This episode is a continuation from a conversation that took place on the Hall of Justice podcast episode 395. In that episode, Ken Levine detailed his illustrious TV writing career that included writing for MASH, Cheers, Frasier, the Simpsons, and countless others. In that episode, there was no discussion of what this episode is about. While he was writing Cheers and Frasier, Ken Levine was ALSO a Major League Baseball play-by-play announcer. Levine called games for the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and San Diego Padres. In this episode recounts in great detail how this successful television writer began calling games into a tape recorder at Dodgers Stadium. That activity morphed into a couple of minor league gigs, which in turn became opportunities in the big leagues. While the entire story is fascinating, this podcast also contains amazing stories about Ken Griffey Jr., Tony Gwynn, and Cal Ripken, Jr. Still, the best stories involve Tom Hanks and Ted Danson, who played former Red Sox pitcher Sam Malone on Cheers.

Tony Gwynn, a baseball legend and one of the greatest hitters of all time, spent his entire 20-year career with the San Diego Padres. A left-handed batter with an exceptional eye for the ball, Gwynn won a record-tying eight National League batting titles, 15 All-Star selections, seven Silver Slugger Awards, and five Gold Glove Awards. His consistent excellence, highlighted by a 19-year streak of batting over .300, solidified his place in baseball history. However, despite his individual brilliance, Gwynn's career was marked by a notable absence: a World Series championship ring. While he led the Padres to two World Series appearances in 1984 and 1998, they fell short both times. This lack of a championship title remains a curious footnote to an otherwise stellar career, raising the question of what more could have been achieved by one of the game's all-time greats. The 1994 Major League Players Association struck over their refusal to allow a league imposed salary cap. The 232 day strike halted the season with roughly 50 games left on each team's schedule and led to the cancellation of the World Series. Tony Gwynn was batting .394 with a legitimate chance to become the first .400 hitter since Ted Williams. San Francisco's Matt Williams, with 43 home runs, was on pace to at least tie Roger Maris's single season record of 61. And the doomed Montreal Expos, who in 2005 would become the Washington Nationals, had baseball's top record, 74-40 and would lose what would prove to be their only chance at the World Series. Other National League award winners included Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell who was MVP, and Los Angeles Dodger outfielder Raul Mondesi who was named Rookie of the year. The American League award winners were all unanimously selected. They included: Chicago White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas as MVP, Kansas City Royals pitcher David Cone as Cy Young, and Kansas City Royals designated hitter Bob Hamelin was Rookie of the Year.

The best hiitter of the 1980s is, beyond a doubt, either Tony Gwynn or Wade Boggs, two remarkably diifferent people and players who, nonetheless, both slashed singles and doubles all over every park they played in. Boggs, though, added tremendous patience to his game, making it remarkable that he was able collect his 200th hit for the sixth year in a row 36 years ago this week when he was also walking 100 times a year. On the anniversary of this impressive accomplishment, and in the wake of the news that Boggs is battling prostate cancer, Mike and Bill look back at the singular career of one of baseball's best third basemen. Plus, happy birthday to Mickey Tettleton and George Uhle! And farewell to Mike Ferraro, Gary Dotter, Reyes Moronta, and Denny Lemaster.

Melvin of the Baseball Cosmos Facebook page joins Felipe to discuss all the things that went right and wrong en route to his first fantasy baseball championship in the Total Bases Podcast Fantasy Baseball League. The guys also share their frustration on the Chicago Cubs underachieving this year and are resigned to the fact that this will be the new norm for the next 10 years because of Jackson Chourio and the Milwaukee Brewers. They also try to figure out why the modern baseball player seems to be more fragile than their predecessor, which led to talks about the pros and cons of using Tony Gwynn to compare Luis Arraez. Other discussions include the joys of meshing of "real" and fantasy baseball and why it's no longer frowned upon like it used to before as they transition into talking about the retirement of Adrian Wojnarowski as he gets set to be the GM of St. Bonaventure's basketball program, which led the guys to name other examples of baseball writers who gave up their sportswriting gigs for a chance to work in MLB front offices.

All we ask with our All Star games is action and we certainly got that last night. Of course Ohtani went deep but you'd be surprised about who Shohei was actually most impressed with in the game. We luckily got the Judge / Skenes matchup we wanted but it was what Skenes did AFTER he pitched that may have been the most impressive part of his first All Star game. And Case continues to give love to one of his favorite players, Jarren Durran who picked up the hardware for his bomb.  All that and a super cool Casey story about hitting in an All Star group with Tony Gwynn! Follow us and subscribe on Instagram! https://youtu.be/vIuhZD19S1s
