Abdul El-Sayed is going to be the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan, but the victory was much closer than it looked when I initially planned to call it. With 23 percent of the vote counted, Haley Stevens was barely leading in Oakland County, which she represents in Congress, and the outstanding votes appeared to favor El-Sayed. I thought he was heading toward an eight-to-ten-point win. Instead, the margin narrowed to about 1.4 percent. Barring some miraculous vote drop out of Detroit, El-Sayed wins, but this wasn't an overwhelming progressive victory. The polling miss is the polling miss. Congressional polling is never the most reliable. What's strategically telling is that much of the expectation for a blowout came from El-Sayed's own campaign, which released internal polling showing him ahead by 15 points. That obviously didn't happen. Can you question the wisdom of releasing those numbers? You can. You can question that wisdom.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.I still got my prediction wrong. I picked Stevens by five, so allow me to eat the mistakes. My prediction was closer to the final result than El-Sayed's internal polls, but a loss is still a loss. I believed Mallory McMorrow's female voting bloc would break more heavily for Stevens. I said from the beginning that McMorrow would decide this race; I just didn't realize it would be her ghost bridging the gap between the other two candidates.El-Sayed started this three-way dance as the owner of the progressive lane, and he owned the issues that mattered in Michigan. It didn't matter how folksy the Stevens campaign tried to make her. El-Sayed won, the establishment lost, and progressives deserve to celebrate. Raise a PBR and let your tears stain your unused college degree. Progressive listeners can dance on my shame because they've earned it.But the lesson for progressives is the opposite of what it was on The Real World: They need to stop getting real and start getting polite. Their movement isn't overwhelming. I don't care how fired up Michigan is about Israel, Medicare for All, or any other progressive policy. El-Sayed needs Haley Stevens voters if he's going to defeat Mike Rogers. He needs to reach out and say, “Let's stick it to ‘em… together,” because progressives aren't going to get there by doing it exactly their way forever. This is still a big day for progressives, but the final margin changes what it means. It wasn't proof that they can squash the establishment on their own. It was proof that they can win a close primary and then immediately need the people they just beat. Celebrate the victory, take the lesson from the margin, and rerack for the general election.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro and Updated Michigan Thoughts00:03:10 - Progressives and the Establishment00:12:37 - Evan Scrimshaw on 2028 Democratic Primaries01:18:44 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Emily Wilson — the scholar whose Odyssey translation Christopher Nolan called his primary source — just published a scathing review in the London Review of Books, and the hosts dig into whether she's right. Then Dylan and Craig go way too early on their Best Cinematography predictions: who makes the five-nominee shortlist, who gets snubbed, and which pick causes the first real disagreement of the episode.Covered this week: The Odyssey (Hoyte van Hoytema), Digger (Emmanuel Lubezki), Dune Part Three (Linus Sandgren — not Greig Fraser, as one host embarrassingly assumed), Fatherland (Laszlo Lukazal), Werewolf (Jarin Blaschke), Hope (Hong Kyung-pyo, never nominated despite shooting Parasite and Burning), and The Black Ball (La Bola Negra). Plus: a live trailer reaction to Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, the full New York Film Festival lineup (Paper Tiger, Behemoth, The 14th), and why filming in Western Sahara might become the Odyssey's next Oscar-season headache.Films discussed: The Odyssey · Digger · Dune Part Three · Fatherland · Werewolf · Hope · Wild Horse Nine · Behemoth · Project Hail Mary · The Black BallCategories: Best Cinematography · Best PictureChapters:0:00 Intro and news1:27 New York Film Festival lineup10:35 Emily Wilson vs. Christopher Nolan25:19 Wild Horse Nine trailer reaction30:46 Best Cinematography predictions

The Slanted Attic Experience: Episode 66 "Sports Room 09" World Cup, Winning Streaks & Way Too Early NFL TakesThe Sports Room is back for its 9th installment and this one comes with a new face in the room. Tyler, Liam, and Graham welcome Jack to the attic for the first time and the sports calendar delivers everything they need for one of the most wide ranging episodes of the series. They open with Jack's introduction before diving into recent NHL news and the Stanley Cup Final. The World Cup takes center stage with crazy moments from before the semi finals, how the ball changes for each tournament, Liam's firsthand experience watching France versus Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field, ticket scalping, and what the final picture could look like heading into the quarterfinals. MLB gets its moment with the All Star Game, whether any modern pitcher can reach 300 wins, the Nationals and their pitching rotation, the new manager, the Phillies so far this season, fan voting, and a room that is unanimous in its feelings about the Mets. The salary cap debate, a potential salary floor, before the Jaylen Brown trade pivots things toward the NFL. Early season expectations start with the Jets before moving through teams poised to take a step up or a step back. Mike Tomlin's drama, the Steelers outlook, top teams in each conference, young QB development, and way too early fantasy football top five picks close things out.Guest Panel:Graham: Born in North Carolina and raised on Duke basketball in the heart of Tobacco Road, Graham became a devoted Hokie after attending Virginia Tech. While he keeps a close eye on American sports his true passion right now lives in the English Premier League where he proudly supports Brighton and Hove Albion week in and week out.Liam: Born and raised in Philadelphia, Liam is a die hard Eagles, Phillies, and WVU fan who has lived through championship highs and gut punch lows with equal passion. He fell in love with lacrosse in high school and now follows the rise of the PLL as closely as anything else on the sports calendar.Jack: Making his first appearance in the Sports Room, Jack is a die hard New York Jets and Washington Nationals fan who brings genuine sports knowledge and a fresh perspective to a room that does not have a low bar. A Jets fan's optimism and a Nationals fan's patience make for a compelling combination and he holds his own from the very first minute.Topics Covered:Intro and Jack's first appearanceRecent NHL news and the Stanley Cup FinalRecent World Cup moments before the semi finalsHow the ball changes for each World CupWorld Cup 2026 watching and thoughts before the quarterfinalsWhat could the final look like?Liam at Lincoln Financial Field watching France vs. IraqTicket scalping and the cost of attending World Cup gamesMLB and the All Star GameWill any modern pitcher reach 300 wins? The Nationals and their pitching rotationThe new Nats manager and the Phillies so far this seasonMLB All Star Game lookahead and fan votingPost All Star Break outlookThe unanimous dislike of the New York MetsMLB salary cap, potential salary floor, and a possible lockoutThe Jaylen Brown tradeNFL season expectationsStarting with the Jets and teams taking a step up or step downMike Tomlin drama and the Steelers outlookTop teams in each conferenceYoung quarterback progression in the leagueWay too early dynasty fantasy football top five picksOutroNew episodes of The Slanted Attic Experience drop bi-weekly at 10:30 AM EST with the occasional surprise episode along the way. Who is the most overdue actor in Hollywood? According to a Nate Silver model from 2012, it isn't Leonardo DiCaprio — it's Matt Damon. And he still hasn't won. Now Damon (The Odyssey) and Tom Cruise (Digger) are both heading into the 2027 Oscar race with massive 'he's finally due' narratives — and Dylan and Craig are making their way-too-early calls on who gets in and who takes home the statue. This week: full five-nominee slates for Best Actor and Best Actress at the 99th Academy Awards, predicted winners, and dark horses nobody else is talking about yet. On the Best Actor side: why the Cruise vs. Damon clash mirrors one of the great rivalries in Oscar history, whether Jeremy Strong (The Social Reckoning) runs as lead or supporting, and why Timothée Chalamet might quietly accumulate his way into the race via Dune 3. On the Best Actress side: why both hosts pick Sandra Hüller but for different movies — and why a new Academy rule could make her the first performer nominated twice in the same category since the 1930s. Plus: the Al Pacino / Scent of a Woman parallel that makes Tom Cruise the 2027 frontrunner, the Ingrid Bergman / Gaslight parallel pointing toward a Hüller win, Craig's case for Julianne Moore (The Debut), and why Elon Musk promoting the new Uwe Boll film as the antidote to The Odyssey might be the funniest thing to happen in Hollywood this year.Films discussed: Digger, The Odyssey, Fjord, The Debut, The Social Reckoning, Michael, Wild Horse Nine, Obsession, Rose, Fatherland, A Place in Hell, Gentle Monster, Project Hail Mary, I Swear, The Invite, Jack of Spades, All of a Sudden

Ruthie Polinsky and Clay Harbor circle back to the Chicago Bears' 2026 schedule with a fresh perspective, taking a closer look at the matchups that could define the season and revisiting their initial reactions nearly a week after the release. From a potentially brutal midseason stretch to intriguing quarterback battles featuring Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, and Drake Maye, the duo breaks down where the Bears may have advantages and where things could get dicey. They also debate who could actually be under center for the Vikings by Week 2 and whether the Bears can build momentum early in the year. The conversation moves game-by-game as Ruthie and Clay hand out their way-too-early win-loss predictions, including marquee showdowns against the Eagles, Packers, Patriots, Seahawks, Buccaneers, and Lions on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit. They discuss why matchups against teams like the Saints, Jets, Falcons, Jaguars, and Dolphins may be far more complicated than they appear on paper, while also previewing the Bears' first trip to the Bills' new Highmark Stadium. Along the way, the hosts examine the importance of primetime tests, tough road environments, and how Caleb Williams could stack up against some of the NFL's biggest names in year two.
