Along the way, we unpack the incredible story behind Wired, the infamous John Belushi biopic that earned the wrath of Belushi's friends, a literal curse from Dan Aykroyd, and years of career fallout for a young actor who was mostly just happy to no longer be waiting tables. From there, we dive into the television work that ultimately made Chiklis a star, including The Commish and his groundbreaking Emmy-winning performance as Vic Mackey on The Shield. Is Michael Chiklis an underrated television powerhouse trapped inside an underwhelming movie résumé, or does the uneven filmography tell us something bigger about his limitations as a performer? Colin Hanks likes John Candy. That much is clear from his Primetime Emmy-nominated documentary “John Candy: I Like Me.” But what drew him to the project was the idea that there had to be something more to the story than the saintly portrait drawn by so many who knew and loved this jovial Canadian comedian, television and movie star who died at age 43, over 30 years ago now. Colin joins Ken on the pod to talk about how, once he got to know Candy's wife, Rose, and two children, Jennifer and Chris, a fuller portrait of Candy started to emerge. Candy was marked for life by the tragic death of his father, who died at age 35 on Candy's 5th birthday. In later years, Candy suffered from panic attacks and anxiety. In addition to the family, Colin interviews the pantheon of Second City and Hollywood stars who achieved some of their best work collaborating on screen with Candy, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Steve Martin, and (of course) Tom Hanks. It turns out there was more to know about John Candy than we all suspected. Released on December 6, 1985, Spies Like Us is a Cold War buddy comedy directed by John Landis, the filmmaker behind Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London and Trading Places. Chevy Chase plays Emmett Fitz-Hume, a charming but lazy State Department employee who relies more on confidence and family connections than actual ability. Dan Aykroyd plays Austin Millbarge, an intelligent but overlooked Pentagon technician who dreams of becoming a field agent. After both men cheat during a government examination, they are unexpectedly promoted, rushed through a completely ridiculous training program and sent on a secret overseas mission. Fitz-Hume and Millbarge believe they've finally become real spies. What they don't know is that they are expendable decoys, selected to draw enemy attention away from a more capable team. The assignment sends them through Pakistan and into Soviet territory, where a mission they barely understand places a nuclear missile—and possibly the entire world—in their hands. It's part spy spoof, part buddy comedy and part satire of Cold War paranoia. To this day - twenty-two years later - you can still walk into a room anywhere in the civilized world and shout “Who ya gonna call?” and get an emphatic hollaback of “GHOSTBUSTERS!” Is there more that needs to be said? Yes, there is. About three hours worth if you're Paul, Javi, and the preternatural Producer Brad! For a franchise that has been rehashed, rebooted, re-animated, and spun-off so many times, the original still holds the power to provoke laughter, surprise, wonder, and, occasionally, a low grumble of “dude, that Venkman's kind of a lech." It was the eighties, and if you were an alum of SNL, times were good, especially for Dan Aykroyd, who, along with Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman turned his longtime obsession with the the paranormal into a humongously budgeted comedic spectacle on the scale of the epic blockbusters of Lucas and Spielberg.
