In this week's Born to Watch episode, Matt and Damo dive into a quirky 80s classic that inspired guilty pleasure rewatches and dreams of window display romance: Mannequin (1987). Join the guys as they reminisce about how Kim Cattrall's Emmy and Andrew McCarthy's Jonathan brought a spark of movie magic into their lives. From Matt's pre-teen obsession with Kim Cattrall to Damo's confusion over the movie's inexplicable ancient Egyptian backstory, no stone is left unturned in this Mannequin (1987) Movie Review.Released on February 13, 1987 (nearly 38 years to the day!), Mannequin tells the story of Jonathan Switcher, a struggling artist whose life takes an unexpected turn when his mannequin creation comes to life. Played by Cattrall, Emmy is the dream girl in window dressing form—literally. The duo's escapades in a struggling department store are filled with over-the-top characters, 80s montages, and laugh-out-loud moments, making this film a surreal yet iconic time capsule. As the hosts explore the nostalgia factor, they note the undeniable charm of Andrew McCarthy, a quintessential Brat Pack star. Damo points out that McCarthy's relatable, down-on-his-luck artist is impossible to hate—even when dragging a mannequin around town in plain sight. Kim Cattrall, meanwhile, exudes charisma, foreshadowing her future role as the fearless Samantha in Sex and the City.Of course, the conversation wouldn't be complete without a nod to Mannequin's over-the-top supporting cast. James Spader shines as a sniveling antagonist, while G.W. Bailey (aka Captain Harris from Police Academy) essentially reprises his role as a bumbling authority figure. And then there's Hollywood Montrose, played by Meshach Taylor, whose flamboyant energy adds humour and heart to the film. The soundtrack gets its due praise, with the guys singing the praises (literally) of Starship's Oscar-nominated hit, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fun fact: the song became one of the biggest singles of 1987, topping charts in both the U.S. and U.K. Yet despite its commercial success, Mannequin was panned by critics. Matt shares a particularly brutal review from Roger Ebert, who described the film as “dead.” Still, Damo counters with evidence of Mannequin's enduring appeal: a 46-week theatrical run and a cult following that persists today. The team breaks down the movie's highlights and low points in the Good, Bad, and Ugly segment. The guys rave about the film's outrageous opening scene set in ancient Egypt, complete with comedic subtitles. However, they can't help but cringe at questionable plot points—like the inexplicable romance centered on store displays and a climactic Benny Hill-style chase through the department store. And let's not forget the scene that drove Damo to rage: Andrew McCarthy casually tossing away a perfectly good choc wedge!Throughout the episode, Matt and Damo strike a balance between affectionate nostalgia and merciless critique. They reflect on how Mannequin epitomises the era's campy charm while acknowledging that its caricatured characters and absurd premise could never fly in today's world of high-concept blockbusters. So, if you're ready for a stroll down 80s memory lane filled with synth scores, big hair, and mannequins that spring to life, this episode is for you. Tune in for laughs, trivia, and some wild tangents about department store nostalgia, robot brothels, and Wilford Brimley's ageless face.Don't miss this blast from the past! Time to have some laughs with Sensei Randy as we review (spoiler alert) a Great movie from the 1980s. We'll move to the 90s for the next review, but today we talk about a cult classic. And how it didn't make money at the theater, but did later on. Here's a weird factoid: when I was searching on line for a graphic, I came across action figures of Jack Burton and other characters. Also, Kim Cattrall is in this movie. Sorry Kim, that we didn't get to mentioning that in the episode. Too much talk about the fighting! We do, however, reference Conan the Barbarian. Send us a textKatie and Bridget drink Starbucks with Drunk Kathy as they rewatch the movie: Sex and the City! Our four women are back in this movie that really enjoys being superficial, a little racist, and engaging in as little problem solving as humanly possible! Come along as we reunite with Carrie, a quippy writer who is finally going to marry the worst man we've all ever met: Mr. Big. But don't worry, her wedding gets arguably ruined by an unsupervised toddler, demonstrating just how solid their relationship was anyway. Carrie gets through it with the help of her friends. We've got Charlotte, who was very much a background character aside from making funny faces and pooping her pants, Miranda, a stressed out woman who we all say the reason she got cheated on was because she had a bush (what?), and Samantha, a fabulous, successful woman who would just like to eat guacamole and bone whenever she wants - SOUNDS LIKE A DREAM. Will our four friends all get through the nonsense that takes place? Did Lily really write the love emails to Carrie instead of Big!? Released in 2008, the movie was based on the hit TV series and stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Chris Noth, and Jennifer Hudson.

SITC is back with a new installment of Uncut and Unrated - extended "director's cuts" of some of our favorite episodes. FRATBOY F**KERY, our episode discussing a trio of "boys will be boys" blockbusters, returns to manspread its dick tentacles all over the airwaves. The original cut of this episode was released in April 2024 but the collective ethos of these misogynistic trash fires is now distinctly timely. Tune in for previously unreleased deep cuts about Doug Kenney and the birth of The National Lampoon, another cringeworthy tale about Torie's adolescent pervy playacting, and much more. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for all-new episodes including the first installment of our Director Retrospective series and our upcumming holiday special! --- Trigger warning: this episode discusses themes of sexual and verbal assault, rape, and body shaming. Welcome to the black hole of misogyny where "boys will be boys" and fratboy mentality reigned supreme to brainwash multiple generations. Torie struggles to kill her darlings in the National Lampoon classic ANIMAL HOUSE (1978). Kim Cattrall is the only saving grace in the postulating butt boil that is PORKY'S (1981). Witness the birth of virtual assault and revenge porn in the generation-defining Y2K flick, AMERICAN PIE (1999).

I couldn't help but wonder if Samantha should be the one writing a book about sex. Maybe she could finally explain where the G-spot is, or would it just end up being an episode of CBC? We go deep inside the part history-part outsider art photography book and discuss ancient aphrodisiacs, what Toronto singles really want in bed, the phallus in art, oysters, female Viagra, bundles of nerves, outdoor lovemaking, and where our fantasies really come from.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/cbcthepodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The actress Kim Cattrall has starred in films and on stage, but is probably best known for TV series Sex And The City. She is now in a new audio drama, Central Intelligence, which tells the story of the CIA from the perspective of Eloise Page. Eloise joined on the agency's first day in 1947 and became the highest ranking female officer. Kim joins Clare McDonnell to discuss Eloise, her passion for radio, and the enduring appeal of Samantha Jones. In sentencing Huw Edwards, the former BBC News presenter, for accessing child sexual abuse images, the magistrate said that he did not pose a risk to the public or children, and that an immediate custodial sentence was not necessary because the evidence showed he could be rehabilitated. Edwards must now attend 25 sex offender treatment sessions. We look at how these treatment programmes work and how effective they are proven to be, with Deborah Denis, CEO of the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and Professor Belinda Winder, Research Director of the Centre for Crime, Offending, Prevention and Engagement at Nottingham Trent University. The number of women taking up NHS cervical screening test invitations has been declining for the last 20 years. Healthwatch England did research with women who were reluctant to accept NHS invitations for screening and found that 73% would do an at-home test instead. A trial done by King's College London earlier this year found that if self-sample kits were available on the NHS, 400,000 more women would be screened per year. Chief Executive of Healthwatch England Louise Ansari and Dr Anita Lim, lead investigator of the King's College London trial, join Clare to tell us more.Sarah Pearse is the best-selling author of the Detective Elin Warner trilogy. She recently released the last novel in the series, The Wilds which includes themes of coercive control and was written with advice from the charity Refuge. "Send us a Fan Mail Text Message"Ever wondered what it would be like if a mannequin came to life in the heart of an 80s department store? Join us on a whimsical journey back to 1987 as we reminisce about the charmingly oddball film "Mannequin." We'll take you through the quirky adventures of Jonathan Switcher, played by Andrew McCarthy, and his enchanting muse Emmy, brought to life by Kim Cattrall. Listen in for personal anecdotes like that magical first viewing in a theater, and our humorous take on Jonathan's string of odd jobs and how they weave into the film's narrative. In this episode, we celebrate the cultural impact of "Mannequin," from its delightful soundtrack featuring Starship's iconic hit "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," to its nostalgic depiction of 80s fashion and retail therapy at stores like John Wanamaker's and Boscov's. We dive into the fantastical romance at the heart of the story and compare it to other beloved fantasy comedies of the era, such as "Splash." Our conversation also brings back memories of shopping malls and the vibrant 80s brands that defined an era of bold style choices and unforgettable music. Finally, we explore some fascinating behind-the-scenes trivia, imagining how the film might have looked with different casting choices like Michael J. Live long and prosper, Trekkies! We are here with the inimitable Rosalind Chao. You Might Know Her From: The Joy Luck Club, Mulan, 3 Body Problem, Sweet Tooth, M*A*S*H, Star Trek: The Next Generation & Deep Space Nine, I Am Sam, Just Like Heaven, Freaky Friday, and The L Word: Generation Q. Rosalind gave us all the goods on “the summer of Chao” with her one-two fantasy punch on Netflix, the fervent (and divided) base of fans formerly known as “trekkies,” and her history-making turns in The Joy Luck Club and the live-action Mulan (but is the industry making any progress? Sigh.) Plus, Rosalind teases Pei-Pei's return in Freaky Friday 2, explains why it was important to embrace the trans community with her role on Gen Q, and gets to the bottom of her tucking her hair behind her ear in Just Like Heaven where Reese Witherspoon f*cks a ghost.
