This week, our two drinkers of sacred beers discuss Yorgos Lanthimos' absurdist/horror/thriller/black comedy/family drama/fable/Greek tragedy thing steeped in rancid vibes, Barry Keoghan being a weird freak, and Colin Farrell looking despondent. Don't worry, they didn't forget to talk about the spaghetti scene, they just almost forgot to talk about it because they're idiots. This and other quality film criticism are in store for you on this episode of the Greatest Movie Ever Made! The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, and Sunny Suljic.Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio

In this episode of *Cutting Deep Into Horror*, hosts Henrique Couto and Rachael Rodolfi dive into the harrowing landscape of Yorgos Lanthimos' *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, a film that embodies the depths of trauma and moral complexity. Join us as we engage in a profound discussion on parental responsibility, guilt, and the chilling consequences of choices made in the dark corners of our minds. As we unpack the film's narrative, Henrique and Rachael examine the nuances of familial bonds challenged by the haunting specter of a boy seeking revenge for his father's death. The podcast begins with a heartfelt conversation about family gatherings, setting a stark contrast for the dark themes to follow. Henrique and Rachael explore their emotional connections to the film while highlighting key moments that illustrate the struggles between love and moral dilemmas. The episode allows listeners to traverse the unsettling journey of Stephen (Colin Farrell), a heart surgeon whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel as he's confronted with the consequences of his past actions. From the eerie presentation of family dynamics to the deeply unsettling interactions with Martin (Barry Keoghan), the hosts analyze how fear and trauma manifest in frightening yet relatable ways. Their observations are punctuated with humor, insightful commentary, and frank discussions about the nature of horror and personal responsibility. As Stephen grapples with Martin's demands for retribution, the difficult choices he faces culminate in a shocking climax that forces the audience to confront their own beliefs about justice and sacrifice. The unique storytelling style, mixing dark humor with visceral horror, is a focal point of discussion, as Henrique and Rachael reflect on the movie's impact and the moral quandaries it presents. In later segments, the conversation delves into the critical moments leading to the film's unsettling conclusion, exploring themes of existential dread and the fleeting nature of life. They touch on the symbolism of isolation and the haunting reality of familial love overshadowed by the specter of loss. With compelling insights, they guide listeners through a narrative that resonates with the intuitively unsettling nature of guilt and choice.Ultimately, the episode poses crucial questions that challenge listeners to reflect on their values and the complexities of human relationships. As the discussion draws to a close, listeners are left to ponder whether the price of revenge is ever worth the cost of losing one's humanity.**Join the Conversation**If you're interested in sharing your thoughts on this chilling episode or the themes explored in *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, we want to hear from you! In this episode of Cutting Deep Into Horror, we dive into the intricacies and terrors of the 2014 film "Last Shift," directed by Anthony de Blasi. Co-hosts Henrique and Rachael unpack the story of Officer Loren, a rookie cop assigned to her first shift at an abandoned police station as it prepares to close its doors for good. The discussion explores various horror tropes while delving into profound themes of family legacy, trauma, and the impact of the past on the present. We begin with introductions, setting the eerie tone and encouraging listeners to remain alert as we dissect the film's chilling narrative. Henrique recounts his experience watching the film for the first time, discussing its gradual build-up of tension and the heart-pounding scares that punctuate the silence. Rachael thoughtfully emphasizes the importance of acting and atmosphere in horror, sharing how Loren's relatable character helps ground us in the unfolding supernatural events. As the plot progresses, we examine key interactions between Loren and her commanding officer, Sergeant Cohen, who introduces a mix of gruffness and dark humor amidst the unsettling environment. The two discuss how the film establishes its eerie rules early on, highlighting how the unknown looms larger when untrusted elements fill the frame. The exploration of visual storytelling techniques reveals how these choices amplify the film's sense of dread. The hosts unpack pivotal moments in the film, including the discovery of supernatural phenomena and the haunting implications of the station's dark history tied to the Payman family—infamous for their murderous past. The discussions touch on the larger themes of legacy and expectation, particularly how Lauren grapples with her father's shadow as a former law enforcement officer. We analyze how the film unravels these elements, showcasing the psychological and emotional pressures on Lauren as she navigates a night filled with supernatural horrors.Henrique and Rachael highlight the film's minimalist approach, noting how budget constraints did not hinder its ability to instill fear. They examine the stark imagery of blood and ghostly apparitions, influenced by traditional horror filmmaking where restraint often results in a more profound impact. Each scare is dissected, showcasing the effectiveness of sound and silence in creating an immersive viewing experience. As our hosts reach the film's climax, they discuss Lauren's realization that the horrors she faces are intertwined with her family history, leading to a tragic and haunting conclusion. The conversation eventually turns to the implications of her journey and the film's commentary on facing one's fears—both seen and unseen. The episode wraps up with reflections on “Last Shift” as a masterclass in suspense and an exploration of how trauma shapes our lives.Listeners are advised to tune in for future episodes, with a promise of more chilling discussions during the spooky season. Auteur of the moment, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos shuns his recent foray into Hollywood royalty (The Favorite/Poor Things) with a return to the punishing uncomfortable art-house of The Killing of the Sacred Deer. For nearly three uncompromising hours, across three deliberately bleak and obtuse stories. It feels like either an attack or a challenge on the viewer but Jessie Plemons is a career best twice.

This week, the new(ish) stuff is The Fall Guy, Challengers, Millers Girl, and Unfrosted. Of course we have so much more, including Baby Driver, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and a little bit of social commentary around Brittney Griner and the WNBA! We kick it off with The Fall Guy, which Lauren watched this week. Kevin is very excited to hear about since he won't get to it in theaters. Lauren enjoyed it but wasn't blown away. Kevin however, is still chomping at the bit. Next up, Kevin takes us back to 2017 with Baby Driver, a film he has tried to catch for years and has somehow always missed! Now that it's on Netflix, he finally jumped in and watched and he thoroughly enjoyed it! We flip it back over to Lauren to discuss another new theatrical release, Challengers. It's a twisted sports/love story that may not be quite as steamy as the trailers would lead you to believe. Lauren wasn't as enamored with it as everyone else seems to be, but her description of Zendaya's character keeps Kevin interested in seeing it when it's available to stream. Sticking with steamy-adjacent dramas, Kevin talks about the early 2024 film, Millers Girl. It bombed at the box office and hasn't been well reviewed in general, but Kevin found much of the story's moral ambiguity quite interesting and he definitely liked it more than the critics. Lauren keeps it psychological by talking about The Killing of a Sacred Deer. It stars Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, and Nicole Kidman. It's a bit of a throwback now (2017, like Baby Driver) but it works well and definitely shows Barry Keoghan's ability. In an effort to lighten the mood, Kevin quickly reviews Unfrosted, on Netflix. It is the satirical telling of the origin of the Pop Tart and it's... underwhelming. In a lot of ways it's over the top, if not downright stupid. you'd think a legen like Jerry Seinfeld would be able to reign this one in just a little bit... Before closing out the show, Lauren discusses the Robin Roberts interview of Brittney Griner interview. It's a detailed look into her harrowing ordeal. It also leads to a brief discussion on the inequality in women's sports in comparison to men's. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! This week, the great Andrew Jagielski joins us for the second and (sadly) final collaboration between Colin Farrell and Yorgos Lanthimos. That's right, it's 2017's postmodern Greek tragedy The Killing of a Sacred Deer, in which Colin plays a hypocritical surgeon whose family is placed under a curse by a teenage boy he once wronged. We delve into how this film works as an expression of Lanthimos' style and as a star vehicle for Colin, and sort through our feelings on the uglier side of Lanthimos' obtuse worldview on the edge of a populist reinvention. Along the way we touch on the birth of movie star Barry Keoghan, A24's off kilter 2017 and the development of their house brand, and Colin and Nicole Kidman's big Cannes film festival and the tumultuous events that occurred on the Croisette (with a little tease for next week). Plus, somehow, we get into a knock down drag out fight about Taylor Swift, the most Lanthimosian of pop stars. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's a brand-new movie talk episode and this one is a doosy. Kevin's pick this week is Into the Wild from director Sean Penn. It's a pretty uplifting and inspiring film starring Emile Hirsch, Kristen Stewart, Catherine Keener and more. Drew's choice on the other hand, is the more dark, unsettling and ominous film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. From director Yorgos Lanthimos, this movie stars Colin Ferrell, Barry Keoghan and Nicole Kidman. So, they're pretty opposite films in a cool and interesting way. Also, Drew will be taking a hiatus from the show but he assures us that he will be back before too long. But we pick our next movies at the end of this episode anyway for when he returns.
