The author and actor thinks summer in Australia is done bigger, better and weirder than anywhere else. For three months of the year, life slows down and heats up. But for William, summer in Australia is an imperfect paradise where more than anything, people yearn to connect.Summer can be a hellish time in Australia, where temperatures soar and fires can turn bush and buildings to rubble in an instant. But despite the challenges, William McInnes looks upon this time of year with great affection and nostalgia.Growing up in Redcliffe, Queensland, William remembers the heat that burnt through his thongs, the strange ritual of assembling a plastic European Christmas tree on a 40-degree day, and simple moments in the sun like jumping off his dad's shoulders into the cool coastal water.Every summer connects William with his family, his childhood and his past, just like millions of other Australians on riverbanks and beaches around the country. It's a Scorcher: Tales of the Australian Summer is published by Hachette. This episode of Conversations explores seasons, heat, bushfires, Koolewong, weather forecast, drought, BOM, swimming, tennis, Australian Open, Boxing Day Test, Cricket, Ashes, book, memoir, writing, Australiana, Kitsch, climate change, nostalgia, family time, Christmas, holidays, New Year, how to survive the holidays, road trips, vacation, bikini, swimmers, togs, school holidays, parents. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. There's a field of blue weber agave in Jalisco that SACRED has purchased. The plan is … well, a secret. But there's a possible glitch in the secret plan and that glitch is the picudo, a weevil famous for eating agave. Are we going to let a famous weevil interrupt our plan? No — we're going to bug out!Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. This episode is hosted by Lou Bank and Greg Rutkowski of Finca 18 with wisdom from Isaac Arellanes Santos, an agricultural consultant, and interstitial fun from Agave Road Trip Poet Laureate and Official Troubadour Larry Beckett!Episode NotesShout outs this episode to the the 818 Tequila-funded water-security project in Chacala, Jalisco, Emilio Sengar, Eduardo Aguilar from Telesecundaria El Manantial, and Sergio Garnier of Mezcal Ultramundo! The cover to this episode is everything to me. The art is by Gilbert Hernandez — Beto, of Los Bros Hernandez, creators of the comics series Love and Rockets. When I was a 15- or 16-year-old kid, this comic book showed me that comics could tell any story. The magical realism that Beto and his brothers Jaime and Mario depicted in Mexico and Southern California stuck with me. I think a lot of the joy I feel when I'm traveling in rural Mexico now is the discovery of images that they planted in my teenage brain. I was a comics geek growing up — mainly Marvel with a bit of DC on the side. Then some of the alternative superhero stuff when that started popping in the 1980s. But Los Bros Hernandez showed me a whole different world. And that art was colored by my friend and former Marvel Comics colleague Gregory Wright! When I moved as a 21-year-old kid to New York to take the job with Marvel, Greg was one of the first to welcome me, introducing me to the fabled pastrami-on-rye at the dearly departed Carnegie Deli! Chrome tanks gleaming in the bed, four hydraulic pumps ready to dance, and a pearl-white El Camino built from love and discipline—Rudy joins us to share how lowrider craft, family tradition, and clean engineering come together in a car that means more than metal. He walks us through paint choices, a four-pump setup, 13-inch whitewalls, and the geometry behind extended control arms that make three-wheeling possible, plus the real-world trade-offs like accelerated tire wear and why alignment becomes a balancing act. The story moves beyond parts as Rudy traces a path from street conflict to cage fighting to calmer streets and showgrounds, paying that focus forward to his kids and a near-original '96 Impala SS.We switch lanes to explore six iconic dashboard styles that collectors love, each one a time capsule of design and technology. From the bold clarity of American muscle to the wood-and-leather elegance of European classics, the sweeping Art Deco forms of the '30s and '40s, the minimalist pragmatism of Scandinavian design, and the digital, driver-centric supercar era, we show how a dashboard can reveal a car's soul. Custom hot rods cap the tour with one-off faces that speak the owner's language in billet, color, and gauge selection. To round out the ride, we map festive road trips through San Antonio: River Walk lights cascading over the water, SeaWorld's massive displays and live shows, hot-chocolate trolley tours, Zoo Lights, skating at Hemisphere Park, and Fiesta Texas in full holiday mode. Don't miss the transformed Alamo experience, complete with Phil Collins' narration and a collection that reframes the site's true scale. Whether you're tuning hydraulics, studying dashboards, or planning a family cruise, you'll find ideas, history, and heart.Enjoyed the show? Episode 396: In this episode, we learn about an enigmatic narcissistic psychopath who led the Californian cult called The Children of Thunder. Glenn Taylor Helzer, and the other leadership was comprised of his brother Justin Helzer and their follower Dawn Godman. Raised in a strict Mormon home, Taylor's life spiralled after years of mental health trouble. By 2000, the trio had formed a cult under Taylor's delusional leadership. That summer, they murdered Ivan and Annette Stineman, Selina Bishop (daughter of guitarist Elvin Bishop), Jennifer Villarin, and James Gamble. The crime spree and investigation shocked authorities and families, exposing how Taylor twisted faith and loyalty into violence. Did the program live from Pryor, Oklahoma (it's a bit nippy out here!). Covered some truly insane cultural items at the start, and then moved on to responding to @BishopJaxi's attack on sola scriptura on X. Important material for folks wanting to provide sound responses to those seeking a form of the church that Christ never intended us to have.
