Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

Every year recruiting ranks cause a lot of animosity between college football fans across the country. If a player commits to your school they're underrated and should be ranked higher. If a player commits to a rival school, they're not that good. Or atleast that's what I see on Twitter. We received our latest conversation piece this week when John Garcia Jr. of Sports Illustrated released the SI 99. The SI99 is a collection of the best prospects and the prospects with the most potential in the entire country. For Texas, this list included Arch Manning, Malik Muhammad, Cedric Baxter, Johntay Cook, Ryan Niblett, and Derion Gullette and possibly Jordan Matthews. Whew. John joins the show to discuss these players rankings in the SI 99 and why he chose to place them accordingly. I believe you'll really enjoy his reasoning for ranking Gullette higher than David Hicks and Anthony Hill, who is committed to Texas A&M. Also, John tells us that he believes Sydir Mitchell is not far away from cracking this list. In addition to that, we talk about two prospects that Texas is eyeing in the state of Florida. Damon Wilson and Jordan Hall. What do they bring to the table and what would those commitments mean for Steve Sarkisian and company. Hook Em Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Miami Hurricanes commit Jaden Rashada has been ranked number 7 on Sports Illustrated's SI99 list, ranking the top prospects for the class of 2023. Rashada is Miami's top ranked prospect. Surprisingly, he ranks better than Texas commit Arch Manning. Arch was the 5th ranked quarterback and 10th overall prospect. Rashada has smooth mechanics and an NFL-type arm. Manning gets knocked for not participating in many camps or playing against the top competition. Will Rashada wind up having a better career than the nephew of Peyton and Eli? Host Alex Donno breaks down Rashada's potential and reflects on a very stacked Miami Hurricanes quarterback lineage. After Tyler Van Dyke, Jake Garcia is in line to take over and then players like Jacurri Brown, Jaden Rashada and Emory Williams will compete. Donno takes a look at the other 5 Hurricanes commits who made the SI99. OT Francis Mauigoa, DE Jayden Wayne, LB Malik Bryant, LB Raul Aguirre and WR Nathaniel “Ray Ray” Joseph all made the cut! Donno discusses a recent piece by David Lake of Inside The U on Miami's offensive line. Canes coaches think the O-Line will be one of Miami's strengths this season. The Hurricanes graded out well last year in pass protection, but will they be able to bring their run-blocking to the type of standard of Josh Gattis' 2021 Michigan Wolverines or Mario Cristobal's 2021 Oregon Ducks? Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

The University of Texas has an outstanding history and pedigree at the RB position. Some people (mostly in Austin) might even go as far to say that Texas is RBU. You can make the argument when you've had running backs by the names of Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Jamaal Charles, and current Heisman Trophy candidate Bijan Robinson. The nature of recruiting requires you to consistently look for the future of the position, and it sure seems like Texas has done that in a big way. Our latest commit in a top 5 recruiting class headlined by Arch Manning , is four-star runningback Cedric Baxter out of Edgewater High school in Florida. Some sites have him as high as the #1 running back in the country. & now it looks like Texas will have a dominant trio of offense in the coming years at the 40 acres, with Arch Manning , Johntay Cook, and now Cedric Baxter locked into this class. Simply put, Baxter has really good size and exceptional explosiveness to match that big 6'2 215lb frame. John Garcia from Sports Illustrated has compared him to Najee Harris and Leveon Bell, who have both spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Other comparisons that have been floated around are Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, and even the late great Texas Longhorn Cedric Benson. Baxter is a very patient, no-nonsense one cut runner with the ability to consistently make defenders miss in the open field while also having the ability to run through defenders as well. He also looks very smooth and comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield as a receiver, which he will get plenty of opportunities to do in Steve Sarkisian's offense. The addition of Cedric Baxter almost all but guarantees that Texas will have a top 5 recruiting class in consecutive years, which just so happens to be Sark's first two years at Texas. The best players in high school typically turn out to be the best players in college, and Sark has shown an exceptional ability to recruit high school students. Not only that, but the reach of this Texas Longhorn program is one we haven't seen in a while. In this recruiting class alone, Texas has commits from California, Louisiana, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Florida in addition to fourteen prospects out of the Lone Star State. Hook Em and welcome to the 40 Cedric Baxter. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. The 2022 Coaches Poll is out and features many teams in and around Texas. Plus, the reason Arch Manning chose the Texas Longhorns

Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

After a very hot end to the month of June which was catapulted by the commitment of Arch Manning, it seemed as though Texas had cooled off on the recruiting trail in the month of July. Following Arch, Texas was able to land the likes of Johntay Cook, Malik Muhammad and others, but most of the momentum in July was going to schools like Miami, Oklahoma and Alabama. Well with atleast three priority targets for the longhorns scheduled to announce in August, Texas sits at 1/1 after Derion Gullette made his decision to commit to Steve Sarkisian and the University of Texas. After missing out on some priority edge and lb targets including Anthony Hill, Colton Vasek and Hunter Osborne, it was a must that Texas get the priority edge rusher out of Marlin, TX. He brings a very athletic skillset to the table, was a multiple sport athlete in high school and also dominated on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Having Derion Gullette on this defense going into the SEC will only be a plus for Pete K, Gary Patterson and this defense. When you look at where this defense has struggled over the years, it is mainly in the trenches on both sides. Players like Derion Gullette will help come in and fix a pass rush that was historically bad last year, only 20 sacks on the entire season. With other priority targets in this recruiting class such as Cedric Baxter, Jordan Matthews, and Jalen Hale still set to announce, it was important that Texas start off August on the right foot by landing one of the best EDGE prospects in the country out of their own backyard. We should fully expect Steve Sarkisian to continue this momentum and help Texas land a top 5 recruiting class for back to back years for the first time since 2018 and 2019. All Gas No Brakes as Sark would say. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

The University of Texas has a QB room that rivals the glory years of the program when Vince Young and Colt Mccoy were at the helm. During that span, the University of Texas went to two national championship games, winning one against Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and the USC Trojans. Coincidentally, Steve Sarkisian who currently coaches the Longhorns, was a playcaller on that USC team that lost to Vince Young and Texas. Now, with four very talented quarterbacks on or projected to join his roster, Sark looks to return Texas to the days of Vince Young and Colt Mccoy. The issue (a good issue) is that not all of these quarterbacks can play at one time. Most people have deemed it a foregone conclusion that Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning are the quarterbacks of the future for the Longhorns. There is a large group of people however that think that Maalik Murphy, the 4-star QB out of Gardena, CA is the type of signal caller and leader that has been missing at the 40 acres for the large part of a decade. One of those people is John Davis, who covered Maalik in high school for the Long Beach press telegram. John joins Locked on Longhorns all the way from California to discuss what makes Maalik special on and off the field. From his huge “Cam Newton” like frame, to his rocket arm (can throw 70 yards with ease), to his work ethic and leadership off the field. There is certainly a lot to like about Maalik Murphy and you can certainly understand why Sark made his commitment a priority. On the same token, you can say the same about Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. Whoever gets the start remains to be seen, but if you take two things from this interview, the first is that whoever is going to be the starter at the University of Texas is going to be really good and the second is, don't EVER count Maalik Murphy out. In the opening take, Grant wonders if an aspect of NIL will ultimately benefit the schools who have taken more of a "wait & see" approach. Then Lee joins in what turns out to be a show filled with a lot of recruiting talk. We begin by discussing QB Jackson Arnold, his tape, and what his commitment means big picture for OU in the new Brent Venables' era (8:10). Some brief Arch Manning conspiracy theory talk (28:00). OU's picked up 8 blue chip recruits recently and the early returns on Venables' tenure look to be even better than the beginning of Lincoln Riley's stint as OU's HC (34:30). Are some schools not delivering on NIL promises? Grant's skeptical that NIL money will continue to pour in for schools because there may not be guaranteed return on investment. Lee assumes all the boosters who've been donating to schools for years are just now donating to collectives -- which will allow NIL to continue to be a thing. No matter what's the case, it would appear OU is in a good position. Listen and make your own call (43:20). Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

Questions I asked John Garcia: 1) On Wednesday July 20th, a crystal ball was put in for Payton Kirkland to Texas. This obviously surprised Texas fans as Texas did not make his top schools. Payton Kirkland responded to that crystal ball with three tweets: 1. Fake news *100* emoji 2. Haven't taken a visit or anything 3. Now why would I go to TEXASS 72 hours later he committed to Texas. Have you ever seen anything like this and what is Texas getting in Kirkland? Is him not visiting Texas before committing something or nothing? 2. The key word we've heard in this recruiting cycle at Texas is "relationships". Two Texas commits, Johntay Cook & Malik Muhammad, have great relationships with Javien Toviano. Everyday I convince myself more and more that Toviano won't be able to say no to Arch, Johntay & Malik. What would a corner tandom of Malik & Toviano look like at Texas? 3. Maybe a more realistic corner target is Jordan Matthews out of Baton Rouge. What does he bring to the table? 4. When I watch Cedric Baxter I see a no-nonsense, one cut downhill runner that doesn't shy away from contact. Who is your player comp for Baxter? 5. TJ Shanahan, interior offensive lineman, from Westlake has Texas in his top 5. He seems to be an A&M lean, but would it make sense for Kyle Flood to add another offensive lineman, given the 12 commitments in the last two classes? 6. This class will forever be thought of as the Arch Manning class, but outside of Archibald, which Texas commit is most likely to emerge as the best player from this recruiting class? Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

The Texas Longhorns have been one of the hottest teams on the recruiting trail this year and it continues with Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns landing their 19th commitment in the 2023 class with talented cornerback out of South Oak Cliff, Malik Muhammad. Malik has won a championship on every level of football he has played at, little league, middle school, high school, and he hopes to continue that trend at the University of Texas. We knew that the addition of Arch Manning would bring a lot of really talented players with him to the University of Texas, mostly on the offensive side of the ball. But if Texas wants to compete for a Big 12 championship, and ultimately for SEC championships and national titles, they need to add talented defensive players like Malik Muhammad to their roster as well. Malik Muhammad currently is ranked as the 43rd recruit in the country, five spots below talented receiver and Texas commit Johntay Cook. As John Garcia from Sports Illustrated explains in the video, he is one of the most complete defensive backs in the nation. His ability to play in man coverage, zone coverage, and make plays on the ball will pay dividends for this defense for years to come. This is one of the best players in the nation at a premium position and an outstanding recruiting win for Steve Sarkisian and the University of Texas as they continue their quest to locking up a likely top 3 class and potentially the #1 recruiting class in the nation. Steve Sarkisian has taught a masterclass in talent acquisition since he arrived as the head coach at the University of Texas. His ability to acquire talent has gone beyond recruiting as he has added dynamic coaches in Tashard Choice, Brennan Marion, and Gary Patterson to his coaching staff. When we talk recruiting, he brought in a top 5 class headlined by Devon Campbell and Kelvin Banks. He brought in one of the most talked about quarterback recruits in the last decade in Quinn Ewers. Sark somehow one-upped that by bringing in the most hyped football recruit ever in Arch Manning. The emphasis in the trenches has been the biggest story as to why the energy around this Texas football team is different. In this video I explain why Sark bringing in 22 players in the trenches since his arrival will be a direct determinant of success for the Texas Longhorns over the next few years. Following that we discuss why the defensive line will dictate the sucess of the Texas Longhorns football team this year. That may sound crazy with players like Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy, but for a team that only had 20 sacks last year, without a consistent pass rush, this team will not reach its true ceiling. Players like Alfred Collins, Keondre Coburn, Justice Finkley and more will have to breakout this season and consistently put pressure on opposing quarterbacks if they want to contend for a Big 12 championship. At the end of the show, I touch on the Arterio Morris situation, the talented freshman basketball player at the University of Texas. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The month of June was great for the Texas Longhorns on the recruiting trail, landing 12 of their 18 overall commitments, including No. 1 overall player Arch Manning. Manning's commitment started a wave of momentum, propelling Texas to nine other commitments -- including adding two additional five-star players. The commitments shot Texas up as nigh as No. 2 in the recruiting rankings, but movement in early July has Texa settling in comfortably at No. 4 in the country. So where do we think Texas will end up in February when all of the ink is dry? To help us break down the current state of recruiting, we reached out to Hudson Standish of Horns247 to add some layers to the conversation. We discussed June's Arch Madness, what we should expect moving forward from Texas, and what it says about Steve Sarkisian's immediate future in Austin. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook.
