Matt, Michael, Charlie, and Caitlin got reservations at Dorsia to do some fine dining and chat about American Psycho, often cited as "a movie about a misogynist, directed by a feminist." We talk about yuppie misogyny, consumerism, and nihilism, and we quote the movie in our best Patrick Bateman voices. We also dish out some high school stories, so be prepared to be transported back to 2006-2007. Tangents include: Lady MacBeth, business cards (obviously), juice, Crocs, Ed Gein, and Ed Kemper.

David “Gribs” Gribble grew up in Brisbane, AU and began studying photography at night school. He became a photo assistant, moved to Sydney, and found a job at a local film studio making commercials and low-budget movies. At the time, in the 1970's and '80's, Australia was experiencing a resurgence of its cinema, known as the Australian New Wave. The government provided tax incentives for ordinary people to invest in movies, and established the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. The country's film industry was jump started, and the genre known as Ozploitation was born. Gribs learned camera operating on the job. His first feature film was The Man From Hong Kong, followed by the Aussie cult classic race movie, Running On Empty. The film Monkey Grip won some awards, and Gribs was asked to shoot his first American movie, Off Limits, starring Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines. He thinks that working with American actors was different than working with Australian actors- the Americans seemed to be more prone to distraction and sensitive about their appearance. Gribs learned to “light faces, not places” since that's where the dialog comes from, and flattering actors by telling them how great they look in a particular spot, to give them tools to make themselves look better on screen. He also learned that in lighting, it's better to work with a broad brush and shoot before you're ready- as a cinematographer, don't indulge yourself too much. The movie Cadillac Man was challenging to shoot for a few reasons. The movie takes place almost entirely in one location- at the car dealership. Gribs had to combat flat lighting up against the walls of the office, as well as dealing with reflections from shiny cars and large windows. Director Roger Donaldson shot take after take, because actor Robin Williams was constantly improvising off script. Gribs found him extremely funny, and says there was so much extra footage of Williams that was cut out, it could probably make another movie. Gribs also discusses working with Anthony Hopkins on The World's Fastest Indian, Jean-Claude Van Damme on The Quest and shooting the Jesse Stone movies starring Tom Selleck. Russ and Jared are back to tackle The Last Thing He Wanted (2020), starring Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Rosie Perez, Edi Gathegi, and Toby Jones. It's a political thriller loosely based on the Iran-Contra Affair that'll have you on the edge of your seat - or asleep in your recliner, depending on your caffeine intake. Join the guys as they try to untangle the movie's convoluted plot and wonder why Ben Affleck is always lurking in the shadows (just like in real life).
This week, we discuss Mary Harron's American Psycho! Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis and starring Christian Bale accompanied by Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis, and Reese Witherspoon among others, American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman (Bale), a New York Investment banker by day who is a serial killer by night. There is an idea of American Psycho. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real movie. Only an entity. Something illusory. And though it can hide its' cold gaze, and you can watch it and see colors with your rods and cones, and maybe you can even sense that the cinematography or tone of the film suits you, it simply is not there. But... Is American Psycho Good?If you'd like to suggest a film or film franchise, or if you'd just like to say hello, you can reach us at biigpodcast@gmail.com, @biigpodcast on Twitter, or @butisitgoodpodcast on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube! We're thrilled to welcome This Had Oscar Buzz co-host (and TWoP Idol co-recapper emeritus) Joe Reid to the podcast to dig into American Dreamz, a satire of both competitive singing shows AND mid-aughts American politics that does one thing quite a bit better than the other -- and puts all three of us in mind of better movies like Dr. Strangelove and Dick. Cheney slapstick, peak Chris Klein, when Hugh Grant's doing more than he should, the custody battle over the set's one Dick Casablancas wig, Quaid as figurative Ken doll, the return of positive Ebert, and great galoot work all figure in our discussion of a movie we didn't hate...but also barely remember watching. Slim the mailman joins us in a bumper episode as Mia, Brian and Gemma answer listeners' questions about awards season, from the Oscar category we'd like to see added to whether nominees are paid for all their campaigning to when genre films will have their day. We check in on both the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and Asian Film Award winners, and look back at how the Letterboxd buzz out of Everything Everywhere All at Once's world premiere predicted the film's eventual Oscar wins. Please participate in The Letterboxd Show Feedback Survey! We also give Willem Dafoe a (heavy!) most-watched trophy and reveal the winner of the award for Biggest Letterboxd Oscars Bump (spoiler: people are watching women talking!). Then Jack's Facts and Sophie Shin join us for the official Best in Show wrap party, and where we share the films that captured our hearts this season. There may also be a weepy acceptance speech or three. P.S. We'd love to hear your thoughts about Best in Show and all our podcasts. Welcome to “Multiplex and Talent Show” on the What's The Matter With Me? Podcast This week, I used my wheelchair to go to the multiplex in Dublin and the talent show in the auditorium at my children's elementary school. The movie we saw was "Inside" with Willem Dafoe and the elementary school talent show had a few truly bizarre, fun memorable moments.. Using my wheelchair made it possible. Spicy Nut and Pretzel Mix Whipped up the David Lebovitz snack mix because our dinner guest brought an extra pie. I think you could say it was burnt, but it's still so addictive that it didn't matter - it all gets eaten every time Welcome in Shout out to Canada. I watched the Sharks lose to the Oilers last night so I gotta give a big Shout out. to Canada I heard the band Big Blood from South Portland, Maine on the radio during KFJC's Female Takeover a marathon of music created by female artists - shout out to cousin Jimmy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDmrH488oS8 Big Blood The song I heard was "Reproduce and Get Dirty which is like a great summary of all living things. It has great slide guitar and a wonderful vocal melody that soars at times and is also more intimate other times Big Blood has a lot of free music {including the aforementioned track) on the Free Music Archive At the Multiplex I went to the Regal Hacienda Crossing Spaceport in Dublin. It is a multiplex at an outdoor mall Shout out to Anjela the hair-cutter who told me she went to movies there when she was in high school I went with Nami to the movie in my wheelchair. I like going to the multiplex in a wheelchair because multiplexes are big and huge and I don't know if I'd be able to make it otherwise We saw the movie Inside with William Defoe It's about an art burglar who gets trapped inside a smart house which more-or-less tortures him and features the destruction of millions of dollars worth of of art and furniture. Kids Got Talent I went to the children's talent show in my wheelchair, but beforehand i emailed ahead of time to ask if they would save a space for me, which was no problem. they saved a space for me at the front of the room and a really sweet girl wearing a tap outfit helped me to get settled There were great embarrassing song and dance routines, solo Hamilton, martial arts, gymnastic cartwheels I & II, Water Under The Bridge interpretive dances and SO much more. It was more interesting than I thought it would be. My son told me he had a crush on a girl who did a gymnastic routine. When his mom asked why, he said it was because she "ran really fast" "A pint is a pound the world around" https://twitter.com/deerhoof/status/1637952008039849984 Indie rockers weigh in Only one thing left subscribe to the whatsthematterwithme podcast and you'll get a very fancy nice email version of the podcast every time a new episode comes out its very handsome be sure to click subscribe right at the top of the page, just a name and your email is all we need to get goin and then youll always get the selfie This Week's Selfie In the studio

In a new feature film called Inside, an art heist goes terribly wrong for a thief named Nemo. Nemo is played by the world-renowned actor Willem DaFoe, well-loved by the art world already for his performance in the 2018 film At Eternity's Gate, where he played Vincent van Gogh. In the ultra-contemporary plot of Inside, Dafoe's character Nemo is not a world famous artist, but rather an anonymous robber who's after a self-portrait by Egon Schiele. The artwork is not where it is supposed to be inside the ultra-modern penthouse he's just broken into. Carefully laid plans seem to be going awry. Precious minutes are lost. Then, the alarm system locks down, leaving Nemo sealed off from the world while in the center of Manhattan. If you haven't seen Insideyet, be advised that there are spoilers scattered throughout this episode. So, Nemo is now stuck in a resplendent box of glass, steel, and concrete, with little more than some exotic fish, luxury furniture, and a multimillion dollar art collection. On-screen alone for practically the entire film, Dafoe's character begins to battle against the degradation of his body and spirit—to deal with the latter, the artworks in the apartment become something like a central character, as does Nemo's own blossoming creativity. The artworks in the apartment, which were carefully curated, drive the plot and deepen the themes. There is a 1999 work by Maurizio Cattelan, a large photograph of a man taped to the wall with tons of duct tape, sarcastically titled A Perfect Day. There is also David Horvitz's 2019 neon that hangs over the character's struggle, with a sort of torturous prescience: it says “All the time that will come after this moment.” To build out the idea of a real art collection, there are more emerging stars. Kosovan artists Petrit Halilaj and Shkurte Halilaj's work for the 2017 Venice Biennale is worn by Nemo when the penthouse's temperature drops. And a video work by Julian Charrière and Julius von Bismarck from 2016, which was filmed at the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, is among the artworks in the film that conjure questions around humanity, planetary survival, and climate crisis—which is an undercurrent theme of the movie. On this week's episode, European editor Kate Brown speaks to the film's director Vasilis Katsoupis and art curator Leonardo Bigazzi about this captivating and claustrophobic feature, which had its world premiere at the Berlinale film festival last month and is about to hit theaters in the United States.
My Turn returns to the well of beautifully shot, dreamlike psychological horror with Robert Egger's The Lighthouse. The film follows two lighthouse keepers, played by Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, as they descend into madness while tending a remote lighthouse. The film, and our hosts, ponder the role of masculinity, labor, and eldritch horror in The Lighthouse's nuanced depiction of the two worst men you can imagine. Following a brief question bucket, Cado picks our next movie, and Patrick, true to The Lighthouse's subject matter, absolutely loses his shit about it. Hosted on Acast.
