And was this the final straw for her relationship with Joe Alwyn, or just one fight that would later lead to the end of the relationship? Rachel cries and Sam tries to understand. Just FEEL something, babe! Even though this is Rachel's birthday episode, Sam finds a way to make it about him. Classic little brother move. How did it take us 112 episodes to finally break down one of our most favorite tracks from folklore? All we know is it was worth the wait. The spirit and lore and TWIST of it all for this song made this one of the more fun episodes we've discussed in a while. Of course, we couldn't just dive into the song right away. We had to spill some Taylor Tea.... Sam insists on going into yet another discussion about Reputation (Taylor's Version). Rachel seems to think TS12 is in the works, but Sam isn't so sure Taylor has enough inspiration to release that album yet. What do you all think? Our new shit brings Bon Iver and Billie Marten into the conversation. Sam is still on his month-long cleanse, so he brings a cocktail idea to pair with this song. Rachel, meanwhile, goes FULL IN. We reveal there's going to be a major twist in this song, but you have to wait until we get there to find out what it is (in the rare event you have no idea already). Rachel finds a way to connect Taylor's songwriting to her relationship with Joe Alwyn. Fine, we'll give it to her. Overall, we had a MARVELOUS time ruining everything this episode and we hope you enjoy!!!Check out our "new shit" playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5LOn9LRJ8lnvnCbpl6fKVG?si=68ca3032d3aa470bShare with us your thoughts on today's episode by sending an email to swiftandswigspodcast@gmail.com.Leave us a written review on the Apple Podcasts app!Follow and rate our podcast on Spotify!
And now it's time for something completely similar, folks. AKA we did another Ang Lee movie that one time. Anyhoo, this week the fellers discuss Ang Lee's wartime satire (?) Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Is this a case of a source material's tone being lost in the adaptation? Why is Steve Martin in this movie? How does Vin Diesel go up against expectations and give the best performance in this movie (not a knock, it's a good one)?! Filming at 120 frames per second - why? Did we need the romance that maybe should've been more obviously satirical instead of a seemingly straight-forward subplot? All this and more in this week's episode! Next week: Monks. We're getting excited for an upcoming potential Taylor Swift appearance at the iHeart Radio Music Awards! Sam is adamant that he won't be clowning for anything, but that doesn't mean we both won't be watching with anticipation! The episode goes off on a bit of a tangent about Taylor's style and who exactly is behind her fashion choices. Then we discuss Travis Kelce's potential retirement and what that may look like for us Swifties. Our New Shit segment had us both talking about the same album and artist: Lady Gaga and Mayhem! We both love this album so much and discuss our favorites from it. The song of the week has us praising and applauding Taylor for her genius! But, naturally, we dig a little deeper to reveal our theories on how this song is more than just being cheeky and revealing. Taylor Swift is a mastermind by hiding her anxious feelings about the unravelling of her relationship with Joe Alwyn. Let us know what you think about our thoughts! It's incredibly easy to overpraise something like Brady Corbet's The Brutalist just for its degree of difficulty and the unlikelihood of it even existing, but it's the real deal: a living Great American Novel plucked from time. Anne and Ryan digest the architectural drama, THE BRUTALIST starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and Joe Alwyn. Directed by Brady Corbet and written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, THE BRUTALIST follows a fictional Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Brody) as he immigrates to America and falls under the patronage of a wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Pearce). A critical hit and Oscar front-runner, THE BRUTALIST is undoubtedly epic in its ambition, length, and use of VistaVision, but is the film as monumental as the hype? Join us for a brutally honest discussion that takes some diversions into Wicked, Babygirl, Dave Eggers, Bradley Cooper, Funny Games, The Godfather, The Fountainhead and much, much more! THE BRUTALIST is currently in theaters.
Here it is, folks. The 650th episode (if you don't count all the other episodes) of the Empire Podcast, recorded live on Friday January 10th in front of a sell-out crowd at our spiritual home of Kings Place, London. And it's an absolute belter, in which Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Beth Webb show barely a passing awareness of the week's movie news, review A Real Pain, Babygirl, and Maria, and answer a bunch of questions from the audience. There will be singing. There will be plenty of film-related fun. And there will be guests galore, as Chris sits down with Get Away writer/star, Nick Frost; Beth chats with Babygirl star, Harris Dickinson, making his second live show appearance; Alex Godfrey pops up to have a natter with William Tell star, Claes Bang (and we all get mildly distracted by his coat); and Helen has a pow-wow with Joe Alwyn, star of The Brutalist, the film that might just win the Oscar race. All the guests can be found in one super-long section between 49:56 and 2:08:14, approx. As ever, thanks to everyone who made this evening possible, from the Kings Place team to our guests; thanks to you guys for coming and for continuing to support the pod; and thanks to cinema for being so goshdarn cinematic. Enjoy.

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer, Giovanni Lago & Brendan Hodges to review and discuss the latest film from Brady Corbet, "The Brutalist," starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach de Bankolé & Alessandro Nivola. The three-and-a-half-hour film (with an overture, 15-minute intermission, and epilogue) has generated waves of enthusiastic praise, critical dissection, and astonishment over its independent production (shot for under $10 million) for creating such a grand and epic cinematic experience since its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. What did we think of the story, its themes, the performances, cinematography, production design, and score? Is it about the journey or the destination? Please tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday here at Breakfast All Day, as we review a couple of major awards contenders. First, we rave about "The Brutalist," which will end up on both of our year-end top-10 lists. Brady Corbet's epic is a stunning achivement (and a lengthy one at 3 1/2 hours, including an intermission). Adrien Brody stars as a visionary architect who travels to the United States after World War II, seeking artistic freedom and success. Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn and Alessandro Nivola co-star. See it in 70mm if you can. In theaters now. Then, we catch up with the formally daring "Nickel Boys." RaMell Ross' film, based on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer prize-winning novel, tells the story of two young black men who become friends at a reform school in 1960s Florida. Our fellow critics adore this movie, but we found its first-person perspective distancing (and, for Christy at least, headache-inducing). In limited release now and expanding to more cities in upcoming weeks. Finally, we did our last Movie News LIVE! of 2024 on Friday. Lots to talk about including the teaser for James Gunn's "Superman," Oscar shortlists, "Mufasa" vs. "Sonic 3" at the box office this weekend and more. If you've been able to join us at all this year for our livestreams, thank you for taking some time out of the middle of your day, wherever you are in the world! We'll squeeze in one more podcast episode for you early next week before Christmas and New Year's. 'Til then, thanks for joining us and hope you're enjoying the holiday season!
