What happens when screen legends Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche play obscenely wealthy commodities brokers who wager on an insidious, impromptu nature-vs.-nurture experiment that subjects an unwitting Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd to radical reversals of fortune? You get an '80s screwball comedy update of The Prince and the Pauper that also showcases the great Jamie Lee Curtis and Denholm Elliott, along with a host of amusing cameos by the likes of Al Franken, Bo Diddley, and Giancarlo Esposito, all set to an Elmer Bernstein score built on the shoulders of Mozart. And it's a Christmas movie! (Kind of.) Join Javi, Paul and - inscrutably - Producer Brad as they learn more than they ever wanted to about pork belly and concentrated frozen orange juice futures trading, navigate the film's alarmingly casual racism and homophobia (not to mention a painful bit involving a gorilla), and behold the biggest smoked salmon ever to grace the silver screen. In this edition of Off the Record Rastislav Miklos and Stewart Rathje take a look at films we watched recently. Unfortunately Ken was not able to make it this time.Rasto enlightens us with his TV series that ran from 2016 to 2021. Rasto believes that four seasons is the perfect amount of time before a series goes stale. Billy Bob Thornton plays a disgraced lawyer, and ambulance chaser mixed with his keen cleverness.Stewart then gives his take on the 1988 film The Couch Trip, featuring an escaped mental patient and convict played by Dan Aykroyd. This Crimedy didn't deserve the ratings it did, and is full of laughs. Dan Aykroyds sidekick is played by Walter Matthau.Rasto continues on the True Crime kick with the TV series Bosch from 2014 to 2021 but only managed to watch 2 seasons. The series continues to confuse Rasto on how they came up with the name of the show. He believes it was based on the famous painter from the 16th century, Hieronymus Bosch. And finally Stewart's lesser pick The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee from 2020 is parody of a film that pokes fun at retired actors and the high jinx they can get into. Featuring Paul Hogan as the main character, but graced with many cameo appearances from other actors such as Chevy Chase and John Cleese.Share this post with all your friends! The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Another season of The Early Years of SNL comes to a close, which can only mean one thing… Buck is Back! Buck Henry returns for his 8th time hosting and this time he gets a proper season finale musical guest with the one and only Bette Midler.Saturday Night Live brings its highest-rated season yet to a close and while things are mostly upbeat, there is still a sense that this is somewhat of a goodbye. In what will end up being the final episode for Dan Aykroyd (unknowingly) and John Belushi (pretty evident) as cast members we see the final appearance of The Samurai, The Olympia Café closes its doors, and Richard Nixon makes one last appearance in the original era. On a brighter note, we get one of the most well-known cold opens of the era courtesy of Mr. Bill and an appearance by master impressionist Michael O'Donoghue! We're once again joined by Jon Schneider of The Saturday Night Network to reminisce about the joys of Buck hosting, argue about Garrett giving his best performance of all time, lament the final episode of two of the show's original stars, and teach Brad a thing or two about... well, nothing to do with SNL whatsoever. On Talking Tacos episode 201 the boys drink with SNL legends like Colin Quinn and Dan Aykroyd. For real. We also talk about being barefoot and puking in public (mutually exclusive in this context!), we debate the prime ripeness of bananas, the expectations of loaning money, and a gush over a new hot sauce from Coney Island saucery.
'Spirits with Spirits' The King's Head Pub - Episode 207Last month we had the honour to bring our 'Spirits with Spirits' series to the infamous King's Head Pub located at 120 King St., Winnipeg, MB. Joined by Ashley and Kelly from The Winnipeg Paranormal Group, we had an amazing crowd for about 30 people come out and join us! We discussed the history of the building at 120 King St. now known as King's Head Pub since the late 1980s, however the bulding itself has been around since 1896! There has been one known death in the building, a homeless person by the name of Garry. There have been reports of a 'Basement' ghost and a ghost on the 3rd floor.......where we were holding the event! However, nothing appeared to have been recorded or seen/felt that night. However, Jas did hear a suspicious sound on the stage behind her and someone in the audience later said around that same time, they saw the curtain move......curious ghost? If you are in the Winnipeg area - make sure you come out for the next 'Spirits with Spirits' as The King's Head Pub has invited us back! I guess we behaved pretty well then! lol. Next event is June 25, 2025 - 7 to 9 PM. The Theme is Haunted Summer Vacations....Also check out The Superstitious Times – Explore the Lore for our interview about our 'Spirits with Spirits' event! The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 19 – Jeff from BellevilleWelcome back, Hip faithful. This week on the Countdown, I'm joined by one of our most beloved Sunday Evening Jam regulars — the witty, wise, and wonderfully loquacious Jeff from Belleville. You know him. You love him. And if you've ever caught a live stream where he was in the comments, you've probably laughed out loud. But today? Today, we go deeper.Jeff takes us back to his teenage years, up in a century-old Belleville coach house where Road Apples first took hold and never let go. From bootleg tapes and roadside attractions to mosh pits, surprise shows, and backstage encounters — Jeff's Hipstory spans 31 shows and countless life moments tied to the soundtrack of this band.Along the way, we talk memory, meaning, and mortality — including the two cardiac arrests Jeff survived (yes, you read that right), and the unexpected video message he received from Paul Langlois while recovering. This episode reminds us why we do this show in the first place: for the love, for the connection, for the community. We even get a bonus English Lit breakdown of King Lear — and how defiance, irony, and Shakespearean tragedy might be woven into one of the Hip's most poetic tracks. (And yeah, we manage to keep the actual title of that track on the DL. You're welcome.)
Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a series of early chapter books by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen about "purrmaids," characters that are half kitten, half mermaid—and a spinoff about mermicorns, because don't all kids love kittens, mermaids and unicorns?Terri's random recommendation is a double dose of stories about Saturday Night Live. She listened to two short audiobooks: May You Live in Interesting Times: A Memoir, by Laraine Newman, and Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude, by Dan Aykroyd. Mentioned: Saturday Night, Ladies and Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music (especially the opening montage), and the debt snowball/debt avalanche techniques. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2021 on mom strikes.Next week's lineup: Lost S3 E2, "The Glass Ballerina," on Tuesday, June 10Duster S1 E3, "You're No Good," on Wednesday, June 11Weekly roundup on Thursday, June 12Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.
Ghost Investigation - Aviation Museum - Ghost in The Machine - Episode 205Back at the Infamous Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada,Home - Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada located beside the Richardson Airport in Winnipeg, Manitoba......and its HAUNTED!!!! even the volunteers and staff know its haunted. You have to remember these planes and artifacts carry ALOT of energy. Some people have even died in these planes that have been repaired to keep on display. Today's episode could be called 'Ghost in the Machine' as while we were talking to a volunteer about the one plane - our cell phones malfuctioned and locked up same as our microphones were acting up and we lost the audio - Here is the back story on that particular plane:50 years after a plane carrying residential school children crashed on Linwood Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (RAMWC) is erecting a monument in their honour. On June 24, 1972, a plane carrying eight students attending residential schools in Stonewall and Portage la Prairie, bound for Bunibonibee Cree Nation (formerly Oxford House), crashed in a vacant lot located between 426 and 430 Linwood Street just after takeoff.Students Margaret Robinson, Mary Rita Canada, Ethel Grieves, Rosalie Balfour, Wilkie Muskego, Iona Weenusk, and siblings Roy and Deborah Sinclair, along with pilot Scott Coughlin, all died in the crash.Or we could have called this episode 'The Twilight Zone' as there was a particular Air Canada flight (in which we heard a traveller died on-board) had a weird effect when kelly stepped out of the plane, and Jas had a similar experience as though you 'didn't know where you were' like you were stepping into a void for a few seconds. We deeply thank Kelly and Ashley, once again, for allowing us to tag along to record some of the stories while we investgated. It was a great night as Sher even was able to make it out - reunited and it felt so good! *CAUTION we use our new lapel mics, which worked better than just off of the cell phone, however, it would cut out when others were talking since the musuem is rather large, so we apologize for the noise cutting in and out, I tried to edit as best as possible. 'SPIRITS WITH SPIRITS' rides again! if you are in the Winnipeg area, please come down and join just tomorrow - Wednesday, June 25th from 7 to 9 PM at 'The King's Head Pub' 120 King Street! and did you know......its very HAUNTED.....see you there...if you dare ! Devin & James are back in the DEN to conclude their discussion about one of the greatest American actors ever to hit the screen, GENE HACKMAN! This time around, we reach into some slightly more obscure territory. We get into his early Western work, in THE HUNTING PARTY and BITE THE BULLET. We also discuss two films he made with a frequent collaborator, Arthur Penn: the underappreciated TARGET and the stone-cold neo-noir masterpiece, NIGHT MOVES. Actress Joanna Cassidy shows up as a match for Hackman in THE PACKAGE and UNDER FIRE. We also discuss a couple of misfires that may fall short of greatness (or even goodness, in some opinions). Still, we make the case that Hackman makes them interesting watches anyway: LOOSE CANNONS (with Dan Aykroyd and an insane Hitler sex tape plot) and LUCKY LADY (which puts him in a literal throuple with Liza Minnelli and Burt Reynolds!!!!). All this, plus many more films to add to your list. We could have honestly gone into a third episode with Hackman as the headline topic, and we hope you join us to celebrate his unique presence in cinema. Gene Hackman was truly one of a kind.

If you're in the mood for a walk down memory lane with a few laughs and some spicy debates, you've come to the right place! This episode dives into the beloved 1997 movie, Gross Point Blank, starring John Cusack, Minnie Driver, and the ever-charming Dan Aykroyd. With its killer soundtrack and quirky dialogues, it's a film that's close to my heart, though my co-hosts might beg to differ! Join us as we chat about the film's memorable music tracks from The Cure and The Clash, and how they add that extra zing to an already quirky storyline. We'll also be bantering about Cusack's portrayal of a hitman at his high school reunion, and whether or not Dan Aykroyd really steals the show. Whether you love it or not, it's undeniable that this film sparked some vibrant conversation and maybe even controversy among us.

Okay, today it's a very special episode. Firstly, because I'm talking about one my favourite films of the decade- John Landis' 'The Blues Brothers'- and secondly, because I'm joined once again by Liam Dempsey and Paul Willson, two of the hosts from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast. And we have much to discuss with this film and beyond. You can certainly expect us to examine the careers of Landis and his leads, Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi (commenting on the films '1941', 'Ghostbusters, 'Beverly Hills Cop 3', 'Blues Brothers 2000' to name but a few). So sit back and relax, pour yourself an orange whip, and listen as we discuss a stone-cold classic.
Dan Aykroyd drops some breaking Ghostbusters news. Reactions from Leafs fans at Maple Leafs Square after each game. Would you dump your partner to save your pet? A Helluva Story about finding a human tooth during a home reno. A round of Name That Quarantune. Plus, a round of 5IN7!
That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a hilarious stroll down memory lane to the night Peyton Manning traded his helmet for a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. From Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler dishing it out as the "Bronx Beat" ladies, to Andy Samberg's wild take on Sanjaya and a surprise visit from Dan Aykroyd, the show was packed with standout moments. Things get especially weird (and wonderful) when Manning joins Kristin Wiig for a late-night sketch that goes completely off the rails. But the real showstoppers? That infamous United Way spoof where Manning's tough love with a bunch of kids turns into comic gold, and Will Forte's unforgettable dance-floor meltdown in the Locker Room sketch—one he still calls a personal favorite. With clips, commentary, and memories from both Manning and Forte, this one's a winning highlight reel from a surprisingly game host. [EP 123]
This week, we talk a true bomb! The film that has kept Dan Ackroyd from ever directing again.. Nothing but Trouble! But what was this film going for and why did they let Chevy Chase make his character so mean? Find out as we try and figure out what went wrong with this infamous classic.
It's that special time, where Erika and Paul dive into an 80s comedy! This week, they're talking about the Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase vehicle Spies Like Us…and you might think you can guess how they'll feel about it, but this is a film that defies (some) expectations. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a deep dive into one of the most chaotic and heavily criticized seasons in Saturday Night Live history: Season 20, also known as The Bad Boys Club Season. Following the departure of core cast members like Phil Hartman, Rob Schneider, and Julia Sweeney, the show found itself leaning hard into the rowdy, often crude humor of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and David Spade—while sidelining much of the female cast, including Janine Garofalo, who left midway through the season. The cast was bloated, the writing uneven, and the press relentless. Nick walks through the entire season with behind-the-scenes stories, including how Jeff Daniels nearly suffered a serious makeup mishap, why Dan Aykroyd unofficially hosted instead of the listed John Goodman, and how the writers struggled with brilliant hosts like Bob Newhart, John Turturro, David Hyde Pierce, and Courtney Cox—while completely losing control during hosting gigs by George Foreman and Deion Sanders. Despite its rough reputation, the season had its moments: Norm Macdonald took over the Weekend Update desk, Molly Shannon made a strong debut halfway through, and both Damon Wayans and Dana Carvey returned to deliver some much-needed highlights. You'll also hear Stuart Smalley hilariously scolding the public for ignoring his movie, and Bill Murray delivering a moving tribute to the late Michael O'Donoghue. It's a full look at one of SNL's messiest, most fascinating seasons—flawed, but unforgettable. [Ep 122]

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the podcast as they discuss the 1985 comedy Spies Like Us. As we roll into the Summer of Chase, we get our first look at Prime Chevy along with Cuck Dan. Honestly how odd is it to cast your wife in a movie you wrote, but have her hooking up with your Co-Star. Weird, right? I guess even in the movie world it seemed odd to have Donna Dixon hooking up with a nerd like Dan Aykroyd. Anyway, there are some Russian in this one but the American turn out to be the bad guys. Just like last week, there was a difference of opinions when it came to the scores for this movie, but more toward the positive side. Enjoy the podcast.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick welcomes film expert, exhibitor, and historian Mike Kerz to the podcast to talk about his lifelong love for Saturday Night Live—a passion that began in his teen years when he would record each episode's audio with a portable tape recorder. As the co-creator of the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention and co-owner of The Midway Drive-In in Dixon, Illinois, Mike shares how SNL influenced both his sense of humor and his professional ventures. They count down Mike's 5 Favorite SNL Sketches of All Time, highlighting iconic performances from Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, and the darkly brilliant Michael O'Donoghue, whose work Mike especially admires. The conversation also includes a deep dive into what many consider to be the greatest SNL sketch ever: The Last Voyage of the Star Trek Enterprise—a true classic that gets the attention and appreciation it deserves. It's 106 miles to Chicago, they've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and they're wearing sunglasses....The brothers are Joliet Jake Blue (John Belushi) and Elmwood Blues (Dan Ackroyd)....and they're on a mission from God. Well actually they're on a mission to save the Catholic home where they grew up and to get the band back together. Seems simple enough but there are a LOT of obstacles in their way including US Marshalls, Chicago police, Illinois State Troopers, the Illinois Nazis, the Good Ol' Boys, and...the late, great Carrie Fisher playing "Mystery Woman" who comes HEAVILY armed! :o John Landis (Animal House, Coming to America, An American Werewolf in London) directed this wildly ambitious action comedy musical loosely adapted from the two titular fictional brothers who performed on Saturday Night Live around this time. Plot is but an afterthought when you have wall-to-wall car chases and/or extended musical numbers from several R&B music luminaries including Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, and Chaka Khan. And that's not even accounting for an extended stacked cast including Kathleen Freeman, John Candy, Steven Williams, Henry Gibson, Charles Napier, and countless others!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
