Is it a horror movie or an action movie? It doesn't matter, Nic Cage turns in one of the best performances of his career. Synopsis Renfield tells the story of Count Dracula's titular servant struggling to become self actualized in modern times after discovering his codependency in a 12-step self help group. Dracula, who has been convalescing for an indeterminate amount of time is finally gaining enough power to continue his plans for world domination, and Renfield's self empowerment is really throwing a wrench into his plans. To make matters worse, a local wolf themed gang is trying to kill Renfield, and he must combat them using his bug diet fueled superpowers. Review of Renfield The headline on this one, is that Dracula is the role that Nic Cage was born to play, and he appropriately chews up the scenery whenever he is on screen. This movie is a lot of fun thematically and visually. Renfield and Dracula's relationship interpreted through modern codependency and narcissism pop-psychology is just a great funny premise. Nicholas Hoult plays Renfield by channeling by channeling his former About a Boy costar Hugh Grant and is a great straight man to Dracula's antics. The filmmakers don't go with a straight ahead comedy, but surprisingly fold in the superhero action genre as well. It ends up being a hard-R action comedy ala Deadpool. I can't say it completely works for me, since the action and superpowered violence feels like an arbitrary add-on, but that's not to say it's not good. Some of the funnest parts are the absurdly violent fight sequences that produce more gore than most horror movies. Looking at the writers and directors, the motley film starts to make more sense. The story is by Robert Kirkman, who's famous for his comic and TV successes with The Walking Dead and Invincible. It's written by Ryan Ridley, a writer for Rick and Morty, and directed by Chris McKay, who directed the Lego Batman Movie. All of whom are great at mixing genres to great effect. Score 9/10
An evening of fine dining at Chef Slowik's prestigious island restaurant turns into a nightmare for a young couple. The Menu is one of the best horror movies of last year and was such a pleasure to watch from start to finish. It's both dark and hilarious at the same time and the performances from Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, among several others are incredible. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11358390 Directed: Chris McKay Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage,Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, some bloodsucker fuckers In this modern monster tale of Dracula's loyal servant, Renfield, the tortured aide to history's most narcissistic boss is forced to procure his master's prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there's a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. The Third Part in our On the Road with Ladies of Vengeance trilogy. You can't go wrong with Charlize Theron driving your movie. Unfortunately the prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD does not take the above advice and while we wouldn't dare to advise the great George Miller on his filmmaking sequel choices (BABE: PIG IN THE CITY good and HAPPY FEET TWO not so much) we do hope that Nicholas Hoult can convey his great performance as a likable bald villain into playing Lex Luthor. And there's your one reference to comic book movies that ALL pale in comparison to an action movie that will referenced and spoke of with great reverence decades from now. And now I will retire from writing these show notes to go watch SWEET NOVEMBER or THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Because I remember Charlize. And not much else. Good day! Tonight, we have a new episode to bring to you. We recently watched the new Nicholas Cage movie, Renfield where our favorite eccentric actor plays our favorite evil vampire, Dracula. But, the focus of the film, as the title implies, is on Nicholas Hoult's Renfield, Dracula's tortured servant and familiar. This horror-comedy is now available to stream on Peacock...and that's just what we did. But, What did we think? Tune in and find out!
The undead enjoy nothing more than eating brains so if there had been an outbreak in the man cave this week they'd be going hungry as we sit down to talk about the Top 5 Zombies. Cris isn't a fan, Reegs doesn't let his enthusiasm prevent him from flailing around on one of his favourite subjects and Sidey and Dan were also there. George A. Romero practically invented the modern concept of the cinematic zombie in 1968's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and whether they've been used as a commentary on greed and consumerism, a post 9-11 allegory for terrorism or a grim vision of our future after the next pandemic, their huge cultural appeal is evidence of some deeper primal fear. An intimidating subject to talk about then, and what better way for the Dads to celebrate cinemas most famous shufflers than with a sincere and sometimes funny but very lukewarm romantic comedy like 2013's WARM BODIES. Some stuff happens, Nicholas Hoult channels ZOOLANDER and Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich is in it for a bit and it's all played as surprisingly sweet considering the plot demands our hero eat the grey matter of romantic co-lead Julie (Teresa Palmer)'s boyfriend to absorb his memories, not to mention the massive existential weirdness that might imply which the movie certainly doesn't. Call me a massive softy but I did like the way a simple hand gesture had such deep meaning and an excellent soundtrack made this slightly better than completely awful. We've already discussed our preference for a slow zombie but had we considered ones that can rap and sing? Disney Channel movie Z-O-M-B-I-E-S came highly recommended by my youngest and it solves the problem of the undead's hunger by introducing an inhibiting wrist band which stifles the urge to eat and also makes all the zombies look like pastel-shaded Joker cosplayers. Fantastically talented dancers and catchy tunes made this rightfully a sensation in our house especially if you didn't stop for a minute to think about some of the unfortunate racial subtext that the heavy-handed segregation theme might imply. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Join us this week as we chow down on some bugs, spray y'all with blood, and attend some lovely self-help groups, all while discussing the new action-horror-comedy ‘Renfield'. Renfield is a 2023 American comedy horror film directed and produced by Chris McKay, and written by Ryan Ridley from a story by Robert Kirkman, who also served as producer. Inspired by characters from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, the film stars Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones, Adrian Martinez, and Nicolas Cage.
Recorded during the midst of Dracula Daily, shortly after completing their own movie for the 48 hour film challenge, Carter and Ashley discuss the newly released Renfield (2023). In a modern take on two classic characters, Renfield is Dracula's familiar, and has come to realize their relationship is toxic. Despite performances by Nic Cage and Nicholas Hoult, the film struggled in the box office. Listen to hear if we disagree, or if it deserved to fail.Check us out at horrorsucks.comThanks for listening!
The PhilenApocalypse as foretold by prophecy is finally upon us! Philena Franklin has taken over OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS and has transformed it in NEW MOVIES FOR OLD STONERS! Both movies are in color and both have synchronized sound! No silents! No subtitles! One of these movies is even from THIS CENTURY!!! Can OMFYS survive this brush with modernity??? Listen and find out! First, Philena shows us what it was like to grow up in the Franklin household with MIDNIGHT MADNESS (1980), a movie she claims her dad, OMFYS co-host Greg Franklin, made her watch repeatedly during her formative years. David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), Eddie Deezen (GREASE), Maggie Roswell (THE SIMPSONS), and Stephen Furst (ANIMAL HOUSE) star in this wacky scavenger hunt comedy produced by Disney (although you wouldn't know it from the opening credits). The Mouse kept their name off of this one. It's also Michael J. Fox's first film, which probably helped the studio recoup their losses from it on the home video market once Family Ties hit. Then, Philena takes us to 2013--just 10 years ago!--for WARM BODIES, a zombified retelling of Romeo and Juliet with Nicholas Hoult from RENFIELD as a rotting zombie searching who finds true love, and John Malkovich in the Lord Capulet role. I'd wanna say it's the first movie featured on OMFYS with CGI effects, but there might've been some video toaster action going on in LOST HIGHWAY (1997) from our "In Cold Bud" episode. We also talk about the WGA strike and what musical artists are torturing the poor, starving writers on the picket line. Hope you enjoy all the newness but we promise to get back to black and white with our next episode where we will be joined by longtime TCM Underground programmer Millie De Chirico for Curtis Harrington's NIGHT TIDE (1961) with Dennis Hopper + Kenneth Anger's (RIP) occult short, INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969). We take at look at the latest incarnation of Dracula from Universal - a comedy horror starring Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Nicholas Cage as the Count
...And we're back! 2 Guys 5 Movies presents the latest episode of the Quick Cage, where Frank watches Nic Cage movies so you don't have to. This week's episode focuses Cage's most recent movie, Renfield, where he plays Count Dracula. The movie also stars Nicholas Hoult as the title character, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz.
Hello, there! Would you like to sign our petition to get the dance sequence reinstated in Nicholas Hoult's Renfield (2023)? It's tragic the way that deleted scene was left on the cutting room floor, but with your help, we can not only get it back in the movie but also get the whole movie remade as a musical! Here at Spooky Tuesday, we think Nic Cage's take on a modern-day Dracula had a lot of potential, but we also have some notes. While we loved the gore and the fact that someone snorted a centipede, let's just say the central love story was no Romeo & Juliet. On our latest episode, we're sharing our vision and calling out all the CLEAR references to the vampire lore that came before.References:Deleted Dance Number: https://youtu.be/KE_GQM3TXbshttps://screenrant.com/renfield-dracula-universal-monsters-easter-eggs-references/
In this episode, we discuss the grossly underrated ‘Renfield' directed by Chris McKay and starring Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, and Awkwafina. Renfield is about, Dracula's henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades, longing for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them. The post 30 Screams or Less 020: Renfield appeared first on Shining Wizards Network.
