Well, former GATE students are now wondering if they were unknowingly trained for covert missions. From Morse code worksheets to speaking Russian as a ten-year-old—what were they really preparing us for?

Huh? Why? Good question: it's because of Rodriguez's approach to economical filmmaking, which would come to whoopsiedoodle dominate everything uh oh! We get into it, as well as one or two other topics. Banderas is actually Spanish, not Mexican (I looked) but I don't think this invalidates my broader point.  Corbin Reccomends the Mars Trilogy. Matt reccomends 'Hail Satan?" a documentary about jerks.  Next week's episode is about a few movies trying new things in digital around the early/mid-aughts, including: Me and You and Everyone we Know, Once, and Timecode.

28 Days Later is a "Zombie" movie made with a TV Camera that you watch on a big screen. It's really great! We talk about the practical and impractical applications of digital technology, materiality and zombie movies, the movie's depiction of fascism and soildering, then and now, and also what a spectacular bummer this thing is.  Read a great essay about filmic materiality and the zombie movie here. Research also pulled up this extemely weird but kind of nifty essay about how 28 Days Later is kind of about the new apocolyptic bent that food writing took in the early aughts.  A very good interview with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle can be read here.  Matt reccomends 'Cinema's First Nasty Women,' an anthology fron Kino Lorber, available now. Corbin reccomends Dinner in America. He also likes that new Pixar show on Disney+ but your milage might vary. Next Week's episode is about either Spy Kids 2 or 3, we havent quite decided yet. If anyone had a strong opinion about which is the superior one, tell us I guess.

On the thirty- third episode of ATFT, my friends philosopher pirate Daniel Carbonell- Sifontes and filmmaker/ video editor Max McBride join me on the third edition of the “fan- favorite” ATFT segment, #FilmTwitter Trends! Later in the episode, ATFT regular writer/ director Samy El- Kamel joins the conversation as a surprise guest! This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers.  Towards the end of last year, there was this trend going around #FilmTwitter (with the platform now called X) where someone would post a decade and list their favorite film each year of that decade. Nearly every decade became a trend at this time and it became a fun thing to think about and then answer. I told Daniel about this trend which led to us three recording the 90s version back in March. Listen to Episode 17 to hear our 90s favorites! We enjoyed recording it so much that we decided to take on the next decade: the 2000s. It is the decade in which we grew up in so there are some nostalgic, core favorites from childhood along with more serious films we discovered when we got older. That being said, we have many similar favorites but also a lot of different picks.  Both Daniel and Max have been guests on ATFT several times each but this is both of their second times on the “wide release” of this podcast! This episode was originally around 2 hours and 20 minutes so this conversation was definitely trimmed down. Daniel is currently in grad school in Denver and has long been an excellent photographer. Max is currently developing a short film and has a YouTube channel where he posts short films and documentaries as well as videos focused on his interests such as Dungeons and Dragons. He is expected to release an important video soon so be sure to subscribe to his channel by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/@maxleevideo/featured. Also be sure to follow Daniel's photography Instagram @allmynegativesarehere. This episode was recorded on May 13, 2024.  In this episode, Daniel, Max, and I go through our list of 2000s film favorites and discuss them briefly as well as talking about other 2000s films. Daniel and Max especially more often had similar 2000s favorites, connecting over big franchises like Spy Kids and Star Trek. One franchise we all continuously revel in discussing: Harry Potter. A few of the significant, widely well- recieved films discussed were The Pianist, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and There Will Be Blood. Some short tangents include whether we prefer watching films alone or with others, the optimal movie length (in which I roll my eyes), and celebrity crushes. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 54 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Kelsi and Trey of The Extra Credits podcast to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, Spy Game (2001). There is a phrase the Director Watch hosts like to use a lot when it comes to films starring two movie stars where one of the stars is a legend of the past and the other is a future star in the making that goes on to be one for their generation. This is called the “baton passing” film; think of Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in The Color of Money and you will understand the kind of film Spy Game is should be because it should not just be a passing of the movie star mantel, but it should also be a movie to showcase what makes these two actors so special; with Spy Game being that for Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Instead, director Tony Scott gives us a political spy thriller that feature the duo less than one would want, making this more a vehicle for late career Redford to take center stage and face both the realities of his life as a spy, and the protégé (Pitt) he misguided on his way into the field. It makes for a messy, complicated, fascinating film to break down as Ryan, Jay, Kelsi and Trey talk about their reactions to the film, the release of this film post 9/11, the poorly written love interest played by Catherine McCormack, the lack of veteran actors that made Scott's other films shine, an examination of Redford and Pitt's career, and some remarks on the better spy movie from 2001, Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h51m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Tony Scott with a review of his next film, Man on Fire. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. New episode out now! We delve into the world of Monk with the season 4 episode “Mr. Monk and the Astronaut”. We discuss the character of Adrian Monk, propose the idea that the show exists in a slightly different reality, debate how it balances representation vs accuracy vs commercialism, and believe the long-term success hinged on the incredible talents of Tony Shalhoub (and an excellent theme song). We get into how the show portrays living with OCD and the situational depiction of the disorder; we cover varied opinions from people who live with it and wonder at the intentions of the writers and the studio along with the acting and directing choices. We appreciate that Monk goes to therapy and like that we see him react and then reflect, think the villain Wagner has horrible taste in cocktails but a pretty great alibi, love Captain Stottlemeyer (and all his roles), and are unenthused by the character of Natalie. Katy coins a new word, Carrie dusts off her psychology degree, Maddy believes children are evil beasts, and Mack is a Spy Kids franchise connoisseur. We also wonder if we would recognize an astronaut out and about in the street, cannot imagine owning a house, get mad at the inaccurate use of barbiturates, and reflect on the majesty of 2000s children's movies. Give it a listen to hear about laser pointers, Daddy Captain, YouTube compilations, garage doors, and men failing upward. Enjoy! Carla Gugino Interview: From Spy Kids to Playing Verna in The Fall of the House of Usher

Carla Gugino has been quietly amassing one of the most diverse bodies of work in Hollywood, and it's about time that's recognized. She's got a disaster movie in San Andreas, loads of family-friendly adventure films including Race to Witch Mountain, Night at the Museum, and the Spy Kids movies, and she's currently soaring in the horror space with projects like Gerald's Game and The Haunting of Hill House. We'd be here all day if I listed everything, but do give her lengthy filmography a quick scan. I'd be willing to bet that in almost all cases, consecutive projects fall in different genres.Just recently, Gugino got the opportunity to show off a good deal of her seemingly limitless range in a single project, The Fall of the House of Usher. The stellar new Netflix series from Mike Flanagan and the “Flanafamily” focuses on Roderick and Madeline Usher, the extremely wealthy and powerful brother-sister duo pushing Fortunato Pharmaceuticals up and up while leaving a trail of dark secrets in their wake. They think they are untouchable, but when their heirs start dying one by one, they're forced to revisit past choices and reckon with Gugino's character, Verna, or rather, “The Raven.”While Verna is often seen in human form, she's not. As Gugino has explained in the past, “She's not the devil. She's not even evil.” She added, “You could say she's the executor of fate or the executor of karma.” Just before their death, each Usher sees a manifestation of Verna, and each version is different. It's a one-of-a-kind challenge and Gugino absolutely soars while tackling it, so much so that she was just honored with a Critics Choice Nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series. In honor of that accolade, the success of The Fall of the House of Usher, and everything Gugino's accomplished in film and television thus far, she joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation and offered up a closer look at how she did what many strive to do in Hollywood — avoid being “boxed in” and build a career with a wealth of unique creative opportunities.
