Joon Ho Bong is probably the most well known Korean director outside his home country of South Korea. His filmography includes some pretty well known movies including MEMORIES OF MURDER (2003), THE HOST (2006), SNOWPIERCER (2013), and PARASITE (2019). His latest film, also English language such as SNOWPIERCER was, is MICKEY 17 (2025).From IMDB: “During a human expedition to colonize space, Mickey 17, a so-called “expendable” employee, is sent to explore an ice planet.”The film was directed and written by Bong based off the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The cast includes Robert Pattinson in another stellar performance and includes Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun. Receiving fairly good reviews by all, your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts.
Emily Donovan of Clean Cape Fear returns to the Environmental Transformation Podcast to discuss the EPA's proposed rollback of the PFAS drinking water rules and how it potentially could impact contaminated communities like hers in North Carolina. Host Sean Grady explores the legal, regulatory, and public health stakes behind the EPA's May 14 announcement, with Donovan providing on-the-ground insight into the movement to hold polluters accountable, protect public drinking water, and stop PFAS exposure. Our hosts, Josh and Jade, review the Bong Joon Ho film, Mickey 17. The movie is based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton and stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey, alongside Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Set in the year 2054, the plot follows a man who joins a space colony as an "Expendable", a disposable worker who is cloned every time he dies.Pattinson acting is outstand and he even choses a crazy voice for the character. Additionally, Ho explores themes of colonialism, capitalism, worker exploitation, and more in the film. Click play to discover if Mickey 17 is trash or treasure.

Devil's urine. That's what Dupont employees called PFAS. These toxic, human made forever chemicals are now in the blood of almost every human on the planet. They are found in drinking water around the world, even Antarctica. And they are used in a broad range of consumer products, like non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, waterproof items, dental floss, and even medical masks. These are only a few examples of many. This group of toxic chemicals, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), permanently concentrates in your body and the environment. You can't get rid of them. In fact, they bioaccumulate, meaning they get worse and worse. The public awareness from uncovering of the truth behind Dupont's misdeeds now contaminating much of the planet is tantamount to this generation's Silent Spring. Our guest Rob Bilott is very much a Rachel Carson sort of figure who has stood up to the chemical industry as the lead attorney to bring light to the dangers of PFAS and its many variations. He fought and won a 20+ year battle against Dupont for the poisoning of over 70,000 people in West Virginia and Ohio. His work was even captured in the 2019 feature film, Dark Waters where he was portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. Rob has continued his groundbreaking work and is looking at the potential of a nationwide class action lawsuit as newer versions of PFAS emerge, unregulated and as dangerous as ever. In this interview from Summer 2022, we explore the history of PFAS, what exposure means, where it can be found, and what we can do. Rob Bilott is a partner in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky offices of the law firm, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP [https://www.taftlaw.com/people/robert-a-bilott], where he has practiced in the Environmental and Litigation Groups for over 31 years. During that time, Rob has handled and led some of the most novel and complex cases in the country involving damage from exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”), including the first individual, class action, mass tort, and multi-district litigation proceedings concerning the toxic chemical, recovering over $1 billion for impacted clients. In 2017, Rob received the Right Livelihood Award, known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize,” for his decades of work on behalf of those injured by PFAS chemical contamination. Rob is the author of the book, “Exposure: Poisoned Water, Corporate Greed, and One Lawyer's Twenty-Year Battle Against DuPont,” [https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Exposure/Robert-Bilott/9781501172823] and his story is the inspiration for the 2019 motion picture, “Dark Waters,” starring Mark Ruffalo. Rob's story and work is also featured in the documentary, “The Devil We Know.” Jessica Aldridge, Co-Host and Producer of EcoJustice Radio, is an environmental educator, community organizer, and 15-year waste industry leader. We are back with another Tripledose movie club recap! This week we are watching the 2010 psychological thriller titled: Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Follow us on IG and Twitter @Tripledosepod let us know what you think of the movie and the recap!
Hey Sports Fans! Welcome to KEEP IT WEIRD, the podcast for all things strange & unusual, ancient & archival, regal & rickety and everything in between! TW: big bugs, mental illness, euthanasia, cancer, curses Every week we get together to chat about something WEIRD and this week is very special because we're celebrating the birthday of one of the world's finest weirdos - - your host LAUREN! We had a wild start to the episode where we were both ATTACKED by bugs (the bugs were in our room) but once we recovered from the drama we were able to dive into this week's topics. Ashley starts us off with an ANCIENT ARTIFACTS (with Addie Rife!) where she teaches us all about the Iron Pillar of Dehli-- an ancient monument that is somewhere between 1600 and 2300 years old, made of solid iron, that still has not rusted TO THIS DAY! And speaking of ancient artifacts and metal! Last month, scientists at CERN accidentally discovered the secret to the Philosopher's Stone. YOU HEARD ME! Lauren takes over for a JEEPERS CREEPERS where we dive into a very rare (and very scary) mental health disorder known as CLINICAL LYCANTHROPY aka real life werewolves. And were...frogs??? To wrap the show the girls pass some MIND BLOWING FACTS back and forth like the time that Mark Ruffalo had a psychic vision, how monkey's find medicinal marvels, the true inspiration for Bluey and more. Send us a textRemember Collateral from Michael Mann starring Jamie Foxx and arguably the biggest movie star worldwide, Tom Cruise? We didn't remember a lot from this movie either. What we did remember was that it was more realistic than your average action film of the time, and Jada Pinkett Smith seemed normal. But with these two mega stars, this director, and a supporting cast that is downright diabolical, we have high hopes.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Bill is back next week from his research and writing sabbatical. While he's gone, we decided it's important to revisit the horrors we laid out in our Project 2025 podcast series, Trump's Project 2025: Up Close and Personal – and have the series author, pro-democracy advocate and the author of nine books, David Pepper, tie them to what's actually happened so far. In Chapter 11, set in November in Tallahassee, fictional Florida, Governor Buck Bryce confidently addresses the press regarding Hurricane Timothy, initially predicted to be a manageable Category 1 storm. However, the hurricane unexpectedly strengthens to a devastating Category 4 upon landfall, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life. The governor, previously assured by Washington that all preparations were sufficient, is confronted with the reality of inadequate storm forecasting due to recent cuts to federal meteorological services as proposed by Project 2025 and now DOGE following through. As emergency response efforts falter, Bryce grapples with the new federal policies under Trump that make it difficult to declare emergencies and provide immediate assistance to affected businesses and citizens.(As is now actually happening: Under President Donald Trump, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied federal assistance for tornadoes in Arkansas, flooding in West Virginia and a windstorm in Washington state. It also has refused North Carolina's request for extended relief funding in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This fictional but predictive narrative highlights the consequences of disregarding climate science and federal data, resulting in death and destructionAs always, the series author, David Pepper updates on how what he predicted has come to pass. We'd like to thank all the artists who volunteered their time to make this episode:Mark Ruffalo who read the chapter and others who contributed character voices. “Whedon at the line….oh, no, another brick!” - Steve, on the screenplay clunkers On this week's episode, the 2025 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza kicks off with a trip to Franchise Town as we discuss the fun, Spader-tastic sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron! How great is James Spader with this Ultron performance? Are there too many characters in this fully-loaded movie? Should they have written mutant characters when they couldn't use the word ‘mutant' anywhere in the script? And would Ultron have been more menacing if he was given a big, mechanical mustache? PLUS: What in the world is going on with the Maximoffs' accents here? Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Linda Cardellini, Stellan Skarsgård, Claudia Kim, Thomas Kretschman, Andy Serkis, and James Spader as Ultron; directed by noted jerk, Joss Whedon. Support the show
While Bill is on a research and writing sabbatical for the next 4 weeks we decided it's important to revisit the horrors we laid out in our Project 2025 podcast series, Trump's Project 2025: Up Close and Personal – and tie them to what's actually happened so far. The story that leads off Chapter 6 captures the struggles of 12-year-old Alvaro and his mother in a fictional detention center in West Texas. Alvaro expresses his hunger to his mother, who is too weak to properly care for herself. As they navigate the deteriorating conditions of the camp—overcrowded with diminishing food supplies, hostile guards, and a sense of fear from both authorities and fellow detainees—Alvaro reflects on lost friendships and longing for better times. His mother's health declines as she sacrifices for him, giving him her piece of bread despite needing it more herself. This highlights Alvaro's growing awareness of their desperate situation. He learns from a friend, Manuel, about possible escape routes and decides to plan his own escape to ensure both his and his mother's safety. In the second half of Chapter 6, in a parallel narrative, soldier Jake Caldwell describes the chaos of the detention center from his perspective. As he witnesses the overwhelming influx of women and children, he feels the systemic failures of the camp. The environment strips away humanity, leading children to escape in search of freedom. As both narratives unfold, Alvaro attempts to escape the camp, filled with hope for a future where he can see his mother smile again even as Jake grapples with the moral dilemmas of his role in the oppressive system. Their stories intertwine themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the harsh realities faced by both detainees and guards in the unjust conditions of the camp. We'd like to thank all the artists who volunteered their time to make this episode:Mark Ruffalo and Andrea Guidry who read the chapters and others who contributed character voices. Climactic is an early-stage venture fund investing in the energy, AI, automation, and robotics sectors to address climate change and its effects. It is backed by folks like Chris Sacca, Reid Hoffman, Mio Partners, and StepStone.Prior to Climactic, Josh co-founded Freestyle Capital, where he sourced or invested in the unicorns: Airtable, Patreon, Betterup, and Intercom. He was a pioneer in the early days of the Internet where he co-founded Spinner, the first Internet music startup, acquired by AOL for $320M, and Crackle, a viral video startup, acquired by Sony for $65M. Josh's commitment to the environment is long-standing; he started a nonprofit app in 2014 to connect influencers (NBA, Guns N Roses, Mark Ruffalo, Al Gore, Evan Williams) to the most important climate actions from the leading nonprofits. --Here are six topics we covered in the podcast:Origins with Rock Stars and PresidentsJosh Felser co-founded ClimateX, connecting users to 100+ environmental nonprofits with partners like Al Gore, Guns N' Roses, and the NBA.Why He Left Traditional VCAfter success at Freestyle Capital, COVID and a five-month role in California's government led Josh to shift from consumer tech to climate venture, realizing business's role in systemic change.Climactic's EvolutionJosh and Raj Kapoor launched Climactic as a B2B climate tech fund, later narrowing their focus to AI and automation for enterprise sustainability and profitability. Two Portfolio BetsClimactic invested in Grit (robotics for faster, cheaper solar installs) and Copper (battery-integrated induction stoves for apartment electrification).Climate Messaging in the MAGA EraJosh advocates re-framing climate language—e.g., using “conservation” over “environmentalism”—to resonate with conservative audiences without losing authenticity.Personal WellnessJosh finds balance through humor, avoiding the 5 AM club, emotional resilience, and grounding reminders like a Buddha statue at his Stinson Beach home.--

In this episode of Nerd Legion, hosts Monte and DoA take a break from their 1980s fantasy marathon to discuss 'Mickey 17,' director Bong Joon Ho's latest science fiction film. They first delve into the movie's box office struggles and introduce Bong Joon-ho's history, noting his thematic blend of class conflict, environmentalism, and existentialism. The hosts critique the film for its rich moments of subtle humor and innovative concepts but argue it becomes unfocused in the second half, shifting from existential questions to heavy-handed political themes. They analyze Robert Pattinson's standout dual role performance, along with contributions from other notable actors like Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette. The episode wraps with reflections on Bong Joon Ho's recurring themes and a funny personal anecdote about South Korea's macaron shop craze, highlighted within the film. They conclude that while 'Mickey 17' is visually appealing and entertaining, it doesn't reach the same profound levels as the director's previous works like 'Parasite' or 'Memories of Murder.'
In this episode, author Edward Ashton joins me to discuss the film Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, based on Edward's book Mickey 7. The film and the book series explores themes of unfettered capitalism, whether or not people have souls, and the theoretical possibilities of colonizing other planets. In an earlier episode, I interviewed Edward Ashton about his book Mickey 7 and the sequel Antimatter Blues. At the time he had told me that Brad Pitt had picked up the rights to his film for Warner Brothers starring Robert Pattinson in the title role and costarring Toni Collete, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo. Now that Edward is free from the NDAs he had signed during filming, we are able to discuss the exciting process of seeing his book turned into a new creative work.

It's been six long years since the last Bong Joon-ho film, Parasite, swept through the 2020 Oscars, including the prize of Best Picture. A beloved filmmaker that has brought us both intimate, grounded thrillers as well as propulsive genre yarn, Bong Joon-ho is once again dipping his toe into sci-fi class warfare with Mickey 17. Featuring Robert Pattinson in multiple roles and another "freaky little guy" routine, does Mickey 17 continue the South Korean director's streak of bracing storytelling?
Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) returns from his Oscar triumph five years ago with his first directorial effort since his worldwide smash Parasite, which remains the ONLY foreign language film to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture. This time around, he's directing a high concept sci-fi comedy adventure taking place in the future focusing on Mickey (Robert Pattinson) who works as an "Expendable" for a growing organization looking to colonize a snowy desolate planet. His job entails being used as a tester of various hostile environments, new viruses, potential vaccines, and any number of deadly situations which can occur on said planet. The key to his survival is that he doesn't survive most of these ordeals....they have the technology to simply clone him again to restart the process. :o And hilarity ensues! Also among this stacked cast are Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yuen. For Mickey, it's time to find out if the 17th time's the Charm. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
