In San Francisco, Mabuhay Gardens was the epicenter of punk. Located on Broadway at the edge of North Beach and Chinatown, it was ground zero for the city's emerging punk movement in the late 1970s. The Filipino restaurant and nightclub hosted many of the era's most iconic punk bands — including the Avengers, Dead Kennedys, and the Jim Carroll Band. Even punk rock icon Patti Smith took the stage. In this episode, we dig into the history and legacy of the so-called "Fab Mab." In 1973, writer Steve Englehart decided to crossover the two titles he was writing for Marvel, The Avengers and The Defenders for a summer-long epic that has come to be known as The Avengers / Defenders War!With artists Bob Brown (Avengers) and Sal Buscema (Defenders), Englehart scripted an epic tale that crossed galaxies and pitted hero against hero against villains for the ultimate contest. This was during a time when crossovers of this scale were not common and this story has gone on to become a legendary tale of Marvel's classic '70s era!Your hosts, as always, are Chris Karam and Brad Page.

After following them for quite some time, I am joined by the wonderful FreakazoidCosplay (aka Ashley) for a great discussion about some of their favorite fandoms. We first kick things off with the dual superhero powers, DC and Marvel. Ashley talks about how they first got their start with DC - from the animated series and movies, to the most recent slate, the comics, and much more. We're talking about what their favorites are, their favorite characters, and how it was growing up in a Marvel household. Which leads directly into how they finally got into Marvel. What their first entry point was, the movies they like, the characters that keeps them coming back for more (and which characters don't - and some may surprise you!) We talk about the upcoming Avengers movie w/Dr. Doom, and what they hope for in the future. Then, after we're all superheroed out, we delve into Netflix's Castlevania series. Ashley talks about how they found out about the show, their favorite characters, and what drew them to the series (and its sequel). We talk about how highly rated the series is, and how if you've not watched it, why its worth the watch. We wrap up with talking about Cosplay. Ashley talks about their first experiences getting into the cosplay scene, parental support, and and the characters they represent (including an anime throwback that caught me off guard!). We talk about photo shoots, con experiences, and what their future and dream cosplays are. We dig into Episodes 1 and 2 of the series, unpacking what works, what utterly shocks, and how the familiar heroes we know become something far more horrifying. We'll talk survivors (Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Riri Williams), we'll explore zombie versions of icons, we'll explore apocalypse world-building and pacing, and we'll ask: is this a re-imagining of “What If…?” turned max horror — or something the MCU truly needed? Whether you're a hardcore Marvel fan or just zombie-curious, you'll want to buckle up. In this in-depth conversation, legendary painter and storyteller Alex Ross takes listeners behind the curtain of some of his most ambitious and thought-provoking projects across DC, Marvel, and Dynamite.Ross begins with the haunting Batman: Black and White – Case Study, written by Paul Dini, a noir-style exploration of Bruce Wayne's fractured psyche and the fine line between justice and obsession. He then turns to Avengers/Invaders, co-written with Jim Krueger, a modern-day saga where the original World War II Invaders are thrust into the present-day Marvel Universe. The time-displaced heroes clash with contemporary Avengers, forcing both eras to confront what it truly means to be a hero in vastly different moral landscapes.Next, Ross discusses JSA: Thy Kingdom Come, created with Geoff Johns, Dale Eaglesham, and Fernando Pasarin — a powerful spiritual sequel to Kingdom Come. The story brings the older, war-torn Superman of that alternate Earth into the mainstream DCU, confronting the Justice Society and reexamining faith, legacy, and the enduring cost of heroism. Finally, Ross reflects on his work at Dynamite Entertainment with Project Superpowers, where he and Jim Krueger resurrected and reimagined dozens of Golden Age public domain heroes — from the Green Lama to the Black Terror — breathing new mythic life into forgotten icons while exploring how timeless ideals can evolve for modern audiences.
Mark Ruffalo (AppleTV's Task, Marvel's Avengers) explores how America can find compassion in divided times, the dangers of political violence, and why activism must be rooted in empathy. Ruffalo reflects on losing his brother to gun violence, the climate crisis, and his journey with The Solutions Project, which uplifts frontline communities fighting for change. Together, they ask: how do we move beyond fear, rage, and dehumanization into a future of justice, unity, and imagination? THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! ZipRecruiter (try it FREE!)

News: There has been a lot of speculation on what is happening with Storybook Land Canal Boats at Disneyland since it's refurbishment started. We finally have at least part of an answer! Between the patchwork section and Mr.Toad's section a new Rapunzel tower will rise, with wanted posters for Flynn Rider and a secluded dock with a boat inspired by the film. A trellis on the Casey Jr. bridge will feature twinkling lights and play “When Will My Life Begin?” during the day, and “I See the Light” at night. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/rapunzels-tower-coming-to-storybook-land-canal-boats-at-disneyland/ Some new live entertainment is coming to the Disneyland Resort. A casting call has gone out for seven improv actors, vocalists, movers, and dancers for a new production. They are also looking for band members to accompany the show. Submissions are open through October 17th. No word on when this show will debut or what it is. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/10/02/your-dream-job-is-now-hiring-at-disneyland/ Not too long ago, Rex from Toy Story came to Pixar Pier. He is back, but this time he is ready to party. Partysaurus Rex, which is Rex in his party outfit of a viking hat, with red lochs hanging out, and a few necklaces with colorful beads and a peace sign. You can catch Partysaurus Rex in the 2012 Pixar short Partysaurus Rex, which is part of the Toy Story Toons series. – https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/partysaurus-rex-meet-and-greet-dca/ There is a new way to interact, and maybe get a photo with, you favorite Avenger. There is a new “Avengers Assemble” moment in Avengers Campus where a few Avengers come out together, are introduced by the F.R.I.D.A.Y. voice over the PA, pose for a group photo in front of the Avengers' jeep, then break up to meet with guests for photos in the area. After a short time, the F.R.I.D.A.Y. voice comes back and informs them they are needed elsewhere, and they disperse. – https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/avengers-assemble-new-moment-avengers-campus-dca/ One of our favorite previously turned down cast members, and Disney Legend Josh Gad was back at Disneyland recently. This time, he was working the Haunted Mansion. This took place before the Holiday overlay was installed, as he can be seen talking to the caretaker, dancing with the ballroom ghosts, and much more! You might remember that Josh previously worked on the Jungle Cruise as a skipper, was a conductor on the Disneyland Railroad, and worked the Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World. To see his experience, check out the link in our show notes. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/10/03/a-disney-celebrity-just-became-a-haunted-mansion-caretaker-and-we-are-so-jealous/ https://youtu.be/UTHSUCKCY8s?si=WHP0bZie-C41dFHb The Broken Spell Lounge at the Disneyland Hotel, which opened back in October of 2024, just now got it's permanent sign. The new sign hangs from the ceiling with a magic wand and twinkling stars surrounding the Broken Spell Lounge name. The lounge is usually open from 4pm to 10pm, with live music daily at 5:30pm, 6:45pm, and 8pm. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/10/05/better-late-than-never-something-new-just-arrived-at-a-popular-disney-hotel-lounge/ Not only is Disneyland celebrating 70 years, but so is the Mickey Mouse Club! The Mickey Mickey Mouse Club premiered on October 3, 1955. To celebrate, some new, retro-style merchandise has come to the resort. There are some classic Mickey ears, a Mickey Mouse Club Member jacket, a Mickey plush, tote bag, tee, and more! – https://www.micechat.com/424727-disneyland-news-ticket-increase-aerial-construction-photos/ In the hub at Disneyland, there are pumpkins that represent each land of the park, with a character representative. Adventureland started this Halloween season with Tarzan, but has been swapped to Jose from Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. This change makes sense since Tarzan's Treehouse has been replaced with the Adventureland Treehouse. It is interesting that they swapped this out mid-season. – https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/disneyland-adventureland-pumpkin-update/ We have a couple of construction updates to tell you about around the resort. First, the Disneyland Hotel security gates near the old ESPN Zone building are still closed, but the new gates are installed and should be open soon. Five months after its release, Thunderbolts is still living rent-free in my soul. This is our third conversation about the film — not a recap, but a reflection on what sticks after the hype fades. From Bucky's scars to Yelena's transformation, John Walker's stigma, Ghost's pain, Red Guardian's yearning, and Val as a dark mirror of Fury — these are Marvel's flawed, haunted heroes who still earn their place. And then there's the tension: Sam Wilson, trying to form his own Avengers, only sees Bucky running with misfits under Val. That collision of perspectives — polished Captain America vs. scarred Thunderbolts — sets the stage for some of Marvel's most charged storytelling ahead. The Void, friendship, redemption, second chances — this is Marvel's grittier team story, and it deserves a spotlight.
