We've reached the end of July, and believe it or not, it's the first month this year with five Tuesdays. Don't believe me? Well, look at a calendar. No, no, the Julian Calendar. It's July, for christsakes! Sorry, sorry. Right, where was I? Oh, so it's a listener pick this week, and we've got a good one. Listener Matthew brings an offering of a horror outing from last year featuring Hugh Grant at his most charming and most creepy in a film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as Mormon missionaries, this film raises philosophical, spiritual, and existential questions - all while scaring the bejesus out of us. I said, “be-jesus,” not… Oh, nevermind. Brother Matthew is in the room with us right now. Let's all bow our heads and say a little prayer before we enjoy this delicious-smelling blueberry pie… Do you have a moment to discuss Heretic? It's the summer of ‘25 and we're heading to Syracuse, New York, in search of an act of reciprocal pleasure. In the Salt City, we discover the latest film from American High, a sultry and silly affair directed by Jillian Bell in her directorial debut, and written by Bell, Liz Nico, and Jules Byrne. When naive high school senior Abby vows to wow her crush Max by performing his favorite sex act, she needs the tutelage of stripper Santa Monica in order to do the deed and seal the deal. Meanwhile, Santa Monica is staring down her own hairy scenario as ownership of her strip club dangles in front of her. Starring Abby Morelos, Chloe Fineman, Matt Cornett, Paula Pell, Natalie Morales, and Charlie Day, this flick premiered at SXSW back in March before being released by Hulu in May. But does this teen comedy satisfy our hosts equally? Or is it all risky business and no reward? Join us as things get hot and heavy with Summer of 69! There was a time when being a member of the ACLU meant defending the speech of people you despised—not because you endorsed them, but because the principle of liberty mattered more than comfort. I joined for that reason. I wasn't virtue signaling. I was pledging allegiance to the Constitution, the real one—not the cosplay version people wave when it suits them. Now? The ACLU defends speech selectively. The Human Rights Campaign operates more like a branding arm of one political party. And free speech? Somehow that's been redefined as violence. Ironically, actual violence is often written off as passion or protest.I'm not saying this in a red hat. I'm saying this as someone who remembers when progressives stood for open discourse. I grew up in Hawai‘i surrounded by every possible kind of person—different skin, different languages, different politics. They were still mine. I worked with Frank Burns, the general who wrote “Be All You Can Be.” I was close to his son, Scott. I loved Hope O'Keeffe, a brilliant constitutional lawyer. These people weren't footnotes. They shaped my beliefs.Someone once said I was trying to get myself on the SPLC watchlist. It hurt because it felt a little true. I've been next to too many counternarratives for too long—from New Media Strategies to memes.org to spelunking rabbit holes on forums nobody talks about in polite company. I don't think I'm flagged. But I'm filtered—soft-shadowbanned, algorithmically sidelined, quietly removed from the conversation without anyone needing to tell me so.And the language—God, the language. I watched “racist” morph from describing segregationists to being tossed like a beer can at people like me: 55, white, straight, Christian, gun-owning, ex-ACLU donor. “Fascist” now applies to suburban parents who speak up at school board meetings. These words used to be magic spells. Now they're wallpaper. And when every act is fascism, when every opinion is white supremacy, the terms lose meaning. The public square becomes a theater of accusation. And many of us? We quietly walked away. The left won the culture war, sure. The right didn't argue. They built something else. While the activist class raged on TikTok and MSNBC, the right unplugged. They stopped donating. They stopped attending. They didn't march. They starved the beast. Defund NPR? You don't need a vote—just stop the grants that trickle in through CPB, NEA, USAID, and other soft-funding channels. NPR says it only receives 2% of its budget from the federal government. But insiders know better—those streams run deep.Same for universities. You can't shut them down outright—it would look authoritarian. But redefine their worst excesses (and many now qualify) as violations of civil rights law—like antisemitism—and you can cut off Title VI funding. You don't need bayonets. You need bean counters. The left made everything sacred: identity, language, tone, even silence. The right made nothing sacred except autonomy. The right didn't want to control cities. They wanted to starve them—cut off food, fuel, infrastructure—and watch the bloated coastlines retreat. The right doesn't dream of invading blue cities. They plan to outlast them. And still, the same spells are being cast: bigot, fascist, hater, Hitler. But the spell is broken. Because I see the restaurant going dark. I see the check left unpaid. I see the waiter backing away. And I see the activists arguing about the pronouns on the dessert menu.I'm not here to storm anything. I'm not calling for a new party, a movement, or revolt. I'm just the watcher. I was here when speech was sacred. I was here when dissent wasn't pathology. And I'll still be here when the lights go out and the last credit card gets declined.

In 1991, Daniel Petrie, the director of Beverly Hills Cop and Turner & Hooch, brought a script he'd co-written with David Koepp, based on the novel by William P. Kennedy, to the big screen. Starring Sean Astin a year before he had everyone chanting his name in Rudy and Wil Wheaton a year after he'd beamed off the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this film had its finger on the pulse of moviemaking trends. When the red dawn sees an elite boarding school under siege by Colombian terrorists, leaving the students running scared from lethal weapons, these kids must stand and deliver to defend their home away from home alone, or risk dying hard and ending up in the dead poets society. With Louis Gossett Jr., Denholm Elliott, Jerry Orbach, R. Lee Ermey, and Andrew Divoff rounding out the ensemble cast, this coming-of-age action flick was a modest success at the box office, but quickly forgotten, finishing 87th at the ‘91 box office. But old playthings never die, they just sink to the bottom of the toybox, so we're digging up and dusting off Toy Soldiers - and we're gonna play with it for a little bit. In the remote fishing village of Petit-de-Grat on Isle Madame, Nova Scotia, where the sea is both a livelihood and a way of life, tensions over lobster poaching exploded into one of Canada's most shocking acts of vigilante violence. On the morning of June 1, 2013, 43 year old Phillip Boudreau, a notorious small time criminal known for stealing from fishermen's traps, was brutally murdered on the open water by men from his own tightly knit community. His killing shattered the village, exposed deep fractures between justice and revenge, and left a haunting question behind: how far can people be pushed before they take the law into their own hands? Taking the Amtrak Downeaster from Boston North Station to Old Orchard Beach Maine. It would have been great, but they canceled the midday 11:25 am train so we had to drive. Still, enjoyed steamers, scallops, lobster, the big wide beach at low tide, the nightlife of singer songwriters and rides flying in the air. A fun carnival atmosphere stayed at the Beach Motel. Our journey today on GoNOMAD explores the challenges of traveling from Boston to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, particularly when the cancellation of the midday train disrupted our plans to take the Amtrak Downeaster. Instead of the anticipated train ride, we opted to drive, that, while practical, shifted our experience. Despite this setback, we found joy in the local cuisine, indulging in steamers, scallops, and lobster, and relished the expansive beach at low tide. The vibrant nightlife, featuring talented singer-songwriters and thrilling old-time carnival rides, added to the excitement of our stay at the Beach Motel. We also discuss the broader context of New England's rail service improvements and future developments, highlighting ongoing projects that aim to enhance train travel options in the region. The story also details the proposed Lunatrain, a sleeper service between New York and Boston as well as the additional trains added to the Hartford Line between New Haven and Springfield MA and the newest commuter rail, from Boston South Station to New Bedford and Fall River MA.
Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cashed in on teaming up over the past decade, from Coogler's debut Fruitvale Station, to Black Panther, to Creed. This 2025 film, their fifth collaboration, sees Coogler double down on Michael B. Jordan - quite literally. Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, this genre-defying film sees Jordan play twin brothers who seek to open their own juke joint, only to be threatened by a clan of vampires. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo and introduces singer Miles Caton in his first film role. Earning $365 million at the box office to date, it is one of the best-received films of the year so far and an early contender for an Oscar nomination. Chronic bee paralysis has been in bee populations for thousands of years, but cases are rising in the UK and it's estimated up to two percent are affected. The disease is not notifiable, so doesn't have to be reported, and bees can have the virus and not show symptoms, so it's prevalence is difficult to ascertain. We speak to Professor Giles Budge who's working on the disease at Newcastle University. As part of our week-long look at shellfish we visit Bridlington in East Yorkshire the largest lobster port in Europe, There are no quotas for catching crab and lobster and most of it is exported. After concerns about the rising number of abstraction licences, we speak to a water management expert who advises farmers in on the driest parts of the country.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

***UPDATED AUDIO TRACKING*** in beef's hurry to leave town and add a cold open he messed up tracking.... it is fixed now! enjoy this cast on your way to the beach maybe??? Fifty years ago, the summer blockbuster was born. Director Steven Spielberg, in his second official turn at the helm, adapted Peter Benchley's best-selling novel about a New England resort town plagued by a great white shark. Despite production delays and budget overruns, this $9 million “high-concept” thriller starring Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfus took a $477.9 million bite out of the box office and became the highest-grossing film of all time, until the release of Star Wars two years later. Spawning multiple sequels and imitations, this film remains the undisputed master of the seas. But will our hosts fall hook, line, and sinker for Jaws? Or are we going to need a bigger podcast to chew it up and spit it out? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu's The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean's Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade's breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford's The Searchers by way of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle? Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father's wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud? If you thought lobster rolls were just food, think again. They're fashion now, too! On The Debbie Nigro Show, Debbie caught up with her “sister from another mother,” Andrea Anthony — the iconic entrepreneur behind Lunch Lobster Roll in Amagansett and Southampton — to talk lobster love, restaurant buzz, and lobster pajamas (yes, really). I try and track the latest trends and surprisingly discovered ‘Lobster Fashion' was trending? Wow, I was seriously behind the lobster claw curve on this one! Then I searched online to see what I could find out and came upon endless items of clothing bearing ‘Lobsters'! Sweaters, purses and pajamas to name a few. I was talking about the trend on my radio show and mentioned I should probably check in with my lobster business gal pal and see what's up. So, after the show I texted Andrea Anthony and asked her if her ears were ringing, and she texted me back a photo of her Lobster Pajamas! I cracked up and had to know more and invited Andrea to pop by my radio show. It all started Andrea said, when the upscale kids' clothing brand Pink Chicken approached her with a fun idea: co-branded lobster pajamas using her famous restaurant's logo. The limited-edition $65 sets sold out. Sensing these comfy lobster pajamas had legs at a more affordable price for more people Andrea partnered with TJ Maxx for them to be sold at stores across the country. The only problem? Andrea has no idea where they ended up! “People keep asking me where to buy them and I'm like... I have no idea! So I thought—why not turn it into a lobster pajama hunt?” Now it's a full-blown scavenger hunt with a tasty prize. First 5 people who find her lobster roll pajamas at TJ Maxx and report back to her on either her Instagram or Facebook win gift cards to Lunch Lobster Roll. (BTW Andrea monitors every single social comment herself and responds - and she's been doing that personally forever) But Andrea isn't just about fun and fluff. She's a master of smart brand partnerships! Big Bites of News from Andrea Anthony and ‘LUNCH Lobster Roll'! Chopt Collaboration: Her famous lobster salad is now in select Chopt locations, including Penn Station and the Upper East Side, in a special summer salad collab featuring their ginger sesame and creamy Caesar dressings. Hamptons Happy Meal at American Cut: Get 2 lobster rolls, truffle fries or Caesar salad, and a martini for just $28 from 5–7 PM. The full crew is even doing a ticketed steak + lobster dinner at Andrea's Southampton location July 18–19. Lobster Roll Sliders: For the budget-conscious, Lunch Lobster Roll offers two sliders, fries, slaw, and a drink for just $22–$23 — the best deal in the Hamptons! Andrea is genuinely one of the warmest coolest gals I've ever met. Great woman and brilliant businesswoman. I love her! Enjoy this fun podcast of the live conversation with Andrea Anthony on The Debbie Nigro Show. Now let's all try and help her find her Lobster Pajamas at some TJ Maxx. Ha!

But for a moment in the late-90s, they burst out of gift shops and into investment portfolios as America went crazy over Legs the Frog, Pinchers the Lobster, and the rest of the plushie pals.Behind this bean-stuffed market bubble hid a mysterious salesman with a chip on his shoulder named Ty Warner (the P.T. But there wasn't such a happy ending for most speculators when the market turned from (Snort the) bull to (Brownie the) bear, wiping out millions.Find out how Beanie Babies helped launch eBay, why you should never trade your Bucky the Beaver for a cupcake, and why Beanie Babies is the best idea yet.Subscribe to The Best Idea Yet for the untold origin stories of the products you're obsessed with — and the bold risk takers who made them go viral.Episodes drop every Tuesday, listen here: https://wondery.com/links/the-best-idea-yet/—-----------------------------------------------------GET ON THE POD: Submit a shoutout or fact: https://tboypod.com/shoutouts FOR MORE NICK & JACK: Newsletter: https://tboypod.com/newsletter Connect with Nick: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolas-martell/ Connect with Jack: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jack-crivici-kramer/ SOCIALS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tboypod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tboypodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@tboypod Anything else: https://tboypod.com/ See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
