Brendan and KVV begin this Friday episode with some clean up on the sweeping changes announced from the PGA Tour this week, including the initial “reporting” and subsequent freak out that places like Pine Valley, Cypress Point, and Seminole could host the re-imagined PGA Tour Championship. They discuss some Travelers odds and ends, where Scottie’s missing belt is a big story, and this also leads to a devastating drive by of Arch Manning. Then they discuss video of Rory McIlroy playing Birkdale on the day of a PGA Tour Signature event and reporting from Bob Harig that he has received a special discretionary exemption to maintain his membership even though he will not meet the minimum number of starts after another skip this week. Nelly Korda’s early start at the Women’s PGA is also discussed, as well as her embrace of being the star of that tour. They also discuss the new pronunciation of Turkey or Türkiye before getting to a Flashback Friday on another U.S. Open rules classic, namely the double chip of TC Chen that lost him the 1985 U.S. Open. Good news came out of college football this week... somehow. Ciarnan and Kev dive into the conclusion of the Brendan Sorsby saga after declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft, discussing how Texas Tech's gamble on a quarterback turned into one of the biggest offseason controversies in the sport despite the fact that Sorsby is, by most accounts, pretty mid. The guys break down the NCAA's handling of the situation, gambling rules in college sports, and whether Sorsby actually has an NFL future. They also discuss Arch Manning's continued grip on the college football world, Zachariah Branch reportedly leaving USC over facility restrictions, college football's obsession with neutral-site games, and why Notre Dame always seems to find its way into the conversation. Plus, thoughts on TCU's shamrock-themed uniforms ahead of the Aer Lingus Classic and a heated debate over field storming. Their conclusion? The only teams storming the field are either poverty programs or little brothers. College football chaos, NCAA controversy, transfer portal drama, and plenty of hot takes. Ken and Lima bring in CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Ryan Wilson, who confirms that Sorsby's on-field talent is legitimate — going as far as saying he'd take Sorsby over Arch Manning on film alone. Wilson acknowledges the November collapse pattern is a real concern but stops short of pinning it entirely on Sorsby, noting circumstance and drops played a role. On the suspension question, Wilson says the Calvin Ridley precedent is the closest comparison but the situations differ enough that the NFL's ruling is genuinely unpredictable, with anything from one game to a full year on the table. The interview backfires somewhat on Ken's anti-Sorsby stance, with Lima noting that Wilson's glowing talent evaluation only makes it harder to dismiss the possibility — and Ken teases that one coach's single sentence may be enough to change his mind entirely.

Fresh off Ryan Wilson's emphatic endorsement of Sorsby's talent, Ken grudgingly steelmans the pro-Sorsby argument — pointing out that Arch Manning could stay in college, Dante Moore could bust, and the Browns might be left with nothing if they pass on a guy scouts take 10 out of 10 times over the most hyped quarterback in the 2027 class. Ken also plays a clip of Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian leaving the door open on Arch returning to college, which only adds more uncertainty to the premise that the 2027 draft class will deliver a clean solution. Despite walking himself to the edge, Ken still lands on skepticism, arguing the Browns haven't earned the right to be anyone's reclamation project at quarterback. Lima praises Ken for staying open-minded while pushing back on the notion that wanting to get the position right is the same as perpetuating an "anybody but Shedeur" narrative.

The 2027 quarterback class is already generating massive hype, but could it actually become the greatest QB class in NFL Draft history? Brad Powers and Joey Knish break down the top quarterback prospects expected to headline the 2027 NFL Draft, including Arch Manning, CJ Carr, Dante Moore, Julian Sayin, LaNorris Sellers, CJ Bailey, Nico Iamaleava, Fernando Mendoza, Josh Hoover and more. Would Arch Manning really be the No. 1 overall pick if the draft happened today? Is CJ Carr the safest quarterback prospect in college football? Could Dante Moore ultimately become the best NFL quarterback from this class? The guys rank their top quarterback prospects, debate where the consensus is getting certain players wrong, and make bold predictions about how many quarterbacks could be selected in the first round and first three rounds of the NFL Draft. They also discuss elite non-quarterback prospects like Jeremiah Smith, Leonard Moore and Dylan Stewart, and whether the 2027 NFL Draft could become one of the most talented draft classes in recent memory. Will this quarterback group live up to the hype, or are expectations already getting out of control?

Ken and Lima debate whether Brendan Sorsby will actually take the field at Texas Tech this season, with Ken convinced the money is too good for any school to walk away from regardless of the moral outrage. The bigger picture for Browns fans is that if Sorsby plays a full year and proves himself alongside Arch Manning and Dante Moore, he could realistically fall to Cleveland in the 2027 draft. Bottom line: Ken went from closed off on Sorsby entirely to keeping the book wide open after the court ruling bought everyone another year to watch him play.

In this episode, we welcome back our friend Richard Johnson from CBS Sports and Split Zone Duo for a conversation about the college football topics we talk about too much, and the ones we probably do not talk about enough. As preview season creeps closer, we zoom out on the sport’s offseason discourse and ask which arguments are useful, which ones are exhausted, and where the weird, fun, meaningful parts of college football might be hiding. We dig into College Football Playoff format fatigue, the role of TV money and conference power, the constant hope that Congress can somehow “fix” college sports, the growing presence of gambling in broadcasts, and whether the Arch Manning conversation has swung too far in the other direction. Plus, we get into teams and coaches who deserve more attention, including Florida, UCLA, Michigan, and the broader world outside the SEC and Big Ten. We also wander into West Coast scheduling thoughts, the need for more strange bowl game energy, Sacramento sports sadness, college football media golf rankings, and the inevitability of major news breaking whenever Richard goes to Europe. And, right in the middle of our recording, news broke of Brendan Sorsby's reinstatement. (We react as best we can!) Detroit fans wanted answers on Myles Garrett and why the Detroit Lions were not in the middle of it. The conversation laid out a tight timeline, guarded intentions, and a market that only cracked open very late. It was not an open auction. It was a narrow window. Why Detroit Stayed Quiet The show framed the local frustration clearly. People in Detroit felt miffed that the Lions were not involved or did not appear to be. The discussion pushed back. At the combine, the response to any Garrett inquiry was simple. Nothing had changed. The Browns were not moving him. That posture held until very recently. The message to other NFL teams was firm. There was no plan to trade Myles Garrett. Without a signal from Cleveland, there was no reason for Detroit to force a market that did not exist. The Browns' Playbook for Leverage Why the late shift? The Browns wanted options, not a fire sale. Trading a player like Jared Verst was used as the example of rarity. A rookie contract edge rusher with two years of All Pro play and a Defensive Rookie of the Year on the shelf does not get moved. Valuation on that archetype ranged wildly. First and a third. First and a second. Two firsts. Maybe four. That spread underscores how unusual this type of deal would be. The front office approach was explained as aggressive and win focused, not a tear down. They pushed big money back to keep doors open in case a trade surfaced. They also explored whether the NFL would allow five years of future picks instead of three. That ask served two purposes. Maximize what could come back in a Garrett deal. Preserve flexibility to go get a quarterback like Arch Manning as a hypothetical, even if one of the picks landed as far out as 2032. Who Actually Knocked The market finally stirred. The Los Angeles Rams were very aggressive. The Philadelphia Eagles were communicative. The Dallas Cowboys were mentioned. That is where the real dialogue lived late. It tracks with why the Lions did not make noise. The window opened fast and selective. The Browns' valuation was unconventional and steep. Put together, the NFL puzzle looked like this. No movement at the combine. No real plan to trade. Then a late-stage effort to expand trade mechanics and push money around. Only a few teams engaged with the nerve and the capital. Detroit kept its powder dry while the Browns tested the ceiling of leverage. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #mylesgarrett #clevelandbrowns #jimschwartz #drewpetzing #garretttrade #denzelward #petzingscheme Learn more about your ad choices.
