Rose Hamilton, CEO of Compass Rose Ventures and co-host of The Story of a Brand Show, sits down with Ben Zvaifler, Founder & CEO of Cloud Water Filters, for a conversation that cuts right to the heart of one of the most overlooked categories in consumer wellness.  Cloud isn't just a better water filter, it's a second-act founder's bet that the water sitting quietly under your kitchen sink is the next major frontier in the modern health-conscious home. * A second-act founder who chose harder, on purpose. After selling Pupbox to Petco, Ben applied everything he learned about recurring revenue and brand trust to tackle a far bigger, more complex problem: a water filtration category that hadn't meaningfully innovated in decades. * "Safe to drink" and "healthy to drink" are not the same thing. From PFAS forever chemicals to lead pipes contaminating water between the treatment plant and your home, Ben breaks down why reverse osmosis is the only technology that truly creates a clean slate. * The black box problem no one was solving. Legacy systems gave consumers zero visibility. Cloud's connected app delivers real-time water quality data, intelligent filter-change alerts, and remote diagnostics — turning a forgotten appliance into a trusted relationship. * Data as a moat. The behavioral and water quality data Cloud captures powers a customer service experience legacy players simply can't replicate — and drives the kind of lifetime retention that makes the unit economics work. * Demand was never the problem — hardware is hard. Chip shortages, tariffs, and capital-intensive inventory have been the real challenge. Ben's candor here is a masterclass in what experienced founders understand that first-timers often don't. Join us in listening to this episode for a genuinely eye-opening conversation about water, wellness, and what it really means to build a modern consumer brand in a category that's been quietly ignored for far too long.  Whether you're a founder, an operator, or someone who just wants to know what's actually in the water your family drinks every day, this one is worth your time.    For more on Cloud Water Filters visit: https://www.cloudwaterfilters.com/ If you enjoyed this episode, please leave The Story of a Brand Show a rating and review.  Plus, don't forget to follow us on Apple and Spotify.  Your support helps us bring you more content like this!

We blew the morning slot, so you're getting the full BD Sports whiparound on a sneaky‑wild couple days in MLB instead. We start with a “light” Monday slate of eight games: Rays 3–2 over Cleveland to push to 17–11 while the Guardians fall back to .500, the Cardinals closing in on the Pirates with a win in Pittsburgh, Dylan Cease finally taking his first loss as the Red Sox blank the Blue Jays 5–0, and the Mariners getting blasted 11–4 by the Twins while Luis Castillo wears it. Then it's Angels–White Sox turning into an 8–7 mess as the Angels fall to 12–18 after a hot start, the Yankees continuing their run of dominance by dropping the Rangers under .500, the Padres outslugging the Cubs 9–7 at Petco behind Vasquez, and the Dodgers quietly cruising to 20–9 with a 5–4 win over the Marlins. From there we move into today's slate, headlined by the A's doing A's things and giving up a three‑run bomb to Bobby Witt Jr. in the 10th to lose 4–1 after a great Aaron Civale start and a Salvador Pérez missile to dead center. Around the league, the Rays win 1–0 in Cleveland behind Martinez and his 1.7 ERA while Tanner Bibee keeps scuffling, the Orioles climb back to a game under .500 as the Astros keep sucking, and the Reds look for real at 19–10 as Chase Burns shoves and the Rockies get roughed up with Kyle Freeland on the mound. We hit the Cardinals beating the hell out of the Pirates 11–7, the Giants continuing to suck as Luzardo and the Phillies shut them out 7–0, the Blue Jays getting a needed 3–0 win behind a strong Savage outing, and the Mets finally showing a pulse with Clay Holmes while Littell wears a 7‑plus ERA. We close with the Braves dropping the Tigers back to 15–15, the Mariners taking it to Joe Ryan and the Twins 7–1, the White Sox quietly stacking wins with Murakami already up to 12 bombs, and a full standings tour that has the Yankees mopping up the AL East, the A's somehow leading the AL West, and the NL Central completely wide open with every team over .500. A disciplined pipeline and strategic site selection approach are enabling growth despite limited supplyRetail real estate didn't change as much as people thought. The fundamentals never left. What changed is how precisely you have to execute them.Jim Lampassi, Senior Vice President of Real Estate & Construction at Academy Sports + Outdoors, has spent 45 years in site selection and development, helping build brands across Marshalls, Petco, and now one of the fastest-growing sporting goods retailers in the country. Today, Academy has grown to a wide network of 300+ stores across 21 states, with a clear path for continued expansion. What stands out isn't just the scale. It's the discipline behind how that growth happens. This market is defined by constraint. High occupancy. Limited new development. Fewer deals to chase. That pressure is forcing better decision-making. For Academy, growth isn't about finding opportunities. It's about building them. That means creating a pipeline larger than the goal, leaning into relationships with boutique developers, and being willing to do deals that require more effort to get across the finish line. There's also a shift that's no longer up for debate.E-commerce didn't replace stores. It made them more important. Physical locations drive awareness, influence customer behavior, and increase digital demand. When stores close, online sales don't fill the gap. They drop. The strongest retailers understand the connection and build around it.At the center of it all is a simple idea. Value wins.In an inflationary environment, customers are more selective. Retailers that consistently deliver accessible price points without sacrificing quality are the ones that keep traffic and loyalty. It's not a trend. It's a requirement. For owners and operators, the takeaway is clear. The easy deals are gone. Growth now depends on discipline, relationships, and long-term thinking. This isn't about finding space. It's about earning it.What You'll HearWhy retail fundamentals still matter after 45 yearsHow Academy Sports is growing in a high-occupancy marketWhy building a bigger pipeline is critical to hitting targetsHow boutique developers are unlocking new dealsWhy retailers are creating sites instead of finding themHow stores are driving e-commerce, not competing with itWhy value remains core to Academy's strategyHow retail real estate creates jobs at scaleWhy industry relationships still drive opportunityWhat it takes to expand with discipline todayChapters00:01 – Jim Lampassi's 45-Year Retail JourneyA 45-year career across major retail brands and what shaped it.02:27 – Why Retail Fundamentals Still HoldThe fundamentals that still determine whether a deal works.03:03 – Inside Academy's Expansion StoryFrom tire shop to 300+ stores and expanding footprint.04:21 – Why Value Drives Retail SuccessHow pricing strategy defines long-term success.05:40 – Retail as a Job Creation EngineRetail as a job creation engine across industries.08:16 – The Role of Industry RelationshipsWhy being active in ICSC changes careers and outcomes.10:27 – Retail's High-Occupancy Reality95% occupancy and what it means for landlords and tenants.12:12 – Finding Deals in a Constrained MarketBoutique developers, incentives, and building your own pipeline.15:09 – Developing the Next GenerationHow the next generation is entering the industry.18:02 – Rethinking Real Estate Team StructureIn-house vs. brokers and what actually works.20:06 – Why Stores Still Drive DemandWhy physical retail is still driving digital demand.22:31 – Building Marshalls in Puerto RicoOpening 11 stores in one day and what it took to get there.26:56 – Academy's Disciplined Growth PlanWhite space, expansion plans, and long-term positioning.29:14 – The Future of Retail SupplyWhy retail supply constraints may stick longer than expected.

In this episode of Power Producer Shop Talk, host David Carothers interviews Pam Seidler, the only female contestant in Season 3 of The Protégé. Pam shares her diverse background, from working in radio and TV to oxygen sales and a stint in the captive insurance world with AAA. Now, she's diving headfirst into commercial insurance, eager to prove that being new to the industry is not a disadvantage but an opportunity to learn without bad habits. David and Pam discuss the importance of mentorship, finding the right agency culture, and why starting directly in the middle market can be more beneficial than cutting teeth on small commercial accounts. Pam also opens up about her niche focus on the pet industry and gathering places (coffee shops, etc.), leveraging her past experiences to build a unique book of business. Key Highlights: Breaking into the Industry Pam shares her winding career path, which included stops at Fox News, tech startups, and medical sales, before a chance encounter on a plane planted the seed for an insurance career. After gaining experience as a captive agent, she made the leap to the independent side, drawn by the freedom and limitless potential of commercial insurance. The "New Producer" Advantage David argues that hiring producers with zero insurance experience is often better than hiring veterans with bad habits. Pam embodies this "blank slate" advantage, approaching the competition with a hunger to learn and no preconceived notions about how things should be done. This mindset allows her to absorb coaching and implement new strategies rapidly. Niche Focus: Pets & Gathering Places Drawing on her early career aspirations with Petco and PetSmart, Pam discusses her strategy to target the pet industry—from groomers to boarding facilities—as a primary niche. She also plans to focus on "gathering places" like coffee shops, utilizing her natural ability as a connector to build relationships in these community hubs. Finding the Right Agency Culture David advises Pam (and listeners) on how to interview an agency. He suggests bold moves like asking to speak with top and bottom producers, as well as current and former clients, to get a true picture of the agency's deliverables and support structure. This transparency is key to finding a long-term home. The Power of Spousal Support David shares a personal story about how his wife's unwavering support was the catalyst for launching Florida Risk Partners. He emphasizes that a strong support system at home is crucial for any producer navigating the ups and downs of a sales career, a philosophy he integrates into his Producers in Paradise event. With our free valuation calculator, answer a few questions about your business, and you'll get an immediate estimate of the value of your business. You might be surprised by how much you can get for it: https://flippa.com/exit -- In this episode of The Exit, entrepreneur Ben Zvaifler shares his journey from launching PupBox, a subscription box for puppy owners, to selling it to Petco and later starting his new venture, Cloud Water Filters. Inspired by his own struggles as a new dog owner, Ben built PupBox during the subscription box boom, even pitching successfully on Shark Tank—securing a deal with Robert Herjavec and a surge of publicity. Eventually, Petco acquired the company, where Ben spent four years navigating corporate life, scaling during COVID, and hitting earn-out targets. Reflecting on the acquisition, Ben highlights lessons in negotiation, timing, and the importance of clean financials. He also shares candid advice for entrepreneurs: secure multiple offers, prepare thoroughly for earn-outs, and understand the corporate dynamics you're stepping into. After Petco later sold PupBox to FabFitFun, Ben moved on to disrupt another space—water filtration. His new startup, Cloud Water Filters, offers a connected reverse osmosis system that not only purifies but also tracks water quality and usage. Ben's story underscores the resilience needed in entrepreneurship: survive the lows, learn from each exit, and use that experience to build bigger and bolder ventures. -- Ben Zvaifler is the Co-Founder and CEO of Cloud Water Filters, a consumer hardware company delivering clean, alkaline drinking water through smart, sensor-enabled filtration systems. With a background in building direct-to-consumer brands, Ben is passionate about using technology and design to elevate everyday experiences. Previously, Ben co-founded PupBox, a subscription service for new puppy owners. PupBox was featured on Shark Tank, highlighted as one of the most disruptive DTC brands by the International Advertising Bureau, and acquired by Petco Animal Supplies in 2017. Most notably, we had 7D, Color whose name comes from the Greek word for "cuttlefish", SEPIA; the interestingly named 36A, Reptile that can reach up to 10 feet in length, MONITORLIZARD; and finally we went with the only loch we knew in 65A, Largest loch in Scotland by volume, NESS.In other news, it's Triplet Tuesday™️, and today Jean's in the hot seat, so you'll definitely want to check that out!Show note imagery: The  el Museo del Prado, which at one point had the distinction of having "the largest concentration of masterpieces per square meter".

“You have to earn a cat's love and respect—and when you do, you have it forever.” – Dr. Nicole Liebman This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and the Rescue Cleaners and Disinfectants. In this inspiring episode of the Community Cats Podcast, host Stacy LeBaron sits down with Dr. Nicole Liebman and Ron Coughlin, the passionate duo behind PAD Home Pet Services—a pioneering in-home pet care company dedicated to making veterinary support more accessible and compassionate, especially for cats. Dr. Liebman, a lifelong animal lover and veterinary oncologist, shares her deep respect for feline behavior and the importance of minimizing stress during care. Alongside Ron Coughlin, former CEO of Petco and current animal welfare advocate, the pair explore how PAD's in-home model meets critical needs in underserved communities—reducing stress for cats, supporting overburdened clinics, and empowering veterinary technicians. They unpack staggering industry realities—like how over half of all cats never see a veterinarian each year—and share how PAD fills the gap by providing services such as nail clipping, hospice support, post-surgical care, and more, all within the comfort of a pet's home. The episode highlights collaborations with rescue groups like Little Wanderers and emphasizes how this innovative model is already expanding beyond New York City. Listeners will also gain a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of veterinary care deserts, technician shortages, and how PAD's community-focused, tech-driven model aims to be a game-changer—without sacrificing the personal, heart-centered care that animals deserve. Whether you're a cat lover, rescuer, or industry professional, this conversation will leave you inspired to reimagine what accessible, compassionate pet care can look like. I had a blast sitting down with Dan Schaefer, Founder & CEO of Native Pet.  We kicked things off with gratitude. Dan shared how his wife was his “first angel investor,” backing his leap from BCG into entrepreneurship while raising a young family. From there, we got into the big idea behind Native Pet: “around-the-bowl nutrition.” Instead of trying to replace what's in your dog's bowl, Native Pet helps pet parents customize it with clean-label, effective supplements dogs actually love to eat. Dan walked me through their earliest wins, such as transforming messy canned pumpkin into a shelf-stable powdered pumpkin with a smart fiber blend, and their breakout hit, The Daily (an all-in-one scoop inspired by human greens routines). We also dug into hard-earned lessons (hello, Target packaging panic) and a huge upcoming launch that brings today's human gut-health wave into pet wellness. Highlights * Gratitude that fuels the journey: Dan credits his wife and co-founder Pat's family for believing early, packing boxes, cheering them on, and making “zero to one” possible.   * The Native Pet thesis: Focus on supplements to personalize health “around the bowl,” so pet parents can keep their preferred food and add targeted support.   * Simple, smart innovation: From powdered Pumpkin to Omega Oil, clean-label formats and taste are non-negotiable—if dogs won't eat it, nothing else matters.   * Breakout product: The Daily—their one-scoop daily multivitamin—became Native Pet's best seller and even hit #1 in multivitamins on Amazon right after Prime Day.   * Where to find them: Online at nativepet.com, Amazon, Chewy, and nationwide at Target, Petco, PetSmart, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Tractor Supply, Meijer, Pet Supplies Plus, and more.  Plus, try the website quiz to get the right plan for your dog.   * One more thing I'm excited about: Native Pet's new GutWell line (launching August) targets specific outcomes through the microbiome—Clean Breath, Trim Down, Stress Support, Itchy Skin, and Power Poop—in a tasty, clean-label, cold-pressed pellet with bold, premium packaging. Join me, Ramon Vela, in listening to the episode: If you care about helping your dog live a happier, healthier, and longer life—and want practical ways to personalize their nutrition—you'll love this conversation.
