MJ and Jackie have another chat about the great Goop audiobook, and Kim Jong EW becomes a true tyrant as he has banned hot dogs from North Korea. Jackie was forced to go to a Primus show and had to deal with a bunch of Gen X edgelords, and a recent Phish concert in NYC made MJ realize Phish phans have hit middle age and sent them on a downward spiral. Wednesday season 2 dropped with a collab for an UNHAPPY Meal from Wendy,  and no one wants to wait in line at a Wendy's like that, man!  Walton Goggins did a sexeh ad for Doritos Golden Sriracha flavor, but Nicholas Hoult won't get any as he keeps getting told he's "too inbred looking." This week, we're chatting to global bestseller John Niven. His breakthrough novel was the hit 'Kill Your Friends', a brutal takedown of his career in the 90's music industry. He went on to write the screenplay for the movie version too, starring Nicholas Hoult. John has published 10 novels, including 'The Second Coming', 'Straight White Male', and 'Kill 'Em All'. Also, he's written screenplays for more hit movies, co-writing 'How to Build a Girl', with Caitlin Moran. His new novel is 'The Fathers', which tells the story of Dan and Jada, who meet in a busy maternity ward. One is a TV writer and first-time father, the one is a small-tme criminal having his 6th... ot 7th kid. When a tragedy throws them together, Jada sees the chance for one last get-rich-quick scheme. We talk about picking projects, switching to screenplays, and why he's always got a novel on the go. You can hear how much he knows before he starts writing, and when the plot starts to become clear on the writing road trip. Also, we run through how he knows when he's ready to start writing again. You can get a copy of the book at uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the showpatreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025:  James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. So which movie was dumber and more suitable for booger eating six year olds? Find out!Watch to the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/cZCszsepEVM

This episode contains spoilers for Superman. The film writer Jessica Ritchey returns for a look at James Gunn's hard reset of the DC cinematic universe starting with his new  Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Last Son of Krypton, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. After a decade of Henry Cavill's Übermensch Superman, Gunn has returned to the original idea of the Man of Steel as a kind and decent protector of the planet. incorporating elements of the character from the last 90 years of comic books, radio, tv, cartoons and cinema, while also plugging the idea of Superman into modern life, where real life supervillains like Trump and Elon Musk seem to have the upper hand. Gunn's Superman contends with techbros and oligarchs who use other metahumans to inspire fear and social media to corrode the public discourse while running private prisons and engineering global conflicts for profit.Jessica and I discuss what we appreciate about Superman as a light and goofy movie that holds up kindness as a virtue and goodness as a choice one can make, including the gentle rebuke of Man of Steel in the main plot twist, and how it has enraged the Snyder Bros and conservatives who confidently predicted this movie would fail, but we also eat our words about how sure we were this movie was not going to meet the moment.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Sharing the screen with the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Zlatko Burić, Martin's role is small but powerful—appearing in several key scenes that fans won't forget. But Martin's journey to the big screen is as compelling as any superhero origin story. Before acting, he was a sports journalist in Poland, and it was none other than Kobe Bryant who encouraged him to follow his heart and pursue a career in the arts. With all the enthusiasm and boundless energy of a certain super-canine, we jump all over the new Superman movie that director James Gunn controversially decided to call ... Superman. We try not to give away too much in these descriptions, but it's kind of hard to avoid the fact that our hosts do a lot of gushing in this particular episode. In that way, they took in this film the same way a lot of people did: with appreciation for quite possibly the most human Superman ever seen on the big screen. Then there's the brilliant Nicholas Hoult's turn as Lex Luthor, deep-cut heroes like bowl-cutted Green Lantern Guy Gardner and the even-keeled Mr. Terrific, so many Easter eggs and cameos, and (of course) Krypto the Superdog. Basically, it's an episode-long reminder that breaking down a film critically is equally possible with one you love as it is for one you revile.Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.

Look! Up in the sky... it's Sidebar Forever! On this episode, we react to the latest Superman film — written and directed by James Gunn, and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. We dive into our expectations going in, what worked (and what didn't), the clear influence of All-Star Superman on the film, and how well supporting characters like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Krypto were portrayed. We also break down how this new Man of Steel stacks up to past cinematic versions. Plus: Does Gunn's take on Superman kick off the new DC Extended Universe with a bang… or a shrug?

“I'm not messing around. I'm doing important stuff.” We watched “Superman” (2025) with our friend and resident Supes expert, Billy Roach, and we welcome our newest Kryptonian overlord. In a growing list of Supermen, David Corenswet has proven himself to be quite possibly the dorkiest entry, and gosh darn it, it's so endearing! We're not going to waste too much time answering the trolls' review bombing this movie - instead, we're going to celebrate what we liked about it. Not the least of which is the chemistry between the leads - Corenswet's Superman and, yes, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. Okay, Rachel Brosnahan is doing some fine work as well, but we're really digging Nicky and Corny's performances as these iconic characters. It's gotta be tough to bring anything new to Superman and Lex Luthor after so many iterations, but these two brought it - and let's be honest, they're not too tough to look at either. Nicky's baby blues are worth the price of admission! We don't forget about this press tour, in which our two boys are publicizing their aforementioned chemistry and landing the crucial disposable income of the gay male moviegoing audience.  Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

The Strange Harbors Podcast

James Gunn stewards a new DC Cinematic Universe with the hotly anticipated Superman. Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi, this new version of the Big Blue Boy Scout attempts to turn over a new leaf for a floundering franchise by taking pages from a rich tapestry of comics. Is it successful? We review the film, rank the silver screen Supermen, and talk about the future of DC at the movies.

James Gunn's Superman is finally here—and the Pop Culture Pastor crew is all in. This week, Dave, Cody, and Justin dig deep into the film that reboots the most iconic superhero of all time with big ideas, even bigger emotions, and (surprisingly) one very good dog. We break down the performances (Nicholas Hoult's Lex is definitive), debate the new take on Kal-El's parents, and celebrate the bright, hopeful tone that makes this Superman feel like… well, Superman. David Corenswet's debut in the cape gives us everything we've been missing—sincerity, optimism, and a jawline sculpted by truth, justice, and the American way.We also give our winners and losers of the movie, recast one key role, and tackle the biggest online criticisms: is he too soft? Too political? Too “for kids”? We've got thoughts. And feelings. And fist pumps. So many fist pumps.
