Join James and Erin (Unabashedly Obsessed, Newsies Minute) as they explore the 2002 Britney Spears vehicle Crossroads one minute at a time! New episodes every weekday!
Why is this audio file so long? The time from the last word of the statement to the last second of the track totals 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 8 minutes and 46 seconds doesn't sound like a long time until you are confronted with just how long it can drag on. 8 minutes and 46 seconds is how long it took to end George Floyd's life [https://www.8m46s.com]. At the Scavengers Network, we support the nationwide protests against police brutality; because Black Lives Matter. It is not enough to simply be “not racist”. You must be anti-racist. Neither of us is normally super excited about deleted scenes, because they’re usually deleted for a reason. But in this case, there’s at least one with some really rather important information that would have been pretty great if they’d left it in the movie, and there are a BUNCH of truly amazing Justin Long moments. We’re breaking form slightly this week, but trust us, it’s for the best. We’re in the credits, which are also a music video, but it’s in-universe? Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
In the last pre-credits minute, we get a bit of a post-performance epilogue that calls back to the beginning of the movie. James and Erin have different memories about what kind of terrain it takes place on and the credits begin to roll which brings us to the person you've all been waiting to see. Everyone's favorite Unit Production Manager: Victor Ho!!!!! Next week we're going to have two slightly longer episodes. One will be about the credits performance of "Overprotected" and the outtakes interspersed among it. The other will be about the Deleted Scenes, some of which answer a lot of questions we've posed over the course of this movie! So stay tuned! Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
It's....haha....it's a short episode today as Britney/Lucy finishes up the concert video/audition. So Erin and James talk about whether either of them have seen Britney Spears in concert. And also other concerts/shows they've seen. Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
In this episode we talk about the song "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" about as in depth as we can. We talk about it's chart history, what award it won, and even do a deep dive on Wayne Isham, the director of the music video for the song (as well as lots of other songs you've heard of) Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
In this episode, we discuss the best bit of stage business Dan Aykroyd does in this movie, pot lip balm, the American Idol feel of the performance space where Lucy is singing...oh and we touch on the shirt she's wearing just a little. Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
Pop gives his best (?) attempt at an apology, we talk about Lucy's response, wonder about what the cab driver is doing, and prepare for a week of performance in this, the stretchiest of home stretches. Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
We learn about “Spy Kids”, which is a random and weird thing to happen on this podcast, but also not the WEIRDEST thing to happen on this podcast. We also contemplate what “Crossroads” by Stephen King would look like. (Also stick around after the outro music to find out where the episode title came from.) Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Lucy and company prepare to fly home. It’s a light minute, not a whole lot happens, but we’re still confused about exactly what capacity Lucy was planning to participate in this music audition thing, because people keep talking about her coming to the audition but after the karaoke situation where Mimi blanked and Lucy took over, it’s rather unclear who is actually going to be doing the auditioning. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Kit goes to visit Mimi, and somehow Mimi ends up comforting Kit—not because Kit expects or asks for it, but because Mimi is a really, really good friend and person and she recognizes that Kit is hurting, even as she herself is also hurting. And then Pop has a whimsical party (?) Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Mimi reads a magazine, and James tells us all about it—it’s got a band on the cover that *isn’t* N*SYNC! Erin gets confused about which hot guy whose name start with “Ty” was in the “Toxic” video, and we try to track down an article from the magazine that Erin decides she really wants to read. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Pop continues to be the worst. James and Erin have some questions about Lucy’s involvement in this audition. Ben is a little bit dim. We realize that throughout this movie, the male characters have just been really unhappy with Lucy and her choices. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
CW: Brief discussion of losing a baby (but nothing close to in-depth. More of a talk about using that event as a plot device) In this episode, James asks Erin a question about the plot of the movie and it leads to a very good, though long, discussion. We also come to something of a conclusion about what one of the messages of the movie is!
CW: Discussion of miscarriage, fetal death, and possible surgery In this episode, we discuss Southern accents, collect calls, and how amazing Taryn Manning is. Also, a LONG discussion about what the timeline of Mimi's tragedy could possibly have been.
CW: Discussion about sexual assault and miscarriage. In this episode, the bad stuff gets really bad. We kind of just say what happens and then move on to talk about other stuff, since it's largely just a lot of montage shots. We discuss what "Uncredited" means on an IMDB page! Theme music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
CW: This episode begins a discussion about a sexual assault. It's not mentioned specifically in the movie but we discuss it. Welcome to Day 2 of The Serious Week. Things get worse as we met Dylan's "sick friend" and Kit notices what Dylan is drinking. Erin uses some information she got from our good friend Daniel and we talk about how much cleaner this "Damning evidence" could have been. Theme music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
Hey everyone. It's James. Let me tell you about the feelings I had when I realized that it was going to be my week to edit The Serious Week. They were multitude. This week is going to get heavy, but today's episode isn't there yet. We have some fun meeting a character we've been talking about from the beginning, talking about how to lie well, and talking about how weird names are. So enjoy! And don't worry. We'll get through this week together Theme music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
We lose more time in this minute, and honestly we still don’t know where it went. But we learn about a song, and speculate as to not only where the time went, but also why Kit is so insistent that Mimi go along with her plan. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Kit and Mimi are not where James initially thought they should be. Ben and Lucy are in a place that Erin contends they should not be but James says is mostly fine. (Curious and don’t mind being sliiiiightly spoiled for tomorrow’s minute’s beginning? Skip ahead to 2:31 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgD43dL_o4E) Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Dylan is a bad boyfriend, Kit doesn’t want to make waves, and Lucy is “tired”. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
The timeline for EVERYTHING changes WILDLY in this minute. Also we don’t actually know how this recording contest is supposed to work. We would really like Shonda Rimes to come on the show and explain all this, so if anyone knows her… Also, as promised, the only Crossroads-tagged fan fiction I could find (and it doesn’t *appear* to actually be Crossroads-related, but it’s tagged, so…if anyone reads it, let us know how it goes, okay?): https://archiveofourown.org/works/22124248 Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
It’s time for some stock footage of LA! A building for a label Britney isn’t on, the Hollywood sign (and all its history, which includes Hugh Hefner, Gene Autry, Andy Williams, and Alice Cooper)… Mimi gets her wish, and the movie basically ignores it. Which is a real shame because Mimi is the whole reason any of them are even THERE. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
This episode is largely about female rock stars of the mid 90's. What rocker did James think was SO badass in like 95 or 96? How did Erin acquire Jagged Little Pill? Who won the 1997 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and how many Tracys did she beat? Also a little bit about Hollywood (but there will be more next week!!)
Warning: The first part of this episode is....explicit LOL. Let's just say we celebrated the occasion in Classic James and Erin fashion. By being 12 year olds. Also: a very chaste discussion about calling parents by multiple names
Not a lot happens in this episode. There's some singing. And some pre-smooching. And that's pretty much it. But, of course, Erin and James are able to find SOMETHING to talk about. We spend most of the episode brainstorming for other occurrences of a particular kind of musical performance in a movie.
In this episode, Ben plays what he's written and Lucy starts singing. We talk about a piano company, writing songs, what Henry's been up to back home, and how Lucy would have learned the Britney Spears Throat Singing Technique.
This episode, we start with a Locketwatch, move into NEWS ABOUT A CROSSROADS SEQUEL (Don't get your hopes up.), and then talk about the surprise Ben made Lucy. What could it be? Does he have the power to create whole buildings out of nothing? Also, the best line delivery since "Hey, what's up?" CW for discussion of unplanned pregnancy and the tough decisions that result from that, including abortion and choice. We break down the possible paths that took Lucy’s mom to motherhood. Erin’s been making one assumption for almost 20 years, but James brings up a very good second option that actually makes more sense, and makes Lucy’s mom a more sympathetic character. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Ben follows Lucy into the bathroom. No, not like that. They have a touching moment, and James gets choked up. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Lucy and her mom need to have a talk, but we don’t get to hear it. It’s raining, just, a LOT. Kit wears cat shirts. Look, it’s a slow minute, y’all. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
How do the photos in movies come to be? Are they photoshopped? Do they do a photoshoot? Are Lucy’s brothers werewolves? Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
We get to meet Lucy’s mom! Who is super beige, and almost seems like she doesn’t remember who Lucy is. James tells us about Kim Cattrall and Tucson. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
In this, the last minute of the first hour of the movie, Lucy and the Gang arrive at her mom's place and Lucy says goodbye to everyone because she's completely leaving. She's done with the adventure. This is it for Lucy. Bye Lucy!
In this episode, Ben and Lucy get long-distance blocked by Mimi's encounter in nature, and we discuss whether or not surprises are always good.
In this episode, Mimi looks for a restroom in the desert, Britney reads some poetry, we discuss the origins of the movie, and then we take a bit to discuss the career of Dido. You'll see why ;-)
In this episode, Lucy decides that the gang is going camping! Mimi and Ben are fine with it. Kit is....feeling some emotions. Then we start a camping scene, talk about thumbinets, thumb tucking, and hair rollers. It's a roller coaster of an episode and yes, it DOES contain James's Strong Bad impression
In this episode, Ben takes the girls to go look at a.....sun....event. We're pretty sure we came down on the side of "sunset" but that has certain implications about the driving that Ben is doing that are...intense. Kit gets poetic. Mimi gets defiant.
Why was Ben in jail? For a pretty bad reason, if you ask us. Not that we’re lawyers, or anything, but this seems like a stupid reason to go to jail. What would have been a better crime? We don’t know, but surely there is one. CW: Mention of child abuse (but no details, and with a happy ending!) and hypothetical sex with a hypothetical minor Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
We learn the truth about Serial Killer Ben. An entire story flashes across Anson Mount’s eyes and it’s beautiful. James tells us about some bands—one is in this minute, the other is not. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Ben explains why he’s so upset. (It’s because woman are always eating his sandwiches.) (It’s not.) Erin shares a story of a time when she could empathize with Ben’s plight. James shares a story of a time when he couldn’t because Ben’s plight isn’t really much of a plight. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
Ben is done with his nap and he is NOT happy. Throwing air, backwards-kicking dirt, he throws a full-on man tantrum. About what? We don’t know. Yet. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
The girls sing Shania Twain. That’s it, that’s the minute. (James tells us about the song they sing, we learn a little bit about some Lifetime Movie-style Shania scandal, and then James offers a live lookup of whether or not Altoids are a Pepsi product.) Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
This episode certainly has more than yesterday's, though perhaps not as much as we'd prefer. We talk about cameras, gas prices, and car operation. But MOSTLY, starting with an FMK, we blast you in the ears with some Hot Soda Takes. So buckle up.
This minute of the movie is 100% hijinks. Lucy needs to fish something out of Ben's pants and the others are having a fun time watching. We play FMK.
We talk about a lot of different things in this episode: Living Mascots, Fake Tattoos, Burritos, and the perennial favorite: Britney's Hair and Makeup people!
CW: Sexual Assault This is the second part (of two) where we want to preface it with a CW because we're going to get to the end of Mimi's story and then the sun suddenly comes out in full force! And then James...dies?
CW: Reference to Sexual Assault That content warning goes for today and tomorrow (I will post one for tomorrow's episode, too, of course). In this episode, we discuss the FANCY HOTEL that they're in with a real life lobby horse. Then Mimi starts telling a story of the time she chose to go against her tendency not to drink. And a new mystery surfaces!
Lucy opens up to the girls about her mom. That’s…pretty much it. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
These girls sure do know how to order room service. They're spending, like, ALL the money they just made. One thing they're not good at, though? Asking questions. Theme Music: "Crunky" by Freedom Trail Studio
It’s Tuesday night-slash-the wee hours of Wednesday morning. A 22-year-old man, three young women covered in glitter, and a pile of $1 bills walk into a hotel. No, that’s not a joke, that’s the plot of today’s minute. Well, technically the time in between Monday’s minute and yesterday’s minute, but the plot of today’s minute is “underage drinking” and we had to figure out why these kids were given a room with an unlocked minibar. Theme Music: “Crunky” by Freedom Trail Studio
