Gwynn & Chris On Demand, hosted by Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Chris Ello, afternoons 3-7pm on 973 The Fan.

Chris and Skraby talked about the Padres playing the Guardians in Cleveland and Luis Rengifo joined us for Friar Friday!

Luis Rengifo didn't expect to become this important to the Padres' season, but here he is — anchoring left field, delivering in big spots, and helping push San Diego back into the thick of the wild card race. After finally getting a day off following a stretch of 26 games in 27 days, Rengifo joined Friar Friday to talk about the grind, his ongoing adjustment to outfield play at Petco Park, and the first grand slam of his career. "It feels amazing," he said of the slam. "I never hit a grand slam. But for me, it's just go there and know what situation you have and be productive for the team." With the Padres firmly in playoff position, Rengifo says the team knows it's time to pick up the pace. "That's the time you want to go to the playoffs. You want to fight every single day."

Gone are the days when Buehler could simply blow 98 mph past hitters on command. During the interview, he spoke openly about having to reinvent himself and relying more on his cutter to survive. Instead, he uses it strategically to navigate through lineups without the overpowering velocity of his past. "I think trying to establish my four-seam fastball regardless of the fact that it's not 95, 97, 98 like it was in years past is important for me, and letting [the cutter] kind of be a weapon and not really the whole show."
