Welcome to another episode of Myopia Movies, where we ruin your childhood one VHS tape at a time. This week, we're stepping into the neon-lit fever dream that is Mannequin — a movie that asks the important question: “What if a department store mannequin came to life… and immediately dated Andrew McCarthy?” That's right. It's the ‘80s, where unemployment was quirky, retail workers had unlimited creative freedom, and absolutely nobody thought to question whether this relationship required psychiatric intervention. Featuring window displays that apparently stop traffic, villainous retail executives who behave like cartoon burglars, and enough synth music to power a mall arcade for a decade, Mannequin is pure Reagan-era fantasy. We'll talk about Kim Cattrall somehow making “ancient Egyptian soul trapped in a mannequin” feel completely reasonable, why every department store in movies looked like Studio 54, and whether Hollywood accidentally created the world's most charming horror premise. Plus: Hollywood Montrose steals the entire movie, James Spader continues his career-long commitment to being a smarmy weirdo, and we try to determine if this film is actually sweet… or just deeply, deeply strange. So grab your shoulder pads, crank up Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, and join us as we ask the timeless question: does Mannequin hold up… or should it have stayed in the display window? How will Mannequin hold up? Directed by Michael Gottlieb Starring: Andrew McCarthy Kim Cattrall Meshach Taylor James Spader G. W. Bailey Estelle Getty

They examined the film's production, including its $100,000 Guardian creature puppet, visual effects by Richard Edlund and Steve Johnson, and the Fox backlot sets used for filming. The hosts discussed the film's characters, particularly James Hong's performance as Lopan, and analyzed key scenes including the supernatural battles and optical effects. They compared the film favorably to previous episodes' selections like "Rawhead Rex" and "Transmutations," concluding that "Big Trouble in Little China" was more entertaining and well-executed. The podcast included technical difficulties with Ryan's Blu-ray player and audio issues, but they managed to complete their thorough analysis of the film's narrative structure, special effects, and cultural significance. Clive Barker Podcast Discussion Ryan and José discussed their podcast episode focusing on Clive Barker's Contemporary Commentaries for 1986, where they selected Big Trouble in Little China for comparison with Barker's film. They reflected on previous comparisons, with José favoring Enter the Dragon over The Forbidden and both preferring Salome over Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The conversation ended with them preparing to discuss Big Trouble in Little China after the opening 20th Century Fox logo. Big Trouble in Little China Analysis José and Ryan discussed the film Big Trouble in Little China, focusing on its reception as a flop at the time of release despite now being considered one of John Carpenter's best movies. They analyzed the character dynamics, particularly how Jack Burton's story takes a backseat to Wang's narrative, and discussed the film's unique blend of grounded and fantasy elements. The conversation also covered the film's production history, including casting considerations and a 2014 comic book continuation that picks up where the film ends. Big Trouble in Little China Analysis Ryan and José discussed the film "Big Trouble in Little China," focusing on its action sequences, characters, and supernatural elements. They analyzed specific scenes, including the extended ending with the red Camaro and the fight sequences involving different gangs. They also reflected on their childhood experiences watching the movie and its cultural impact. Big Trouble in Little China Discussion José and Ryan discussed the movie "Big Trouble in Little China," focusing on various aspects including character details, special effects, cinematography, and music. They explored specific plot points, such as the roles of characters like Jack Burton, Gracie Law, and Miao Yin, as well as the movie's use of animation and sets. They compared it to Silver Bullet, concluding that Silver Bullet was better despite Gary Busey's presence in Transmutations. The conversation also covered production details like the sloping corridor set and optical effects used in the movie. Film Location and Production Planning José and Ryan discussed filming locations, noting that costs and logistics led to filming at the Fox Backlot in LA instead of San Francisco. They analyzed various movie scenes, including action sequences, character dynamics, and set details, while also discussing the technical aspects of water and bullet effects in filmmaking. The conversation included references to other films and characters, and they explored ideas for creating graphics comparing monsters from different movies. Big Trouble in Little China Analysis José and Ryan discussed various aspects of the film "Big Trouble in Little China," including specific scenes, character backgrounds, and production details. They analyzed the film's tropes, such as the door scene, and discussed deleted scenes and the roles of actors like Kim Cattrall and Dennis Dun. The conversation also touched on the film's set design, miniatures, and monsters, as well as the background of the music video for "Dolly Dagger" featuring James Hong. Movie Production Discussion Meeting José and Ryan discussed various aspects of a movie, including character backgrounds, plot details, and special effects. They talked about actors' roles, such as Susie Pai's transition from cheerleading to modeling and acting, and Carter Wong's casting due to his Thai boxing skills. This week on The 3 Retro Movie Geeks, things get stylishly surreal as we revisit the 80s rom-com fantasy Mannequin. With Paul and Scott both away, Rob is holding things together — thankfully joined by friend of the show Marc “Wax on, wax off” Parslow for a lively and nostalgic deep dive. We explore the quirky tale of Jonathan Switcher, a struggling artist who finds love in the most unexpected way… with a department store mannequin who comes to life. From Andrew McCarthy's earnest charm to Kim Cattrall's iconic performance as Emmy, we break down what makes this film such a unique entry in 80s cinema. Of course, no Mannequin discussion would be complete without celebrating Hollywood Montrose — Meshach Taylor's scene-stealing performance — and that unforgettable Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now soundtrack moment that defined a generation.

This is a big, huge, revealing talk with Chris Noth. Chris is an actor. He played Detective Mike Logan on Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Peter Florrick on The Good Wife, and William Bishop on The Equalizer. He was nominated for Golden Globe awards for Sex and the City and for The Good Wife. He's best known as Mr. Big in the HBO series Sex and the City, the Sex and the City movies that came later, and (spoiler alert) one episode of the follow-up series And Just Like That. Mr. Big, of course, was the, well, let's just call him the somewhat unattainable love interest of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. In case you're not aware, there's been a lot of, I guess we can call it, drama, surrounding Sex & the City. There have been rumors of tension between SJP and Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha, and there's been a bunch of criticism surrounding some of the characters and plotlines in the original series and the reboot, And Just Like That. But the biggest drama is surrounding Chris Noth. In 2021, there were several sexual assault allegations against Chris published in THR and The Daily Beast. He was never criminally charged and said at the time that it wasn't true, but there was an immediate impact. He was written off The Equalizer, for starters. Soon after, Sarah Jessica Parker and her SATC castmates, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, put out a public statement about the situation. I read it to you so you know exactly what we're talking about when Chris and I get into this. OK, so. After that, his lawyers told him to not say anything. So he stopped talking publicly. Behind the scenes, a lot more was going on. And you're about to hear about all of it. Episode 152 is a special live episode, and Sam is joined by comedian, actor, and writer Rose Matafeo. Recorded at Monkey Barrel Comedy at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2025. Rose has chosen Mannequin (90 mins). Released in 1987 and directed by Michael Gottlieb, the romantic comedy stars Kim Cattrall, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, and Meshach Taylor. Sam and Rose discuss what it's like to be a comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, how Rose discovered Mannequin, and how the film's animated title sequence does a lot of heavy lifting for the plot. Instantly unlock over 100 other episodes of our Star Trek recap show! We're getting into We ❤️ Movies Month here on The Nexus as well, that's right, it's time for us to (finally) take a look at the masterful Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country! When you really get down to it, putting the legendary villain of Khan aside, there's a real argument to be made that THISis the best of all Star Trek films. How incredible is this cold open with Captain Sulu? Did they drop the storyline of Scotty and Uhura sleeping together from the last movie? How great is it seeing Shatner fight himself in the prison break scene? Did Christopher Plummer's character ever read anyone other than Shakespeare? And we can all agree that the signatures at the end are great? PLUS: A history of the importance of various Dee Vee Dee extras! Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Kim Cattrall, Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, Bock Peters, Kurtwood Smith, David Warner, Christopher Plummer, and Michael Dorn as Colonel Worf; directed by Nicholas Meyer. The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again! Cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.
Long before Kim Cattrall appeared on HBO as the outspoken, sexually confident, “I'll try anything once” Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, she played an Egyptian woman under a spell and reincarnated as a shop-window dummy. Inspired by Pygmalion, the tale from Ovid's Metamorphoses poem which tells the story of a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved, it's admittedly the kind of storyline that was only plausible in the 1980s. And we loved every second of it!So hop on your motorcycle, meet us at Prince & Company Department Store, and keep an eye out for vicious guard-dog, Rambo, as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Bethany Wells, discuss “Mannequin” from 1987 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:If "Mannequin" seems a little formulaic to you, that's no accident. It was the first movie produced by Hollywood market research guru Joseph Farrell, who perfected the system of focus groups and test audiences that studios often use to tweak films and make them more commercial. No one from the original film, except Taylor, returned for the 1991 sequel, "Mannequin 2: On the Move." This time, the dummy-come-to-life was yet another "Pretty in Pink" alum, Kristy Swanson.Mannequin was written and directed by Michael Gottlieb, who had to wait until 1993 for another go with the Hulk Hogan vehicle "Mr. Nanny".Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.moviefone.com/news/mannequin-movie-facts/https://www.fast-rewind.com/trivia_mannequin.htmhttps://www.anothermag.com/fashion-beauty/11080/when-kim-cattrall-played-a-mannequin-come-to-life-in-1987Some sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! Sex and the City defined a generation - its fashion, friendships, and frank talk about love, sex, and ambition changed pop culture forever. But while Carrie and Samantha were inseparable on-screen, behind the scenes the dynamic between their real-life counterparts was anything but friendly. For years, rumours swirled about tension between the show's stars, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Then in 2017, Kim publicly broke her silence - confirming what fans had long suspected. There was officially beef between the pair. But what was it really about? And who was to blame? In this episode of The Beefing, Alexandria Funnell unpacks how a show built on friendship became one of television’s most infamous fallouts - and whether peace between Carrie and Samantha will ever truly be possible. America swooned for Sex and the City, HBO's glamorous dive into the lives of four women in New York City at the bleeding edge of the 21st century. But early in the series run, there were already rumors of cast disputes, factions, and trouble on set. Had the show been less singular, and less beloved, the actresses likely would have emerged unscathed by the stories, but instead, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker have spent two decades fielding questions about their alleged feud, and plotting career strategies around the will-it or won't-it return of their most famous work product. It doesn't sound like it's been easy for either of them. Want early, ad-free episodes, regular Dumpster Dives, bonus divorces, limited series, Zoom hangouts, and more? Kurt Russell auditioned for Han Solo but lost out to Harrison Ford. Well, if you ever wanted to get a glimpse of Kurt Russell's Han Solo, watch Big Trouble In Little China. We talk all about John Carpenter's cult-classic Western/Martial Arts fantasy, comedy, hell it has its own genre. Also, Kim Cattrall. Come on. Thanks for listening to our highly acclaimed movie podcast and please share a link with a friend, family member, or co-worker who loves these movies as much as you and us! And always, be kind, rewind, relax, and enjoy the show.
It's the shortest episode in the season so far which begs the question - is Mattress getting lazy or disciplined? Let's get the big news out of the way up top - Carrie and Aiden are in Splitsville. The real issue Tim wants to discuss however, is Giuseppe's mum potentially faking an Italian accent? Faking it in front of her son??? We also got Miranda being as frustrating as ever and Seema Patel's evolving journey into the No Soap Community. There is, of course, no development whatsoever in the central tension of the show - Lisa Todd Wexley and Marion's naughty work vibes.Support the show and our dog breed castings at twioat.substack.com Hosted on Acast. The Halloweenies dust off another John Carpenter classic out of the pile: 1986's Big Trouble in Little China. Aidan's throwing rocks at windows (literally), Miranda's found love again, and Charlotte's trying to keep it together — we're halfway through And Just Like That Season 3 and we have SO many feelings. In this bonus episode, we're serving up all our thoughts on the season so far. What's the deal with Carrie and Aidan's messy situationship? Is LTW about to cross a line with her hot editor? And why is everything suddenly going wrong for Seema? Mia, Holly and Jessie are making predictions, dissecting character arcs, and getting way too invested in antique glass that casts rainbows. Friends, we've got theories. So many theories.
