We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one. Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983. For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards. The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road." Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts. The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US. It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release. Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name. Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name. The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past. It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me! We have to highlight the US single from the album. The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general. The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers. STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer. This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space. It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take. Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album. Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers. Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done. Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34. Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho. Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song. The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk. U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. New York born, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, guitarist /singer- songwriter Ricky Byrd (inducted in 2015 with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts), has had a career in music, spanning more than 40 years. He spent over a decade as a member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts where he contributed music and background vocals to two platinum albums, I Love Rock 'n Roll and Up Your Alley, the gold certified Album, and four others for the band. Although best known for his time spent with The Blackhearts, Ricky has also recorded and played with Roger Daltrey, and toured with Ian Hunter and Southside Johnny. He has shared the stage with music royalty including Paul McCartney, Ringo, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Dion, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Page, Graham Nash, and Elvis Costello…to name just a few. While the lead guitarist is grateful for all his many musical achievements, Ricky often says one of his greatest gifts came about in 1987 when he started his journey in recovery. He's been clean and sober ever since, doing whatever he can to help others recover. It's his passion and what he's most proud of. Ricky began combining music with recovery in 2012, when he co-wrote a song with his friend, Richie Supa. The two wound up writing what is now considered a recovery classic “Broken Is A Place.” He wrote a second song, and then a third, and he didn't stop until the seeds of his 2017 Clean Getaway album were planted. Today, when he's not performing shows, he visits treatment facilities with his guitar and performs for residents. He also does a great deal of public speaking to help as many people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction as he can. Ricky has a new single out now – "Louanne" his first in many years that is unrelated to recovery . Ricky says, “My last 2 records “Clean Getaway” and “Sobering Times” had lyrics that spoke to the issues of addiction and recovery. With this new batch of tunes that I'm releasing as singles, I was consciously staying away from that subject matter. 'Louanne' started with the riff and chords, as do most of the songs I write. Then I start to mumble words and fool with a melody. As I was going through the usual process I blurted out “Louanne.. if anybody could you can.” Then came the line“Why don't you go on and get yourself right .. Louanne.” I knew at that point where I was headed! So I guess you can say lyrically Louanne is a song of encouragement for someone struggling with something, and the music is being driven by a nasty RnR riff.” Ricky Byrd joins us this week as our special guest to share his amazing story.
Cover versions – always fascinating!! Occasionally, an artist will cover an obscure song, or a deep cut by another artist and make it their own. But what about when the song has ALREADY been a hit? Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't; sometimes it ends up in court! This episode, we're looking at examples of all three. Our “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is, believe it or not, “And other bits of material” by Paper Lace, the most successful band to come out of Nottingham, UK. The hit single from the album, “The Night Chicago Died” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over three million copies! Who'd have thought it? Jeff also follows up with some rock news looking at Ozzy Osbourne and Bruce Springsteen's efforts to stay on the stage. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Emm Gryner. She is a Canadian musician and vocal coach. David Bowie named Emm as one of his two favourite Canadian acts. U2 frontman Bono named her song “Almighty Love” as one of six songs that he wished he had written. Gryner toured in David Bowie's band, singing and playing keyboards, and appears on the recordings Bowie at the Beeb and Glastonbury 2000. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is also the author of a book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.” Her new album is “Business & Pleasure” is a celebration of the Detroit radio scene and the music that shaped her childhood. From Motown, jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. Then, Gord Sinclair stops by. Best known as the bass player and one of the songwriters in The Tragically Hip, he is now a “reluctant solo artist” with a new album called In Continental Drift, available now wherever you buy fine music. Finally, we go into the vault to revisit my interview with the late, great rock photographer Mick Rock. He is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n' roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett's Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed's Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power, Queen's Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody') and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett's I Love Rock ‘n' Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I'm Only Dancing', ‘Jean Genie', ‘Space Oddity', and ‘Life On Mars'.

Andy Maughon may have retired from nearly five decades of fixing automobiles, but he's planning to stay more than active. Maughon, who for the past 27 years has owned and operated Andy's Muffler & Lube on Scenic Highway in Snellville, closed the business on January 31, selling the property where his shop was located. He said he may find a part-time job to “keep from going insane,” and that he is a hunter and fisher, and that he and his wife do enjoy horseback riding. When asked why he decided to retire now, Maughon said, “It's time. I'm tired and I can't get any help, so it's just time. I've got two (employees) working for me now and I used to have eight.” It's likely that the Monroe native, who now lives in the Oglethorpe County town of Arnoldsville, will also continue his hobby of racing. When he opened his shop in 1995, Maughon and his wife were featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post for their racing prowess. When the COVID pandemic kept families close to home, Loganville resident Michael A. Carson and his son Matthew decided to team up on a writing project that resulted in the publication of two books — one about the origins of Black History Month and the other about notable African-American jazz figures through history. Although the Carsons are no longer stuck inside, their collaboration continued with a new book, “Unsung African-American History Makers: Unknown Hidden Figures And Their Stories,” which was released on New Year's Day. Carson said that it was his son — who just celebrated his 13th birthday — who came up with the idea for their latest book. Although the father-son team has thus far proven quite prolific, Carson said they don't have a firm idea on their next book — or if there will be a next book. Their process is usually started when they hear of something that they both think might make a good book. As of now, they don't have anything currently in mind. Carson also said the best part of this whole process is the familial connection that he and his son have made. Students from South Gwinnett High School brought home a national championship in late January after winning the SuitUp Capgemini business competition. The competition took place in four cities — New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta — with the winning team from each region advancing to compete nationally. South Gwinnett represented the Atlanta market. The teams participating in the competition hosted by SuitUp (an educational nonprofit that seeks to increase career readiness for young people through business plan competitions) assumed the role of CEO for Capgemini, designing the prototype for a teen-friendly app focused on financial literacy. Each student was recognized with a certificate and a cash prize. A dozen families were displaced by a fire at a Norcross-area apartment complex on Tuesday. Gwinnett County firefighters were called to the Terra at Norcross Apartments complex, at 10:12 a.m., on a report that smoke was coming from a water heater closet. A plumber later told fire officials that he had noticed smoke in a water heater closet while he was working on pipes in the closet and used pull stations to make occupants aware of the fire. Crews arrived three minutes after they were called and found a two-story, multi-unit building on fire and deployed four hose lines to battle the flames. They also used two hydrants which were located in the apartment complex. The cause of the fire is still being investigated by fire department officials. One adult male did sustain a minor injury during the fire, but he was treated by medical crews and released at the scene. Twelve families were displaced by the fire and the complex's management is working with them to get them a place to stay while repairs are made. The Knight History Essay Contest, established by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in honor of George S. and Stella M. Knight, is designed to provide high school students an opportunity to probe the major events of American history. Bolstered by research conducted by the student-writer, essays — ranging in word county from 800 to 1,200 — must be original with topics based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. Students from the ninth through 12th grade submit their essays at the chapter and state levels to be considered for the national contest. Macayla Hutsler, a home-schooled 11th grade student from Gwinnett, is the recipient of the Lawrenceville-based Button Gwinnett Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution's essay contest award for 2022-23. Hutsler also won the state award, which was presented in late January at the Georgia Society, Sons of the American Revolution in Duluth. Hutsler's essay was entitled “Caesar Rodney: A Patriot Worth Remembering.” One of America's founding fathers, Rodney, who was born and died in Delaware, provided the tiebreaking vote that made the Declaration of Independence unanimous after Pennsylvania and South Carolina also voted for independence. I Love Rock 'n Roll is the first album by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and the second solo album by Joan Jett. Born as Joan Marie Larkin, Joan Jett got her start in the music industry as a teenager when her family moved to the Los Angeles area and divorced shortly thereafter. She was a founding member of the all-girl band The Runaways at the age of 16.Jett began her solo career in England in 1979, where she recorded songs with some of the members of the Sex Pistols. Later that year she returned to Los Angeles where she connected with a songwriter and producer named Kenny Laguna. Laguna would relocate Jett to Long Beach, New York, and assist her with both her first solo album and the formation of the Blackhearts. The group spent a year touring and building up a following in the New York Area before releasing I Love Rock 'n Roll. This album would be a mixture of original songs and covers, and the title track would spend 7 weeks at the top of the U.S. charts. The album was a commercial success, selling 10 million copies, and is Jett's most successful album to date. (I'm Gonna) Run AwayRob starts us off with the second track on the album, a deeper cut, and an original song written by Jett and Laguna. It has a punk feel, as does much of the album, and the lyrics reflect a break-up.Crimson and CloverThis cover of a song originally performed by Tommy James and the Shondells alternates between a slow and fast tempo, but maintains a hard rock edge throughout, unlike the more psychedelic aspects of the original. Jett was questioned about her choice not to change the pronouns in the lyrics from female to male, and she commented simply that the change in lyrics would make the song not rhyme.Summertime Blues Eddie Cochran co wrote and performed this song in 1958. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts speed this one up and give it a punk edge. It was not originally on the album, but appeared as the B-side to a single from Jett's prior solo album “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah).” It would appear on the album as a bonus track when released on CD. I Love Rock 'n RollThis title track is the big hit, and is also a cover originally performed by The Arrows in 1975. Jett first heard the song while touring with The Runaways, and she recorded an early version of the song with members of the Sex Pistols in 1979. It was the number 3 song on the U.S. charts for the year of 1982. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Street Life by Randy Crawford (from the motion picture “Sharkey's Machine”)This action film featured a stunt involving a plunge out of the Peachtree Plaza hotel, the tallest building in Atlanta at the time. STAFF PICKS:Jealous Lover by Rainbow Bruce starts off the staff picks with the lead-off track from a 4-song EP of the same name. Frontman Joe Lynn Turner and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song. Turner wrote the lyrics in about 5 minutes, inspired by an argument he had with Blackmore, which made him think about a fight he'd recently had with his girlfriend. “And it's hard to discover you're like any other jealous lover.”Young Turks by Rod Stewart Brian features the first US single from Stewart's eleventh album, Tonight I'm Yours. The song tells the story of two young lovers who run away from their parents to make their own way. Interestingly the phrase “young turks” never appears in the lyrics. The video included an early example of break dancing.Marie Marie by The BlastersWayne brings us a rockabilly song, or as The Blasters would describe it, “R&B in cowboy boots.” The song tells the story of a guy who is told to leave a family's daughter alone, and so he sings to her as he is leaving. I Love You by Climax Blues BandRob's staff pick is a soft rock hit. It tells the story of a guy who is rescued by the love of his wife. It is the second biggest hit by the Climax Blues Band after Couldn't Get It Right. It hit number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:September Fifteenth by Pat Metheny & Lyle MaysThis jazz instrumental was a feature of "Jazz Flavors" on radio station 94Q in Atlanta in December of 1981.

Ricky Byrd is a rock and roll guitar player, singer, songwriter, and music producer. For more than a decade, he was a member of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, where he contributed background vocals and music to many albums, including two platinum albums and one gold album. His most famous song might be “I Love Rock 'n Roll,” which was released in 1981. For many years, Ricky lived what might be the “typical” musician lifestyle. He drank, used drugs, and partied hard as he toured around the world alongside other famous musicians like Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. But Ricky made a decision to get sober over 30 years ago. Since then, he's created a lot of new music that focuses on recovery and hope. He often performs at benefit shows to raise money for drug and alcohol treatment facilities. He's become a certified recovery coach and drug and alcohol counselor. He frequently leads recovery music groups at treatment facilities around the United States. Some of the things he talks about are how his denial and desire to punish himself kept his substance abuse going, the one thing that inspired him to get help, and how he now helps other people who are struggling with addiction.

Joan Jett never gave a damn about her bad reputation. She's remained an iconic female vocalist that proved women would dominate the once male run music industry, especially in the rock and punk genres. Brought up in a strictly religious family in Pennsylvania, she found her way to LA where she changed her name, chopped off her hair, and adored black leather jackets where she was reborn. The Runaways was her first major success with her all-girl rock group at only 15 years old with massive hits like "Cherry Bomb". Seemingly this fame was not enough to be taken seriously by record companies because her debut solo album was rejected by 23 labels. Join me today as I take you though the volatile teen years of Joan in The Runaways with their abusive manager, how she struggled with the breakup of the band, to her overcoming mainstream rejection of her solo work and forever remained as the "Godmother of punk" with The Blackhearts. --- Arrow's lead singer with the story of "I Love Rock n Roll" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgfsercb2v8 --- Follow me for more music content, and how you can support OTM :) OTM Blog: https://onthemixpodcast.wordpress.com/blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/onthemixpodcast/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/OnTheMixPodcast Discord: https://discord.com/invite/gYFNT2RjtA Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/onthemixpodcast Donation/Tip: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/onthemixpodcast --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/on-the-mix/support

You will find a cleaned version on our Web site, at HappyMR.com. This is Episode 516, and if you were born on March 28th, 1982, then according to Birthday Tunes, I Love Rock ‘n Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts was the number one song on your birthday. Now, I was 10 years old when this song came out, and I can tell you, as a 10-year-old boy, Joan Jett symbolized sexuality and attitude. She sang about kicking ass, not putting up with anybody's bullshit, and not giving a- and here's a second curse word- fuck about what anyone thought about her sexual proclivities, and whether or not she was a switch hitter. Right from the start, this song, I Love Rock ‘n Roll, it drips with attitude. It has heavy drums that lead into kick-ass power chords that are in stereo with a “get off your ass and onto the dancefloor” hand clap. As the rhythm settles in, you get some badass riffs from the guitar, that introduce Joan Jett on the mic. Enjoy. [SONG PLAYS] [00:03:23] Jamin Brazil: So to you, birthday person, happy 30th birthday. To everybody else, let's make today a kickass day. Now, let's switch gears.

The Jesus and Mary Chain.Debutsinglen ”Upside Down” fra 1984 samt en række kaotiske koncerter og opsigtsvækkende interviews vækker jubel i den engelske musikpresse, der hurtigt kårer dem som ”the best band in the world”. De leverede varen på deres to første excellente album, som de siden har formået at variere på fornemmeste vis. This week we have a new show called I Love Rock n Rollen! Talk about the crazy cost of lumber, and what would we get Drake for his birthday.
Super Producer Cimcie jumps on this episode of The Bridge, as the show starts out with some thoughts on the blockbuster "Godzilla vs. Kong" that is racking up serious cash around the world. John, Liu Yan and Cimcie talk about the longevity of certain movie franchises and how people are in need of some escapism, and apparently the giant lizard and overgrown gorilla seems to fill the bill at this point. Then, the talk goes to the incredible popularity of karaoke in China and the US, so John drops the needle on "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic" that is one of the most requested songs Liu Yan performed as a bar singer in his former life. "Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin and " I Love Rock 'n' Roll" from Joan Jett, which would be John and Cimcie's choices for performing at KTV (Karaoke Television).

This week the Nerds welcome Dev-i-boy to the group. Dev-i-boy is also known as Brad, a Brisbane game developer, who we interviewed around a year ago. Check that one out too, it's a good one and it'll be in the show notes below.Professor and Dev-i-boy are gushing over Half Life: Alyx, despite a massive lack of Valve Index availability in Australia. Why, Valve, why?. HL:Alyx also doubles as an online lecture platform, a Cover your Cough training simulator and apparently, a generally good game.DJ wants to see the Dragons Lair movie. Ryan Reynolds has been cast in a live action remake of a classic animated Laserdisc game from 1983. Don Bluth is on board, so it should be something interesting to watch.Once again, the Nerds take on the topic of dinosaur chickens. Professor rants about the software design skills of Dennis Nedry and Dev-i-boy thinks there's no point in bringing back dinosaur chickens. But imagine the drumsticks on those chooks. As usual, we cover the games of the week and remember some famous figures who passed away this week.Half Life & Valve news- https://uploadvr.com/new-valve-vr-games/- https://store.steampowered.com/app/1271440/Next_Gen_HP_VR_Headset/- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKsSsEmfjoE&feature=emb_titleDragon’s Lair Movie remake-https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/ryan-reynolds-talks-tackle-live-action-film-80s-game-dragons-lair-1279270Recreating living dinosaurs now a reality-https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/247402?fbclid=IwAR2oerRwD5V1i3wiT_uBZglAOB5pbAazIK5GYFTxWFwlYbV4KrClpkFsRzkGames PlayedProfessor– Half-Life 2: Update - https://store.steampowered.com/app/290930/HalfLife_2_Update/Rating – 4/5DJ– Call of Duty : Warzone - https://www.callofduty.com/warzoneRating – 4/5Dev-i-Boy- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_The_Wind_WakerRating – 4/5- Colin McRae Rally 2005 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_McRae_Rally_2005Rating – 5/5Other topics discussedA Nerds Special - An Interview with An Aspie Life developer : Bradley Hennessey - https://thatsnotcanon.com/topshelfnerdspodcast/episode87Valve to pay AU$3 million fine for misleading Australian gamers- https://www.cnet.com/news/valve-to-pay-3-million-fine-for-misleading-australian-gamers/F-Stop or 'Directed Design Experiments'- https://vcc.wiki/wiki/F-StopMath Teacher’s class in Virtual Reality- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3g9jrqjOZsOculus Headset- https://www.oculus.com/?locale=en_USOculus Rift Store- https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/?locale=en_USSullivan Bluth Studios (Irish-American animation studio established in 1979 by animator Don Bluth.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sullivan_Bluth_StudiosDetective Pikachu (2019 urban fantasymystery film directed by Rob Letterman.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detective_Pikachu_(film)Free Guy (upcoming 2020 American science fiction action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy, a story by Matt Lieberman, and a screenplay by Lieberman and Zak Penn.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_GuyCastlevania (an action-adventure gothic horrorvideo game series about vampire hunters created and developed by Konami.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CastlevaniaBlack Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018 interactive film in the science fiction anthology series Black Mirror.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mirror:_BandersnatchGreen Lantern (2011 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Lantern_(film)R.I.P.D. While in the band, he wrote the song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” which the band released in 1975. The song would later become a chart topper for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts in 1982. In an interview with Songfacts, Merrill said he wrote the song as "a knee-jerk response to the Rolling Stones' 'It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)'." This version was first released as a B-side, but was soon re-recorded and flipped to A-side status on a subsequent pressing of the record. Arrows performed the song in 1975 on the Muriel Young-produced show 45, after which Young offered Arrows a weekly UK television series, Arrows, which was broadcast on ITV starting in March 1976. Joan Jett saw the Arrows perform "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" on their weekly UK television series Arrows while she was touring England with the Runaways in 1976. The game begins moments after the end of the original MDK. MDK2 received generally positive reviews across all systems, with critics praising the graphics, variety of gameplay styles, level design, boss fights, the game's sense of humor, and its fidelity to the original MDK. The most commonly criticized aspects of the game were the difficulty level, which was felt to be too high, and the platforming sections, which many critics found frustrating and too exacting.Remembrances30 March 1962 - Philip Showalter Hench - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Showalter_HenchAmerican physician. Hench, along with his Mayo Clinic co-worker Edward Calvin Kendall and Swiss chemist Tadeus Reichstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950 for the discovery of the hormone cortisone, and its application for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The Nobel Committee bestowed the award for the trio's "discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects." His speech at the banquet during the award ceremony acknowledged the connections between the study of medicine and chemistry, saying of his co-winners "Perhaps the ratio of one physician to two chemists is symbolic, since medicine is so firmly linked to chemistry by a double bond." In addition to the Nobel Prize, Hench received many other awards and honors throughout his career. He also had a lifelong interest in the history and discovery of yellow fever. He died from pneumonia at the age of 69 in Ocho Rios.30 March 2004 – Michael King - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_KingNew Zealand popular historian, author, and biographer. He wrote or edited over 30 books on New Zealand topics, including the best-sellingPenguin History of New Zealand, which was the most popular New Zealand book of 2004. King was well known for his knowledge of Māori culture and history. New Zealand Listener, one of New Zealand's most popular weekly magazines, dubbed King "the people's historian" for his efforts to write about and for the local populace. He died from a traffic collision at the age of 58 in near Maramarua,Waikato.30 March 2008 - Dith Pran - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dith_PranCambodian photojournalist, he was a refugee and survivor of the Cambodian genocide and the subject of the film The Killing Fields. In 1975, Dith and The New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg stayed behind in Cambodia to cover the fall of the capital Phnom Penh to the Communist Khmer Rouge. Schanberg and other foreign reporters were allowed to leave the country, but Pran was not. Due to persecution of intellectuals during the genocide, he hid the fact that he was educated or that he knew Americans, and he pretended that he had been a taxi driver. When Cambodians were forced to work in labour camps, Dith had to endure four years of starvation and torture before Vietnam overthrew the Khmer Rouge in December 1978. He coined the phrase "killing fields" to refer to the clusters of corpses and skeletal remains of victims he encountered during his 40-mile (60 km) escape. He gained worldwide recognition after the 1984 release of the film The Killing Fields about his experiences under the Khmer Rouge. He was portrayed in the film by first-time actor Haing S. Ngor (1940–1996), who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 65 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.Famous Birthdays30 March 1820 – Anna Sewell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_SewellEnglish novelist. She is well known as the author of the 1877 novel Black Beauty, which is now considered one of the top ten bestselling novels for children ever written, although it was intended at the time for an adult audience. During this time her health was declining; she was often so weak that she was confined to her bed. Writing was a challenge. She dictated the text to her mother and from 1876 began to write on slips of paper which her mother then transcribed. The book is the first English novel to be written from the perspective of a non-human animal, in this case a horse. Although it is now considered a children's classic, Sewell originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. She said, "a special aim was to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses". In many respects the book can be read as a guide to horse husbandry, stable management and humane training practices for colts. It is considered to have had an effect on reducing cruelty to horses; for example, the use of bearing reins, which are particularly painful for a horse, was one of the practices highlighted in the novel, and in the years after the book's release the reins became less popular and fell out of favour. She was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.30 March 1853 – Vincent Van Gogh - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_GoghVincent Willem van Gogh, Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings. On 30th March 2020, his painting titled The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring, was stolen from the Singer Laren museum in Laren, North Holland. It was stolen in an overnight smash-and-grab raid on a museum that was closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. He was born in Zundert.30 March 1930 - John Astin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_AstinAmerican actor who has appeared in numerous films and television series, as well as a television director and voice artist. He is best known for starring as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, reprising the role in the television film Halloween with the New Addams Family and the animated series The Addams Family. His second wife was actress Patty Duke and he is the adoptive father of Duke's son, actor Sean Astin. Astin is director of the Theater Arts and Studies Department and Homewood Professor of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater, which offers an undergraduate minor program. He was born in Baltimore,Maryland.Events of Interest29 March 1979 – Another Brick in the Wall, Part II hits number one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_1980"Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" was released as a single, Pink Floyd's first in the UK since "Point Me at the Sky". It was Pink Floyd's only number-one hit in the United Kingdom, the United States, West Germany and several other countries. The single sold over 4 million copies worldwide. "Part 2" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Rock Duo or Group. The lyrics attracted controversy. The Inner London Education Authority described the song as "scandalous", and according to Renshaw, prime minister Margaret Thatcher "hated it". Renshaw said: "There was a political knee-jerk reaction to a song that had nothing to do with the education system. It was [Waters'] reflections on his life and how his schooling was part of that." The single, as well as the album The Wall, were banned in South Africa in 1980 after it was adopted by supporters of a nationwide school boycott protesting racial inequities in education under apartheid.30 March 1814 - Napoleon's forces defeated in Paris- https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/allies-capture-paris- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Paris_(1814)European forces allied against Napoleonic France march triumphantly into Paris, formally ending a decade of French domination on the Continent. Filmed for $70 million, The Matrix was a stylish, innovative and visually spectacular take on a familiar premise–that humans are unknowing inhabitants of a world controlled by machines–central to films such as Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Matrix starred Keanu Reeves as a computer hacker who learns that human-like computers have created a fake world, the Matrix, to enslave the remaining humans while keeping them in the dark about their dire fate. Packed with slow-motion camera tricks and references from a myriad of sources–including comic books, the Bible, Lewis Carroll, Eastern philosophy and film noir—The Matrix also stunned viewers with its Hong Kong-style fight scenes, choreographed by the martial-arts master Yuen Wo Ping and performed with the help of invisible wires allowing the characters to fly through the air. Greeted with enthusiasm by computer-gaming fanatics and mainstream audiences alike, The Matrix earned a staggering $470 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards, for Best Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.Follow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

“Where do I start?” (Looking for the newsletter? Sign up here.) That’s the first question I hear from people when they’ve decided to record their life story. And it’s no wonder, considering that the raw material for a life story book consists of a lifetime of memories—all those people and places and experiences we want to share with our family and friends. How do we wrastle it all onto the paper? We don’t. Just because something happened doesn’t mean we should write about it. This may seem like a contradiction to what we talked about in the last episode. That's when we talked about gathering all the random fragments of memory. But not all of those will lead to a story, or be developed into a story in their own right. Instead, think of your memories as a smorgasbord, a buffet of tasty dishes. You don’t expect to eat everything. Instead, you pick and choose. “But that still doesn’t answer my question. Where do I start?” Right. Sorry. I was distracted by the word “buffet.” It made me think of my high school father-daughter dance, going through the buffet line with my friends Lori and Tina and their dads. The strange sight of grown men dancing to Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock n’ Roll.” The weird vending machine in the bathroom that shot out a cloud of perfume for 75 cents. We angled ourselves to get maximum coverage, then spent the rest of the evening trying to wash it off. This was St. Louis, 1982. If I were writing my life story, maybe that mini-anecdote would make it onto the page, maybe not. But I shared it with you as an example of how “Where do I start?” isn’t the question we should be asking. If you’re thinking about writing your life story, I promise, you’ve already started the pleasurable part—recalling your memories. You’ve likely thought of experiences or events you want to include, important people, places, traditions, reflections. Maybe you’ve even jotted down some of them. But even if you haven’t picked up a pen or a laptop yet, the real question isn’t “Where do I start?” but “What do I do next?” Gather and Sort There’s this cool thing in classical rhetoric called inventio, and it’s all about finding what you want to include in a piece of writing (or, that speech you’re giving over at the Forum). We life story writers have it much easier; all our material is right there in our head. Still, we can learn something from Aristotle and his gang. One of the tools they used during the inventio phase was the topoi. Otherwise known as commonplaces, topoi are the questions rhetors asked themselves to expand their thinking about something and prompt new insights. Topoi, which translates roughly to “places,” is a metaphor. Picture an empty cargo ship traveling along the coastline, stopping at ports to take on cargo. The ports are the topoi; the cargo is the stuff the rhetor gathers to use in a speech or essay. It’s a helpful concept for life story writing, one that we can employ both metaphorically and literally. In my newsletter—and by the way, if you haven’t signed up for it, but you’d like occasional emails with tips on how to write your life story, or the life story of a loved one, you can do that at thestoryscribe.com. You’ll see a email newsletter signup form. Or look at the show notes for this episode to find a link. For now, I’m sending something every three to four weeks, so you shouldn’t feel overwhelmed. I respect your time and I don’t want to flood your inbox. Today’s writing activity In the last newsletter, I suggested you draw a simple timeline and populate it with the events of your life. Today, I’m going to ask you to create an additional layer, the placeline. This can be part of your timeline or a separate line altogether. Or, if you don’t have a good memory for dates, scrap the timeline and use this instead. You’ll still have a rough chronology for your life but without the burden of trying to remember exact years. Now, mark the line with the major locations of your life (your literal topoi).

Reaganomics is a popular term used to refer to the economic policies of Ronald Reagan 50. During the campaign of 1980, Ronald Reagan announced a recipe to fix the nation's economic mess. He claimed an undue tax burden, excessive government regulation, and massive social spending programs hampered growth. 51. Reagan's 1981 Program for Economic Recovery had four major policy objectives: (1) reduce the growth of government spending, (2) reduce the marginal tax rates on income from both labor and capital, (3) reduce regulation, and (4) reduce inflation by controlling the growth of the money supply. The economic theory behind the plan was called Supply-Side, or Trickle-Down economics, or voodoo economics by political opponents. 52. Did It Work? 53. President Reagan delivered on each of his four major policy objectives., although not to the extent that he and his supporters had hoped. 54. Government spending wasn't lowered, just shifted from domestic programs to defense. The result? The federal debt almost tripled, from $997 billion in 1981 to $2.857 trillion in 1989. 55. Reagan cut tax rates enough to stimulate consumer demand. By Reagan's last year in office, the top income tax rate was 28 percent for single people making $18,550 or more. Anyone making less paid no taxes at all. That was much less than the 1980 top tax rate of 70 percent for individuals earning $108,000 or more. Reagan offset these tax cuts with tax increases elsewhere. He raised Social Security payroll taxes and some excise taxes. Reagan cut the corporate tax rate from 46 percent to 40 percent. 56. Reagan deregulated: Domestic oil and gas, cable TV, long-distance telephone service, interstate bus service, and ocean shipping. He eased bank regulations, but that helped create the Savings and Loan Crisis in 1989. Reagan increased, not decreased, import barriers. He did little to reduce other regulations affecting health, safety, and the environment. Carter had reduced regulations at a faster pace. 57. Tame Inflation. Reagan was fortunate Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker was already in place. Volcker vigorously attacked the double-digit inflation of the 1970s. 58. Legacy 59. Reagan’s indifference to urban problems was legendary. For example, early in his presidency, at a White House reception, Reagan greeted the only black member of his Cabinet, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Samuel Pierce, saying: “How are you, Mr. Mayor? I’m glad to meet you. How are things in your city?” He had failed to recognize his own HUD Secretary. 60. And his dislike for public school education is still with us. 61. MAY 06, 2013 LANCE T. IZUMI: SACRAMENTO, CA – While Ronald Reagan’s foreign policy changed the face of the world, it shouldn’t be forgotten that his leadership also dramatically changed the face of issues at home. Top among those was education. In 1983, the Reagan administration released the groundbreaking report A Nation at Risk. Using a wealth of statistical data, the report demonstrated in detail the failings of America’s education system and the impact of those failings on the country’s children. The report recommended greater emphasis on basic subjects such as math and English, more rigorous and measurable standards, higher expectations for student performance and conduct, lengthening the school year, and improving teacher quality through, for example, increasing standards for teacher training programs. It’s no coincidence that the report’s recommendations form the basis for much of today’s agenda for education reform. 62. According to Dick Carpenter, professor of education leadership at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, in the two years after the release of “A Nation at Risk”, Reagan delivered more than 50 education-related speeches. Prof. Carpenter found, In speech after speech, Reagan articulated his educational beliefs and ideas, including parental responsibility in education; school choice, including tax credits and vouchers; rigorous academic content focused on basics such as reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and government; religious freedom in schools; high standards of conduct and discipline; character education; and a federal responsibility in helping the disadvantaged. 63. Gary K. Clabaugh The Cutting Edge 259: Most presupposed that the charges made by Mr. Reagan’s handpicked panel were true. Oddly, throughout this entire clamor parents’ confidence in the schools their children attended remained remarkably high.9Meanwhile Mr. Reagan was quietly halving federal aid to education. 64. That sums up Mr. Reagan’s educational legacy. As governor and president he demagogically fanned discontent with public education, then made political hay of it. As governor and president he bashed educators and slashed education spending while professing to value it. And as governor and president, he left the nation’s educators dispirited and demoralized. 65. Open Comments 66. Palmyra Delran is inciting espionage. “Come Spy With Me is an invitation to come for the ride and listen to the record with me,” says the trash-pop maven of her new album on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, out November 9. “Plus, spying is all the rage these days. I know there’s a movie from 1967 with the same title as my album, but I haven’t seen it.” Spy builds on Palmyra’s growing notoriety within the Garage Rock universe, which has seen many of her tracks named “Coolest Song In The World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage. One of them, “Baby Should Have Known Better,” was even SiriusXM listeners’ choice for “Coolest Song Of The Year” in 2008. Another fan favorite, “You’re My Brian Jones,” was a highlight of her last full-length effort, 2013’s You Are What You Absorb. The Doppel Gang consists of bassist Michael Lynch (“a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who’s been in tons of cool bands and released a few records of his own”), drummer Mark Brotter (“he’s played with Hem, Evie Sands, Alan Merrill who wrote “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” and Bowery Boys”) and Richard Dev Greene (“true rock ’n’ roll to the core, he was in Pale Face Of Youth who re- formed as Pale Moon Gang, and he’s doing gigs with the re-formed Plimsouls”).
We all have our favorite rock cover songs by artists. Some covers are great, some covers should never be attempted, and in some cases the original rock song should never be approached for a cover recording in the first place. D&D discuss some of our favorite and not so favorite covers. Kenny Laguna (Producer/Songwriter) played or sang on 50 Billboard Top 40 hits by 1972. He's worked with Tony Orlando, The Ohio Players, Tommy James and more. Kenny is most proud to be the songwriter behind Dick Clarks' American Bandstand. Laguna met, and began working with, Joan Jett, shortly after the break-up of The Runaways in 1979. Working with Cordell and others, he won her a solo record deal and co-produced her solo albums including Bad Reputation (1980), and I Love Rock 'n' Roll (1981). He established Blackheart Records with Jett in the early 1980s. Journalist Jonathan Gross described Laguna as "Jett's surrogate father/brother/manager/mentor/producer. In 1982 he also produced English band Bow Wow Wow's hit version of "I Want Candy". He has continued to work with Joan Jett, as performer, producer and manager, on her later albums and tours, and acted as Executive Producer on the 2010 film The Runaways, about Jett's earlier band. On April 18, 2015, Kenny Laguna, along with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mick Rock, legendary photographer, "The Man Who Shot the Seventies," drops by the Richard Crouse Show. His bio: Legendary rock photographer Mick Rock is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies’, for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n’ roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett’s Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed’s Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges’ Raw Power, Queen’s Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’, ‘Jean Genie’, ‘Space Oddity’, and ‘Life On Mars’. A classic quote from Mick in the London Times, who dubbed him ‘the music world’s top snapper’: “I’ve never felt like a voyeur, although I’ve certainly done plenty of looking! I work from the inside out. Like a cook I gather all the ingredients and keep mixing and stirring and tasting until the kind of effluvia starts to rise, then I’m off to the races. It’s an addictive kind of a feeling that I need a regular shot of otherwise I don’t feel right…” See an exhibition of his work at the LISS GALLERY in Toronto, 112 Cumberland St - 416-787-9872.

On this date in 1820, Maine was admitted to the Union. Here are some things you may not have known about the 23rd state. The first inhabitants of what would become Maine was a loose confederacy of Algonquin-speaking people, called the Wabanaki. The first European contact came about 800 years ago when Norwegians arrived on the coast. The Norwegians didn’t settle in the area, but returned over the next few centuries to trade and collect timber. A 10th-century Norwegian coin was discovered during 1954 archeological dig in the state. The first European settlers came in 1604. In 1652, what is now Maine was made part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It remained part of Massachusetts, separated by New Hampshire, until it was made a state in 1820. The original capital of Maine was Portland, but it was moved to the more centrally located Augusta in 1832. Maine has many geographic and demographic oddities. It’s the only state to border only one other state. It’s the easternmost state. It’s the state that is located closest to Africa. It’s the site of the only sovereignty dispute over land between the United States and Canada. It’s the least densely populated state east of the Mississippi River. 83 percent of the state is covered by forest, the highest percentage in the country. It has the highest percentage of non-Hispanic whites of any state at 94.4 percent. It also has the highest percentage of French Americans, and the highest percentage of French speakers in the U.S. Today’s question: What was the name of the fictional Maine town in which the TV show “Murder, She Wrote” was set? Today is International Day Against Police Brutality; World Consumer Rights Day; National Day in Hungary; and Constitution Day in Belarus. It’s unofficially National Peanut Lovers Day. It’s the birthday of former U.S. President Andrew Jackson, who was born in 1767; musician Phil Lesh, who is 77; and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is 84. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1982, the top song in the U.S. was “I Love Rock ’n Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The No. 1 movie was “Richard Prior: Live on the Sunset Strip,” while the novel “North and South” by John Jakes topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. I live with a super social twelve-year-old. Our home is conveniently located within biking and walking distance to a vast majority of her friends. Therefore, I interact with dozens, seemingly hundreds, of middle-schoolers on the reg. That means “regularly.” Not only do I hear, and apparently absorb (…totes…) their language, but I also hear, and often abhor, their music. At times, I’m tempted to let something much like this slip from my mouth, “Music is horrible today.” Guess what, though? It’s not true. What I’d really be saying is, “When I was a kid…our shitty pop music was less shitty than this generation’s shitty pop music.” But see, shitty pop music is shitty pop music is shitty pop music. And also, all art is relative, and personal, and wrought with nostalgic, emotional overlay. I realized this as Jen played, “Hit the Quan” for me. If you stream the podcast just below this post, you can hear both the song and the insights. For those of you who’ll just read, and to assure myself that, indeed, every decade’s shitty pop…let’s call it Poop Music, is merely soon-to-be-dated Poop, I did some research. I use the term “research” quite loosely. What I really did was look at the “List of Billboard Top 100 chart achievements by decade” on Wikipedia, within which I found the top songs of each decade back to 1958. That’s right, 1958. People, Wikipedia is absolutely wonderful for many things. Not serious academic research, and not as a solitary source. Don’t dismiss it out of hand just because it’s crowd-sourced. While it only takes one dick to ruin something, the crowd generally trumps the dick. However, also realize that the community created a 1958 – 1969 “decade” because, I dunno, the dick won there. So, for any of you who’ve claimed, in your best crotchety old-man/old-woman demeanor, “Music ain’t like it used to be,” feast your eyes on these lists. (And hell, link through to the videos to feast your ears as well!) Keep in mind, there are absolute gems of pop perfection in each decade…and there are heaping mounds of steaming shit as well. All the way back to the decade that began in, uh…1958. I won’t try to convince you which songs here are genius, which are formulaic, which are immediately forgetful, unforgettable, and which are vomit-worthy. I only ask you to keep track of your reactions as you travel back…and be completely honest with yourself. Because a turd by any other name would smell as putrid. On this episode of the podcast, we continue learning about Spinoza, this time focusing on his concept of God. We begin by asking ourselves whether or not Stephen’s English bulldog Charlie is part of God, and analyzing the implications of our answer. Next, we discuss the concept of “substance” and what Spinoza thought the only one true substance was (hint: it’s not water). Finally, we consider how Spinoza’s concept of God/Nature impacts his thoughts on free will and why he would say Stephen has no choice but to imitate a drunk person singing “I Love Rock and Roll” every time he drives past that certain billboard. In this episode, I try to say ''um" less. I start out with some Beatles news. First was the tenth anniversary of the "Let It Be...Naked" album, which was Paul McCartney's attempt to strip Phil Spector off the record. Phil Spector is in jail for murder. The Beatles weren't getting along, even though George looks ecstatic on the cover of "Let It Be". I grew up hearing the strings on "The Long and Winding Road", but Paul hated it. I don't know why, but it was probably because Macca is a control freak. The second anniversary was that of the last George Harrison album, "Brainwashed", which was released after his death. It's a great album. Jeff Lynne of ELO and the Traveling Wilburys and George's son, Dhani, finished the album. I talk about the movie "Easy Rider", the classic motorcycles and hippies saga. I saw this movie as a freshman in college. I wrote a paper about the music in the movie, but I bet it was tripe, since I didn't have the internet and was pretty naive musically. The movie starts out with a drug deal. This reminds me of the cartels outside my cinder block shack. The cartel member is dressed nice. They sell the coke to Phil Spector at the airport before he takes off to London to screw up "Let It Be". I talk about how small gas tanks are on chopper motorcycles, so they had to stop a lot on their way to New Orleans. There is some heavy-handed symbolism when they change a motorcycle tire in front of a blacksmith shoeing a horse. They meet a hitchhiker who takes them to a scary commune with screaming kids and goats. Worst of all are the mimes, who speak when they aren't supposed to. They try to grow corn. Free love ain't all that great. Lucy agrees. I talk about how destructive hippies are, giving examples of Woodstock and Altamont, as well as the parking lot after the Grateful Dead hit Seattle. I finally remember the name of Dennis Hopper's character. There's some foreshadowing when they get to New Orleans. They go to a whorehouse and see Toni Basil of "Mickey" fame. The movie ends tragically. The movie holds up well, but the camera work has aged. The music is good - Steppenwolf, Byrds, etc. "Don't Bogart That Joint", my friend. I talk about the book "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck, which takes place in Monterrey, California. It's a great setting for a novel. I love Steinbeck. Doc is a marine biologist who makes money selling octopi and stuff like that he collects in the tidal flats. Vagabonds live in the Palace Flophouse, led by Mack. The book has a sense of whimsy. Steinbeck has a gift for illustrating the common man without pretension. There is a sequel called "Sweet Thursday", and it's a great book, too. It was written years later when Steinbeck was more experienced. The movie of "Cannery Row" is a hybrid of those two books. The guy who plays Mack was the shooter in "The Jerk". He hates these cans! The movie is narrated by John Huston and stars Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. I do a poor imitation of Navin Johnson. I can't say the actor's name very well. I observe the passing of the great Lou Reed. I love the "Berlin" album. Most people just know him from the song about the transvestites. I do some housekeeping regarding the first episode. The intro song is my song, "Chemical Marriage" off the Saturn Lander eponymous album. "I Love Rock and Roll" was by the Arrows. Kim Fowley was a svengali, not a savant. Kim Fowly produced three songs by Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids on the American Graffiti soundtrack, which I love. Fowley wrote for Helen Reddy and others. The Gettysburg Address has less than half the words of the Barenaked Ladies song I talked about. The sitcom I talked about with Bronson Pinchot was "Perfect Strangers". They found the bones of Coneheads in France, just like they said on SNL years ago. I quote Jack London. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. You can find the podcast archives there. In this inaugural episode, I awkwardly introduce myself and what I'm trying to do. Podcasts should be specialized, but I want to talk about a variety of subjects, including but not limited to self-publishing. I grew up in a one stoplight town in Oklahoma. My friends and I got into Metallica in 1986 and willed ourselves into a band. I decided I wanted to be a professional musician, but my mom said I needed a degree. I got one in Chemistry, then moved to Seattle to play grunge. I had a band called Saturn Lander. I moved to Texas and became a teacher, but now I'm a writer. My books are music themed, and the titles are "Black Dog", "Band On The Run", and "Running On Empty". They are on Amazon. I talk about my 6'x9' cinder block shack in the desert of Northern Mexico/Southern Texas. I have a Scottie dog named Lucy, a deep freeze full of popsicles, and an espresso machine. I review the "Runaways" movie. Joan Jett said most of the movie didn't really happen, but the movie makers used 'creative license'. Joan never wore leather pants in real life. She wore jeans. Joan didn't teach her bandmate how to masturbate. Michael Shannon was excellent as the manager, Kim Fowley, who is nuts. He wrote songs for KISS and Alice Cooper. I mention the movie "Bug", directed by William Friedkin. The Runaways had lots of scenes that created an overall vibe, but they were shallow. Dakota Fanning was good, and she pantomimed to Bowie's "Lady Grinning Soul", which Cherie Currie really did in high school. Kristen Stewart was one dimensional, but she looked like Joan Jett. I break the news of her next role. Cherie Currie is a chainsaw carver with my friend Jesse in Arcata, California. I gave the movie one thumb up out of two. The song "I Love Rock and Roll" was a cover song that Joan Jett didn't write. I play a snippet of the original. I introduce a band who followed me on Twitter called 'The Dirty Feel'. Their new album is being released posthumously because the lead singer passed away from a blood disease. I listened to the audiobook of "The Eyes of the Dragon" by Stephen King. It was narrated by Bronson Pinchot. I do a poor imitation of his catch phrase. The book is the prequel to "The Dark Tower" series. It had two princes and an evil wizard named Flagg who shows up in other King books. It was a good story, not horror, medium length. King wrote it for his thirteen year old daughter. The book is kind of cliche, but it is good. The narrator talks to the reader sometimes, which is a little annoying. Flagg has an incredibly deep voice, and the delivery sometimes doesn't match the dialogue tag. He sounds like the snake in the Jungle Book cartoon. I rate the book four stars. Stephen King does have a character dig his fingernails into his palm until blood is drawn, which I think is impossible. He doesn't mention Xavier Cugat, though, like he usually does. The book is Tolkien-lite. I talk about some music news. Gordon Lightfoot is 75. I sing one of his songs. Canadians are very literate people. The Barenaked Ladies song "Next Week" has 592 words. Sorry for mentioning the horrible song. Alanis Morissette has a Broadway musical coming out based on "Jagged Little Pill", but I wouldn't pick up the tickets if I won them on the radio. Her voice cracks too much. Jimmy Page is remastering the original Led Zeppelin albums, and Lucy is excited about that, as am I. I hope the first episode wasn't too awkward, but it probably was. Please keep listening, and I might get better. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. You can find the podcast archives there. Find my books on Amazon by searching my name, Matt Syverson.
