The central premise of this podcast episode revolves around a rigorous comparison between the two notable films, A Quiet Place and Bird Box, both of which explore themes of survival in worlds fraught with unseen dangers. We delve into the nuances of their narratives, character developments, and the effectiveness of their respective cinematic techniques. A Quiet Place emerges as a profound examination of a family navigating their existence amidst a hostile environment, where silence is not merely a choice but a matter of life and death. In stark contrast, Bird Box, despite its compelling premise, is scrutinized for its lack of depth and failure to engage the audience on the same emotional level. Through this discourse, we aim to illuminate the strengths and weaknesses of these films, ultimately determining which one prevails in this cinematic contest.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Send us a textWhat if the key to surviving an apocalypse lies in the quirks of our own mental disorders? Join us as we unpack the chaotic world of Bird Box with humor and curiosity! We kick things off by poking fun at the film's casting choices, including the unexpected appearance of Machine Gun Kelly, and share a few laughs over the realistic yet infuriating portrayal of characters in crisis. With Sandra Bullock at the helm, we explore whether her performance sank or swam amidst the madness of unseen monsters and bizarre plot twists, landing on a scene with mysterious drawings as a standout moment worth discussing. As we venture deeper into the concept of survival, a lively debate sparks around whether certain mental conditions might actually serve as a safeguard against the movie's menacing forces. We ponder complex questions about the nature of the entity and its psychological warfare tactics, exploring the fascinating idea that schizophrenia or bipolar disorder might offer an unexpected shield. Our conversation weaves through theories of control, manipulation, and mental resilience, dotted with cultural references and humorous banter about whether sociopaths are immune—or simply easy prey—for this apocalyptic nightmare.

When it comes to the A Quiet Place franchise we kept coming back to one big question: What are the biological factors that would allow these terrifying aliens who terrorize Earth to hunt via sound alone? The aliens, often referred to as “dark angels” in the films, have a number of distinct characteristics which will inform our questions. For starters, they're blind but incredibly sensitive to sound, which gives them an instinct to kill everything that emits the slightest noise. They are also incredibly strong and fast and they possess armored skin which protects them from most kinds of weapons, including bombs and fire. The only ways to kill them (so far) are to drop them into deep water (since they can't swim) or by emitting high-frequency sound which causes the armor on their heads to open and expose their only vulnerable part: their ears. In this episode we will dive into how this alien echolocation differs from what we see in animals native to our planet, and the environmental factors that might have contributed to how and why these creatures evolved as they did. And then there are all the story elements to consider, from the sound design (and lack thereof) of the films themselves, the question of childbirth in a world where uttering a sound can get you killed, and much more. Oh yeah, and then you might want to find out who from the film thought this movie should have been called Don't Fart. It's all fair game in Does it Fly? episode 12!SUGGESTED VIEWINGThis episode is FULL OF SPOILERS, don't say we didn't warn you! So, we'd recommend you watch both A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. Keep in mind, we recorded this episode without having seen A Quiet Place Day One (in theaters now), so there's no spoilers for that film. And if you've seen the entire franchise and still need this creepy itch scratched, when watching A Quiet Place, Hakeem also thought about the 2018 film Bird Box (you can find it on Netflix) starring Sandra Bullock, where the threat is sight instead of sound—if you see the force extinguishing humans, you die. It's kind of creepy, but definitely a good horror watch before going to bed!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Their heads are made of these plates that open to reveal the fleshy parts underneath. But their exoskeleton and the plates on their head, those things are virtually impenetrable. So, in order to kill it, what they've discovered is, is that with the right high frequency pitch... This week, we're chatting with Metro Detroit's own Josh Malerman, the NY Times Bestselling author of Bird Box, as he looks ahead to the forthcoming release of his latest work of suspenseful (and supernatural) horror, Incidents Around The House (out on June 25, via Del Rey). Malerman talks about his deep dive into the literary tradition of "haunted house" tales with this new story about Bela, an 8-year-old narrator who discovers a malevolent entity inside of her house that she refers to as "Other Mommy," a strange and possibly ghostly imaginary-frienemy who starts to creepily ask Bela a strange question: “Can I go inside your heart?” More info at: https://joshmalerman.com/ And follow Josh on Instagram for details about his upcoming book-launch at Ant Hall in Hamtramck! https://www.instagram.com/joshmalerman/

Returning for his fourth appearance on the podcast Bird Box author Josh Malerman is back! This time we talk about Josh's five-novella collection Spin a Black Yarn. To me, there is no more consistent voice in horror. An outside observer who doesn't actually read his work and judges by the mainstream -meme culture of Bird Box might not have any idea just how creative, and experimental he is. I was a huge fan of Malerman's last novella collection Goblin, which we talked about in a previous episode. Like that episode, this one is a nuts-and-bolts discussion about the narrative construction behind these stories. We also have a little non-spoiler discussion about Josh's forthcoming novel Incidents Around the House. This is a must-listen for Malermaniacs and anyone interested in writing weird or horror fiction. We mostly avoid spoilers but an hour in I give a full spoiler warning. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

BEST OF: St. Lucy is one of the earliest Christian Saints, known as a virgin and martyr to history, and a female version of Prince Siddhartha when she gave up her wealth and influences to become nun-like. Her immovable convictions have been portrayed as a divine influence which protected her against Roman persecution, from her punishment in a brothel to being burned alive. As a result of her divinely protected body, the Romans had her stabbed in the neck, severing the head symbolically, and her eyes plucked out, severing the connection between the eyes and the soul. She thus became the patron of virgins, or those who are purified, and the blind. In the new Nun II movie, the demon is hunting down Lucy's descendants and searching for her eyes, which have become a religious relic, because they have the power to turn whomever possesses them into an angelic being. This is a psychological process, too, occurring in the body with our passions and emotions. When they get too close to the head temple and gateway of the soul, our eyes, they can use the body and brain to cause havoc. Interestingly, the Nun II is the number one grossing movie. Parallel to this movie is what was the top music video in the country, but as of now sits at number three, and that is Doja Cat's ‘Paint The Town Red'. In the song she removes her eye to visit the underworld and perform an abortion as a sacrament to the Devil. She also encourages feral behaviors in general. The removal of an eye to reach the underworld is directly out of ancient Egypt, a theme Katy Perry also used in ‘Dark Horse'. It is further found in Japanese and Scandinavian mythology with Izanagi and Odin respectively. Some people choose to pluck out their own eyes to these facts, and in not looking become ignorant. However, they also try to force other people, like Birdbox, to look away from the divine and see the demonic.
