This week, Flick is joined by film buffs Maudie Osborne and Anthony Carew to review the latest from Jeff Nichols, who is also known for Take Shelter (2011) and Mud (2012).The Bike Riders details the decade-long story of the Midwestern bike club, the Vandals. As an outsider, Kathy observes their transformation from a haven for misfits into a notorious crime gang. The Bike Riders (2024) The team also goes on to review Yorgos Lanthimos' new, witty triptych tale, Kinds of Kindness. Cosa stai aspettando!Clicca play!
Dogtooth is a 2009 Greek absurdist psychological drama film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Written by Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou, the film is about a husband and wife (Christos Stergioglou and Michelle Valley) who keep their children (Angeliki Papoulia, Christos Passalis, and Mary Tsoni) ignorant of the world outside their property well into adulthood.
This episode we look at the early filmography of Yorgos Lanthimos featuring DOGTOOTH! Famous for his more Western entries in his filmography, THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER, THE FAVOURITE and his recent Oscar winner POOR THINGS, we go back to the seminal turning point in his career: DOGTOOTH. He's been a prominent figure in Greek Cinema prior (part of the aptly put "Weird Wave") but it's fair to say that DOGTOOTH put him on the International map, nominated for a Best Foreign Feature Oscar in 2009. Doing so made this deeply darkly comic film (or horror, depending on your interpretation) available to a much wider audience at the time. And what a treat that is! It's funny how films like this have the habit of taking us all to the place we tend to stray to; the darkest places our humor can go honestly. Certainly Josh (not to throw him under the bus). Be warned, there is a lot of sarcastic chatter about inter-familial relations for which we do not seriously condone. But as we say, if you're not laughing, you're crying. Sit in your "sea", turn down the "pussy" and smell your "zombies", here we go!
We discuss the 4-Oscar-winning film Poor Things as well as the other creations of writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos, including most notably The Lobster, Dogtooth, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. These films mix high concepts, purposively stilted line-readings, and increasingly rich cinematography with horror and gross sex. For more, visit prettymuchpop.com. Brad and Jake dive into the cinematic highlights of 2018. They kick off with "mid90s," Jonah Hill's directorial debut that vividly brings to life the raw skateboarding scene of 1990s Los Angeles through the eyes of a troubled boy. The journey continues with "Hereditary," Ari Aster's haunting horror film that masterfully intertwines family drama with spine-tingling terror. Brad and Jake dissect these distinct films, wondering what will become of Hill's directing career, and whether Aster's film might be better watched through a more realistic lens than a supernatural one. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Murder by Death (1976), Dogtooth (2009), Inherent Vice (2014), Tangerine (2015), Manchester by the Sea (2016), First Reformed (2017), The Florida Project (2017), Annihilation (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), Ben is Back (2018), Blindspotting (2018), Burning (2018), Can You Ever Forgive Me? Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos first emerged as part the so-called ‘weird wave' of Greek cinema, and is known for unsettling themes and absurdist humour of his films. He made his mark internationally in 2009 with Dogtooth, which won a Cannes film festival prize and was nominated for an Oscar. Shifting into English language cinema with The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell and Olivia Colman, he continued to win awards and acclaim with The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and his historical comedy drama The Favourite. His most recent film Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, has been nominated for eleven Academy awards, including best film and best director.Yorgos Lanthimos tells John Wilson about his upbringing in Athens, the son of a professional basketball player who was part of the Greek national team, and how, after graduating from film school, he began making commercials and pop videos. He reveals why the work of the American photographer Diane Arbus, renowned for the underlying psychological tension of her portraits, was a major inspiration on the mood of his films. He also cites the influences of the German choreographer Pina Bausch on visual elements in his films, including dance routines seen in The Favourite and Poor Things. The plays of the British writer Sarah Kane, including Blasted and Crave, were also influential on the tone of his darkly humorous films. Producer: Edwina PitmanDiane Arbus' quote is from the documentary film Going Where I've Never Been: The Photography of Diane Arbus (1972), voiced by Mariclare Costello.

Our lead-up to The Best Films of 2023 episode continues as we cover Yorgos' Lanthimos' ribald, fisheye fantasy: Poor Things. Is it the Greek filmmaker's most accessible film? We talk Emma Stone, fearless performances, and the sweetly demented world constructed for this raunchy coming-of-age fable.
Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Dogtooth etc) returns with the hugely anticipated Poor Things, adapted from Alasdair Gray's brilliant riff on Frankenstein. Are we angry he didn't set it in Glasgow? Did its sexual politics shock us? Do we rate Willem Dafoe's Scottish accent? Listen to find out. Also on the show, we review Andrew Haigh's devastating All of Us Strangers, and given that Lanthimos and Haigh have made bold adaptations that differ significantly from the books, we pick our favourite adaptations that bring something new to their source material. Editor - Yorgos Mavropsaridis POOR THINGS editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis was already an established editor when he first started collaborating with a young director named Yorgos Lanthimos. At that point Lanthimos was only known for doing commercials, but by their third feature together, 2009's DOGTOOTH, the pair began to be recognized as a formidable storytelling team. Over a decade later, they would finally take on what Yorgos Mavropsaridis considers their first true studio film, Searchlight Pictures' POOR THINGS. POOR THINGS tells the story of a young woman, Bella Baxter, who was brought back to life by her guardian, the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Initially naïve, Bella was eager to learn about the world around her, albeit under Baxter's protection. Wanting to see more, she ran off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, and traveled across continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella demanded equality and liberation. Yorgos Mavropsaridis Yorgos Mavropsaridis is most known for his work with POOR THINGS director, Yorgos Lanthimos, including Dogtooth (2009), The Lobster (2015) and The Favourite (2018), for which Yorgos received an Oscar nomination and an ACE Eddie award. Some might call Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar ascent an unlikely one, given the oddness at the core of his films. But with the Foreign Language Feature nomination for the explicit Dogtooth and the Original Screenplay for The Lobster, the Greek auteur cemented his status in the Oscar club. A victory lap of sorts came with The … Continue reading "254 – The Killing of a Sacred Deer"
