Send a textThe swing that wins on a showcase doesn't always win with two strikes and a runner on second. We sat down with Cloverleaf head coach Aaron DeBord to unpack how to build hitters who make better in-game decisions, how to train under pressure, and how to align high school and travel programs so players stop living between two philosophies and start thriving. We start with trust: Aaron meets seniors first, invites the whole community—not just parents—and then backs it up with consistent actions, from weight room structure to daily positive messages. That culture shift unlocks buy-in and sharper focus when it matters. From there, we dig into what actually translates for hitters: hunting the right pitch by count, using launch angle and exit velocity as tools rather than goals, and adjusting the swing to the moment to move runners and win innings. On the tactical side, Aaron breaks down his aggressive identity—taking the extra 90, first-to-third pressure, and live baserunning reps that force outfielders and catchers to execute. His upgrade to the 21-outs drill, swapping sides within eight seconds after errors, injects game tempo and accountability. We also tackle the hardest dugout call in baseball: when to pull your ace in a must-win. Aaron shares real tournament moments, why he empowers his pitching coach, and how trusting a pitcher's honesty can guide the decision. The takeaway is simple and hard: pitching drives outcomes, defense must make routine plays routine, and you can manufacture enough offense if you compete in the zone.We close by rethinking parent relationships with transparency—open rubrics, open practices, open lines—so families become allies, not obstacles. Along the way, Aaron's Mount Rushmore nods to Ken Griffey, Manny Ramirez, Tony Gwynn, and the chess master Greg Maddux, reminding us that feel, discipline, and anticipation still separate great players. If you're a coach, parent, or player who cares about real development and smarter in-game choices, this one will sharpen your approach from the first pitch to the last decision. If you enjoyed this conversation, follow the show, leave a quick review, and share it with a coach or baseball parent who'll use it on the field tomorrow.Support the show Follow: X | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com

Matt doesn't think Skenes will go close to a 95-pitch limit in a game with the US. Matt thinks a deal happening could be the difference between Konnor Griffin being on the Opening Day roster and not – no deal likely means he will start in Triple A. The guys asked Matt about meeting Tony Gwynn and a loaded Padres team that was fresh off a World Series appearance. Matt said he was in awe of pretty much everything during his first spring. How much longer are we going to wait around for Aaron Rodgers? Do the Steelers have a deadline on it? Poni's moles indicated that the Steelers would know yesterday about Rodgers, but if they do, the secret has survived 24+ hours. With legal tampering starting on Monday, how much longer can the team afford to wait? Last year, the Steelers bowed down and waited around for Rodgers to make his decision, but how much of that had to do with Mike Tomlin? The guys wondered if the Kenneth Gainwell situation is a tell as to where the Steelers are with Rodgers. Is anyone out there pounding the table for Rodgers? It feels like it's more of an acceptance than actually wanting Rodgers back. Daniel Jones just got tagged for $37M by the Colts. Does that make people feel better about Aaron Rodgers? People just love a bargain. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Season 7, Episode 19 (the Tony Gwynn episode) features Dan Fox, Frank Knight, Cole Markle, and sound man Rich Vassallo kicking things off with MLB hot stove drama—because even in football season, the Mets and Phillies can still hijack the conversation. Frank admits he was bummed about the Mets missing on Kyle Tucker, but the mood flips fast when the Mets swoop in overnight and land Bo Bichette, stunning Phillies fans who thought they had him locked up. The crew breaks down why the Phillies' roster fit was questionable (Turner at short, Bohm at third, Stott at second, and Bichette not wanting to play second), why Mets Nation is celebrating anyway, and why the best part of the deal—at least from Frank's perspective—is keeping Bichette out of Philadelphia. The Tucker deal also gets a blunt reality check. Dan questions the value of a $60M-per-year contract for a player who's never finished Top 10 in MVP voting, and the conversation turns into a broader rant about the Dodgers' financial advantage and how the luxury tax has become its own competitive weapon. Cole adds some generational perspective—baseball isn't the cultural default the way it used to be—and the group gets nostalgic about growing up with baseball, kickball, and “how do kids not know the rules anymore?”From there, it's a quick detour into hockey misery (Rangers turmoil and Flyers–Penguins pain), before the show transitions into a full Fox Brothers Alarms segment: the “bomb shelter” basement studio shout-out, the core value statement, services offered, and how to contact the company—plus a plug for the podcast Facebook page and the email inbox. A notable milestone: Rich reports that downloads have jumped from double digits into triple digits, and nobody is quite sure why—but the crew is happy to take the win. Then the episode shifts into the main event: Super Wild Card Weekend recap.Rams vs. Panthers (Rams 34, Panthers 31): a tight game despite the 10.5-point spread, featuring a scorching start from Stafford, a cold stretch that nearly flipped the outcome, and a late reconnection with Puka Nacua to close it out. Dan shares a party story involving a furious Rams fan melting down while his wife tries to keep things kid-friendly.Packers vs. Bears: Green Bay jumps out 21–0, then Chicago claws back and takes control late. The crew debates whether Chicago's QB is magic or chaos—highlighting a “triple coverage” throw that felt more like a prayer than precision, plus the wildly inconsistent accuracy that makes him both dangerous and confusing. The Bears' fan energy (including the cheese-grater celebration) gets a big laugh, and the group admits Chicago's current run is weirdly fun to watch. The show ends mid-transition into Bills vs. Jaguars—setting up the next stretch of Wild Card breakdowns and more playoff chaos to come.Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/

Join the Jeffs on-location as they sit down with Head Brewer Ryan Crisp for an exclusive look inside one of craft beer's most revered institutions. This episode is more than a conversation about beer; it's the story of a journey. We trace Ryan Crisp's incredible path from a 21-year-old homebrewer volunteering his time to becoming the fifth employee and, eventually, the Head Brewer of this world-renowned brewery. Ryan shares the powerful, behind-the-scenes stories of how AleSmith's most iconic beers came to be, including the heartfelt and historic collaboration with San Diego's beloved hall-of-famer, Tony Gwynn. Discover AleSmith's guiding philosophy of balance—an approach so refined they can craft a 10% Triple IPA that remains "deceptively smooth" and harmonious, proving their mastery over classic styles and modern innovation. Listen in for an insider's tour, hear the stories you can't get anywhere else, and taste along as Ryan Crisp guides you through the exclusive beers that define San Diego craft.

Send us a textWe began by talking about the best HOFers that did not make the HOF. Not hitting as many home runs hurt the chances of Derek Jeter, Wade Boggs, and Tony Gwynn all of whom did not win an MVP. Manny Ramirez did hit a lot of HRs never won an MVP, but he's also not a HOFer. Mike Piazza never won an MVP finishing second twice. Dylan Cease got the big bucks for seven years while Sonny Gray got $41M for one year. Pitchers get paid in different ways but long term deals have been  harder to get for pitchers.  Now Framber Valdez is smiling. Nine managers were selected to replace ones not coming back. Warren Schaeffer the latest as he signed on with the #Rockies. Good luck.  We talked about the others who'd already taken the job. And then there's the #Mets. We go unit by unit although we did not talk about catcher Francisco Alvarez.  Is there a way for the team to compete for a pennant in 2026?  They have work to do. Will Francisco Lindor be named team captain? Juan Soto does not seem to want the job. Fortunately there is still time pre-season to continue to change the team after trading Brandon Nimmo for Gold Glove 2B Marcus Semien.  Then there's time until the trading deadline too!Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Is This A Great Game, Or What?

Nobody more perfect for this father-son show than the son of one of the best to ever play the game. Tony Gwynn Jr. was a good Major League player, and now is a really good Major League broadcaster. Right off the bat (ha!) you can tell the similarities, just the way that Jeff is so much like Tim. We revisit Cooperstown 2007, the year Tony Gwynn was inducted into the Hall of Fame. We also talk about the challenges you face as a player turned broadcaster and the difference in playing baseball over the other major sports. As you know, Tony Gwynn was a very good basketball player and his son, well he's a crazy great athlete all around. The apple doesn't fall far, folks. Thanks for listening, share this show with someone who loves baseball and thank you for being a part of our family! Brandon Tierney argues for Ichiro Suzuki's claim as the greatest pure hitter of all time, even surpassing legends like Ted Williams and Tony Gwynn. Tierney emphasizes Ichiro's incredible hit totals, especially considering he started his MLB career at the age of 27. He postulates that if Ichiro had come to the MLB at a younger, more conventional age (22-24), he would have easily shattered Pete Rose's all-time hit record and solidified his status as the undisputed hitting king. Tierney highlights Ichiro's "ballplayer" qualities—his lack of weaknesses, ability to hit for average while still possessing power, speed, and fielding prowess—as further proof of his unparalleled talent.

Former MLB manager and No. 1 overall pick Phil Nevin sits down to reflect on decades of baseball stories, from being mentored by Tony Gwynn to coaching superstars like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. Nevin shares what it was like being drafted first overall, working with legends, and adapting to the game as it's changed through analytics, year-round training, and modern player development.Nevin opens up about his time in the Texas Rangers clubhouse, giving away a full playoff share so a teammate could chase a golf dream, and even paying for a stadium parking attendant's surgery—highlighting the side of baseball most fans never see. He talks about the humility of working with grounds crews, cracking open the coldest beer in the stadium, and the staged phone call that made him the top pick in 1992.The conversation dives deep into the wisdom of Tony Gwynn, who could predict at-bats before they happened, and how Nevin carries those lessons into coaching. He shares his view on leadership, raising sons in baseball, and why good managers treat players with respect but not necessarily the same. From his kicking days in college football to his own gout stories, Nevin keeps it real. You'll also hear behind-the-scenes stories about his coaching days with the Yankees and Angels, including pulling Shohei aside to talk sleep schedules, coaching Judge during his record-breaking run, and how Ohtani's mentality separates him from everyone else. He breaks down the challenges of player development today, coaching third base, dealing with umpires like Angel Hernandez, and knowing when to bite your tongue as a manager.-------------------------HostsEric Hosmer / @hosmer305Mike Moustakas /@moosetacos8Peter Moylan / @petermoylanJustin Su'a / @justinsuaInteract with the Diggin' Deep Crew on:Instagram / Facebook / Twitter / TikTokAdvertising & Partnership inquiries: diggindeep@moonballmedia.coma MoonBall Media Podcast

In this week's edition of Y's Guys, we dive into the latest developments across BYU sports, kicking off with a spotlight on five-star QB recruit Ryder Lyons, who made his official visit to BYU this weekend after a stop at Oregon. The panel discusses the implications of his looming decision, and what it could mean for the quarterback depth chart. Meanwhile, ESPN's Football Power Index puts BYU's College Football Playoff chances at 12.6%, while LJ Martin ranks among the top returning Big 12 running backs, and Jake Retzlaff holds the 7th-best QB grade according to Pro Football Focus.Basketball news dominates the middle segment, as Kevin Young's historic coaching extension locks him in at BYU for 8–10 years, a massive commitment by the program following his debut Sweet 16 season. The newly released Big 12 basketball schedule promises high-energy home matchups with Arizona, Houston, and rival Utah, plus a road-heavy slate including Baylor, Kansas, and West Virginia. With Egor Demin officially receiving a Green Room invite for the NBA Draft, the Cougars continue gaining national traction. This week's featured guests are BYU American Heritage professors Chris Karpowitz and Kelly Patterson, who tackle the Top 5 Myths about American Heritage, one of the university's most dreaded and loved graduation requirements. From fears about failing to myths about political bias and boredom, the professors offer sharp insight and good humor—revealing that they themselves graduated from BYU without taking the class! Their candid discussion also highlights how student-athletes perform in the course, and how teaching the class has evolved.Additional headlines include James Corrigan's national title in the 3000m Steeplechase, BYU's strong showings in Track & Field, softball phenom Rita Tavita's commitment, and shoutouts to Madi Allphin White, named College Sports Communicators' Videographer of the Year. The show wraps with historic notes, sports birthdays, and a memorable quote from Tony Gwynn, capping off another fun, insightful, and Cougar-filled livestream. Hosted on Acast. This episode is a continuation from a conversation that took place on the Hall of Justice podcast episode 395. In that episode, Ken Levine detailed his illustrious TV writing career that included writing for MASH, Cheers, Frasier, the Simpsons, and countless others. In that episode, there was no discussion of what this episode is about. While he was writing Cheers and Frasier, Ken Levine was ALSO a Major League Baseball play-by-play announcer. Levine called games for the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and San Diego Padres. In this episode recounts in great detail how this successful television writer began calling games into a tape recorder at Dodgers Stadium. That activity morphed into a couple of minor league gigs, which in turn became opportunities in the big leagues. While the entire story is fascinating, this podcast also contains amazing stories about Ken Griffey Jr., Tony Gwynn, and Cal Ripken, Jr. Still, the best stories involve Tom Hanks and Ted Danson, who played former Red Sox pitcher Sam Malone on Cheers.
